Mickey Guyton: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 25,119

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Ann Powers | November 9. 2020
Mickey Guyton recorded her three-song Tiny Desk (home) concert in a warm-hued corner of a friend’s studio near her Los Angeles home. Her makeshift desk holds the book that inspired its title, alongside a pair of blue baby booties: Guyton will soon give birth to her first child. Albums by Whitney Houston and Patsy Cline — Guyton’s guardian angels — rest on the window ledge. The hands of keyboardist Lynette Williams, who also plays in Childish Gambino’s band, are the first sight you see as the music starts. This is country: soulful keyboards, the Afro-Caribbean instruments of percussionist Paul Allen, Jon Sosin’s acoustic guitar. Guyton raises the rafters and distills emotion with impeccable clarity. Her high notes thrill, her nuance in storytelling captivates. A star for our times claims her place.

America is living through a moment of change, and it’s difficult to imagine a better artist to greet it than Guyton. The Texas native has long been a favorite of country music connoisseurs for her lucid songwriting style and the dazzling dynamic range and power of her voice. And yet, it took Guyton nearly a decade to be fully embraced within the country world she loves. This year is her year. In February, as protests against sexism intensified in the country world, she debuted “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” and it caused an instant sensation. In June, after the killing of George Floyd, Guyton released “Black Like Me,” which tells her own story in a way that gently but resolutely calls for change. Suddenly Guyton was an emblem. What matters most is that she is a great singer and writer redefining country music’s sound, as well as its image. That’s what she makes undeniably clear here.

Mr. Barr’s authorization prompted the Justice Department official who oversees investigations of voter fraud, Richard Pilger, to step down from the post within hours, according to an email Mr. Pilger sent to colleagues…. Mr. Pilger, a career prosecutor in the department’s Public Integrity Section who oversaw voting fraud-related investigations, told colleagues he would move to a nonsupervisory role working on corruption prosecutions. “Having familiarized myself with the new policy and its ramifications … I must regretfully resign from my role as director of the Election Crimes Branch,” he wrote. A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Mr. Pilger’s message.

Last year my 15yo ordered over 100 Cds from our local library’s interlibrary loan system. He got lots of jazz and some rock, but he got probably almost every Dylan recording. My wife lets him play his iPhone in the car; I often don’t. I love Bob in limited amounts, but my son is a crazy fan.

7 p.m.: Biden holds lead as Maricopa County updates results
President-elect Joe Biden maintained his lead over President Donald Trump in Arizona on Monday evening as Maricopa County posted more results. Before the latest release of ballots, Biden led the president by 14,886 votes overall in the state. Now, he leads by 14,746.

Trump picked up 140 votes over Biden in Maricopa County out of about 6,250 additional votes counted.

The state estimates Arizona’s counties have about 61,500 ballots left to verify and count, and many of those are provisional ballots that may or may not ultimately be verified.

Biden’s lead has dropped to just under 15,000 votes, but I’m not sure how many remain to be counted. Yesterday I read there were under 40,000 remaining, so a day later that has to have dropped.
So, I’m guessing we’re at the mathematically possible, statistically extremely unlikely point. But yeah, I’d like it to be over too.

Noting that over half of all coups actually fail,

10 things you need to know to stop a coup (goes to Waging Nonviolence)

One reason to use the language of a coup is that people know it’s wrong and a violation of Democratic norms — even if they’re not familiar with the exact definition of a coup.

We have to be ready to declare loudly and strongly: This is a coup.

Language like “election tampering” or “voter suppression” signal deterioration of the democratic process. But if we get ourselves into a coup situation — like where Trump just won’t go — we need to help people help our country move into a psychic break.

We know it’s a coup if the government:

Stops counting votes;
Declares someone a winner who didn’t get the most votes; or
Allows someone to stay in power who didn’t win the election.

These are sensible red lines that people can grasp right away (and that the majority of Americans continue to believe in).

People who do power grabs always claim they’re doing it to save democracy or claim they know the “real” election results. So this doesn’t have to look like a military coup with one leader ordering the opposition to be arrested.

If any of those three principles are violated, we have to declare loudly and strongly: This is a coup.

“Their cut” is 100%. Kristi Noem grifting all the money from Donald Trump should be told to Donald Trump.

As for the Lincoln Project having no effect, I seem to recall their advert on Brad Parscale getting really rich grifting off Donald Trump followed by Donald Trump firing him.

Perhaps a head’s up to their little pirate ship of an operation about Gov. Noem would be helpful as well.

It’s a Schrodinger’s rapist scenario applied to politics. “Let Trump file all his shitty lawsuits and get his base riled up. If it all goes tits-up in the end, we’ll just say we were catering to his delusions. If something sticks, we get our GOP dictatorship 30 years ahead of schedule.”

This is why Biden has to find a way to pursue the idea of healing the country in a way that places these shitbirds beyond the pale.

As long as they are part of the DOJ, they cannot speak publicly about it. The more prosecutors resign, the more it cripples Barr’s attempt at a coup, and they can speak out in public (such as Preet Baraha has).

Six counties are categorized as severe risk: Scotts Bluff (3.125, on a scale of 3-4), Morrill (3.125), Kimball (3), Dawes (3) and Box Butte. The remaining seven of the 12 counties covered by the Panhandle are in high-risk levels: Sheridan (2.875 on a scale of 2 to 2.99), Garden (2.75), Cheyenne (2.75) Deuel (2.625), Sioux (2.625) Banner (2.3125). On the community level, communities from Morrill to Bridgeport are considered severe risk, almost as if cases are following Highway 26: Morrill, Mitchell, Scottsbluff, Gering, Minatare, Bayard and Bridgeport. Chadron and Kimball are also listed as on the community level as severe risk.

We are getting ready for triage.

Overall, the Panhandle has a 16.6% cumulative positivity rate. Last week, the Panhandle had a 60.9% positivity rate. The weekly positivity rate has climbed steadily since the beginning of October, when it was 13.3%.

