when my daughter was a few weeks old, it was December and we were walking around the city for the ‘Holidazzle’ parade. we were watching all of the bright lights and people dressed up as huge Chrismas lights and ornaments….a light snow and not the typical bitter Minnesota cold.
a perfect night to be out.

we went out to enjoy the holiday spirit, and so did seemingly everybody in the city. It was a joyful chaos….people all around with their families, hot cocoa, bells, and whatnot.

Ellie was asleep in her stroller as peaceful as could be amongst the hustle of the outside world.

I kept hearing this tune as a piano lullaby where she’s so innocently sleeping, yet so much happening around her.

It was something that made me reflect on own ‘world’ as an adult; needing to find peace, comfort, and joy when there’s chaos around me.

In this tune.
The role of ‘Ellie’ is played by the Piano
The role of ‘Chaos’ is played by the Drums and String section
The role of ‘Dad’ is played by the guitar

My day to be CL’ed.

re: #187 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

I’ve seen deer in the streets of our suburban town. Far more common is wild turkeys, but deer aren’t unusual to find crossing the streets looking for something to munch on in someone’s yard. In this close, they have no fear; a couple miles north or west, and they wouldn’t be caught in the open for love or money.

East of where I live is parkland (regional parks), and university land with a few labs. So wildlife mostly stays up there, with just a few forays into “settled” areas.

I think that this is behind the paywall, but:

Pro-gun activists using Facebook groups to push anti-quarantine protests

A trio of far-right, pro-gun provocateurs is behind some of the largest Facebook groups calling for anti-quarantine protests around the country, offering the latest illustration that some seemingly organic demonstrations are being engineered by a network of conservative activists.

The Facebook groups target Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, and they appear to be the work of Ben Dorr, the political director of a group called “Minnesota Gun Rights,” and his siblings, Christopher and Aaron. By Sunday, the groups had roughly 200,000 members combined, and they continued to expand quickly, days after President Trump endorsed such protests by suggesting citizens should “liberate” their states.

If it has anything to do with the coronavirus, it’s basically taken as faith that the official Chinese numbers are complete bullshit. They are trying not to become the world’s scapegoat, and at this point, everyone should view it in that lens.

Whether they’re hiding their casualty figures or not, they should not become “the world’s scapegoat.” The jump from bat (?) to human could have happened anywhere and has happened elsewhere in the past. (I don’t know whether I’ve seen that Biden ad or not.)

Oh, no, I agree. The problem is that they’re hiding their numbers because they think “looking good” at handling the pandemic will make everything better. People will hate them (baselessly) regardless. I feel like it would be better that they be honest and helpful, rather than trying to pretend, because now their image problem is compounded by the fact that they are being dishonest.

No matter what context they try to spin it into, the takeaway from that spot is that Biden would have been inside their shirt getting information to protect Americans.

And Trump did the exact opposite of that.

An interesting piece of information about the “peak” as it’s being described for Dallas:

When Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins issued a shelter-in-place order for the county on March 22, he and Huang referenced a data set from covidactnow.org, a project designed by epidemiologists and public health experts across the country.

At the time, the data suggested the state’s hospitals would be overloaded or “peak” on April 28.

That date is no longer valid. As of Thursday, according to COVID Act Now, the state’s hospitals will probably not become overloaded at all.

The ever-changing date of Texas’ projected peak doesn’t necessarily mean that cases will or will not skyrocket at a certain point, but the moving date is a result of social distancing and sheltering-in-place, said Dr. Nirav R. Shah, who serves as an adviser to the project.

“The social distancing you’re doing is changing the number of people being hospitalized,” said Shah, a senior scholar at Stanford University and former commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. “That’s reflected in pushing the date out of when your hospitals get overwhelmed.”

As of Thursday, the estimated date for Dallas County’s hospital overload is May 22. On Tuesday, Jenkins said he predicted the county could reach its peak of cases late this month or in early May.

