“Absentee ballots” can also be dropped off at drop boxes, so it is unclear how absentee ballots solve the problem of drop boxes. Especially since the president has expressed doubt that the mail will get the ballot there on time, either. How does one cast an absentee ballot?

May rusty farm implements make every Republican back side hurt forever. In a fun way, of course.
Good Afternoon Lizards. I hope all of you are doing and feeling well. I’ve been a bit sidelined from hurting my stupid knees working outside for hours standing on bricks and concrete. We’re all starting to feel the mental health strains of being on lockdown since March. Hanging in there, but the isolation is a bit much. My son had a couple of(socially distanced and outside only) friends over to swim yesterday and Cleo had a blast playing in the pool with everyone. It was the first time I have seen my kid smile in awhile. We’ve also been working on album cover jigsaw puzzles. So far we have Metallica’s Master of Puppets, Iron Maiden’s Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and right now we’re doing Slayer’s Reign in Blood. My husband also bought me 4 versions of Funko Pop Eddies and a Kerry King Funko. My belated anniversary gift, lol. I’m ordering some different puzzles too, puppies and other stuff. It’s been therapeutic, if anyone needs an outlet.
My son got notice that Stein Mart is going out of business so he has no job to return to. So now we have to find him some health insurance. Sigh. He wants to get back to work, we just don’t know where or when. I am looking at job training in skilled trades, maybe to see if we can find money for schooling or something. Warehouse work doesn’t pay enough for him to ever be on his own financially. I’m sad for him, and it’s also made his anxiety worse. I’m hoping that creating a plan to follow will help him.
I hope you all are finding a way through this madness. I’m fighting wicked anxiety and depression, I hate all the uncertainty of the future and not being able to survive financially, let alone physically. Feel free to share with me the things that are helping you cope as the world unravels. I do know this, if I have to take my last breath voting for Joe and Kamala, then I fucking will. Everything else pales in comparison right now.
Damn. This president* is one of the most loathsome human beings who ever existed. https://t.co/LGNM5ChujI

According to the NBC News/WSJ poll, 61 percent of all voters think America’s response to the coronavirus has been unsuccessful. That includes 84 percent of Dem respondents, 58 percent of independents, but just 37 percent of Republicans.
Because it hasn’t affected them personally.

I haven’t watched Last Week Tonight, but there’s a hundred reasons why our jury system sucks… most people can’t afford to take multiple days off work (most employers don’t pay for days off on jury duty; and what the court provides is shit). there’s a culture of “how can I get out of jury duty” that pervades our society; in other words: it’s not seen as a civic duty and a matter of patriotism, it’s a chore that nobody wants to bother with. then there’s how jury duty actually plays out for a lot of people - ie, they go to the courthouse, sit in the jury room all day and don’t even get called to go to the courtroom (usually because there is a last minute settlement). and if you do get into the courtroom, the actual voir dire process is (speaking as a former litigator) litigators at their worst.
My general comments re polling for years: polls have become increasingly unreliable. You cannot reach most people: they don’t have landlines or they don’t answer calls from unfamiliar numbers, they don’t answer their door, they throw out mail. Take every poll with a grain of salt; wait, no, take every poll with a pound of salt.
In this year, especially, it’s also unclear who can or will be voting; millions may be evicted, and in some states, that can happen sooner than later. Homeless people generally don’t have valid voting registration. Under DeJoy, the USPS will be deliberately sabotaging voting, possibly targeting mail from area codes that are more Democratic. There is no villainy that this administration and the GOP are incapable of committing.
And re the whole notion of mail-in ballot fraud: Remember that is exactly the crime of North Carolina Republican campaign for House candidate Mark Harris. Remember: any accusation that Trump flings against an opponent represents a crime that he or an ally has or is planning on committing.

For your son, try finding a local contractor that has an apprenticeship program for electrical or any other sort of trade. Heavy/Highway contractors in your area may also have an operator apprentice program as well. It gets him in the door.
Best of luck to you as well.