“The hospitals are being stressed in the Panhandle right now, as well as across the state,” Panhandle Public Health Director Kim Engel said.

She said plans are made on the local, regional and state level for overseeing hospital capacity and ensuring capabilities to handle patients. All of those plans have been submitted and reviewed by state officials.

Panhandle moves into the ‘severe’ risk level as cases surge (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Meanwhile, Gov. Ricketts is pleading with people to follow guidelines, but will not issue orders with enforcement capacity.

Things are moving so fast—did we already know this?

The White House removed the official in charge of the federal program that produces the U.S. government’s definitive reports on climate change, three people familiar with the situation said…

Removing Kuperberg could allow the White House to insert someone whose climate science views more closely align with Trump’s. That may be exactly what’s about to happen, according to Myron Ebell, a climate change contrarian at the Competitive Enterprise Institute who is close to the administration.

Ebell said in an interview that the job will most likely go to David Legates, a meteorologist from the University of Delaware who was recently appointed to be the deputy assistant secretary of Commerce for environmental observation and prediction at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). While that is a senior position at NOAA reporting directly to the acting administrator, Legates does not have a role in the climate assessment process while serving in that capacity…

Kuperberg’s removal “seems quite consistent with decisions at NOAA and elsewhere,” said Kathy Jacobs, who is director of the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions at the University of Arizona and ran the Third National Climate Assessment. “[It’s] a last-minute attempt to remove people who may not be perceived as supporting the president’s agenda.”

For those following Arizona’s count.

arizona.vote

61,577 as on now need to be counted. Nearly half are in Maricopa county (29,592)
(County is running 50.4% for Biden and 48.1% for Cheeto Jesus (WP) so far.
Call it even.

Pima has the second highest number to count - 18,700
County is running 58.9% to 39.4% in favor of Biden
Call it 3,000 for Biden

Cochise has the third with only 3319 to be counted
County is running 39.9% to Biden and 58.2% to FFVCS.
+575 to Dumpy

This leaves 10k for the rest of the state with a slight advantage to the Orange Menace but no more that a 65/35 split if the numbers hold.
+3000 to the Carnival Barker

So to be “kind” give Angry Creamsicle an extra generous 1,000 votes..

Biden would win the state with just under 14k.

(your mileage may vary)

If I might suggest one piece of language change that everybody should adapt on social media:

This is a coup by key Republican figures, not Donald Trump.

They’re not his goons, as funny as it is to use that parlance (I do). Most of the participants are ratfuckers with their own agendas that extend far beyond Donald J Trump, and their actions and inactions need to be evaluated in those terms.

Indeed, Trump and his loyal coterie are the least threatening aspect of this. The people with their own discretionary powers that are supposed to serve the people, or act as a check on the president’s power, are trying to keep the executive in the hands of their allies.

Trump could not make a serious run at staging a coup without Repub support, and Repubs wouldn’t be engaging in a naked attempt to subvert our democratic institutions if Trump announced tomorrow that he was conceding and recognizing Biden’s victory. And yes, this is an entirely one-sided situation. If Pelosi came out tomorrow and announced that Dem lawyers would be contesting “illegal votes” in races where the Dem candidate had been shown as ahead before Election Night and she would not seat any Repub representatives until those races were investigated to her satisfaction, the entire D.C. establishment would be in an uproar. Yet it would be no less ridiculous and actually far less destructive than what McConnell, McCarthy, and Barr are presently engaged in.

Veterans luncheons are all still “go” in the Panhandle. I received a letter from Bridgeport Public School with my invitation to gather with all the other veterans in Morrill County for the annual luncheon and presentation.

I think I’ll pass this year: My wife and I really don’t want to be in a lunchroom then an auditorium with a whole bunch of people for several hours when the epidemic is raging out of control. I certainly don’t want to be exposed and bring it back to my so-far Covid-free village.

Moreover, most of the veterans in my county are elderly Vietnam and Korea vets, along with their wives. This seems like a disaster in the making.

He was in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday to participate in a press conference with the state’s Republican party about the election, and has traveled to the Trump campaign’s headquarters in Virginia several times in the last week. This is the very definition of a bad faith argument:

Please, don’t waste our time by suggesting that you just want an “full & fair” anything. From Patch, more about Giuliani’s sex-offender “witness”:

Brooks last ran for office in 2012, when he ran as a Reform Party candidate challenging U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez. He finished last in a field of 11 candidates. He considered a run for Trenton City Council in 2014, but never filed paperwork, according to the New Jersey Globe.

Brooks also ran for Senate in 2006 and 2008, and for Congress in 2004. He’s run as a Green Party candidate, as well as a Libertarian.

In Philadelphia on Saturday, he portrayed himself as a Republican who supported President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, and who was harassed by Democratic poll watchers.

Trenton’s mayor notes he is a perennial candidate who is never taken seriously (as I can see by his party affiliations).

They also note the specific sex crime for which he was convicted is

fondling himself in front of two young girls.

There were 24 defendants at the International Military Tribunal (first Nurember trial) of 1945-46. Maybe should start a list of the 24 top Trumpite defendants. I’ll start with 6:

Trump (of course)
Stephen Miller
William Barr
Sean Hannity
Jared Kushner
Roger Stone

The floor is open for nominations.

Hugh Hewitt
Sarah Sanders
Kayleigh Mendacity (h/t Rick Wilson)
Sean Spicer
Mnuchin
Ivanka Trump
Kjirsten Nielsen
Lindsey Graham

BBC:

Brexit: Government’s bill suffers heavy House of Lords defeat

The government has suffered a heavy defeat in the House of Lords over its controversial Brexit legislation.

The Internal Market Bill contains measures that overrule parts of the UK’s Brexit agreement with the EU.

