Repost from downstairs:

Excuse me, I just ran out of fucks to give. Chaldeans unanimously voted for Trump on a promise of being pro-life and pro-Christian, and assuming their Christian beliefs would shield them from any deportation orders…not to mention settling scores with their Muslim enemies, and now look how it has blown up on their faces:

So why in the world would they think combover would do anything for them? Did they pay any attention to his hateful campaign?

I don’t get how anyone who paid attention to what that asshole said could ever believe he was going to protect anyone’s interests but his own.

Because ME Christians have grown up to assume since they are Christian, they are part of the white majority.

And add to their hatred of Muslims and they are under the assumption that they have fully assimilated into American life.

What pisses me off is that lots of them joined white Trump supporters in taunting Hispanics with the “build the wall” rhetoric.

Mrs. FBW turned to me this morning as we were scrolling through the news on our respective devices, and said, “I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed that other countries are seeing this guy, and thinking ‘Americans chose HIM as their President.’ What must they think of US, that we would do that?”

I was just struck by how similar this is to how Jews felt in Germany before Hitler - they’d assimilated into the society, they fought in Germany’s wars, they felt like GERMANS who happened to be Jewish. Their friends and neighbors would certainly not do anything bad to them.

You should see the e-mails I get from my chess friends in Europe. They’re telling me that there is a major push to now isolate the US. There’s even discussions about them leaving NATO and forming their own mutual alliance and defense organization!

Except one major difference: Jews in Germany didn’t attack other minority groups to seek acceptance from the dominant society like ME Christians have been doing.

A comment from WaPo’s story:

3. People voting against their own self-interest. This Iraqi Christian community in Michigan was apparently so mesmerized by Trump’s attacks on Muslims that they didn’t recognize that the xenophobia he was stirring up was a tidal wave that wasn’t going to stop at deporting Muslims. A similar example are the voters in Kentucky with life-threatening illnesses who voted for Trump and the Republican governor who campaigned to abolish Obamacare that was keeping them alive.

That is the absolute truth. Trump’s win is the culmination of Nixon’s Southern Strategy. He has now totally mutated the Republican Party into the RepubliKKKlan Party and the sole glue that holds that Party together is White Supremacy.

No, though of course Germany had just been through a war, and the German Jews no doubt hated the other side every bit as much as all the other Germans. External enemy vs internal, but still - shared enmity made them think they were part of the group.

NYMag: Maybe America Wasn’t Crazy to Elect Donald Trump

A confession: I’m much less afraid of Trump than I was a year ago. His rhetoric, his unfettered far-right agenda, his love of violence, and his loathing of constitutional limits during the campaign were indeed things to be terrified by. They still are. But those of us who were worried that the Constitution might not hold, and that liberal democracy was teetering on the edge of implosion, have so far, mercifully, been proven wrong.

The Founders turn out to have constructed a system designed to confront exactly this kind of despotic figure — and it has held up well, even with total GOP control of House and Senate, even in this dangerously liquid, hyperdemocratic modern world. The press has done its job of fact-checking, exposing, and opposing those in power (yes, Mr. Bannon, that is one part of its function in a democracy). The courts have resisted strongly. The opposition has seen a dramatic uptick in political and civic engagement. Even Trump’s own congressional party has splintered, impervious to the charisma of their hood ornament. The American public has not been swept up in a nationalist fervor and has tilted against much of Trump’s agenda — on health care and immigration in particular.

As the great philosopher Yogi Berra said, “It isn’t over ‘till its over”. And we’re still far from over.

Fuck that Tory wanker.

NYMag: Maybe America Wasn’t Crazy to Elect Donald Trump

As the great philosopher Yogi Berra said, “It isn’t over ‘till its over”. And we’re still far from over.

Fuck that Tory wanker.

OFFS, the man remains in office because his party is so cravenly partisan that they will refuse to do anything about his blatantly unconstitutional actions until they judge that he is doing actual damage to the party. They’re holding out til 2020 (if not longer) for one reason: They need a Republican in the White House to get their bills passed. The fact that they haven’t yet passed a damned thing of note only means they have yet to find the right formula. As soon as that happens, the deconstruction of the Republic will begin.

There’s also a low underpass in San Mateo, on Tilton Ave, where the old Southern Pacific (now Caltrain) tracks run. All the local truck rental places specify that you MAY NOT take your truck on Tilton.

Yeah, but I bet there are still some who do it anyway.

Until a couple of years ago there was a low trestle in Sealy, Texas like that one. I appreciated the very clear warning: a line of signs set at the same height over the roadway about 50 feet ahead of the trestle that read IF YOU HIT THIS, YOU’LL HIT THE BRIDGE.

I think I may post a live video feed of Trump’s “100 Days” rally in Harrisburg, even though I absolutely fucking hate hearing that rotten son of a bitch’s voice, because this is going to be a serious festival of denial, Orwellian double-speak, and all-around incoherent bad craziness.

Video

The guy walking down the sidewalk at 1:20 doesn’t seem to notice the crash happening a few feet away. Maybe he goes that way every day and he’s used to it.

I could’ve told you that wasn’t a US fleet carrier, and I’m not anything resembling an expert.

Hey, at least it isn’t a clearly computer generated image using a scale model of a Soviet destroyer.

Heh, yes, but that’s something we would expect of a tabloid.

We were always at war with Eastasia.

We were always campaigning against Clinton.

Time for a look at the real Carl Vinson. Probably not in the Sea of Japan.

I think, even here, we have no idea how unprecedented this type of behavior by a sitting president is.

For some reason I wandered over to The Resurgent to see what they were nattering on about at the moment and read some random person’s opinion as to why we’re stuck with Obamacare. For me, the money quote was:

…from The Hill “Many vulnerable Republicans are running scared. One moderate Republican was overheard in a House cafeteria this week telling an aide: ‘If I vote for this healthcare bill, it will be the end of my career.’”

Therein lies the problem. And though it’s easy - and correct - to lay blame on career politicians putting self-interest above what’s right, we must remember that if they didn’t have to answer to a self-interested populace, those representatives might be less concerned about having to buy votes every other year.

Ummm, why shouldn’t the populace be self-interested? And why shouldn’t elected representatives be responsive to those interests? Sadly, The Resurgent doesn’t have comments, but presumably Erick son of Erick approves of all content, so I guess this is Christianity at its best.

Carl is currently located at Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia. He will probably be there quite a while.

It’s not the signs. It’s the functional illiteracy and innumeracy of the drivers.