The first night selection of speakers is sure to raise all kinds of questions about Trump’s failed covid19 response. Whitmer and Cuomo in particular are both well positioned to deal with this. Cuomo’s pressers were the ones Trump should have been giving since day 1 of the pandemic. Cuomo filled the vacuum left by Trump’s incompetence, dumbfuckery, and outright extortion of states dealing with a pandemic without federal backup.
Then we roll into the section were GOPers are lining up to show support of Biden/Harris. That’s all well and good - big tent. Will it sway votes? I don’t know. But from that end of the spectrum, we get Bernie and the progressives right behind that.
The Keynote tonight is by First Lady Michelle Obama.
It will be interesting to see how all this plays out without the audience participation we usually see at a convention - and it certainly means that ratfuckers and insurgent attempts to push for a specific candidate who failed to win in the primaries is all but impossible since they can’t shout down a speaker or push a particular issue without the consent of the organizers.

The polling was actually very accurate nationally in 2016 and overall in 2018. State polls were off because what noone saw coming was the appeal Trump had to whites without a college degree; a lot of polls are weighting for education now. The votes cast are likely to be within a couple of points of the polls. However, mail in ballots get rejected at a higher rate than in person ballots, and of course the sabotage of the USPS could cause a lot of mail in ballots to not be delivered to voters and to not be returned in time to be counted.
I don’t expect it to work on many Republicans, but voters do like the optics of bipartisanship. https://t.co/PnfPO7tTN7

I know of quite a few people who liked Kasich last time. I don’t like him at all but he’s popular in Ohio sand it’s game over for Trump if he loses Ohio. I’m okay with showcasing the Republicans for Biden. It’s not as if we’re adopting their views into the platform.

Republicans are not likely to be tuning in to this first night anyway so am not sure who will be persuaded.
It’s difficult when speakers have no audience to roar their approval. That’s one interesting feature of the pandemic Bill Maher show: he has a “canned audience” to laugh during his monologue — he shows clips of audiences from other venues, from decades in the past, as “fake” reactions to his jokes.
One point I certainly made to my sister last night: at least Bernie Stans have no way to interfere with the presentations. Of course, that does mean everything may appear stilted with no hint of spontaneity.
Have to admit I break out in laughter every time I see right wing Twitter crowing about Trump’s boat parades. You can’t write this kind of comedy.

I’ve served on a couple of juries. On the one hand, I’m an ex-lawyer. On the other hand, my evil too big to fail employer is extremely reliable in letting people off from work and paying us. So it’s a sure bet that if I’m called for jury duty, short of the case involving a relative or my employer. I’m ending up on that jury.
The case in federal court was SO DULL. All of the jurors knew how many lights were on the courtroom ceiling (that’d be 47).
re: #28 Charles Johnson
There was one of these idiotic events up at Lake Hopatcong in NJ over the weekend.
A couple hundred boaters.
This is what they’re crowing about? Seriously? What better way to connect with folks who are unemployed or underemployed thanks to Trump’s idiotic covid19 response than to get them onto boats to show their support for Trump. At least they’re “socially distant”.
Meanwhile, out in SD, Sturgis continues with well over 250,000 people in the region, and you know that they’ll be bringing the covid19 with them or spreading it nationwide as a result of this nonsense. Harley Davidson didn’t participate this year because they didn’t want to expose their employees to this madness. Crowds do seem sparser, but there’s a lot of stuff going on at state parks outside town. SD Governor refused to stop the event.

There’s a whole science to polling that is so far beyond what most people realize. We are a long way from “let’s call 700 random phone numbers and see what people say.” As a result, polls are actually pretty damn reliable.
With respect to Trump trying to screw the electorate… I remain optimistic that his fuckery will do what it always does and blow up in his face. I also remain fairly optimistic that voters are going to reject him in a rather sweeping way. In other words: run up the score.

I’ll look at that thanks. We tried with a welding school just after high school and it was expensive plus they had no grants or loans except some private deal they had with a bank. He was totally intimidated too. But calling the unions and asking what they do to get young people into the trades is a good idea. I keep trying to explain to him that if he could learn welding, electrical or plumbing, he could make as much money as some doctors do, without the years of school or debt. Wish me luck, lol. This last job was a big deal for him because he got it all by himself, no community or government program or family helping. He was doing ok too, comfortable with the place and people. Which is huge for someone with Asperger’s.
The idea that somewhere out there is a citizen who needs John Kasich’s “permission” to vote against a guy advising us to drink bleach and eat poison to fight a global pandemic makes me sad to be an American.

