My guests have departed leaving me a bit shit-faced - okay maybe more than a bit - and my stomach sore from laughter. I think there was a football game going on in the background. Anyone see it?

OK, I just saw somebody post something that wasn’t stupid in the comments on WND. Subject was low oil prices, and a way to subsidize prices to keep US oil extraction going, and it’d work better than President Obama’s proposed 10 dollar tax on oil, up until oil hits $80.

Mac-101 • 4 hours ago

We need a formula for IMPORTED oil something like 100 dollars a barrel minus the cost of the oil divided by half. That way our country’s independent oil companies could stay competitive and not be bought up pennies on the dollar by the international energy companies and NAZI KAPO Scum like Soros.
.
Example:, Oil cost 30 bucks a barrel. 100-30 = 70/2 =35 bucks. Price would be 30+35=65 bucks a barrel and da gubermint gits 35 bucks in import fees and our American energy is protected!

I was at a superb owl party so I’m obviously missing something, but in my drunken state it sounds good.

F*ck You, Phil Anselmo, You Contemptible Bigot

Anselmo was always more than just an authoritative metal voice, he was one of the genre’s most dynamic frontmen. That was true throughout Pantera’s run and his status as an emeritus hero in metal remains to this day. Unfortunately, Anselmo is also a racist and bigot, an ignorant, rampaging asshole bully who’s never really hid his white supremacist tendencies for the past quarter-century. And two weeks ago, he may have given his fans and everybody else the clearest indication yet just what kind of thoughts bounce around inside his head and what feelings are deep in his heart each and every day. During a performance on January 22nd at Dimebash in Hollywood, the annual concert meant to honor late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, Anselmo wrapped up the final all-star jam by stepping forward, giving a Nazi salute and shouting, “white power!” at the audience. He’d reportedly just belted through a powerhouse version of Pantera’s Walk, singing alongside the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on guitar, and then right after he’s “seig heiling” the crowd.

For a couple of days, nobody outside of the show had any idea what had happened — until, of course, somebody uploaded a clip of the incident to YouTube. The response was swift and merciless, as it should have been. At first, Anselmo demurred, claiming that it was all an inside joke since “white wine” was being served back stage. White wine, at a metal show. Sure thing. It was bullshit from the get-go, especially given that watching the video you see the steely eyed fury with which Anselmo screams his racist proclamation. He’s dead fucking serious. Thankfully, nobody bought Anselmo’s explanation and by late last week Robb Flynn, vocalist and guitarist for Machine Head, had decided to speak up. He released his own ten-minute-long YouTube clip in which he talked about what happened, dismissing Anselmo’s claim of white wine being the impetus for his actions. “I was there, and I can tell you for a fact that there was not a Chardonnay or a Pinot Grigio in sight backstage,” Flynn said. “In fact, the only thing that you were drinking, Phil Anselmo, was Beck’s. German beer. Maybe that’s where the joke came from.”

ABC Republican Debate Draws Big Saturday Audience: 13.2 Million Viewers

The return of Donald Trump to the stage helped lift ratings for last night’s Republican presidential primary debate on ABC, which has drawn the largest audience for a political gathering of either party in 2016 — and the network’s largest non-sports audience on a Saturday in more than 14 years.

That’ll feed Trump’s ego.

This is why Bernie’s plea about campaign reform is doomed - the media on which Bernie depends to get his message out is the very same media that rakes in the money from the entire political theatre, which is now an important source of ratings for the broadcasters.

With the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, Trump has spent about $3.6 million on TV and radio ads there. But Trump’s spending trails his next-closest competitor: Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio has spent $4.8 million in New Hampshire, and has benefited from an additional $8.1 million in ads from the Rubio-aligned Conservative Solutions PAC.

$12.9 million for spent for Rubio ads, for New Hampshire.

No, Bernie, America is not going to adopt campaign finance reform.

The very unlikeable Steve King defends his dirty tricks for fellow trickster Cruz:

Steve King On Ben Carson’s Post-Iowa Trip Home: “Clothes Are Cheaper Than Jet Fuel”

Steve King, the Republican congressman from Iowa and a prominent supporter of Ted Cruz’s presidential bid, defended on Friday a tweet he sent on the night of the Iowa caucuses fueling speculation that Ben Carson was suspending his presidential campaign.

