So, this Thanksgiving, people across America will echo the greeting the natives offered to the pilgrims;

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving fresh from cold and rainy CenTex.

We will be consuming non poultry, all pork boney slabs for our meal of thanks today.

Someone has also taken an early residence next to the house which is fine with us.

Morning Lizards. Happy Thanksgiving. Traditional Thanksgiving dinner scaled back for two people with a special treat for the newest member of the household today. Have to run up to the store to pick up a couple of items I had originally decided not to prepare (Who needs hot rolls and candied yams?) but changed my mind about. Figured I would also pick up one of those “fresh” meals for the fur ball as her special meal.

Our T-giving feast has to be moved to Saturday as it is not a holiday here in Germany, but they have Black Friday - go figure.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I hope your travels and conversations with family and friends go smoothly. Currently sitting down and peeling 10 pounds of potatoes for my garlic mashed taters. I made a crumb topping apple pie and I’m looking forward to seeing family at my dad’s house. I still have to put the snow tires on the Honda, let’s see what I break.

Give thanks — the balloons will fly!

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was set to step off as normal as of early Thursday morning — following fears this week that wind gusts could ground the celebration’s famous flight of floats.

“As of now the balloons will fly!” the NYPD’s Midtown North precinct tweeted just after 7 a.m.

Police reminded parade-goers that sustained winds of 23 miles per hour and gusts above 34 mph would force them to ground the iconic balloons — with SpongeBob SquarePants the first to be stopped.

I didn’t know there was such a thing.

As anyone who uses Twitter has no doubt noticed, it can be a dark, bitter abyss to spew bile and rage.

But the social media platform can also be a place to share joy and happiness, and that’s the direction Tom Hanks has decided to take in his latest venture: reading positive tweets that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

The premise is this: internationally recognized nice guy Tom Hanks reads nice tweets tweeted by nice people.

In deep blue districts in which no mainstream (by GOP standards) candidate will run because they have no chance, the very worst of humanity sometimes rises to the challenge. Of course, most mainstream GOP candidates these days are at least flirting with fascism, and are barely disguised white nationalists.

With it being the holiday season, I have a craving for the traditional vinegar pie. Mrs. Fish didn’t think to get the supplies when she was out shopping yesterday, so I may have to make a run tomorrow. We have a friend visiting from out of town this weekend, so I might just have to prep the pie on Sunday so I can indulge myself as a recovery mechanism.

the disgusting part is that they call it “Black Friday”. And it has f*ck all to do with anything except as a sales and marketing gimmick

I could deal with it if it also came with the holiday.

They used to have a late November holiday, Buß- und Bettag, the “Day of Prayer and Atonement”, which I guess was a sort of Protestant Yom Kippur, which we then used as an ersatz Thanksgiving, but that was abolished to help pay for their new old-age health care insurance law.

I/we really liked Seasons 1 and 2, but thought Season 3 was starting to slip a bit into repetitive dumbassery. An opinion only strengthened by the time we’d finished. Some shows - however good - just can’t seem to keep the quality going from year to year (especially those centered on a kid cast). Hate to say it, but we’re quite unenthusiastic about Season 4.

I think Trump acts like Zhao Gao by instinct—just thinking of the “is Conan a male or female dog” fiasco….

The Story Behind “Calling a Deer a Horse”

The second Qin emperor, Qin Er Shi (秦二世 ) who reigned from 221 to 206 B.C., had a prime minister named Zhao Gao. Zhao Gao was very ambitious and had treasonous ambitions. He wanted to attempt a coup of Qin Er Shi but didn’t know who in the Emperor’s court would go along with his plans.

One day Zhao Gao presented the Emperor with a deer, but said it was a swift horse.

“Prime Minister, you are clearly mistaken. That is a deer.’

Zhao Gao, prepared for this response replied, “If that is the case, Your Majesty, ask the member of your court what it is.”

Some of the court remained quiet. Some, knowing how treacherous Zhao Gao was, went along with his claim. Others, called a spade a spade and told the Emperor it was a deer.

Knowing who his allies were, those royal courtiers who said the animal was a deer were executed. The cunning Zhao Gao knew who his allies were.

This is true (I just liked the idea that Melanoma had screwed around on him too). My oldest son is taller than me by a bit. But his mother is taller for a woman. He looks (build and height also) like my grandfather (dads side). My dad and I take more after my grandma, who was about 4’ 10”, both dad and I are around 5’ 8” or so. Grandpa was about 6’ and that is about how tall my oldest son is.

I am an ex lawyer and the two times I have been called to jury duty here in Arizona, they knew I was an ex lawyer, but not licensed in Arizona, so yes, of course I got put on the jury. What’s helpful to know is that my employer, the evil too big to fail bank, continues to pay us when we’re on jury duty, judges and attorneys know this, so it’s more likely I’ll be selected, absent any conflict of interest. *sigh* They need to pay more so that people who work in the “gig economy” can participate without it being a hardship.