There’s already speculation about who Newsom would appoint if Harris becomes VP. Some talk of an old guard caretaker (like Jerry Brown) to serve out the last two years and then have an open seat in 2022 (when Harris’ term was set to expire anyway). Lot of talk about a Latino/a appointee as well.
I’m not too big a fan of the Jerry Brown idea, only because DiFi is still in office for another 4 years. Someone younger would be a better choice just by default.

Becerra also has the benefit of being from Southern California. We have some weird north/south and coastal/inland splits in our politics. The coastal/inland tends to be the traditional R/D divide with Democrats mostly winning in coastal counties/cities and Republicans in inland areas. The north/south divide tends to be a Bay Area vs LA thing and how differently the major population centers developed in those areas.
re: #31 mmmirele
I’ve served on a couple of juries.
I was on a jury a couple of years ago at the Edinburgh High Court which deals with serious cases, not something the magistrate’s court would normally dispense with.
The pool of jurors had to turn up to the courthouse on the Monday, absent a really good excuse in writing. They got a second chance to try and talk their way out of it at the courthouse (I didn’t try for various reasons). The survivors got corralled then taken out in groups of about thirty or so to a courtroom where our names were drawn out of an honest-to-goodness goldfish bowl. I was number 11 of a jury of fifteen, the other pool members who weren’t selected were discharged. We were seated in the jury box, the judge went through some rules, we got to see the writ of libels (the charges) against the defendant and the prosecution started laying out its case by 11 o’clock that day. I won’t go into details about the case but just sum it up with one word — “families”. We did get to pass down the classic Scottish legal verdict of Not Proven on a few of the libels which was a win. The accused, an absolute bastard and despicable excuse for a human being (IMO) walked out of the courtroom a free man.
What you Yanks put yourself through in the name of justice is a wonder and an amusement to me.

The best thing about this election cycle is that it’s showing how many qualified women the Democratic Party has in its midst, working hard for their constituents. They have the power to use contempt of Congress which is outwith the DoJ’s authority
There is no point having the power of subpoena if you aren’t going to enforce it and the other side knows you won’t enforce it— Mark Gray (@rich29uk) August 17, 2020
I still have questions about this: what about Congress’s power of holding someone in ‘inherent contempt’ still doesn’t require some kind of good faith cooperation of some manner? I mean…I keep hearing about them sending the Sergeant-At-Arms to arrest the person being held in contempt….but who else actually helps execute that order? What if the Executive continues to stonewall, obstruct, and otherwise protect whoever is being held in contempt? Where does the court come in, and what if the court ends up dragging things out and/or obstructing themselves?
Again, just saying ‘use the power of inherent contempt’ seems like shorthand for ‘wave a fucking magic wand you assholes’.

Just the thought of Newsom appointing Dolores Huerta to replace Kamala…

re: #64 Citizen K
From what I’ve read about it, it’s purely the prerogative of the House. Needs no input from Trump, the Senate or anyone.
Reading Ted Lieu’s Twitter feed the past few days, it would require a rule change in the House. I really want that rule change to happen, because until one of these Trump mooks gets put into slam none of them is going to cooperate with anything.

Trump isn’t crazed; he isn’t senile. Extremely local news items (2):
a) Concerning the car key I lost in the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. I called the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Westminster (Denver suburb), Colorado to ask how to get it replaced, and can I please avoid a four-hundred mile round trip for a key?
No dice. Making a factory key requires filling out two forms (one for Mercedes, one for Colorado) stating I am the owner of my car and presenting both my driver’s license and registration in person as proof. Additionally, the key has to be programmed to the car’s computer, so the car has to be at the dealership to do that.
They said I could scan the forms after being filled in (LOL no scanners in any direction for scores of miles here). Instead I had to print out the forms and put them in the mail to the Mercedes dealer.
It takes three days to make a Smart key, according to the dealership. They will call me when they get my forms (and ask for payment then), and again when they are ready for us to make an appointment with the dealership to program the replacement. (As such I ordered two replacements, so we will have three keys.) We’ll probably have to stay overnight in Denver for this.
b) I ordered a replacement telephone directory (mine is from 2013). The telephone company was apologetic about not sending me a directory for seven years, so they will get a new one to me in the mail right away. Bonus, it’s the brand-new 2020 directory which just came out a couple weeks ago for the Nebraska Panhandle and southeast Wyoming.