“What would be the definition of suspending a campaign?” King told Iowa radio host Steve Deace. “When you no longer campaign. That’s suspending. And if you announce that you’re not going to campaign, that you’re going to suspend your campaign, if you’re not going to go forward to New Hampshire or South Carolina, that you’re going to Florida to pick up some clothing, you would think that, if you want to be the commander-in-chief, you would know that clothes are cheaper than jet fuel.

Seems very old/diffuse in it’s origin. Wiki has:

Laager

A laager, lager, leaguer or laer (Afrikaans, from Dutch leger (camp or army); Dutch pronunciation: [ˈlaːɡər] or [ˈliɡər]). The word is South African in origin, and originally referred to a formation used by travelers whereby they would draw wagons into a circle and place cattle and horses on the inside to protect them from raiders or nocturnal animals. Laager were extensively used by the Voortrekkers of the Great Trek during the 1830s. In 19th century America, the same approach was used by pioneers who would “circle the wagons” in case of attack.[7][8]

VW may offer a generous compensation package to owners of 600,000 diesel models.

According to reports from a German newspaper, the attorney heading VW’s Dieselgate claims, Kenneth Feinberg, said the manufacturer will offer generous compensation packages to its some 600,000 U.S. owners affected by the scandal. The company hasn’t decided on the content of those packages—cash, repairs, buy backs or other things—but Reuters reports that Feinberg told the paper “an overwhelming majority will likely accept the eventual compensation offer.”

But those packages will not go to owners until VW can come to an agreement with U.S. authorities, and the manufacturer has yet to win approval on fixes for individual owners. California regulators denied a recent plan to fix the diesel cars due to its lacking of sufficient detail, and Reuters reports that Feinberg’s timetable for setting up a claims fund may face delays as well.

VW recently submitted a plan to repair the 3.0 liter V-6 models which included a new catalytic converter. What is interesting here is that the V-6 models have the urea injection system and they still needed a new catalytic converter. The 2.0 liter doesn’t have the urea system, it has a NOx trap. I have said all along the reason that VW just didnt change the programming to have it run within emission specs is because everything downstream of the motor wouldn’t survive the mandatory 8 year 80,000 mile warranty.

NBC, ABC, and PIX11 have all picked up/inquired about the photos and minor/moderate flooding around Hoboken Terminal. So far, it hasn’t really affected NJ Transit schedules, though some of the platforms are out of service, and trains are stopping well before the flooding. Figure there’s probably minor delays.

The flooding was the result of the coastal storm/high tide, but it did feel like Venice coming into work this morning. Christie better bring a bigger mop.

I’ve seen conservatives argue countless times that they understand economics better than liberals. Too bad the reality of our economy during Republican and Democratic presidents strongly disagrees with that. Republicans want to push this idea that Obama’s been awful but the fact of the matter is Romney said he’d have the unemployment rate at 7%, well here we are in Obama’s last year in office and unemployment is just below 5%. Maybe just maybe he knows what he’s doing and in a different matter than what that pipsqueak Rubio meant.

Crap like “He’s weakened us”, “No one respects us anymore.”, “He uses too much executive power.” “Him and Michelle have no class.” The fact of the matter is when Obama took over from Bush, the economy was in the shitter and despite a Congress literally filled with Republicans who hate his guts, he’s accomplished a lot. It makes me sad because it makes me wonder what Obama could have accomplished had his opposition not be filled with constantly enraged assholes.

Industry denial of the effects of lead helped prolong its use. Engineers saw lead pipes as being capable of lasting 100 years versus maybe 20 for iron. Did lead poisoning help bring down the Roman Empire?

Those 100-year pipes were awesome.

Too bad most of them have been in use since the 1880’s.

Why is it Democrats understand capitalism better than those that worship it? Oh, wait, that’s a pattern: Worshipping != understanding.

That’s because the revolutionaries masquerading as conservatives don’t actually believe in capitalism.

They believe in wealth which is a completely different thing.

There has been an awful lot of talk from people in the financial industry that we are possibly headed for another recession. Drudge had that overwrought headline about the world economy entering a death spiral, while that was sensationalism, there are a lot of reasons to be concerned. We all know that these things are cyclical and in reality there isn’t a whole lot the president can do to affect it. My worry is if we do go into recession again sometime before the election it will actually be a big boost for whoever the republican nominee is simply because they are not the party currently in the oval office.