Peers voted overwhelmingly to remove a section of the bill that would allow ministers to break international law - by 433 votes to 165.

The government said it would reinstate the clauses when the bill returns to the House of Commons next month.

It comes as trade talks continue between EU and UK officials in London as they try to reach an agreement over a future economic partnership.

Former Conservative Party leader Lord Howard was among 44 Conservative peers who voted against the government on Monday night.

He led the calls for the prime minister to “think again” and remove the contentious parts of the UK Internal Market Bill, warning that the government was using the language of “law breakers” everywhere.

Peers also voted to remove another clause, allowing ministers to override parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement relating to Northern Ireland, by 407 votes to 148. Other clauses in the controversial section of the bill were removed without a vote.

For a while I was feeling happy and relieved about the Saturday call that Biden is President-elect. But I am increasingly uneasy about that decision not because of voter fraud but because races have been called without the vote count being completed, based on assumptions, as reasonable as they may be, about the distribution of outstanding votes, in this most atypical of years. It’s not until the vote count is truly completed in Pennsylvania and confirms Biden’s victory that I can breathe. I am hoping that Arizona stands as well as Georgia. We are living through a nightmare and I am less than confident that the EC will evict Trump.

The GOP may well be afraid that if they don’t publicly back Trump on this, Trump may decide to say, “Well fuck you guys, then, I’m starting my own MAGA party!” It goes without saying that if Trump did split with the Republicans and started his own political party, the GOP would likely find themselves hard pressed to get one of their own elected as municipal dog catcher.

Graham may have alluded to this fear when he said the other day that if the GOP didn’t back Trump on this (mis)adventure, there “would never be another Republican President”.

He’ll walk away insisting to his dying day that he was “robbed” of a second term and that the Dems were guilty of “fraud.”

For the Repubs, there is not easy exit from this runaway train. They’re risking legal and political consequences with their increasingly insane efforts to undermine Biden’s victory. Suppose PA Repubs go forward with their suggestions of just outright invalidating the election results and sending their own electors to give Trump their state’s electoral votes. To be blunt, if PA state legislators send a slate of GOP electors to the electoral college to try to help Trump, they are the ones who risk being disemboweled by an enraged mob, not Trump.

Sure, they would love to put Trump in office to piss off the libtards, but it would need to be risk-free, which it isn’t.

Ditto for the Supreme Court. Roberts and Gorsuch, at least, realize that literally making Trump a dictator would reduce their personal power. So what is in it for them? It’s not as if Trump can be trusted to make good on any bribes he promises.

What I’m seeing is ankle-biters like Graham, Gingrich, and the Fox talking heads cheering this shit on from their safe rear-echelon motherfucker perches. It’s nerve-wracking and these shitbirds all need to be fucked massively with flaming cactuses, but that by itself not a direct threat.

Of course one word from McConnell would have shut all this down — he could have said everyone in America can pursue their claims in court no matter how frivolous they are. But he didn’t. So the GOP establishment is deliberately not doing anything effective to discourage Trump’s madness, probably because they want to keep the base energized for the GA runoff.

And if something unexpected happens, the GOP has no real problem with Trump becoming a dictator — they just don’t want to take the risks on his behalf. So the entire GOP establishment also needs to be massively fucked with those flaming cactuses.

McConnell and pals are just throwing red meat to the GOP base in anticipation of the Georgia run-offs. If it looked to the base that they were abandoning Trump, there’s a good possibility they may decide to stay home on that election day and thus hand over control of the Senate to the Democrats. And damn tootin’ that’s the last thing McConnell wants to see happen.

Like that one high-ranking GOP source went on to say about why they’re humoring Trump….”It’s not like he’s plotting how to prevent Joe Biden from taking power on Jan. 20. He’s tweeting about filing some lawsuits, those lawsuits will fail, then he’ll tweet some more about how the election was stolen, and then he’ll leave.”

Privately, they know it’s over for Trump - but they need to keep the GOP base enraged for the next few weeks at least and they’re keeping an eye on 2024 as well.

But it’s still fair to charge these GOP shitbirds for recklessly endangering democracy with this “appease Trump” shit — if something unexpected happens like one of Trump’s stupid lawsuits ends up before the most partisan GOP hack in the entire federal judiciary and shit starts to get traction in court, these same Republicans could easily switch to Trump’s side.

Not to mention that an enraged GOP base is going to have a body count.

At the end of the day, these Republican assholes are doing the same thing they always do — feed red meat to their base in lieu of anything resembling governing. But doing this when the “red meat” in question is an illegal second term for the Spiritual Leader and True Voice of the Pig People is a level of brinksmanship we haven’t seen before.

Much closer to 40 years of no consequences than 4. Nixon resigned but he got that goddamn pardon. To the GOP that meant to get worse GOP Senators instead of better GOP presidents, and we have seen that strategy perfected with Trump’s impeachment trial Senate farce.

The problem with using vanishingly slim possibility that Trump will somehow win in the courts and get the results overturned being used to keep the plebes in a state of constant froth is that you can’t maintain such for long periods of time. Eventually there has to be a payoff or else they begin to question if they’re just being jerked around. Realistically, the make-or-break period is gonna be late Nov/early Dec, when states (by law) must begin certifying their results and selecting electors. Bush v. Gore was decided in part due to the argument on the part of the Bush campaign that if the recounts just kept going until the Gore campaign was satisfied, then it risked putting the state of Florida in jeopardy of failing to meet the certification deadline.

So come by mid December, the Repubs are gonna find themselves at a crossroads: Are they going to put themselves at odds with the courts to prevent one or more states from certifying results that have Biden as the winner? Will they endorse the concept of “faithless electors” and thus risk (as of yesterday) having their own face hefty fines or even jail just to cause a constitutional crisis? Or will they bail on Trump and accept the results of the election, thus putting them at odds with the MAGAts at the most crucial point in the Georgia run-offs?

