On one hand, a contested convention, if staged properly, would give Republicans an unprecedented platform to show off rival candidates, their visions for America’s future, and their appeals to the tens — perhaps hundreds — of millions of viewers tuning in to watch the ultimate results show.

Cynical me, I believe that certain media are hoping this will be the case, so they can attract advertisers for an otherwise obligatory but not profitable television venture.

The only way this becomes a brokered convention is if its a three way race between Trump, Cruz and an establishment candidate each winning enough primaries to prevent the other two from winning a majority. If it comes down to Trump vs. Cruz or one of the three, someone will probably get a majority of the delegates.

Just got back from Micro Center with only a moderate amount of budget damage. Got a new monitor and keyboard (not the $100 kind. After playing around I realized that wasn’t actually what I wanted). Micro Center is great and quite a zoo on Saturdays. The sales guy who helped me was charming. Now all I want to do is take a nap.

Snarky Puppy is a great band but their name makes me feel like all of the good band names are gone (not saying that all the old band had great names - every decade has had bands with sucky names).

Well, as Morning Consult concludes, there won’t be a “brokered” convention because no one is so influential this year to be a broker.

If after the first vote there is no nominee, then many delegates will be free to vote their wish, or for whatever was arranged for them by a candidate that essentially buys their vote.

Seeing another Snarky tune/vid made me go back and listen to one Charles posted back in December - “Lingus” with the wild 4 plus minute synth solo. That one is so damn good I get all emotional listening to it. Between the drummer, bass player and the keyboard soloists I can’t imagine being any more tight. Freaking chills man…up and down my spine.

That one again if anyone didn’t catch it. Snarky Puppy be great.

Brokered in that sense; after the first ballot there would be intense negotiations and lobbying behind closed doors to get a majority of delegates behind one candidate. It would be a lot of fun to watch the GOP eat its own entrails, but its not the most likely outcome.

Unlimited donations to Super Pacs which supposedly are independent of the candidates’ campaigns.

The Soros contribution was to a PAC. I think contributions to a campaign are still limited.

Oh, look, noted racist Charles Murray defends Trump’s racist-politik:

Trump’s America There’s nothing irrational about Donald Trump’s appeal to the white working class, writes Charles Murray: they have every reason to be angry

Murray tries something quite slick here:

[…]

White working-class males were the archetypal “Reagan Democrats” in the early 1980s and are often described as the core of support for Mr. Trump. But the grievances of this group are often misunderstood. It is a mistake to suggest that they are lashing out irrationally against people who don’t look like themselves. There are certainly elements of racism and xenophobia in Trumpism, as I myself have discovered on Twitter and Facebook after writing critically about Mr. Trump.

But the central truth of Trumpism as a phenomenon is that the entire American working class has legitimate reasons to be angry at the ruling class. During the past half-century of economic growth, virtually none of the rewards have gone to the working class. The economists can supply caveats and refinements to that statement, but the bottom line is stark: The real family income of people in the bottom half of the income distribution hasn’t increased since the late 1960s.

[…]

First, Murray is trying to say that it’s the Trump supporters who are the racists, in opposition to himself (Murray). (Murray is not a bit Trump supporter, which I gather comes mostly from personality clash.)

But then in the next paragraph Murray basically does a Bernie Sanders. Murray’s assertions there are no different than Sanders, regarding the inequality of economics in contemporary America.

Anyway, in the article as a whole, despite Murray’s attempt at moving the tar-baby of racism onto Trump’s online supporters, Murray seems quite concerned about “white” this and that, and about some mythical (to me) traditional American “creed”.

Murray is doing a kind of triangulating, putting himself at a midway point between those racist Trump supporters on twitter, and the “elite”.

It’s all very deceptive. Clearly this article is just another dog whistle.

And the target readers of the WSJ heard that whistle:

JIM SHULER 2 minutes ago
For many this country has to be changed. For blacks like Obama he is resentful that some smart white men were able to form and build this wonderful nation.
For liberal women, the fact that a bunch of smart white men designed and founded this country.

That are the reasons liberals hate this country. It is because they are selfish petty people that can’t stand to give the white men the credit they deserve.

Yep I get it now. Thanks to you and BBD for clearing that up for me. I thought that was it but I wasn’t sure hence the question.

It’s an easy mistake. It is entirely possible that the only five people in the US that believe Super PACs don’t coordinate with their corresponding campaigns are the Citizen’s United SCOTUS majority.

And even that majority adopts this frankly incredible belief only as a prop for their tortured reasoning.

Yes, that is exactly it. Murray doesn’t disagree with the racist approach, but he wants more syllables in his words, and Trump’s supporters don’t do multisyllabic words so well.

This idea that one can cover up racist-essentialism with a big enough lexicon is what separates Murray from Trump supporters, who don’t know what a “lexicon” is in the first place.

A trip to an old plantation in South Carolina when I was on vacation a few years ago was very enlightening. It had been a rice plantation; rice was a very lucrative crop because European countries would buy lots of it to feed their armies. The slaves had been West African rice farmers. They were kidnapped and brought to South Carolina not to merely provide brute labor, but because they had the skills and knowledge to cultivate rice. The white planters were nothing but parasites; the slaves supplied all of the know-how and labor to make the plantation profitable, but not for themselves.