I imagine the percentages breaking out like this:

Seems like no one turned up. I don’t get voters and how they turn out so low at these local elections. In many ways, they’re just as if not more important than the presidential ones. It’s too bad, if we had better turnout, I would be kissing my Bashar Al-Assad loving, Ted Cruz supporting, and rape apologizing state senator goodbye and gotten a great state senator in Jill McCabe, who’s an excellent doctor and a solid person too.

What conservatives don’t get is that it’s not criticism in itself of Obama or Clinton that is racist or sexist, it’s the kind of criticism. If you’re suggesting that Obama is only where he is because of white liberal guilt and affirmative action, you’re being a racist. If you attribute traits to Clinton that you’d shrug off or even praise in a male candidate that you disdain in Clinton, yeah you’re being a sexist and you’re definitely being a sexist. Reminds me of that woman on Fox who said that women who join the military should expect to be raped but conservatives including some who have served in the military always insist to me that it’s liberals who disrespect our troops. Funny, I never have seen Obama say that he wouldn’t want Sasha and Malia to be in uniform because of psychopaths raping them but I guess it’s okay to talk shit about the military if you’re a Republican but criticizing wars by Republican presidents is just awful. I fucked up. He’s not talking about our guys attacking them. But it’s a sexist statement and that’s what the criticism directed to Ted’s way should go.

I think it’s poor wording now that I look at it but as I got at above, I really think it’s sexist as shit. And it wouldn’t be forcing these women. They’d be volunteers like the rest of our military. If a draft still existed, then maybe he’d have a point but I think even if we did, it would still be invalid because as I got at already, being a man doesn’t mean you’re by default more prepared for combat than a woman. There’s lots of women that would do better than me and ted (who by the way has never served a day in his life) have.

Media loves to speculate about possible bad news, but I don’t see any reason to expect a recession to hit in the next few months.

Here comes the white stuff. It’s going to be interesting to see if it affects the primary tomorrow. It’ll be rough on those who like to go early, but things should be cleared up by mid-day, I think. No impact on Dix Notch.

Interesting, isn’t Colorado Springs also home to a lot of fundamentalists too? Not fundamentalist LDS but Fundamentalist more in the vein of Falwell.

Colorado City, AZ, used to be known as Short Creek, where Mormon fundamentalists practiced polygamy openly until Federal agents raided it in the 1950’s.

Yep, those are ‘regular’ Christians, who may not see any Mormons, Fundamentalist or not, as fellow Christians. This Colorado City got its name to hide its history.

Colorado City, formerly known as Short Creek (or the Short Creek Community), was founded in 1913[4] by members of the Council of Friends, a breakaway group from the Salt Lake City-based The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The Council of Friends membership desired a remote location where they could practice plural marriage, which had been publicly abandoned by the LDS Church in 1890. On July 26, 1953, Arizona Governor John Howard Pyle sent troops into the settlement to stop polygamy in what became known as the Short Creek raid. The two-year legal battle that followed became a public relations disaster that damaged Pyle’s political career and set a hands-off tone toward the town in Arizona for the next 50 years.[5]

After the death of Joseph W. Musser, the community split into two groups: the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints stayed in Short Creek, while the Apostolic United Brethren relocated to Bluffdale, Utah. The FLDS changed the name of the community to Colorado City (on the Arizona side of the border) and Hildale (on the Utah side) to eliminate any ties to the Short Creek raids.[4]

Charles, I’m having a similar issue here, but on desktop PC with Windows Vista. Recently when I right click on a next-thread link (only for the first time, apparently, altho it’s just happened twice) intending to “open in a new tab” my browser is behaving as if I’d requested some sort of PDF file, altho I did not. (I get a download confirmation popup, indicating the filename.pdf —which I dismiss. Retrying the right-click on the next-thread link works as expected.) Currently using Seamonkey v2.38.

I have my browser(s) configured either to download PDFs, or to open with SumatraPDF. Sorry that I did not note the filenames, except that the most recent was named Original.pdf. Hope that helps.

There is a belief among RWNJs that a rich liberal can’t speak about income inequality unless they give away all their money or else they’re a “hypocrite” or something.

So, if a Christian speaks about helping the poor, and doesn’t give away all their money, are they hypocrites? Asking for a friend.