Will they endorse the concept of “faithless electors” and thus risk (as of yesterday) having their own face hefty fines or even jail just to cause a constitutional crisis? Or will they bail on Trump and accept the results of the election, thus putting them at odds with the MAGAts at the most crucial point in the Georgia run-offs?

The Trump campaign itself and associated cronies will burn anything down to win. So if blue states are prevented from sending any electors to the EC they will be happy with that result.

McConnell and company are taking a degree of risk - but have not been properly called on any such risks in the past by either the public, media, or the rest of their party. That they are razing 200+ years of democratic tradition for the sake of continued power says a lot about their moral bankruptcy and not being fit to hold office or lead this nation.

This is starting to remind me of a quote from JFK in 1962; “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

Targetpractice  Nov 10, 2020 • 3:20:56am

There’s a very real “shit or get off the pot” moment coming for the Repubs and it’s coming sooner rather than later. Eventually the unwashed masses that are the MAGAt coalition are going to get tired of losing in court, get tired of talk about “investigations” and “recounts,” and they’re going to demand that Repubs in those states that Trump lost do more than just talk in front of the cameras. They’re going to demand that state legislatures/bureaucrats try to invalidate vote counts, they’re going to demand that those “responsible” be arrested, and they’re going to (more than anything) demand that the election results be changed in Trump’s favor.

And that’s why I say all this isn’t sustainable up til the Georgia run-offs, because eventually the natives are going to get restless and they’re not going to “let the courts decide.” All the talk about the lack of violence ignores the reality that the assholes who’ve been threatening violence still think the election is going on and the results can still be changed. Why? Because every sack of protoplasm with an (R) next to their names has been telling them for 4 years now that Trump will win and if he doesn’t then it’s due to “fraud.” The party’s backed themselves into a corner here, they can’t give up on Trump without a better excuse than “the courts have spoken.”

That’s the biggest stumbling block they’ve encountered so far: Faux is not going all-in on the “FRAUD!!!” storyline. And while Cavuto cutting the feed yesterday has been one of the more prominent examples, the reality is that Murdoch seems to have realized that Trump’s time is running out and trying to keep him afloat is not in the best interest of any of his outlets. They’ll readily latch onto the talking points if ever some evidence should pop up, but for the time being they’re viewing this quest as decidedly Quixotic.

The problem with using vanishingly slim possibility that Trump will somehow win in the courts and get the results overturned being used to keep the plebes in a state of constant froth is that you can’t maintain such for long periods of time. Eventually there has to be a payoff or else they begin to question if they’re just being jerked around.

I think everyone is underestimating the total control that mass media has over the cult, and by extension over America in general.

This isn’t the way it works. QAnon has never had a single payoff at all, yet the cult only spreads and grows stronger. Other apocalyptic cults can promise the end of the world next week forever, and despite the fact that it never happens, their followers still believe. Republicans killed hundreds of thousands of people and created actual concentration camps, yet their support only went up, and literally the only reason their support went up is more exposure to the disease vector of right wing media.

Cults create reality for their followers. You can confront them with a different reality all you like and they will never believe the evidence of their own eyes and ears. For years, Donald Trump has been a bronzed Adonis superhero who loves each of them personally, and no amount of evidence will ever change that fact for them. In the age of mass media, that level of delusion starts to bleed over into the real world, because it’s one thing to ignore a cult of 300 people in a compound, but it’s another thing when that cult is 70 million people who live around you.

There is no bottom. There is no need for inconveniences such as reality. If Democrats do successfully take office, they are going to have to deal not only with the monstrous challenges ahead, but the fact that 70+million Americans simply no longer believe in the democratic process, the concept of America, or indeed objective reality itself.

President Trump is planning to form a so-called leadership political action committee, a federal fund-raising vehicle that will potentially let him retain his hold on the Republican Party even when he is out of office,” the New York Times reports.

“Such committees can accept donations of up to $5,000 per donor per year — far less than the donation limits for the committees formed by Mr. Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee — but a leadership PAC could accept donations from an unlimited number of people. It could also accept donations from other political action committees

How do you figure Repubs have nothing to lose in this? If Trump fails to steal the election, the most he loses is the presidency and thus his immunity from criminal and civil prosecution.

There is no scenario where they get away with that without consequences.

Consequences!!!??? WTF, they would have pulled off a coup. There would be not future elections.

It’s an extraordinarily cynical ploy by the GOP to be sure. I doubt anyone of them are thinking in terms of a body count, most likely because in their rarified world, such a possibility is unthinkable. Nonetheless, if I had the ear of men like McConnell, or Graham or whomever, I’d be urging them to put the kibosh on this bullshit now - before things get out of hand and we do, in fact, end up with a body count.

at some point, this backfires on republicans. if they are going to push the notion that the vote was stolen from them, then one has to consider that a sizable portion of their constituencies is going to stop voting, because the assumption will be that the game is rigged and it isn’t worth the trouble of standing in line for hours at a time. Meanwhile, Democratic voters have just experienced the delight of knowing that standing in line for hours to vote means that Georgia was won by a handful of votes, as well as Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona. Pennsylvania even was won with few enough votes to where people can probably imagine their personal vote was important to the outcome.

This is one of the many dipshits who follows the nonsense “herd immunity” talking points. He refuses to wear a mask on the floor of the Unicameral.

State Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte acknowledged in an email to his colleagues Monday that he has COVID-19.

“As you know, I finally got my wish and cont(r)acted the COVID-19 virus,” he wrote in the email. “As I suspected it would happen.”

In an interview, Groene said he wanted it over with; he wanted herd immunity.

The American Medical Association says the country needs about 200 million infected and immunized citizens before the chain of infection can be broken. At this time, there have been slightly more than 10 million confirmed cases in the U.S. and no distributed vaccine.

With cases surging in Nebraska, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Monday that he will enact new directives on Wednesday to help slow the spread of the virus.

