Yeah, but I referenced “reality star” to underline a certain kind of vacuity and attention seeking. Whereas “porn star” I don’t attribute any specific character traits to.

Also, there are things I try and forget, and more than one of them involve Tila Nyugen. Because there was a point was she was obviously brain damaged but also still doing shameless publicity stunts, and that is a volatile mix of uncomfortable and distasteful.

OT, but maybe of interest here. Leah Remini apparently will examine the cultish aspects of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the next season of her A&E show. A two-hour special is slotted for Nov. 13.

Coincidentally, a former student of mine told me she’s run into some JWs in Guangzhou who encouraged her to use a JW app to read the(ir) Bible. I had to warn her that the Chinese government does not approve of the Witnesses, and she would need to be careful about using the app — the government watches everything onliine — and meeting people in their home for “church” purposes. She confirmed today that she was unable to talk about the Bible in Chinese on WeChat with anyone, because the messages immediately get blocked or deleted.

I find it hard to decide who to root for in this skirmish between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Beijing government, but I hope Leah rakes them over the coals, like she has done the CoS.

There have been scientific studies attesting to these traits, I believe. There’s something in the conservative mind that makes them especially tribal and consequently mistrustful of “others.” In the Stone Age days, they would have been the tribal elders telling everyone these newcomers with their metal tools were evil, so kill them. And don’t forget the canoli — I mean, take their tools, too.

I Bought Used Voting Machines on eBay for $100 Apiece. What I Found Was Alarming (Wired, more at the link, the writer used to work for NSA as an analyst):

In 2016, I bought two voting machines online for less than $100 apiece. I didn’t even have to search the dark web. I found them on eBay.

Surely, I thought, these machines would have strict guidelines for lifecycle control like other sensitive equipment, like medical devices. I was wrong. I was able to purchase a pair of direct-recording electronic voting machines and have them delivered to my home in just a few days. I did this again just a few months ago. Alarmingly, they are still available to buy online.

If getting voting machines delivered to my door was shockingly easy, getting inside them proved to be simpler still. The tamper-proof screws didn’t work, all the computing equipment was still intact, and the hard drives had not been wiped. The information I found on the drives, including candidates, precincts, and the number of votes cast on the machine, were not encrypted. Worse, the “Property Of” government labels were still attached, meaning someone had sold government property filled with voter information and location data online, at a low cost, with no consequences. It would be the equivalent of buying a surplus police car with the logos still on it.

I think the JWs are going to be fairly easy pickings because there have been a number of cases in the US where the JWs have had to pay out over failure to report child sexual abuse. This is likely to be reduced upon appeal, but a jury in Montana found the organization liable for $4 million in compensation and $31 million in punitive damages at the end of last month for one woman who was sexually assaulted by a man in a JW congregation. (This doesn’t include the sheer condemnation the Australian JWs got from the Royal Commission which also went after the Catholic church and Hillsong.)

The A&E special with Leah Remini is on November 13 and its commercial is out there—my brother asked me on Saturday if I’d seen it. “Why no, up until 36 hours ago I was in Japan.” I did look up the commercial and recognized Lloyd Evans (aka John Cedars) who is a very articulate ex-JW. It should be interesting. There’s certainly a lot of dirt that deservedly needs to come out about the JWs. They even shun ex members like Scientology does.

I’m thinking the JWs are just going to be hating life after this. But their belief that sex abuse can only be acted upon when there are two witnesses is going to come across as a way of avoiding dealing with congregational sex abusers.

I agree with both of them at some level. Actual violence on the left - breaking windows, for instance - doesn’t help our message. And we really do need to stop going after each other. But, it’s been obvious for a while now that the GOP won’t. And the won’t just because the left decides to back down. All we can do is stand up and make them stop, make them lose at the ballot box, investigate Trump, and implicate the whole gang that is doing this.

I still remember the time 10 years ago or so when I was driving home from work at 10PM in the dark and some cyclist, who did not have lights on his bike, decided to pull the same stunt at my intersection, where both roads had 4 lanes plus 2 turn lanes. Let’s face it folks, it’s over. Everything we know and love ended 2 years ago. We will not retake the House. We will lose at least 4 seats in the Senate. Even if we “win,” it will be contested as a rigged victory and the Right will not accept it. Never been so demoralized for a country. Then again, maybe I’m depressed because my mom’s cancer has spread. Maybe 6 months left. Sigh. At least she gets to cast one last vote.

They knew just enough about computers to vastly overestimate their own understanding and so the claim seemed plausible, because they thought the “experts” had made it.

Really, really sorry about your mom. Both of my parents, and both my wife’s parents are dead. We’re orphans in our very early sixties. It’s not uncommon. It’s just a roll of the dice.

But the future, politically, is an open book. It all depends on turnout. If we get more people to the polls, we can change the shape of the House and the Senate. Granted, it’s a longshot, but it’s a real possibility. Do whatever you can to make that happen. Phone bank. Block walk. Do what you need to do, but by all means, be a better citizen. It’s the only way to get a better country.

I am afraid because of what has been reported where straight Democratic votes in Texas magically select Cruz for Senator. Hopefully that did not affect these voters but it makes one concerned about the reliability of the voting mechanism.
