Nancy is shrewder than people were giving her credit for. No knock on you but I think a lot of people ignored that this was the woman who whipped out a majority of House D’s against the Iraq war resolution and later for ACA. She’s easily the most politically astute speaker we’ve had since Tip.

Regarding the Rick Scott “hostage” video posted downstairs:

A friendly reminder that Rick Scott is a criminal, who, like most white collar felons, when he was caught stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from Medicare, escaped punishment by paying a fine. His Senate job is to enrich himself and his fellow oligarchs and to suppress the rights of the poor and minorities. Meanwhile, Blagojevich is spending 14 years in prison for something far less damaging to our nation than Trump’s crime.

And all the while this is being done, Dems are still working on House issues related to issues. This is why Trump’s calling them Do Nothing is going to be a fail because Pelosi and the House Dems can say “Look we passed this but McConnell the self professed Reaper blocked votes on it.” Mitch may be smart but he may have started slipping when he tied his boat to Trump’s.

Only true if every Democratic ad points out that the House passed hundreds of bills that the “Grim Reaper” let die on his desk. Republicans are what happens when you live in the mirror universe of Star Trek: their Robin Hood steals from the poor to give to the rich.

I worked at BASF in the ‘80’s. My manager and his manager told Jew jokes to me all the time. I complained and they said if I didn’t have a “sense of humor” I could quit. I made an official complaint & then I left after getting a job offer from GM. I also programmed some totally NON Y2K COMPLAINT code while I worked at BASF because my antisemitic manager was too lazy to create a 4-digit year field. They made vitamins (good for you!) and industrial chemicals (bad for you!) on the same campus.

Also BASF made the Zyklon B that murdered millions.

Pretty much. Philbin’s argument is not a legal one but a political one, namely that the fear of being caught making embarrassing/illegal advice would stop advisors from offering said advice to a future president.

Dershowitz argument flips the whole equation on its head. He’s arguing that “This is in the National Interest, and therefore likely to get me reelected” is the same as “This is likely to get me reelected, and therefore is in the National Interest.” This is like when you first learn about logic, but don’t really get it completely, so you argue that

If A, then B.

Therefore if B, then A.

Which is obviously horseshit, and probably why the Venn Diagram was invented.

It’s this snake oil called MMS or using bleach beyond the limited type of and quantities of recommended that’s the problem.

FDA warms consumers about dangerous and potentially life threatening side effects from MMS

I weighed in on this two threads ago. Essentially the argument (when they’re saying chlorine dioxide isn’t bleach, the stuff they sell for laundry [sodium hypochlorite] is bleach, in other words, something like Biblical legalism) is “see, even water systems or emergency situations use chlorine dioxide, therefore more can’t be harmful.”

Try that with potentially lethal medications, like my epilepsy meds. You’ll get “that’s different because reasons” from them.

The dosage as always is the key, including with chlorine dioxide.

re: #52 Anymouse 🌹🎃

MMS creates chlorine dioxide.

My town doesn’t normally treat water at all (only when we fail a microbe test). When we do, we use Clorox concentrate (8% sodium hypochlorite, rather than the usual strength of Clorox).

Chlorine dioxide is allowed to be used, but is much more dangerous to handle and has to be more closely monitored, with a warning sent out to water customers and the state government if the maximum permitted (the maximum residual disinfectant level) is exceeded in any water test.

The maximum allowed is 0.8mg/L in a water system. This is significantly below what MMS strength is mixed to.

The warning a town using chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant which exceeds the state limit is:

Some infants and young children who drink water containing chlorine dioxide in excess of the MRDL could experience nervous system effects. Similar effects may occur in fetuses of pregnant women who drink water containing chlorine dioxide in excess of the MRDL. Some people may experience anemia.

Add for public notification only:The chlorine dioxide violations reported today include exceedances of the Department of Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure standard within the distribution system that delivers water to consumers. Violations of the chlorine dioxide standard within the distribution system may harm human health based on short-term exposures. Certain groups, including fetuses, infants, and young children, may be especially susceptible to nervous system effects from excessive chlorine dioxide exposure.