So a friend of mine lives in Menlo Park, CA, and in fact lives across and down the street from this now former school board president. They were astonished to see the story had made the LA Times.

MENLO PARK, Calif. — A school board president in the Bay Area has resigned after his wife’s racist comments about Vice President-elect Kamala Harris raised an outcry.
Jon Venverloh said over the weekend that he was stepping down from his position with the Las Lomitas Elementary School District in Menlo Park.

His wife, Mehridith Philips Venverloh, tweeted Sunday in response to comments about Harris’ qualifications that “all she needs to be qualified is a black [crude term for female genitalia]! No brain needed!” She also posted several other crude remarks, prompting dozens of parents to demand her husband’s resignation.

In announcing his resignation, Venverloh said he didn’t agree with his wife’s “reprehensible views,” but, given her posts, “I know that my continued service would be a distraction from the work that needs to be done.”

Venverloh, a former Google executive, was elected to the school board in 2018 and had two years left in his term.

Mehridith Philips Venderloh, a supporter of President Trump, apologized in another post, saying her vulgar words were written “in a moment of disappointment.”

“I am deeply sorry and ashamed,” she said, adding that she has been taking medications for a “debilitating neurological disease” but had been weaning herself off them in preparation for a scheduled hospitalization.

“I believe that the change in medication reduced my judgment between right and wrong when I made the posts,” she said.

Other board members of the school district, which includes a middle school in Menlo Park and an Atherton elementary school, condemned the remarks as “racially based and gender-based hatred.”

latimes.com

My friend also says that this couple has volunteered in the past at Menlo Church. This church was most recently in the news when the older son of its (now former) pastor exposed that dad had been protecting the younger son, a “minor-attracted person” who had disquieting encounters with youth. It should be noted that elder son had been pretty much kicked out of his family and church because he was transgender and gee, was “worse” than younger son with the very possible pedophilia.

So it seems it’s kind of on brand that the wife of the local school board president in this very upscale community would be a stone racist/sexist.

President Donald Trump’s defeat has set off a flurry of activity as would-be successors start to position themselves for 2024 and a battle to lead a Trump-less Republican Party begins to take shape.

Likely Republican candidates are about to descend on Georgia to campaign in a pair of Senate runoffs that will determine control of the chamber. They’re taking to Fox News to defend Trump’s refusal to concede. The Republican National Committee is bracing for a possible fight over its chairmanship. It’s amazing to me how many Catholics will still defend their church and send them money.

ROME (AP) — A Vatican investigation into ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has found that a series of bishops, cardinals and popes downplayed or dismissed reports that he slept with seminarians, and determined that Pope Francis merely continued his predecessors’ naive handling of the predator until a former altar boy alleged abuse.

The Vatican took the extraordinary step Tuesday of publishing its two-year, 400-plus-page internal investigation into the American prelate’s rise and fall in a bid to restore credibility to the U.S. and Vatican hierarchies, which have been shattered by the McCarrick scandal.

Francis defrocked McCarrick, 90, last year after a Vatican investigation confirmed decades of allegations that the globe-trotting envoy and successful church fundraiser had sexually molested adults as well as children. The Vatican had reports from authoritative figures dating back to 1999 that McCarrick’s behavior was problematic, yet he continued to rise to become an influential cardinal, kingmaker and emissary of the Holy See’s “soft diplomacy.”

I don’t think any of Trump’s antics are going to work this time around, but the bar for acceptable behavior is being lowered, the goalposts are being moved, just the insinuation that a state’s electoral votes can be set aside for whatever made up reason, is a whole new level of ratfocking that delegitimizes the country’s democratic institutions and processes.

You do notice that I put it in quotes and noted further that it was likely he was a pedophile, right? It is still too early in the morning for me to work myself up into a full throated froth about the way Daniel Lavery was treated by his father, John Ortberg, but Johnny Ortberg, the putative pedophile, was protected.

Looks Like NYPD Cop In Anti-Harassment Office Also Posted Racist Internet Rants. Oops! (Wonkette)

A New York Police Department official is being investigated for possibly posting hundreds of racist and misogynist messages to a notorious bulletin board used by cops, the New York Times reports. Bad enough, but wait, there’s more: The cop, Deputy Inspector James F. Kobel, had been the head of the NYPD’s office for investigating and preventing harassment in the department, until he was removed from the job while the investigation goes forward. Kobel “adamantly denied that he had written the racist messages,” and his defenders suggest maybe he’s just the victim of an elaborate frame job.

When we first saw the story in the Times, we thought, “Huh, again?” Hadn’t we seen this happen before, somebody in an anti-discrimination job who turned out to be a bigot? Turns out it wasn’t quite that — we were thinking of that weird run of cases in the military where officers who ran programs to prevent sexual assault and harassment were charged or investigated for committing sexual assault or stalking. So that’s a completely different example of people who probably shouldn’t be in positions of authority.

There are actually two investigations into whether Kobel was the guy who posted nasty messages. The first, by the investigative arm of the New York City Council, got rolling during the summer, and was wrapped up in a draft report the Times “obtained.” When Times reporters asked NYPD about the allegations in the report, the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau launched its own investigation. Kobel denied the accusations to his superiors, but last week he was “relieved of his command of the Equal Employment Opportunity Division and placed on modified assignment” until the IAB investigation is finished.

Reporting from the fringe of charismatic evangelicalism—one of the “profits” I hate follow (Jennifer LeClaire) is hedging her bets about whether Trump will be the next president.

Trump Prophecy: President Faces a Nebuchadnezzar Moment
ByJennifer LeClaire
Published on November 5, 2020

Vice President Joe Biden appears on the verge of becoming President Joe Biden barring a last-minute miracle, but could that miracle depend on the president’s repentance?

Well there’s her hedge…She’s comparing Trump to Nebuchadnezzar, who was prideful and did not repent and who, according to the Book of Daniel, God made crazy.