So the peak moving out is a good thing. If we do things right, it could move out far enough that we don’t overwhelm our hospitals.

Looked out my kitchen window this evening and the ground was moving on the hill. It was a very chubby groundhog, standing up nibbling at various plants. I tried to take a photo through the window and the screen, but I’m sure they aren’t going to turn out.

So I went out to bring in the bird feeders, and surprised a large raccoon, heading in that direction with his eyes on the peanut butter bar. He saw me and skedaddled. Both fellows were sleek and fat.

Putting out the bird feeders in the morning, I almost have to fight my way through the goldfinches, eager to have the thistle seed I’m bringing out. I love living here.

In California at peak (which was projected to have been Friday) we are only using about 10% of hospital bed capacity for COVID patients, and around 25% OF ICU beds.

California acted early.

Though I really wonder if any of this is related to that early report from China that there were 2 varieties of this novel coronavirus: one much more aggressive than the other. If so, it’s possible that California may have had cases from that variety, while New York which has been shown to have been infected from Europe, may have the more serious version. Of course, maybe none of that is relevant — but just my speculation.

I don’t think that theory panned out. The varieties are pretty much the same in their impact.
However, I will note that at least here in the Bay Area meetings were being cancelled the week before we went on “shelter in place” and we did that a few days before the whole state did.

I can’t help but feel there is something else at play. MA issued their stay at home order just a couple days after california, has some of the highest per capita testing in the country, lots of great hospitals and yet states like florida and louisiana that were slow to implement stay at home orders and shutdowns don’t seem to be any worse off and in the case of Florida seem to be doing quite a bit better. Maybe they just haven’t hit their peak yet, but it just seems like something else may be going on.

And the relatively early lockdowns in New York and the northeast kept a lot more people who might have been infected/asymptomatic from traveling to Florida and adding to the spread there.

(Hell, I would likely have ended up at a few Spring Training games in mid-March somewhere in Florida. I assume I wasn’t infected, and I certainly haven’t been symptomatic at all, but in the absence of robust testing, who the hell knows?)

My current presumption is that there is a lack of testing in a lot of places. Presumably under the theory that if unpleasant and uncomfortable facts are ignored, maybe they will just go away. Or perhaps that the rubes won’t be the wiser.

Also that a lot of deaths are not being counted as Covid-19. This has been a problem even in places with a well organized and supported response, such as Germany. Didn’t NY add several thousand deaths previously not connected to Covid-19 to their Covid-19 total deaths just last week?

Of course, maybe none of that is relevant — but just my speculation.

Unknown at this time, but there’s also been some speculation about that in the Italian press, since the north was hit so hard, and the south got off so (comparatively) lightly. Of course, the south had a bit more warning than the north, but so did California compared to New York. However, I’m not seeing anything about different strains —in fact, they’re saying that it’s not mutating hardly at all.

Texas is another one. I think they still haven’t fully shut down or have lot’s of exceptions and they are doing even better than California just by the numbers.

Smaller population, more spread out than California, and we lag behind the coasts.

A reggaeton in Spanglish by an Italian goth comic band about Norway. A few legs are being pulled here. :)

(Edit: I need to learn to spell reggaeton.)

re: #52 danarchy

I can’t help but feel there is something else at play. MA issued their stay at home order just a couple days after california, has some of the highest per capita testing in the country, lots of great hospitals and yet states like florida and louisiana that were slow to implement stay at home orders and shutdowns don’t seem to be any worse off and in the case of Florida seem to be doing quite a bit better. Maybe they just haven’t hit their peak yet, but it just seems like something else may be going on.

I wonder if it’s not the just bitch-goddess luck. As in it happens that several more infected people went to place “a,” or some super-spreaders. We’ll be analyzing this for a long time before we really know what hit us.

I wouldn’t trust Modi to report things truthfully.

I wouldn’t trust that he’d be able to report accurately, even if he wanted to. India, you know…

“Spread out” may be the key factor, since it appears that person to person droplet transmission is the principal means of infection.