GMA this morning had an interesting story about family pictures and teenagers. The takeaway was that parents need to really ask their middle and high school kids if it’s ok to put pictures up of them in the internet. It’s one thing to have them in photo albums that you show relatives. It’s an entirely different thing showing them to all of your friends or anyone else who might have access to your online accounts.

Eric is done growing. Barron? Probably not. And it is clear that Melania is taller than either of her parents, and DT is taller than Fred. Not sure about Mary, but I’d be surprised if Fred would have married a woman much taller than himself. So Barron is a real outlier. What bothers me about him is that he never smiles, rarely looks up from the ground, doesn’t interact with others around him. The Obama girls were always interacting with the parents and others, smiling, laughing, acting like normal children. This boy I really worry for…

Brings back bad memories. Parents always complained about my hair no matter how I cut it. Kids goofed on it. My third grade teacher called me “N-Word-Head” and that stuck all the way through the end of high school. Got so sick and tired of people making fun of my hair that I cut it off completely and I’ve gone with a shaved head ever since.

Eastland Co. becomes ‘2nd Amendment Sanctuary County’

The Eastland County Commissioners Court adopted a resolution Monday making them a “2nd Amendment Sanctuary County.”

According to a social media post from Eastland County Today, the commissioners court adopted the resolution, which aims to “declare its support for the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Texas Constitution protecting citizens’ inalienable and individual right to keep and bear arms.”

Eastland County joins Stephens and Throckmorton Counties in the Big Country, and several others in the State of Texas.

Two other Texas counties, Kaufman and Palo Pinto, approved similar measures Tuesday as well, bringing the total number of 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries in Texas to at least 12.

Edwards, Hudspeth, Presidio, Mitchell, Hood, Parker, Smith, and Ellis counties already have 2nd Amendment protections in place.

Other municipalities across the country are also passing 2nd Amendment Sanctuary laws to protect their constituents against from possible infringement on their right to bear arms.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Very busy kitchen this morning. Niece made cinnamon rolls early, made butter right before noon, and has bread dough ready for baking later this afternoon. Two stuffed pumpkins (one vegetarian, one not) and a 9lb turkey breast are in the oven. And there is further squash and other dishes in various states of preparation.

Expect about a dozen people total for dinner. Four family and the rest guests.

The house cats expressed great interest in the butter-making and one appears to be a great fan of dairy products in general.

In case anyone needs a bash function that captures stdout and stderr into separate variables and returns the command’s exit code as well.

catch() {
eval "$({

  ret=$?;
  printf '%q=%q\n' "$1" "$__1" >&2;
  exit $ret

ret="$?";
printf '%s=%q\n' "$2" "$__2" >&2;
printf '( exit %q )' "$ret" >&2;

Half the op-eds are revolving around how to make the dinner/family experience bearable by ignoring the political shitshow in DC. The other half seems to be about how to beat down the know-nothing GOPers in our midst by fact checking your ignorant relatives with some facts.

I’d take the latter approach, but think most if not all of my family would prefer Trump be removed from office. I’ll probably spend most of the time ignoring the football games too.

Under any other admin headed by Democrat, GOP would have already impeached

Keep up effort to roll back GOP in all races at all times.

Trump is a clear and present danger to the nation and is a corrupt.
Republicans defend the indefensible no matter the evidence. Facts don’t matter to them.
Use your time between now and election day to get out the vote and counter GOP.
Move heaven and earth to defeat Trump and see impeachment through to end.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Our daughter is home and we are having an old friend of mine over for the dinner. Not a lot of family left or nearby and the few of those are best served from a distance.
My band was supposed to do a show last night that fell through 2 weeks ago, but it allowed me to see an old rock and roller who had a stroke just about a year ago. And it was a day or so after I had seen him at a party. They almost made it, then he got in a horrible accident which required long term surgery and rehab, and the music industry changed.
But him on keys and his bass player on guitar did an acoustic act that brought out a bunch of fans and friends. It was good to get a few words with him. He has a tough road in front of him, but he sounded good.
He ran sound for us back when and our bands did some shows and benefits.
So later today we will face time with our sons and wives and grand children.
And it’s not snowing.
Have a great day in whatever you do.

re: #41 The Pie Overlord!

They don’t have Thanksgiving in Israel but בלאק פריידיי is a real thing.

There’s actually been a growing trend of celebrating the holiday in Israel in the past few years, mostly originating from Israel’s “Anglo” communities (Jews whose families came to Israel from North America and the UK).
Will be attending a Thanksgiving event myself, with a menu promising turkey, butternut squash soup, stuffing, corn on a cob, apple pie and pretty much all the tasty goodies that are likely to knock me out before I’m even halfway through…
Also, even though it’s called the same, Black Friday actually has little to do with Friday itself in Israel, since it runs Thursday through Monday (and Friday itself is a short work day with closing at noon on account of the Sabbath - making it a one-day event is a bad idea on a day where most stores are only open for 5 hours tops).