She didn’t hurry she never does so I pick up a real estate magazine and find out the 3 bedroom place for sale that’s line of sight to the pump cost $1.4 M

7) My immigrant parents thought it was a good idea to take the 7 year old me to San Francisco in July 1969 during the height of the Summer of Love and I guess it had an impact, but even this future hippie thought it was too intense for an 7 year old to process without context

An interesting sight on our drive back from Valentine was the “yard sign war.” In Valentine, there were bunches of people with Trump flags run up the same pole as an American flag (more of that flag code violating patriotism that seems to define conservative voters).
In the rural area from Valentine to my home was a sea of yard signs or large banner signs with “Rural Nebraskans for Biden/Harris 2020.”
Considering the uber-conservative House district I live in, those signs were hope that not everyone here is a GOPbot.

You’re right — you didn’t — I just wanted to cover both bases, because a frequent charge is that Trump is senile. I think his behavior is purely tied to his malignant narcissism. OTOH, one can argue that his party’s attack against Biden as senile is a reflection of Trump’s deteriorating mental condition. I don’t think his mental condition has changed a bit since he came down the escalator but then there remains no explanation for the mysterious visit to Walter Reed last year.

There’s plenty of other evidence that Trump is using the USPS in a vote suppression effort, outside of his actually bragging that he’s doing exactly that.
We can point to any of the following:
1. Removal/reassignment of postmasters by Trump appointee Louis DeJoy
2. Across-the-board workday reductions for carriers, including ending all overtime.
3. Targeted removal of high-speed sorting machines from urban centers.

Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff opened up for students to move into dorms there. They changed the rules so that there will be only one student per dorm room, noting they are going to lose a lot of money. Classes there will be in-person, in keeping with our genocidal governor’s directives.
Hint: Housing students one-to-a-room is not going to prevent disease spread, particularly in the hardest-hit county in the Panhandle.

How fucked is Iowa? How much does McConnell care about how fucked Iowa is? This seems like maybe for the moment Nancy has some leverage; she won’t consider Iowa disaster funds until/unless McConnell negotiates in good faith for a relief bill, and puts it up for a vote.
I’m not sure what’s going on in Iowa, but my guess is McConnell doesn’t really give a fuck. The extent to which he might give a fuck is solely to the extent that it could cost Ernest her seat and thus cost McConnell power in the Senate. Unless he already thinks he’s going to lose the Senate, then he gives zero fucks about Iowa or any other state in the Union for that matter.

Here’s the thing… if we want to have a functioning democracy, particularly with the way our system is designed, we need politicians who can agree to work on things where there are agreements and not be complete assholes when there are disagreements. Some times that will mean engaging in the dreaded compromise. Some times it will mean getting a little less than everything you wanted, but it is still better than getting nothing (or worse, seeing things shift in the other direction because of the aforementioned assholishness).
Is that possible with the current incarnation of the GOP? Probably not, because they’ve bought into being assholes as a winning strategy. But at some point, it’s going to be necessary.