These chowderheads want to drink many times the allowable limit in a public water supply.

If we used chlorine dioxide in our public water system and we exceeded the state maximum at any one test point, we would be required to send out the notification to all the customers, and send a so-called Level 1 report to the state (essentially a five-alarm fire).

They would tell us to dump our water tower and flush the town’s water lines, refill everything, and keep doing it until we tested within the state maximum.

That was a challenging class. I didn’t do as well in it as in some of my other classes but the professor was a great one.

Perhaps someone should point out to Republican Senators that being insufficiently loyal to Trump could be enough to get on that kind of hit list.

Destroying a mailbox can be a felony. That would absolutely be impeachable.

Among the misdemeanor dispositions available are: 18 U.S.C. § 1701 (obstruction of mails generally); 18 U.S.C. § 1703(b) (opening, destroying, or detaining mail without authority); 18 U.S.C. § 1707 (theft of property used by postal service); and 18 U.S.C. § 1711 (misappropriation of postal funds). When the charge might best lie under 18 U.S.C. § 1705 (destruction of letter boxes or mail) or 18 U.S.C. § 1706 (injury to mail bags) and in other appropriate circumstances, an applicable misdemeanor may be found in 18 U.S.C. § 641 (theft of government property); or 18 U.S.C. § 1361 (destruction of government property).

Thanks for your informative comments on the issues of bleach in the water supply.

You’re welcome.

Moreover, when you inject sodium hypochlorite or chlorine dioxide into a water system for disinfectant, what you measure at test stations or people’s homes is the residual level of those chemicals. It’s the residual amount which is dangerous if it exceeds EPA standards.

Most of what is injected is converted through natural chemical processes to release chlorine gas to kill microbes.

When we use sodium hypochlorite here in town (we haven’t for nearly a year now), immediately the complaints come in from people in town: My water smells like bleach. How long are we going to have to put up with this? (The answer is “when we get two good microbe tests.” That usually only takes a day or two.)

Yes, that is an interesting possibility.

As I understand it, McConnell’s highest priority is to re-elect his majority. And his second highest is to save Trump’s butt.

I was assuming that he would use the leeway of 3 pro-witness votes. But as you point out, giving cover so his majority could circle the wagons might work even better. At least in the short term.

What he gives up is a lot of congressional prerogatives. But he doesn’t seem too concerned about things like the Constitution anyway.

Tenn. lawmaker introduces resolution recognizing CNN, Washington Post as ‘fake news’

A local state lawmaker has introduced a bill recognizing CNN and the Washington Post as “fake news.”

The resolution by Rep. Micah Van Huss (R-Jonesborough) labels the two news outlets as “fake news and part of the media wing of the Democratic Party.”

It also condemns them for “denigrating our citizens and implying that they are weak-minded followers instead of people exercising their rights that our veterans paid for with their blood.”

“My constituents are tired of fake news, they’re tired of Republicans who don’t fight, so this resolution accomplishes both,” Van Huss told News Channel 11 Wednesday.

“Over 60% of Tennessee voters voted for President Trump, and CNN and The Washington Post denigrated them for doing that.”

I propose an LGF resolution labeling this Van Huss person as a fascist, a liar, a stooge, an ignoramus, and an enemy of America. Do I hear a second?

Basically Graham and Cruz asked Schiff about whether his hypothetical ask on Obama’s behalf of Medvedev to investigate Romney would be cool if there were allegations that Romney’s son was being paid by a corrupt company. Schiff basically told the morons that such is ridiculous, asking a foreign power to investigate your political rival is wrong period.

I just saw the question Cruz and Graham asked on Politico:

The question

Would former President Barack Obama have had the authority to ask for an investigation into Mitt Romney’s son?

Who asked

Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) asked the question to the House managers.

It’s astounding the extent that the GOP has internalized the notion that we should emulate Putin’s Russia and allow autocrats to use their power to harass opponents.

I’d be interested to see how Romney would answer the question.