LeClaire believes Trump is supposed to be a two-term president but she’s hedging her bets. One of her “covering” leaders, Chuck Pierce, has said this won’t be settled until January 18, but it will be “swampy.” My personal hope is that these guys get the hope of a second Trump term stomped out of them and in a hurry.

Apparently this “word” was met with a lot of opposition as not being fully supportive of Donald Trump, who is God’s anointed. *shakes head*

Fuck the poor. That’s the GOP motto. They don’t care about poor GOPers who vote for them. They don’t care about poor GOPers who get sick after attending Trump’s klan rallies. They don’t care about anyone but the millionaires who profit from redistributing wealth to the rich from everyone else while shifting the burdens to those least able to endure them.

And of course today is when that rationale is tested at the Supreme Court, where the GOP is intent on invalidating Obamacare, which protects those with preexisting conditions from predatory insurers who would hike premiums or deny coverage to nearly half of all Americans since everyone knows someone with a preexisting condition from asthma to cancer to covid19 to diabetes to hypertension and other chronic and acute ailments.

Trump and GOP are suing to invalidate Obamacare during a pandemic when millions are looking for health coverage.

Everything left in Cochise (my county, and I know the Elections staff) is provisional, so not all will end up being valid. That said, I’d expect them to lean heavily Trump. We are very red down here.

When you hear people try to say this election was stolen, ask them how. When they start bring up stories of ballots being brought in, ask them where they got the information. If they tell you they heard about it, keep pressing. When they get to the affidavits, ask them if they read them, and point out they were based on hearsay, and then tell them how hearsay isn’t admissible, for this reason:

“I heard there were a couple of bad votes that were counted.”
becomes
“I heard someone say a few bad votes were counted.”
“How many?”
“I don’t know, five or six?”
becomes
“Did you hear there were nearly ten bad votes counted?”
becomes
“There were probably a dozen bad votes counted.”
becomes

becomes
“Wow, there were nearly a hundred bad votes that we know of that were counted.”

Obamacare desperately needs to be rethought and improved but that’s impossible as long as the GOP retains any branch of the government. There can be no modification to the law that addresses its flaws as long as these snakes retain any power. Of course, the 70 million who voted Trump are fine with that, even if they or their loved ones perish from illness. Gun-humpers don’t care when their children kill or are killed by an accidental discharge from another child.

Fox News, OANN, Breitbart, et al. and the NRA and many churches are the legal drugs that increase racism and eliminate judgement.

their argument is that all the fraudulent Biden votes have no votes for the down ballot offices. not that they know that or have proof if that or anything. but the vote totals for each candidate can be determined i assume.

I’m sure the counters know those numbers
Probably use them for error checking

I bet someone could google it, which I won’t do at work right now.

Biden has 430k votes in Maine, Collins 414k, a difference of about 16k, but Bidens margin in the state is like 70k.

So, the argument that there are an outsized number of ballots with only a vote for Biden in Maine at least is false.

This information is being reported across several different news sources this morning:

Twenty percent (ed. 1 in 5) of coronavirus patients later develop a new mental illness, according to a study.

The most common disorders experienced by COVID-19 survivors within 90 days of their diagnoses are anxiety, depression and insomnia, according to the study published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal.

“People have been worried that COVID-19 survivors will be at greater risk of mental health problems, and our findings … show this to be likely,” said Paul Harrison, a professor of psychiatry at Britain’s Oxford University.

The study looked at the electronic health records of over 62,000 coronavirus patients in the US.

The study group was twice as likely to suffer from a new mental illness than other groups of patients during the same period, researchers said.

His base still believes that Covid is a Democrat hoax after 225+K deaths.

They will buy his claim that the election was stolen despite a 5-million-vote margin

Number of votes is irrelevant. They are all loyal adherents of the EC cult, where a candidate with 20 million fewer votes can still win. They loathe blue states and the residents within them, show the very red maps where acres vote and not people, and are only concerned about those states which Trump won last time but have now switched allegiance. The 5 million margin comes from New York and California, not from real America.

The numbers I’d want are :

Total ballots scanned
Total for all Prez candidates
Total for all senate candidates
Total for all house….
Etc

That would tell you whether a statistically significant number omitted one or more races on their ballots

Things going well here.

Nebraska last week marked its sixth straight week of record new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

The state tallied more than 11,000 new cases during the seven-day period that ended Saturday, close to double the nearly 5,800 new cases of two weeks ago, according to a World-Herald analysis.

The weekly tally works out to an average of more than 1,500 new cases a day.

That left the state holding steady at No. 5 in the nation in terms of new daily COVID-19 cases per capita, behind the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Montana. Neighboring Iowa, with more than 17,000 new cases last week, was No. 7 for new per capita cases.

Nebraska’s week-over-week growth in new cases last week was 54.8%, the nation’s sixth-highest. Iowa was No. 5 for week-over-week growth at 55.4%.

But the figure that has perhaps garnered the most attention in Nebraska over the past week is the growing number of COVID-19 patients in the state’s hospitals.

On Monday, that number stood at 794. Not only was that an all-time high, it was more than double the number of three weeks ago and more than three times the late-May peak of 232.

Reporting from the fringe of charismatic evangelicalism—one of the “profits” I hate follow (Jennifer LeClaire) is hedging her bets about whether Trump will be the next president.

Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle are making moves to expand their influence at the Republican National Committee, three GOP sources, including advisers to the President tell CNN. Some sources say they may seek to take over the party structure themselves.

President Donald Trump’s eldest son and his girlfriend, a Trump campaign fundraiser and former Fox News host, have made it clear to campaign and White House officials they are unhappy with RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who they view as not having done enough to win a close race.

Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle could seek leadership roles at the RNC to position the committee for a comeback run for the President in 2024, the sources said.

“Don Jr. and Kimberly have an eye on the RNC, through themselves taking over or somebody close to them taking over,” a well-placed Republican Party source close to the White House said.

