So this is how I imagine the White House is tonight:

The Second Coming

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Um, no. It appears it was written by Rudy Giuliani in a peyote-fueled fever dream while also drunk on mezcal after reading Carlos Castaneda.

Unfortunately for the White House, this seems to be his standard state of consciousness in his everyday persona. It’s a remarkable show of will, but disastrous for his Don, err…President.

Ozymandias
by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Nah, that is a hoped for result, and should be. The relevant Yeats line is “the center cannot hold”. And it won’t. The house of cards is beginning to collapse. Once it starts, there is no return. The rough beast will slouch toward Washington and consume it’s prey.

It is inevitable.

Trump confidant Roger Stone loses bid to get evidence tossed (American Broadcasting Company)

The hits keep coming for Trumpworld.

A judge has denied Trump confidant Roger Stone’s efforts to suppress evidence in the case against him, according to a court opinion made public Tuesday.

Stone is one of a half dozen aides and advisers to President Donald Trump who were charged as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. He is accused of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing a congressional proceeding, and is set to stand trial in November in Washington’s federal court.

Stone had asked a judge to throw out the evidence seized from 18 FBI search warrants.

If you had three every week, that would be 156 a year.

The CDC reports the rate has climbed significantly for the general population, reaching 13.0 per 100,000.

Extrapolating the 156 to those numbers, that would be 156*16.67 (approx), or 2,600 a year per 100,000 sailors.

Military and veteran suicides have been significantly higher than the national average for some time, and no one really has a good explanation why that might be yet.

I imagine the US Navy will be looking into this. The men involved are not related by division, rating, or work. It could be merely a coincidence, or it might be something else. I imagine NCIS will be looking into it to see if something connects them that is not readily apparent.

Moreover, the compliment of 6,000 on an aircraft carrier is when the ship’s airwing is aboard and the ship is deployed at full strength.

In drydock there is no airwing, and much of the ship’s company is reduced from full strength, either sent to military schools or transferred to other commands.

re: #31 Dread Pirate

With no air wing aboard the crew is around 3,500. Six months into it’s two year dry-dock period I would expect the crew to be significantly less than that. The US suicide rate for males is ~21 per 100,000, annually.
So, 3 per 3,500 in a year would be a serious statistical anomaly. In a week it’s a crisis

I calculated using only males. While the crew is coed, the male-female ratio is drastically below that in the civilian population

RIP Robert Hunter, lyricist for the Grateful Dead and solo artist

So many songs of his that I love, but this is still my fave;

Gone are the days when the ox fall down,
Take up the yoke and plow the fields around.
Gone are the days when the ladies said’ “Please,
Gentle Jack Jones won’t you come to me.”

Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down,
And it looks like the old man’s getting on….

How anti-vaxxers target grieving moms and turn them into crusaders (NBC)

Fifteen miles west of Minneapolis, a billboard looms over a field of tall grass beside Highway 55. The sign features a photo of Evee Clobes, a baby girl with sparkling eyes, flushed cheeks and an expression frozen in wonder. Next to her face are the words, “HEALTHY BABIES DON’T JUST DIE.” The web address of a group opposed to mandatory vaccinations is at the bottom.

Since her death in March, Evee has served as a literal poster child for the anti-vaccination movement. Her face and chunky legs — adorned with Band-Aids from her shots — are featured on anti-vaccination websites and billboards. The story of her death is told at protests, read aloud at statehouses, and offered up by her mother and other activists as proof of the horror vaccines can bring.

Evee’s story, as her mother Catelin Clobes tells it, is of a healthy 6-month-old who died 36 hours after a checkup where she got several vaccinations. Clobes and an army of online activists now say the vaccines caused Evee’s death. That belief, and Clobes’ willingness to make Evee part of a national media campaign, have turned the grieving mom into a rising star in the anti-vaccination world. Her Facebook posts draw hundreds of thousands of views, and multiple fundraisers set up by anti-vaccination activists on her behalf have raised tens of thousands of dollars. She has become a champion of other anti-vaccination parents around the country.

But there’s a problem with the story at the heart of this crusade, and with Clobes’ new role as an anti-vaccine heroine. Her local medical examiner has ruled that the evidence — collected in an autopsy and by first responders — shows Evee accidentally suffocated while co-sleeping with her mother.

