The New Yorker: What Happens When a Bad-Tempered, Distractible Doofus Runs an Empire?
One of the few things that Kaiser Wilhelm II, who ruled Germany from 1888 to 1918, had a talent for was causing outrage. A particular specialty was insulting other monarchs. He called the diminutive King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy “the dwarf” in front of the king’s own entourage. He called Prince (later Tsar) Ferdinand, of Bulgaria, “Fernando naso,” on account of his beaky nose, and spread rumors that he was a hermaphrodite. Since Wilhelm was notably indiscreet, people always knew what he was saying behind their backs. Ferdinand had his revenge. After a visit to Germany, in 1909, during which the Kaiser slapped him on the bottom in public and then refused to apologize, Ferdinand awarded a valuable arms contract that had been promised to the Germans to a French company instead.
Remember Tiana Smalls’ post about stepping up and saying something that I shared yesterday?
Here’s a thread about another incident:
Was on a train from Cambridge earlier. Two young girls with beautiful face paint walked into my carriage and sat down about half an hour into the journey. A couple of mins later this man walked in and sat next to them even though the carriage was empty with plenty of empty seats

Well, old Kaiser Bill’s foibles were legendary in his lifetime (and history has pretty much confirmed and/or expanded their veracity) but the big difference between then and now was that Wilhelm had a government (and military) that tended to rein in and/or deflect his worst impulses. Also, the reason why he was so obnoxious to his fellow royalty was that hanging out with royalty was pretty much all they let him do. Actual diplomacy was generally left to diplomats who knew what they were doing - the Kaiser got to host the big celebratory dinners afterwards and take credit for things.
Sadly, (for us, anyway) “progress” has placed a Doofus in charge with more executive power that even the Kaiser (if no more brains with which to use it)

Not that odd that the yam’s tv station would give his hand-picked “incumbent” time to spew his crap (remember, that’s the only reason Nikki’s in New York—so Henry McMaster could run as an incumbent.)
Fingers crossed that James Smith wins the Dem primary without needing a runoff, so he can concentrate on going straight at Henry—James and his Lt. Gov. running mate, Mandy Powers Norrell, actually might have a shot—they are GREAT.
Here’s a moment from a debate last week where Mandy was sitting in for James—she had to physically move her chair to stay out of the crossfire between the other two loon Dem candidates.
When I wasn’t sure this SC Democratic governor’s race debate video could get any stranger/funnier, @MPowersNorrell just scooted her chair back to get as far as possible away from the Noble-Willis fray 😂 pic.twitter.com/NoHdj7jZNt

On another note: I belong to an FB group of Canadians now living in the U.S. It’s usually pretty easy going there but in the past several days the moderators have had to tell everybody to cool it because political discussions were breaking out on every post.

Singapore also has legally enforced grooming standards. Former strongman Lee Kuan Yew once banned an American singer from the country for being “a long-haired hippie.” The singer was Wayne Newton.
I have a monumental headache after debunking a YouTube video my wife’s first ex-hub promoted to me as “proof” Venezuela’s economic and political situation is being maligned for some secretive nefarious purpose.
Gaa.
The problem with claims of conspiracy theorists (“jet fuel can’t melt steel”) is that they are easy to promote (that fits on a bumper sticker) but are very tedious to refute.
As a matter of fact, I debunked that one a few years ago, using data from steel producers, petroleum companies, the design of the World Trade Center’s structure, &c to the same guy. It took three pages of writing to thoroughly debunk that one-sentence claim. (He still believes 9/11 is some sort of nefarious plot by who knows, the government, the owner of the building, the CIA, something. All that information I provided on exactly why weakened steel from heat would guarantee the buildings’ collapses was just “more proof of the conspiracy.”)
The video on Venezuela he asked me to watch is half-an-hour long. I quit after about six minutes and wrote a three-page debunk to just those five minutes.
I am sure I will not change his mind.

Singapore also has legally enforced grooming standards. Former strongman Lee Kuan Yew once banned an American singer from the country for being “a long-haired hippie.” The singer was Wayne Newton.
Also, IIRC, Cliff Richard.
Contrariwise, in 1971 I flew into Singapore from Australia with my ponytail tucked down my shirt, and the front hair pulled forward and sort-of Brylcreemed; button-down, long sleeve shirt. Very young, educated, clean and confident. Waltzed right through.
Got the hell out ASAP, though; and to add to the fun, I was born there and rather interested in imagining my childhood in the 1950s. My dad, who helped usher in independence (unlike most colonial Brits, he believed in it) didn’t go back till 1990, and hated what they’d done with the place. So it goes. This is going to be a nostalgic few days for me.
