Mulholland Is Burning: How the Iconic Rock Store Survived the Woolsey Fire
Get to the Rock Store, now!”
It was 2 a.m. on November 9th when Rich Savko’s cell phone rang. Groggily, he recognized the number of the local sheriff. Phone calls from law enforcement in the middle of the night are always bad news. When he answered, he heard the panic in the sheriff’s voice when he spoke those six words. So Savko jumped in his car and sped toward the mountains, toward the business his parents opened in 1961, toward the Rock Store, the little diner on Mulholland Highway that’s become a cultural gathering point for motorcyclists across California.
Twelve hours had passed since southern California’s ferocious Santa Ana winds whipped a small brush fire in nearby Simi Valley into an unstoppable inferno. The Woolsey Fire marched south to the sea with Shermanesque fury, roaring through dry washes and parched grass hills. The land was parched and ready to burn—there was nothing to be done. A number of homes had already been lost, and with air tankers grounded by 60 mph wind gusts, firefighters had no real way to halt its advance. The Rock Store lay directly in its path.

So if anybody cares or remembers or cares about my earlier post about me getting censored by FB, I reposted the same article in another post, but substituted Mueller for special counsel and trump for occupant of the white house. Then i posted this.
“I’m being targeted from Facebook for some reason as my post about this story about the special prosecutor turning a profit unlike the occupant of the wh who had many many bankruptcies. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since FB has had lots of problems not doing much to stop interference by the Russians in the 2916 elections as well as the many other investigations into their lack of action into this and many other security issues”
This is still up on FB.
All I can gather from all this is if you combine trump and mueller in specific terms or in a certain context, they will tag you.
I only have 100 or less friends and was aggressively moderated, I can only assume that FB has an obvious bias toward trump and right wing causes when they are totally lax in cracking down on obvious misinformation from russians and other dangerous players against the US.
So I can only come to the conclusion that facebook doesn’t care about the well being of the United States and only cares about shareholders and the corporation.
This country will die from this instead of an actual conventional war.

Countries usually prepare to fight the last war. We are spending a fortune on a military that is not competing successful in the new battlefield that Putin’s team seems to have mastered. We are bankrupting this nation with weaponry that are of little practical use in the bloodless wars of the future, or in stopping the intense violent conflicts being waged in Africa and the Middle East.

I was doing some cleaning around the house tonight and while my hands were busy, as usual my mind was wandering. I was thinking about the reports out today about the depth and various attack vectors of the Russian operations when it occurred to me that the Russian operations are the Obama operations of 2008 & 2012, weaponized. Where Obama and the Democrats targeted voters to get people engaged and to the polls, the Russian operations boosted Hair Furor and Republicans, sowed uncertainty and discord on the left and specifically targeted blacks to suppress their turnout.
I wonder if Pootie (or his people) saw the Obama operations and decided that the use of demographic and user data could be used to achieve their own ends.

Because of the length of the film, there is an edited version which removes that (and a bunch of other things).
NBC once aired the edited version, as did FOX.
SUNDAY, DEC. 16
THE SOUND OF MUSIC - The ABC Television Network will air the Rodgers & Hammerstein cinematic treasure “The Sound of Music.” Celebrate the Oscar-winning classic with popular favorites “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “The Lonely Goatherd” and “The Sound of Music.” (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
Based on the length of the film, to include commercials, something would have to be cut from the runtime. As to whether that is the ripping the Nazi flag scene, that part is unknown.

re: #76 MsJ
This is something. What does trump have on these people?
The amount of Russian money that was funnelled through the NRA to a significant number of members of Congress combined with an increasingly insane* voter base who see any deviation from the Trump orthodoxy as a betrayal.
TBH, having the GOP election machine taken over by Trump loyalists is probably good news for the country and the Democratic party. One of the reasons why the Republicans did badly across the country was that the message they were giving to the public didn’t bear much resemblance to reality, and so a lot of people who normally vote Republican didn’t, either voting Democrat or just sitting the election out.
Having the same strategy in place for 2020 doesn’t sound like a winning move. Add in the rather high chance that Trump will have either resigned, be impeached, or struggling to keep close family members out of prison, and that Republicans won’t be able to position themselves away from him, has a rather likely downside for the Republicans, with not much upside. I really doubt that the savings of not having people duplicating roles will save much money, but will make it much harder for Republicans to customise their campaigns for local needs.