Lawrence VanDyke is President Donald Trump’s pick for a seat on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Conservatives love it; Democrats? Not so much.

Some of those views include writings that espouse creationism being part of school textbooks, strong opinions on local control of public lands and a stint with a non-profit that critics have called anti-LGBTQ.

America, 2019 (and why Trump is President):

Reader Opinion: Theory of Evolution

There seems to be confusion on what a theory is. The theory of evolution does not make the theory of evolution a fact. All the existing collateral of what we know as fact that supports the theory of evolution does not make the theory of evolution a fact. It remains a theory until someone mathematically proves the theory, that is when it becomes a fact, in other words a Theorem.

There are all sorts of theories on different aspects of our Universe. […]

It is great to teach theories. But to teach them as fact is wrong, no matter how old the theory or how much collateral support there is for the theory.

It is not so great to limit the teaching of theories based on personal belief. Personally, I don’t think mankind will mathematically prove the theory of evolution or the theory of creationism. But if we are going to teach one we should also be teaching the other.

Anti-vaxxers more and more are also leveraging other people’s problems (such as a baby dead from SIDS) and hijacking the photographs and any information they can find to promote their religion.

In the meantime, The Philippines has declared a polio outbreak and emergency.

Back in February Rep. Adam Schiff went after Facebook and Google for their massive antivax groups. Both companies said they would crack down on such content.

I just did a search on Google for “vaccine injury” and on the first page the Websites are all news or science organisations debunking such claims.

I’ve been sweeping up acorns from the patio every 48 hours. The squirrels and 25 year old volunteer oak tree on the edge of my neighbors yard have gone literally nuts this year.

We have four black walnut trees on our property and this is a banner year for walnuts. It happens about every three years. We’re taking hundreds of pounds of tennis ball size walnuts.

Last time, the neighbor found out why you don’t keep glass topped patio tables in your yard (the falling walnuts broke it) or why some metal roofing is a bad idea. I think they cut their BW tree down because of that.

The deck is currently lost and I need combat gear on to go outside. The squirrels are even spurning the peanuts I offer.

Johnson-supporting Brexiteers really are like Trumpers:

Johnson faces political humiliation, but that will play well with some voters

[…]

There’s been much talk in recent weeks about Johnson’s plans for a people vs parliament election. The idea is the Conservatives would run on an anti-establishment ticket - pitching their party as the radical choice that is actually listening to what voters want. They would depict Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour - alongside the Liberal Democrats and SNP - as ignoring the will of the people.

The supreme court judgment could play into this narrative. Anything that adds to the view that Johnson is the prime minister committed to delivering Brexit at whatever cost is something that can be used to the Tories’ advantage. The voters Johnson and Cummings are pitching to in any snap poll are different to those who gave David Cameron his majority in 2015. The Tories this time hope to pick up seats in traditional Labour heartlands that voted heavily to leave - from the Midlands and north to Wales. Current polling has proved encouraging to government figures that their plan is working. “It’s very messy but I am getting a lot of supportive messages from constituents,” says one Conservative MP of the current political chaos.

I always dug bands that had lyricists who did nothing but contribute the words, Keith Reid for Procol Harum, Peter Brown with Cream, Peter Sinfield with King Crimson, Bernie Taupin & Elton John, etc…

If those are old trees you could be sitting on a gold mine.

Very old trees. Alas, they are on the easement which belongs to the city.

And yes, they would be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Three trees that I do not think I could touch fingers if I gave them a hug.

I actually wanted to cut down one of them so we could do a cutout allowing us to put in a driveway extension to pull out onto the side street instead of backing out onto the main road. I don’t think the city will allow it.

And they keep planting other trees about 20’ from the black walnuts that continuously die out. Two pear trees, this last one has like one live branch. We babied that bad boy too (just like the last). We cannot get other trees to take. We’ve planted several in our backyard, too…and no go. We had a giant pine tree that fell down a few years ago. Since then, nothing grows (trees, at least…the plants all are fine). We’ve planted trees with 2” trunks and this last one (which is still mostly alive) cost $700 and is about 6” across. Nothing thrives and all, thus far, have eventually died.