I don’t think he’ll end up in prison. Putting a former president in prison isn’t a good look for the US. Stripping him of assets would probably be the best choice.

He will never, ever go to prison or face a meaningful consequence. He is the embodiment of America’s dark id - the nation would never tolerate it.

The rule of law and equal protection under the law would absolutely insist on imprisoning a former president who engaged in felony conduct, before/during an administration.

Trump is an unindicted coconspirator in federal felonies as part of the Cohen prosecution. He should be prosecuted and jailed accordingly.

Here is a quote from Joe Biden at one of his town halls

BIDEN: What Presidents say matter, people listen. I will make it clear what is needed to be done. I cannot mandate people wearing masks, but we just been told if we should expect another 215,000 dead by January. But if we wore a mask, we’d save 100,000 of those lives. Doing nothing but that.

We have to make sure we lay out to the American people the truth. Tell them the truth and those — and I would make sure that I would call every governor in the country into the White House say you should be putting mandates out if they’re — and if they don’t, I’d call the mayors in their towns and their cities and say put out mandates. You can save lives.

I think Biden is right. I don’t think a national mask mandate via executive order would survive a legal challenge.

It’s inaccurate to say this is about “anyone who worked for the US government.” The website itself says “political appointees.” That’s a fraction of the US government’s staff. The political appointees made a personal choice to enable and empower Trump’s agenda.

and it is not about “blackballing” them, it is a matter of looking into their integrity and reliability in light of who they were working for and what they had been sent out to accomplish…hard to resolve that with a Biden administration’s policies if those past activities included things like family separation, dismantling government agencies, weakening foreign policy, rescinding health, environmental and safety regulations, abolishing minority rights and protections, etc…

Charmingly Persistent  Nov 10, 2020 • 9:16:09am

I have been seeing lots of annoyance at fundraising emails and GOTV texts. I just finished working on GOTV extensively in Colorado, so I can provide direct information on texts, and information I am confident is correct on emails. So let me provide some information and advice to reduce your irritation. I will do emails first, since that is the most relevant for most people right now.

emails:

Every political email is required to have an unsubscribe button. If you click that button you can unsubscribe and that particular organization will stop sending you emails until the next time your email shows up in their collection efforts. Most political groups automatically and immediately unsuscribe you. You don’t have to type in a reason. A few require you to enter the email you want unsubscribed so that’s a bit more bother, but most don’t. Very occasionally it takes a few days to take effect - usually it is by the next day.

“But,” I hear you say, “it doesn’t work! I unsubscribed to an Ossoff fundraising email and I kept getting just as many emails!”

It does work, but you have to unsubscribe for each organization. Ossoff’s campaign. Blue Georgia. Senate Majority.

Advice: click unsubscribe every time you get a fundraising email. You will be able to find the candidate’s Act Blue page by yourself if you want to give them more money. If you do it immediately each time it takes 5 seconds and you get way less email.

Texts:

I sent 25,000 texts in one day this year. Not a typo. This is because we use a system that sends out the first text when you click the button. The texter (me in this example) responds to any replies after that - there are canned replies you can use or type in your own.

Maybe 10% reply? Probably less. If people don’t reply I don’t notice or care. If they reply “stop” or “take me off your list” or “MAGA!” I hit a big Opt Out button to disable their number. I can do it without a reply, or a canned reply - ours is “I am opting you out from future texts immediately. Have a great day.” Or I can type my own reply. If someone says “I already voted for Biden. Take me off your list,” I might add “Thanks you for voting!” to the canned opt-out response. And then I push the button.

I especially enjoy using the canned response when I get a foam-flecked insulting email from a MAGA. “Have a great day!” LOL

Advice:

(1) If you don’t want emails from that group type “stop.” They will push the button and you won’t get any more emails from them for that campaign. Same comment as above: you have to type stop for each group. The Dem party for your county, the Dem party for your state, each campaign. They don’t talk to each other. They don’t share lists or opt-outs.

(2) Vote as early as you possibly can. Most groups update their lists with people who have already voted, though it can take a few days. So you will get fewer texts and fewer calls if you vote early. As a GOTV person, you are also saving me time and effort. We are trying to get out every gettable vote, and if you have voted my list gets shorter.

(3) If you might want to respond to the text, go ahead. It is semi-automated, in that everyone gets the same initial text, but there is a person doing the texting and they read and respond to each reply. You can agree to volunteer. You can ask where your nearest drop box is. You can ask what to do if your mail-in ballot never arrived. You can chat about how awful Trump is. All good! That is what we are there for.

(4) To reiterate: there is no need to respond or explain. If you don’t reply I will never notice. If you type “stop” I push the button. You aren’t hurting anyone’s feelings. Respond only if you want to.

what rises to the level of treason?

The definition of treason was written specifically into the Constitution by forsworn traitors to the British Crown and as such it was defined very rigidly since they had practical experience on the subject. Even when the slave states rose in armed rebellion during the Second Traitorous Slaveholders Rebellion of 1861 and fought a bloody war to overthrow that Constitution, no-one on the losing side was ever charged with treason despite prima facie evidence and over half a million dead bodies.

and it is not about “blackballing” them, it is a matter of looking into their integrity and reliability in light of who they were working for and what they had been sent out to accomplish…hard to resolve that with a Biden administration’s policies if those past activities included things like family separation, dismantling government agencies, weakening foreign policy, rescinding health, environmental and safety regulations, abolishing minority rights and protections, etc…

Endless wingnuts in that thread comparing it to Joe McCarthy (as I recall, a Republican) or the Holocaust (because not hiring a political hack is exactly the same as murdering millions of people).

part of me wants to ask Jake, what part of the Trump Administration ran so efficiently and problem free that you would like to carry-over those hires into a Biden Administration? Do you think Biden wants to retain anyone who’s currently running things like ICE? The Interior? Indian Relations?

feel free to point out a group of Trump officials who have done their job well and we can talk… and by well, we’re talking about enacting public policy that actually is in line with what we understand to be a functioning government other than gutting the departments that appear to be taking place across the government where they have been hollowed out due to partisanship.

and i would add doesnt biden get ‘pleasure of the president’ like any every other president?