i agree 100%
i was speaking strictly in the context of the election

in more general terms again, you are right
the R’s have turned politics, the nature of which was compromise to find a common way forward, into something else.
not even a conflict of interests, but a tribal, degenerative, brutal struggle for office power in which they, with righteous indignation believe that all dems, and only dems, do in fact behave despicably all the time.
i have no idea how to get back to politics being a clash of value systems, each of which is in some way valid, where it’s a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world differently.
Franklin thought the only hope for democracy was if people respected each other enough to compromise. it requires two sets of honest brokers.
re: #64 Citizen K
Nope, doesn’t require good faith.
Interestingly, the last time an arrest and jailing occurred with Congressional power of inherent contempt was another Republican Postmaster under Herbert Hoover, making a deal with airlines to fix the costs and non-competition between them to deliver air mail.
William P. MacCracken had been the Department of Commerce Bureau of Aeronautics head, but was appointed Postmaster General by Herbert Hoover. He was sentenced to ten days in jail after a Senate trial. He appealed to the Supreme Court, which upheld the conviction.
Since 1975, around eighteen have been held in Contempt of Congress under the rules of inherent contempt; most complied when the threat of jail (or corporate destruction in the case of Backpage dot com) was levied.
Rita Lavelle (Reagan EPA official) was convicted of lying to Congress by the House Energy and Transportation Committee and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment, 5 years probation, and $10,000 fine for lying to Congress.
As shown by the recent Supreme Court case regarding Native American treaties, just because a law has not been used or a right exercised does not mean that law or right no longer exists.

I don’t know the answer either. All of your points are especially true as long as one side believes in a culture war and believes they are losing (which has been the social conservative world view for two generations at this point).

It’s been more than two generations. (See the Klan, the Civil War, &c).
Edmund Burke outlined conservatism as rule by those who are deserving over those who are not. France’s aristocracy in his view failed because they had poor aristocrats. Burke himself was opposed to democracy, and proposed capitalism could be used to subvert its politicians.
A so-called culture war is just one tool to convince people that “other people” are a threat to their way-of-life, whether it’s the Catholic Church’s never-ending war on contraception, Jim Crow, libertarian arguments that taxes are theft at the point of a gun, &c.
Gosh, who was knocking on my door?
A Census worker asking if I knew anything about the neighbors in my apartment complex.
Found out I was only 1 of the 4 respondents to the Census. 47 apartments did not answer and several have refused to cooperate because they hear on Spanish radio that Trump is using the Census to target people for deportation.

I good friend teaches at St. Louis University and starts in-person teaching tomorrow. She talked about the challenge of organizing her courses to be in-person but able to switch to remote at any time. I told her that I give her college two weeks before they go all remote. Perhaps, I should revise my prediction.
My brother the professor gives the NY SUNY system three weeks of in-person classes before they close back up and go remote due to outbreak(s).
They issued a bunch of rules regarding how students quarantine coming onto campus and thus will be sort of isolated. However, as he pointed out to me, these don’t properly cover commuter students, students with jobs out in the community, and the fact that students *are* going to socialize and do things out in the local community. So the virus is going to get into the dorms and classrooms inevitably and probably fairly quickly.
Local news: Scottsbluff man accused of setting up bogus GoFundMe accounts on behalf of three young children who’s parent was killed in an auto accident last year, then spending all the money on himself.

The standard talking point “justification” being trotted out now by the FB conservative set* is that Biden has Alzheimer’s and that Harris slept her way into power. I assume the Harris stuff will get more strident in tone as we get closer to the election and after she castrates Pence in October.
“Justification” in quotes since I don’t believe there are *any* circumstances that would get them as individuals to vote for Biden and/or Democrats in general. They use Democrat/liberal interchangeably and as an insult.
* - Some who admit to disliking Trump, thinking he’s a asshole, etc. BUT he leads to more conservative judges, so anything he does can be tolerated. And I guess they’re fine with all the other policy decisions, racist rhetoric by GOP other than Trump, etc. etc. etc. as well.

Yay, I have a documented allergy to ragweed (with an allergy test done by the Navy).
Ragweed pollen season returns to Nebraska; symptoms can mirror those of COVID-19 (Omaha World-Herald)
Dr. Linda Ford, a Bellevue allergist who tracks pollen counts, said ragweed pollen usually shows up in the first few days of August.
“Then it takes a few days to get up to a high enough pollen count to be clinically significant to those who are allergic to it, and it has made it to that count,” said Ford, who operates the Asthma & Allergy Center in Bellevue.
Ragweed pollen counts usually reach their peak around Labor Day. Symptoms include sneezing; itchy eyes, nose, ears and throat; watery eyes; a runny nose; and congestion.
People can take steps to minimize the misery brought on by the airborne irritant: Keep windows and doors closed, don’t hang laundry outside to dry and shower after spending time outdoors. The masks people wear to help stop the spread of COVID-19 also help allergy sufferers, Ford said.
The one difference between Covid-19 and ragweed pollen allergies is fever associated with Covid-19.
Masks for Covid-19 will effectively eliminate breathing in ragweed pollen.