And my neighbor has a fetish about cutting trees down. She has repeatedly asked me to cut down some trees that border our properties. And every time I ask her if the tree is healthy, I will split the cost of evaluating it with her, etc. And not one evaluation came back that the trees had to come down.

When reached for comment, a State Department spokesperson said, “Mr. Rudy Giuliani is a private citizen and acts in a personal capacity as a lawyer for President Trump. He does not speak on behalf of the U.S. Government.”

If a sitting President cannot be prosecuted for his crimes, why does he need standing counsel?

130
MsJ  Sep 25, 2019 • 7:09:18am

The call begins with Trump congratulating Zelensky on his election victory, but quickly devolves into the president pressing for an investigation of his political rivals and endorsing an apparent conspiracy theory. He seems to suggest Hillary Clinton’s private email server is in Ukraine and asserts that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation started with that country.

“I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it,” Trump says, according to the transcript.

He adds later: “There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it. … It sounds horrible to me.”

Zelensky replied that “my candidate” for the prosecutor job “will look into the situation, specifically to the company that you mentioned in this issue.”

At the outset of the call, Trump also asks for Ukraine’s help in finding the location of the Democratic National Committee server that U.S. officials say was hacked by Russian intelligence in the run-up to the 2016 election.

“The server, they say Ukraine has it,” Trump says according to the transcript. “I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it.”

The transcript, in keeping with White House practice, is a memorandum of a telephone conversation and is not a verbatim account of the conversation. The text reflects the notes and memories of officials in the Situation Room. A disclaimer in the transcript warns that a number of factors “can affect the accuracy of the record, including poor telecommunications connections and variations in accent.”

America, 2019.

The U.S. military has warned service members about the potential for a mass shooter at screenings of the Warner Bros. film Joker, which has sparked wide concerns from, among others, the families of those killed during the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

The U.S. Army confirmed on Tuesday that the warning was widely distributed after social media posts related to extremists classified as “incels,” were uncovered by intelligence officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In a September 18th email, service members were instructed to remain aware of their surroundings and “identify two escape routes” when entering theaters. In the event of a shooting, they were instructed to “run, hide, fight.”

“Run if you can,” the safety notice said. “If you’re stuck, hide (also known as ‘sheltering in place’), and stay quiet. If a shooter finds you, fight with whatever you can.”

If I understand things correctly, what California got was permission after they proved they were stricter; it’s also why I think the Trump admin has 0% chance of removing the permission because California isn’t violating the law at all. In a normal administration, that’s all that would be required. NM is joining CA in the fight by doing this.

re: #129 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

If a sitting President cannot be prosecuted for his crimes, why does he need standing counsel?

More importantly, in my definitely-not-a-lawyer opinion, what’s the difference? Is it any better/worse/the same if President Trump tried to extort dirt-digging from the Ukraine government via “official” channels, or via his “personal attorney” (Rudy Ferretsbane)?

Unless he can somehow try to disassociate/disavow/throw Giuliani under the bus, it seems like his tiny hands are dirty in any case.

Trump Insists Impeachment Is Good for Him Politically

that may be

it’s also very good for Dems politically
(i wonder what he thinks about the effects on the rest of the R party who are not himself)
—-
it’s clear that any actual ‘business’ the trump admin was doing is going to grind further to a halt. mcconnell already stifles every bill the house sends over.

so while all this posturing goes on (yes from both sides), the Dem’s have to show they can walk and chew gum. That we can govern:

a disqus commenter:

Democrats need to continue to push a legislative agenda geared towards raising the middle class. Issues like health care, student loan relief, immigration reform, minimum wage increases, strengthening of unions, climate change, etc. We cannot just be the anti Trump party. We need to show the public what we offer and what we want to accomplish if given the opportunity.