They have a narrative to maintain.

There is a grain of truth to it: without Covid, Trump could well have pulled out another victory and an even bigger margin.

So this line of argument gives them an excuse: a Chinese virus weaponized by the Democrats to unseat the most popular President in History.

re: #480 dangerman

you would think after watching Nixon, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II and now Trump that maybe, perhaps the Dems are kind of tired of having to be:

1) on the hook for extending the olive branch
2) having to incorporate Reps into their process
3) cleaning up after GOP perfidy
4) watching the press never holding them accountable

I can understand being “morally” outraged at President Clinton not wanting to be forthcoming regarding a blowjob received out of wedlock from a starry-eyed intern who, while being of age, could be tacitly seduced by the power tripping concept of it all… and yet, while his wife found it in her emotional makeup to forgive him, the Press couldn’t and couldn’t forgive her essential Christian act in doing so.

Yet we go from that very personal type of failing to manufacturing a premise to go to war in order to resolve some deep-seated daddy issues is given a pass, or the tacit racism of the Reagan Administration to deal with their feelings of inadequacy in funding an off-the-books war in Central America and all THAT gets a pass.

Why is that? Now we’re kicking out an administration that sought and obtained assistance from a foreign power in cash, logistics and stolen data to apply it to getting their folks elected and we’re gonna sit back and try and sort thru which of these guys should be retained…

Gov. Ricketts, first lady to quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19 at dinner (Omaha World-Herald)

Gov. Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore are in quarantine after coming in contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus, the governor’s office said Tuesday.

The Ricketts were exposed during a dinner engagement with three other people outdoors on Sunday, according to a spokesman for the governor. The governor and first lady will quarantine for 14 days, said Taylor Gage, the governor’s director of strategic communications.

“One of the people they joined tested positive for coronavirus on Monday,” Gage said. “Neither the governor or first lady are showing any symptoms, and they will get tested at the appropriate time. The governor will host his Tuesday and Thursday coronavirus briefings virtually.”

It is. We have a lot of recommendations in force, which means up to 2 years in the slammer if you fail to comply, and depending on the consequences of your non-compliance, you may end up up river for 18 to life for “aggravated spreading of poison or disease”
Temporary laws are being decided on by Parliament, and tweaks to existing laws are coming.
Basic law (our constituion) sets a very high bar on forcing citizens to do things here or infringing on their rights, like the Finnish lockdown got bitchslapped by a judge eventually.

So they steal the election only for the Presidency and to likely keep McConnell as majority leader. Sounds legit. I should ask Larry to explain the child pornography in his garage. What proof do I have? None but that’s okay I heard it from someone on a hotline.

They’d better start looking at the South Carolina numbers then. This is certainly total TRUMP COUNTRY, but more votes were cast in the Senate race than the presidential—

Presidential—2,513,329
Senate—2,515,104

FRAUD—ILLEGAL VOTES—ARGLE BARGLE.

Ugh
1. A vaccine is a not “cure” or a treatment. Once again, the anti-Science GOP continue to debase themselves.
2. Importantly, these results are based on interim analysis 7 days after the second dose. 7 days! The majority of the volunteers had their second does the day before the election. Fucking anti-Science chimps.

I don’t think the tweet had anything to do with the vaccine. It was an implication that CNN was going to ignore the covid statistics now that the election is over. Which is also stupid because I am looking at CNN right now and there is the covid tracker right on the right of the screen.

This is fine…

(Of course the truly sad thing being that they’ve done such a shitty job managing this that they don’t have enough NON-infected nurses to look after patients)

How is this fine? I realize that this is limited to covid-19 wards, but isn’t there a risk of cross infection between different strains of covid-19 (which I believe do exist to a limited extent — that’s how they were able to determine that many of the American infections came via Europe, not via China directly). Or increasing the likelihood that non-infected medical professionals get it (unless you have separate break rooms, huge badges with everyone’s covid-19 status as of that morning, etc…).

Edit: And I am informed downthread about the “this is fine” meme…This is fine

why should anyone have to risk their life or even die just so you dont have to wear a mask?

They shouldn’t have to. If the choice of freely exercising your rights means a clear and present danger to the life and health to others, you should cease and desist from exercising said rights unless you really have to.
And I wear a mask every time I go outside since the new recommendations came into force here in Stockholm Co. It ain’t that big a deal, and you can get masks that are easy to breathe trhu. And on a related note, this type of mask appears to be the good shit:

In my experience, these are the easiest to breathe thru that I have come across to date.

While I agree with the sentiment as applied to a novel pandemic, there obviously have to be limits to this. I imagine you could reduce deaths due to flu and other respiratory diseases if we all just wore masks all the time forever, but I don’t think anyone is seriously recommending that. So as unpleasant as it is to think of, there is some point on some actuarial table where the losses are “acceptable”

Those of us who engage with morons on the twitters might want to note that 99.9% is wrong (even now, but never mind), as it fails to take into account the complete collapse of the healthcare system in red states. (Had they heard that SD has been reduced to allowing covid-positive nurses WHO SHOULD BE IN BED FOR THEIR OWN SAKES to keep working? And after they all collapse and/or die, what next?)

They should be talking about a death rate of at least 5% — plus the fact that anyone who needs ER treatment or hospitalization isn’t going to get it.

If a former POTUS goes to prison, are they still referred to as “President” or “Mr. President” and have secret service detail? Does anyone know how that works?

they do until they are formally impeached. even then, they probably have to have a security detail because they still would know things that would be detrimental for the U.S. to have known by others.