They’re taking all the wrong lessons from this - that if they are more extreme they’ll do better next time. They think that the ones who lost were the ones who got squishy on the issues Trump favors.
Same as the past few elections frankly. The GOP has become more extreme, and think that their success comes from being even more extreme.
re: #93 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam
The experts at Bloomberg are baffled by Trump’s Fed tweet, especially his “stop the 50B” remark.
Did they watch the daily dumber than stumps Fox & Friends? That usually explains trump tweets.
re: #90 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam
Not yet 9 am and the president has:
-tweet-raged about Strzok and Page
-wished Flynn good luck at sentencing
-directed Fed to “feel the market”
-attacked Facebook, Twitter & Google for bias
-complained about immigration
-called for end of Russia probe citing a reporter’s comment— Philip Rucker
Shame Rucker didn’t include DJT’s tweet threatening Russia for manipulating social media during 2016 election.
Oh, wait, Donny didn’t tweet such a threat, did he?

Hmmm……looks like former Fed Chairman Greenspan is predicting stagflation on the horizon. Blecch. I still remember the stagflation of the 70’s.
The former chairman also warned that the United States may be poised for a period of stagflation, “a toxic mix” when the economy suffers from high inflation and high unemployment. The last time the country experienced such an episode was in the 1970s and early 1980s.
“How long it lasts or how big it gets, it’s too soon to tell,” said Greenspan. “We’ll know it when we get on top of it.”

We Know Where the Tax Break Went (electoral-vote.com)
…The theory behind trickle-down economics….
.
It never works out like that, though, not under Ronald Reagan, and certainly not under George W. Bush. Now, with year-end reports in across Wall Street, it’s clear that it didn’t work like that under Donald Trump, either. The news on Monday is that corporations bought back $1 trillion of their own stock in the first full year under the new tax law. That leaves the previous record of $718 billion, set in 2015, in the dust (even if adjusting for inflation).
Naturally, stock buybacks do not “trickle down” to the masses, as only half the country has money invested in the stock market at all, and for the majority of those it’s in the form of retirement accounts that they cannot touch for decades. If the GOP had promised prosperity for some people, and in 30 years, then they could fairly claim to have delivered. But they promised prosperity now, and for everyone, and that most certainly did not—and will not—happen due to the tax cut. And even for the 50% of the country that owns stock, things are not so rosy. The Dow Jones index is down 12% from its high point in January. (Z)

The Fed might be trying to get rates up enough that they have something to work with when the economy goes south. Without, of course, hastening that southward trend.
This is how House Democrats plan to obtain ‘15 to 20 years’ of Trump’s tax returns next year
According to the Post, Democrats plan on using “a little-known 1924 provision in the Internal Revenue Code” that requires the treasury secretary to deliver the tax returns of any individual if requested by the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee or the Joint Committee on Taxation.
The Trump administration would likely challenge this in court and demand that Congress deliver a legal justification for what would essentially be a subpoena of the president’s taxes.

re: #208 Hecuba’s daughter
So — what’s up with this? Banning bump stocks? Trump administration is doing something that really upsets its base?
The NRA previously said they’d be okay with this specifically because it’s not legislation and Trump’s admin felt a need to be seen doing something before another one gets used in a mass shooting. They also probably wanted to give Senate Republicans a pretext to ignore any bill the incoming Dem House sends their way. This ban will get challenged in court and likely tossed since bump stocks don’t actually create machine guns as defined under federal law and there’s no current legal basis for the ATF issuing such a rule, so I think the best way to view it is as a stalling tactic. They’re hoping to push real action on the entire issue beyond the 2020 election cycle.

Judge asks if Flynn’s conduct is “treasonous activity”
From CNN’s Katelyn Polantz
Judge Emmet Sullivan asked in court today if Michael Flynn’s conduct “rises to the level of treasonous activity?”
Prosecutor Brandon Van Grack, speaking for the special counsel’s office, said prosecutors did not consider charging Flynn with treason.
Then Sullivan asked again: “Could he have been charged with treason?”
Van Grack wouldn’t go there.

Yep.
Although according to Wikipedia, it’s an old (1799) law, but not exactly a fundamental part of American jurisprudence:
Only two people have ever been indicted on charges of violating the Act, one in 1802 and the other in 1852. Neither was convicted of violating the Act.
Maybe the Trump Administration will make history!

This is how House Democrats plan to obtain ‘15 to 20 years’ of Trump’s tax returns next year
- the chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee are authorized to request the president’s tax returns from the IRS to conduct an investigation.
- they can but dont have to disclose to anyone that they’ve requested the president’s returns.
- oh, and it’s not like a subpoena. it’s a black and white law.
so explain how this law applies to everyone else and not you because its important for the american public to know that the IRS treats you the same as any other taxpayer without any preferential treatment.
also, whether the committees decide to disclose to the full houses is a different matter.

