Here’s something I’ve noticed lately that has disturbed me. The GOP attacks on voter registration and voting rights are causing a fundamental shift in the way American politics work.

Remember a while back when we were talking about the GOP politician (I forget his name) who publicly stated that he only represents Republicans in his constituency and gives no shits about anyone else?

At first I thought it was ludicrous for him to say that but then I realized that Conservatives are tweaking the political machinations of this country in such a way that a Senator or Congressperson really does only need to support Republicans to stay in office because a lot of people on the other side won’t be able to vote.

Look at what we’ve seen since Barack Obama became President. Republicans have tripled their efforts to disenfranchise minority voters with ever more egregious and immoral tactics (look at what Brian Kemp is doing in GA right now). Gerrymandering, fewer open hours and polling places in Democratic strongholds. Incorrect dates, times and polling places on voter cards in democratic areas. Added restrictions (Voter ID) and ever more confusing requirements to get said ID or complete voter registration.

They’ve gotten away with it for years by putting barriers up a little bit at a time but the cumulative effect is growing and now under Trump they are emboldened to push the envelope as far as it will possibly go.

Russian interference notwithstanding the GOP continues stacking the deck more and more in their favor. Now they’ve got Kavanagh on the Supreme Court to uphold most of their voter suppression and voter ID laws.

Republicans are dangerously close to putting the finishing touches on a large scale voter disenfranchisement scheme designed to keep them in power in perpetuity.

Imagine how hard it would be to win a poker game where you’re playing with a regular deck and the other guy is using a deck made up entirely of Kings and Aces. That’s what those who believe in Democracy and the Democratic Process are up against right now.

Regardless of what happens in a months time, we’ve got to be thinking about 2020, 2022 and beyond. The Republicans will not stop going down this road. The only option is to fight back.

It seems to me that Flake does not realize how badly he burned bridges with his pointless melodrama during the Kavanaugh fiasco.

He may be able to continue to play in the rwnj world of his roots. But not in the nation as a whole. Half the country has already written him off.

Looking bad at Tyndale AFB. Hearing a lot of reports we lost ten percent of our total F22 Raptor fleet on the ground since the base took a direct hit from the storm and there was no way to get grounded birds ready to fly out in time.

I have said for years that stopping production of the F22 was one of the worst mistakes Obama ever made. We have no means of replacing those airframes. None.

I am still completely amazed that the non-flyable aircraft were not evacuated from Tyndale. Mr Rogoway’s exasperation aside, to leave billions of dollars of scarce resources vulnerable to entirely predictable events is not good leadership or management.

I seem to remember stories about how another base commander that neglected evacuate his aircraft before a hurricane was fired and separated.

A white man who shot at a black teenager who came to his house to ask for directions was found guilty Friday of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

The trial for Jeffrey Zeigler, the 52-year-old Rochester Hills man and retired Detroit firefighter, began Oct. 8. The jury heard from multiple witnesses, including the teenager himself, and came to the guilty verdict Friday. The prosecution was hoping to convict Zeigler of assault with intent to murder, which could have meant life in prison.

Jeffrey is due in court again on Nov. 13 for sentencing.

3 days notice is not enough time to get a dozen and a half downed aircraft up and flying. There is no way to do that. One or two..maybe.

Also, the weather models were WAAAY off on the storm strength until 18 hours before landfall. Nobody knew we were looking at a monster until it was almost kissing the coast.

I want to know why the backbone of our air supremacy fleet only has a 48% mission readiness rate (which is why so many of them were grounded), why we are basing them in hurricane ally, and why the fuck the hurricane proof hangers utterly failed to be hurricane proof.

Just finished watching the video with dancer Jared Grimes. My big thought was that dancing on asphalt is really hard. Particularly on the knees and ankles. Things like spins and drags don’t go very well.

It was interesting to see how he met those constraints by changing technique and choosing his choreography to be more staccato.

I need to look up his choreography on wood surfaces. I suspect it will be much more flowing.

I agree with you that the constraints were 72 hours notice or less.

And I agree with you that the force of the hurricane did increase unexpectedly.

I also readily admit that I do not know the technical answer on how to protect or evacuate the non-flyable aircraft.

And yes, I agree with you, that if there is no other alternative to evacuating or keeping them undamaged when a hurricane hits Tyndale, basing them elsewhere is a reasonable solution.

Whatever the solution, I suspect that there are people in the Dept of the Air Force who had better know. Or figure it out. If not, perhaps they are not the correct people to entrust billions of dollars of scarce defense equipment.

Certainly, in normal times, this would be looked at Congress.

Regarding the readiness rate of the F-22, I agree with you that it seems extremely low considering how few F-22 airframes we have. Particularly after after Hurricane Michael.

He doesn’t have an opinion because he can’t conceptualize of it as a problem that will affect him. If you look at the kind of policy he’s pushed through, the one way that he can relate to the idea of collapse and planetary crisis is to simply declare it inevitable and move on to creating policy with the greatest short-term benefit for him and his kind.

Make no mistake, a lot of these people want mass death and disruption, because they image that at the end they’ll rule the world. For some, that’s a spiritual stance emanating from apocalypticism in which they’re the chosen few that will be Raptured or otherwise spared, for others it’s a sort of John-Galt-meets-Mad-Max thing where the reactionary Elect will be comparatively better situated, and thus pharaonically powerful compared to the starving, homeless refugees.