Just found this NY Times article providing a little more context:

F.E.C. Tells Sanders That Some Donors May Have Given Too Much

The vast majority of the donors gave several small contributions to Mr. Sanders for the Democratic primary that eventually totaled more than the $2,700 limit, according to a letter the election commission sent to Mr. Sanders on Thursday.

Such glitches are common in political campaigns, which are required to track small donors and begin itemizing their contributions when their total reaches $200. That can be harder when donors use slightly different variations of their names or contribute from more than one address. Mr. Sanders’s campaign may choose to refund the excess contributions or re-designate the excess for use in a general election campaign, when candidates can accept another $2,700.

But the F.E.C.’s review suggests that the sheer volume of small contributions Mr. Sanders is receiving — more than 3 million of them so far, according to his campaign — may be straining his campaign’s ability to keep track of which donors are which. Most of the contributions cited by the commission were given by donors with relatively unusual names, whose small checks are generally easier to tally.

In early February, after the end of the fourth fund-raising quarter, Mr. Sanders’s campaign announced that it had more than 1.3 million donors, an astonishing number for so early in the campaign cycle. And last week, the campaign announced it had received 3.25 million total donations, the most of any presidential candidate in the race. The campaign’s most recent F.E.C. filing was nearly 100,000 pages long.

At first blush this looked suspicious to me, but after reading this, I’ll give Bernie the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Read one way, that sounds like there may be a few donors attempting to bend the rules by doing lots of small donations, thinking they won’t be lumped together. The technology that makes it easy for them to make many small donations makes it easy to add them.

Reading through the actual FEC report, I totally agree. Many of the overages were less that $100 after multiple donations, and some, I think, combined primary and general donations (Bill Maher, for instance, is listed as a $5,400 donation—which would be a perfect example of that.)

One striking thing about this is that Charles Murray deviates from conservative orthodoxy very significantly here.

1) He uses class-based language.

2) He admits the existence of the ruling class.

3) He admits the fact of rising economic inequality, and

4) He views this inequality as a problem.

re: #71 Charles Johnson

Wow, things are gonna get very interesting if it’s true.

Perhaps not. The simplest thing for the Congressional GOP to do is to refuse to consider any SCOTUS nomination made by Obama at all, and rely on the usual GOP water-carriers in the media to provide cover for this obstructionism.

A comment at MySA:

Oh no. The USA has lost a strong voice for conservative values. It also has made this election more crucial. A socialist, whether national or international in flavor, CANNOT be allowed to put another socialist on the Supreme Court. Our gun rights and ALL other rights are in jeopardy if some socialist is allowed to define them.

As I said upthread, the shit is going to hit the fan.

The GOP has both houses of Congress and expects to win the presidency in November.

I think they will do nothing and tell their own loudmouths (in Congress) to say nothing.

Of coarse now we are going to hear conspiracies like this is some kind of a Obama plot so he can try and pick another SCOTUS judge.

It just completely changes the calculus even if Obama appoints someone like Kennedy.

More about Scalia death coming up on Google now. KVIA TV is in a world of shit if this is a hoax.

Thoughts and prayers to the Scalia family, as reports of his death at his West Texas ranch.

Say what you want about his jurisprudence, but he was one of the major figures on the court since he was appointed. His battles with the liberal wing of the court, as well as with O’Connor and Kennedy are going to be revisited in coming days and weeks.

As will how this will affect the balance of the Court in coming years since it unexpectedly gives the President another chance to influence the Court’s direction for years to come.

In fact, this could actually spur RBG to retire, as the balance of the court would swing more liberal with Scalia passing on Obama’s watch. The President could actually end up with a stronger liberal wing than it has seen in decades. This is not an insignificant factor, and would also underline the importance of having a Democrat in the White House - nominating SCt justices is one of the most important tasks they ever get to undertake - and the choices will often influence policy for decades or longer.

Obviously assassinated by the secret Mind Control/Chemtrail facility that generates the Marfa lights.

Check again

Finally seeing some reports…but Google seems to be treating it very oddly. Shrug.

Taking the politics out of it, thoughts to his family and friends.

Putting the politics back in…how much will it become the biggest reason to vote for a Republican and be used as a tropic tonight?

re: #47 No Depression

Just found this NY Times article providing a little more context:

F.E.C. Tells Sanders That Some Donors May Have Given Too Much

At first blush this looked suspicious to me, but after reading this, I’ll give Bernie the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Seems simple enough when Hillary does it on her site.
1. Give up to x dollars it all goes to me.

2. Give up to y dollars and x goes to me and remainder to DNC.

3. Give z dollars and after I and DNC each take the maximum allowed the remainder will be split between the 47 state Democratic parties taking contributions from this fund.

Right on…ideological and policy differences aside, my condolences to Scalia’s family and to his colleagues.

Talking about a replacement comes later.