I am very concerned about the Flynn case. Why would anyone agree to cooperate with Mueller if the judge ignores the sentencing recommendations of the Mueller team and imposes a harsh sentence on them? After what happened with Cohen, this may discourage others.
Against the backdrop of his pending sentencing, let’s look back at Traitor Flynn’s rant against Hillary:
FLYNN: That’s right. Lock her up. That’s right. Lock her up. I’m going to tell you what, it’s unbelievable; it’s unbelievable.

FLYNN: Yes; I use — I use #neverHillary; that’s what I use. I have called on Hillary Clinton, I have called on Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race because she, she put our nation’s security at extremely high risk with her careless use of a private e-mail server.

FLYNN: You guys are good. Damn right; exactly right. There’s nothing wrong with that.

It really only discourages putting rank fuckery in a defendant’s Aid in Sentencing filing. Flynn’s lawyers really did him a huge disservice when they cast doubt on the FBI’s conduct during his interview. The Judge also seems to be giving Flynn another bite at the apple, saying he can postpone his ruling if Flynn wants to go back and cooperate more.

Flynn’s own actions are directly responsible for what comes next.
Mueller was going with stick/carrot for the first to cooperate - which was Flynn, everyone after him gets a worse deal. That still stands.
The Judge rightfully points out that Flynn’s getting a sweetheart deal considering that he could and should have been charged with espionage/treason among other felonies. Prosecutors know this too. But they don’t want to jeopardize the investigations.
This should have been a no-drama situation, but Flynn’s actions have revealed that he’s still being disingenuous, which required the additional questions this AM. The judge can disregard the sentencing recommendations as being too lenient (this does happen periodically).

Still cooperating with prosecutors… this is bad news for Trumpworld.
That means Flynn still has more to share with prosecutors about the inner workings of Trumpworld? Yup, that’s what it means.
That means bad things for all things Trump.
And as to Sullivan’s earlier statements about treason and why he wasn’t charged; this all makes sense too - Sullivan wanted to know why the prosecutors went with such a light charge and sentencing recommendation given the criminality they uncovered with Flynn. Again, it goes to Mueller’s intention to cut good deals with those first to flip, and progressively harsher deals as he works up the food chain. It’s what good prosecutors do.

He got a call from a Trump surrogate saying it would be a shame if anything happened to his nice family.
Probably was told by Mueller that he was endangering prosecutions higher up the food chain and that Flynn had given them more than they wanted to let on.
Judge Sullivan repeats he won’t make any promises when it comes time to deliver his sentence.

Different spanks for different ranks is a looooong standing sore point in the army.
Abu Ghraib is an example. Nobody above the rank E5 was ever even charged.
Damn it. I really really wanted to hang that treason canard out today, because I really do think he is a traitor.
Anybody have a guess about why Flynn’s lawyers put that shit in the memo, like do y’all think he pushed for it himself or what? Because it seems to have backfired spectacularly and man if they put that in there on their own they should really be refunding some of his money.
re: #283 Hecuba’s daughter
I am very concerned about the Flynn case. Why would anyone agree to cooperate with Mueller if the judge ignores the sentencing recommendations of the Mueller team and imposes a harsh sentence on them? After what happened with Cohen, this may discourage others.
Or it might make some of them come clean knowing if they hold back they will get whacked doubly hard.
I think it sends a message to Paulie Manafort, Stone and others that may now come out because they may fear they are already known due to others working with Mueller and keeping quiet means things are going to get tougher and tougher.
The jail time meter is running…

while NOTHING happens to Hillary for selling 20% of our Uranium to Russia in exchange for $100’s of millions?
Yes, I remember well the investigation, facts revealed and indisputable, the prosecution, and the plea bargain that settled this case.

What was in what memo? That Flynn was “tricked” into lying?
Looking for some other info, I saw this as the .sig on a wingnut’s post:
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other”.~John Adams 1798
Now, I’ve considered looking it up to see if it’s even a true quote but lets suppose it is because that’s a perfect explanation for Trumpism: that the system was designed presuming only decent people would run it and that’s why the GOP has been so successful is ratfucking the nation since 1980.

I thought it was the opposite: that mankind is by nature self-seeking and driven by self-interest, thus requiring checks and balances, etc. If we were all virtuous no government would be needed….
re: #338 Sir John Barron
What was in what memo? That Flynn was “tricked” into lying?
In part, Sullivan seemed annoyed because Flynn’s lawyers used a recent sentencing memo not to signal remorse, but rather to imply that Flynn was railroaded. For instance, they mentioned that Flynn had been told that the FBI interview could be quicker if he didn’t have a lawyer present, and that he wasn’t explicitly warned that lying to the FBI would be a crime.
re: #338 Sir John Barron

Sort of, his lawyers made a point of noting to the court that the FBI agents never warned him that lying to them would be a felony. I’m guessing it’s a fairly common thing in such plea deals to try and mitigate the seriousness of the offense but the way they did it here really seems to have pissed Sullivan off.