I live in a small town, dude. I’ve never lived in a town larger than 30000. Don’t what about me. I had to have Sarah Palin come to my state twelve years ago and claim the urban areas here weren’t really Virginia because they vote Democratic. I’m sorry but it’s really tiring. Did you see Chicago shaped Michele Obama claim being from the South Side make her better?

Lemme know when people in cities insist that their individual votes should count more than those of people in small towns.

Thank you.

I’m going to have to drop out of that particular discussion. Lemme know when people in cities stop referring to rural areas as “hicks, flyover country, square states, &c.”

Vermont, Rhode Island, Hawai’i, and other such small liberal states make the same argument about votes.

We could vote to abolish states and just have administrative districts, and I guarantee you every small liberal state would howl just as loudly as every small conservative state.

Plus, most states aren’t “all red” or “all blue” anyway.

The “America is a nation of small towns” mythology needs to be stuffed in a sack, beaten to death with clubs, dragged out of the sack and dismembered, then burned to ash.

America has lots of small towns. Most of America doesn’t live in them. They are not representative of America as a whole, in their values or their political leanings. They are a SLICE of a much larger pie, and it’s about time that we stopped pretending otherwise.

Lemme know when rural areas pull that particular stick out of their collective ass.

I’m sick and tired of the perennial “You think you’re better than us!” inferiority complex that so many rural people evince. Nobody here called them hicks, flyover country, square states, etc. Nobody here suggested rural people deserve any less voice than their numbers merit.

The ‘flyover country’ narrative is pushed by the right trying to sell the ‘liberal elites’ frame. As if ‘liberal elites’ consider all the ‘hicks clinging to their guns and religion’ and call it ‘flyover country.’

They’ve been trying to sell if for a long time.

When they shit on city dwellers, they’re talking about people who they don’t think are real Americans. Same shit they did because the cities were opposed to some of the things that the rural areas championed like Prohibition.

Searched article comments for: flyover country (5,890 matches, in 236 pages)
Searched article comments for: square states (3,923 matches, in 157 pages)

I’ll mostly give you “hicks”

Searched article comments for: hicks (89 matches, in 4 pages)

I’ll go back to more productive commenting now.

I’m gonna let it go but I really do not like Buttigieg talking crap on my home to score cheap votes in Iowa. If he wants to advocate for policies that benefit Iowans, cool and so be it, and he’s going to need the votes of those DC people he used as a cheap attack.

One does wonder how many of those comments including “flyover country” were people complaining about being called “flyover country”, because honestly, that’s mostly where I here that - from people who are JUST CERTAIN we Coastal Elites spend all our time pissing on them.

I’d be very happy if we got to a point where rural people had only the voice that their numbers merit and not a disproportionately larger one.

You wanna live in Wyoming or Montana or Vermont or western Kansas? Cool. Good for you. I’m happy to recognize you as a fellow American and listen to your particular concerns. But in 2020, that shouldn’t automatically entitle you to a voice in the Senate (or the EC) that can be 40 or 50 times louder than that of someone who lives in South LA or South Austin or the South Bronx. Nor should it entitle you (a generic you, not YOU, ‘Mouse) to portray yourself as a “real ‘MURICAN” and look down on those lesser (less white, less straight, less male, less Christian) Americans who live in big urban areas and tend to think and vote in more diverse ways.

That’s all I was trying to say albeit less articulately.

The belief that we’re a nation of rural small towns perverts our politics. It is the most popular excuse for antidemocratic institutions like the Senate and the Electoral College - that “The Cities” shouldn’t dominate. Suggest that maybe people in small towns are no better than anyone else, and you trigger this kind of reaction. It gets real old, real fast, and doesn’t reflect well on the triggered.

I agree, for which reason I have long advocated for abolishing the statute which limits the US House to 438 seats (since you’re not going to abolish the EC, start counting to thirteen conservative and liberal small states and it’s done).

My state would grow by about two house seats, while California would grow by about thirty.

That would significantly shift the EC to more accurately reflect the population of states rather than the states themselves.

See my comment on the next thread. The EC and the composition of the Senate will grow less and less representative of America, and the excessively empowered Right will only become more entrenched and unwilling to give up power. I don’t see it ending without violence. Perhaps I lack imagination.