As someone with springtime allergies (oak pollen is my kryptonite), it was delightful waking up some mornings to the debate over whether the trouble breathing was allergy related or the beginnings of the ‘rona. Good times.
re: #191 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
Yea. I like the fall, but almost look forward to the first hard frost since my worst allergy (of the many that were found via testing) is ragweed by far.
I would say that my allergies have eased off a bit as I got older. Living *in* a city helped a bit since I think I got less exposure to some things like ragweed. And I was careful when renting to find places that were drier or had good ventilation due to mold allergies.

Biden wins the Electoral College with over 350 votes.
Trump announces he’s running again in 2024 like almost immediately.
He spends the next two years bitching about everything Biden does. But Biden does start to turn stuff around.
After the mid-terms Biden announces that he won’t seek re-election.
Harris announces she’s running in 2024. We end up with a Harris vs Trump campaign in 2024 with a third party Huntsman/Kaisch ticket just begging people to not vote for Trump. Trump manages to come in third in the electoral college.
ETA: also, Madam President Harris.
Trump would do it just to keep those sweet campaign contributions coming.
Trump will set up a campaign for 2024 so he can get tax free money to pay his legal expenses, BUT…
He’s going to be spending a lot of time defending himself. Even if there are no legal cases, there will be civil lawsuits in state and fed courts. Not going to have a lot of time to run for office. If he insists are bringing down more republicans, amen.
We also may have a functioning FEC that can look into his shenanigans.

Go Joe

I think the two obvious ways this plays out, assuming he loses:
1. he tries to run again in 2024 because of the grift
2. he ends up living in a dacha just outside of Moscow “because of the great business deal he has in Moscow that he needs to oversee directly”

With the loser-stink all over him, Putin will dump Trump in a heartbeat. I doubt Vlad is any more loyal than Trump. Trump was useful for awhile, but Putin’s cultivated other willing GOPers as backup.

Again, wouldn’t surprise me. But I do think if he did try to run (or one of the children of the corn tried to), you’d probably see a real movement to create a third party. Granted, the break up of the GOP has been allegedly coming in every cycle since I was in high school and Ross Perot was going to be the end of the GOP as we know it…

Yeah after 2008, I’m not buying the GOP’s demise. On another note, it was interesting to read about Lincoln’s role in the formation of the GOP. I got Carl Sandberg’s Lincoln bio on Audible. Fascinating stuff. Really appreciate that Lincoln opposed the Know Nothings.
By the way is GOHMERT PYLE still missing in action?
Oh and WILBUR ROSS, too?
I do think we’re seeing political realignment appear before our eyes though.

The Never Trump types, I think, are smart enough to know that if they are going to build a third party (assuming the GOP cannot be reformed because Trump still sits on the throne) they’ll have to start in the state legislatures and the House. Which means they’d have to gear up for 2022.

Yeah it’s gonna be interesting. I’m expecting a power struggle for the GOP majority leadership in the House. Expecting McCarthy to get the bump.

It would be interesting to see Steve Schmidt, Stuart Stevens, Rick Wilson and George Conway form a new Bull Moose Party.
Iowa, in the meantime, has been caught red-handed with a poorly constructed pandemic reporting system. Still to be determined: If the error is due to malice or stupidity.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state agency says it is working to fix a data error on Iowa’s coronavirus website that lowers the number of new confirmed cases and therefore downplays the severity of the current outbreak, just as schools are deciding whether to reopen.
…
The numbers are skewed because some people tested negative earlier but recently tested positive. Iowa’s system has been recording their new positive results as having happened when their original negative results were reported.
…
An Iowa Department of Public Health official confirmed the glitch in an email to Jones Friday. He said a system-generated date when test results are reported to the state stays the same when an individual later tests positive.