Apparently, it’s a legit quote. But of course, there’s also context, and they tend to leave out this important lead into the quote:
because we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, • would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net.
I tend to disagree with the “unbridled by religion” part, but I can forgive Adams, a man of his time, not understanding that morality and religion are not the same thing.

It is a real quote - but it’s only part of it. Here’s the full quote, from a letter he wrote, dated October 11, 1798 to officers of the Massachusetts militia:
But should the people of America once become capable of that deep simulation towards one another, and towards foreign nations, which assumes the language of justice and moderation, while it is practising iniquity and extravagance, and displays in the most captivating manner the charming pictures of candour, frankness, and sincerity, while it is rioting in the rapine and insolence, this country will be the most miserable habitation in the world. Because we have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, and licentiousness would break the strongest cords of our Constitution, as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
Note that Adams is equating morality with religion. He’s using religion as a synonym for moral thinking opposed to greed, revenge, and other motives that, as we can now clearly see, make the workings of democracy difficult.
That sig line is cherry-picked to make the claim that Adams was a proponent of organized religion and an advocate of a close relationship between church and state.
That’s simply not the case.
Context shows this. Let’s look at this excerpt from a letter Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson on December 12, 1816:
I return the Analysis of Dupuis, with my thanks for the loan of it. It is but a faint miniature of the original. I have read that original in twelve volumes, besides a thirteenth of plates. I have been a lover and a reader of romances all my life, from Don Quixote and Gil Bias to the Scottish Chiefs, and a hundred others. For the last year or two I have devoted myself to this kind of study, and have read fifteen volumes of Grimm, seven volumes of Tucker’s Neddy Search, twelve volumes of Dupuis, and Tracy’s Analysis, and four volumes of Jesuitical History! Romances all! I have learned nothing of importance to me, for they have made no change in my moral or religious creed, which has, for fifty or sixty years, been contained in four short words, “Be just and good.” In this result they all agree with me.
I must acknowledge, however, that I have found in Dupuis more ideas that were new to me, than in all the others. My conclusion from all of them is universal toleration. Is there any work extant so well calculated to discredit corruptions and impostures in religion as Dupuis?
Once again Adams equates morality with his personal religious beliefs, which boil down to being “just and good.”
Adams dismissed works of formal religious philosophy and theology as “romances” and equates them to fairy tales.
Adam’s correspondent Jefferson, of course, was a celebrated Deist who was so disdainful of religion that he famously cut much of the text out of his personal New Testament and made his own version of the Bible and Jefferson and Adams shared similar sentiments.
Anyone trying to say that a founding father was sympathetic to the idea that the United States was founded as an explicitly Christian nation might want to look at someone else besides Adams; he was not sympathetic to such an idea, despite efforts to cherry-pick quote from him and portray him as some kind of Christian fundie.
Frankly, Nixon is starting to look like a piker.

They are apparently reclassifying bump stocks as machine guns, making them functionally illegal under the National Firearms Act. The problem is enforcement. Those in possession would have to turn them in.
Without any teeth to enforcement, it’s an empty gesture. Maybe Trump thinks he can blame Democrats for enforcing the law.
That puts an onus on responsible facility operators to forbid their use. Fine with me, that’s gonna get added to the rules everywhere that disallows full auto. No help at all in the backwoods hold my beer crowd. Yikes.

But lets say Johnny Dip gets pulled over for DUI and that’s in the backseat. Boom, 10 year vacation at Club Fed, never own a gun again.
It’ll weed them out over time & no more will be made. They aren’t exactly without breakage either.
In the end it will fall on local prosecutors to do their job. Sorta like hate crime laws…

my approach to all this
draconian enforcement for demonstrated irresponsibility
weeds out the reckless
hopefully causes the otherwise responsible to control their weapons at all times

The courts may end up sanctioning the legality of such a rule, but I wouldn’t count on it. Nothing about this method of banning bump stocks comports with the legal definition of a machine gun.

So, just ran to the store to get some half & half for my office coffee. While on the road, a version of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer came on and now, I’m officially in the holiday spirit. It was this version, and might be my favorite Christmas song:

We used to run a small “opry” and this song was a specialty of one of our “sons.” My husband just loved it, would request them to perform it every year, and would laugh all the way through. Good memory. (He also loved Mercury Blues, and they always played it for him.)
Watch Bill Mitchell go from furious about Judge Sullivan to deciding that this is actually all part of the grand plan in about 6 minutes.