Last year we had squirrels in such abundance that they were crazily running across streets in search of acorns and getting squashed, falling out of trees, etc. This year when the wind blows the acorns fall like rain but there are relatively few squirrels.

im guessing
- trump wont be able to constantly ‘distract’ this
- impeachment /ukraine is gonna be front and center in the news —- a lot
- and with any other washington business, little as there was, now dead, there’s nothing to push it off the front pages
- essentially the dems have the microphone/megaphone
- while the ‘rs are really good at exploiting / coordinating the megaphone, they’re gonna start to look really stupid after a while (if what i think is gonna come out actually does

- the dems dont have to handle all aspects of the impeachment story - most of it will run by itself
- so while they have the collective mic, they have the opportunity to push another very large story - that we have been and continue to be the adults in the room. we have plans and ideas. and we don’t abuse the system.

Yeah, I’m almost worried that if we take the whole house of cards down at once (Left Twitter has Pence clearly incriminated by Don Donnie’s side of the conversation), someone’s going to try to make her Pelosi’s VP—and I’m not confident that, if she’s approved for that position, Nancy wouldn’t try to resign afterwards.

Ummm. I am really not thinking this morning. Obviously, that’s two concepts being conflated: that she “may still have a chance at having won, in a way”, and that “that is a bad idea because she won’t win an election from a 1-year term any better than from outside the WH”.

Scene:

Trump is standing on 5th Avenue next to his body guard, who is pointing a gun at a person standing 10 feet away.

Trump: Shoot this man.

Bodyguard shoots and kills the man.

People: Trump had the man killed.

MAGAs: He did not directly shoot him!

Trump: Everything about that interaction was perfectly normal. Caught them by surprise! When will everyone apologize?

It’s amazing the transformation across the political landscape in the last 48-72 hours.

Like I say, I am still convinced it takes a decisive electoral defeat to get rid of Trump. I do not believe there are 5 GOP senators (much less the number actually required for impeachment) with the integrity to go against Trump, but we simply cannot accept bullying foreign leaders to provide domestic political assistance as “normal” presidential behavior.

True (just IMHO), but unfortunately, there is a non-trivial percentage of the electorate (not to mention those in Congress) who are quite willing to do exactly that, providing that said President is:

A) Donald Trump
B) If necessary, a replacement “Trump”
C) in a pinch, any (R)

So is there any evil, corrupt, immoral, shitty thing these assholes HAVEN’T done? JFC. I mean, I guess in some ways it’s good that they’re mostly bloated, stupid, arrogant dipshits. But this truly highlights the amount of damage the right wing machine has done to us as a country. We’re more stupid and mean than ever, and that never ends well for anyone. Being awful is profitable and rewarded. Until it isn’t. I have to believe there’s a bottom to this and when we climb back out there’s a world left to fix. I’m happy about this turn around, but there’s a way to go before more people end up on jail ( and no one’s left to pardon them either) which is really the only thing that’s going to put a stop to it. Jail and seizure of assets. That shit belongs to US. I want our country back, so we can do better and make sure this shit doesn’t happen again. Can we learn from this? I hope so but we need leaders willing to work and who can unite us. We really are up against evil shit here. They’ve shown us who they are, we need to believe them. They’ve proven it over and over.

Integrity can be defined as what you do when nobody’s looking. They have none.

What? You think they care? Their goal is to enrich the wealthy at the expense of everyone else and to make sure that oligarchs are running every nation. The “good” ones have no interest in anyone else; the bad ones, like Trump and the current GOP, take pleasure in intensifying the suffering of others.

We’re always gonna have toxic assholes, our job is to minimize them, not promote that shit. There is no one fix either, we’re well past that. But this reality TV way of electing people is a hot mess, the whole fundraising and pandering to fear and loathing and a media who amplifies the worst shit, it has to GO. I just did my first thread and am going to add a few observations:..What we are seeing is pure panic. Biden is just one of 12 candidates right now, and we have 4-5 months to go before the first votes. So why not wait until the herd thins a little, or even if he gets the nomination before all this? Because Trump’s numbers are the most static and underwater ever. He never gets above even 45% and never below 41-42 percent. He’s running out of time to even get people to accept him let alone like him.

His only hope is that Democrats reject him for someone else, or even nominate Tulsi or Marianne. Which is why the r-fuckers keep pouring money into their campaigns. Pour all the money in they want-they are at best 1-2% and have no chance of even winning a single caucus, let alone primary. But Dems are not rejecting Biden, so the option is to take him, and enough of the top five for one of their favorites to win by default.