That means there is NO comprehensive tally of COVID-19 cases or outbreaks in schools.

Narrator: The GOP cannot be reformed.
Me: Nor should it. It needs to die.

There’s also the part where Trump grifts from a new campaign hours after the election is over. He filed his papers the next day after his inauguration for the same reason.
re: #238 jaunte

The most terrifying part of all of this is that if the numbers start to look REALLY bad for Trump, that he might actually attempt an un-elected power grab. For example, his ramped-up interest in Presidential Emergency Action Documents (PEADs).
Rewriting the limits of presidential powers
Under the National Emergencies Act of 1976 alone, the president can declare a national emergency just by signing a proclamation.
Cole said, “We’ve got a president who, in his first week in office, essentially declared an emergency to ban Muslims from coming into the country. More recently, [he] declared a widely understood to be a fake emergency in order to build a border wall when Congress told him they would not give him the funds to create a border wall.
“And most recently, [he] has declared that he may need to delay the election, which would be an emergency authority that doesn’t even exist. So, I think you have to be very concerned.”
Which brings us back to those mysterious Presidential Emergency Action Documents:
John Yoo is a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley. While serving at the Justice Department after 9/11, Yoo drafted the memo that justified the use of “enhanced interrogation” of terrorism suspects.
Yoo was asked by Koppel, “Just to reassure our viewers a little bit, John, you’ve seen these PEADs?”
“I am not allowed to say whether I have or not,” he laughed.
“Let me put it this way: You were at the Justice Department. Presumably the Justice Department would’ve had to deal with these PEADs if a president wanted to implement one?”
“Yes, that’s fair to say,” Yoo replied. “The Justice Department and the office I worked in would review the legality of the PEADs because they would draw on presidential powers and Congressional powers delegated to them.”
Just a couple of weeks ago, Yoo was at the White House discussing executive power with President Trump.
“‘Cause you never know what the emergency is gonna be,” said Yoo. “So, these PEADs and similar contingency planning documents, when we look back historically at them, sometimes they seem comic.”

I mean I’m excited for Biden but I’m not going to be doing the crazy shit that the Trumpers do to show their enthusiasm. My vote counts just as much as theirs and my way is probably more likely to gain voters. Biden isn’t running a cult of personality campaign and I am thankful for that everyday.

They could start in California. The GOP is basically a third party behind Democrats and Independents. And our open primary/top two system gives them the chance to compete in the general in some races.
Thank goodness we don’t have cartoonists like Ben Garrison or hacks like Jon McNaughton drawing Biden. Biden is who he is to us. A real person. A person with an imperfect record but with the qualities that we want in a President and that this presidency has so lacked.

The Alliance Party is an American political party that was formed in 2018 via the merger of the American Moderates Party, the American Party of South Carolina, and the Modern Whig Party. The Modern Whig Party had itself been a merger of the American Centrist Party, the American Moderate Party of California, the Center Party, the National Centrist Party, the Veterans Party, and the USA Party. In 2019, they also folded in the American Alliance Party and the Independence Party of Minnesota. 2020 brought in the Independent Party of Connecticut, and reportedly the Reform Party of Florida.
The Modern Whig Party is no more. I do have one of their now-rare tee-shirts and a coffee mug.
The Alliance party held their nominating convention on-line on 25 April, nominating Rocky de la Fuente for President and Darcy Richardson for Vice-President. It is safe to say they are still an unserious group.
Darcy Richardson was the Reform Party candidate for Florida governor in 2018. In 2012, he ran as a Democrat against Barack Obama in five states.

(I’m not the person you’re referring too, but in places where the Republican primary is the real contest, it makes perfect sense. With a majority of rabid GOP voters who will only vote for someone with an R next to their name, a moderate Republican who would be willing to compromise, might be nominateable if enough Democrats vote in the Republican primary. The Republicans started playing hardball, _after_ Newt Gingrich, and went into overdrive after the Tea Party’ing wing came into picture. (And in fact, didn’t Thaddeus Cochran win the MS Senate race a few years back after many Democrats voted in the primary for him, instead of an crazier nutjob.)
