Sci-Fi Short Film: “The Looking Planet”

During the construction of the universe, a young spacetime engineer dreams of doing something more than his menial job of planetary ring construction, so he sets out on his own, breaking some fundamental laws in the name of self-expression — and discovering there is more going on behind the scenes of this new universe than anyone imagined.

“… I think my dog is watching me and reporting back to Antifa!”

The commenters on Breitbart are starting the familiar (to anyone who’s ever read the unfiltered Letters To The Editor) paranoiac spiral.

Everyone is against them. Der Fuhrer is always triumphant!

Anyone who deviates in the slightest from this delusion is suspect.

This all reminds me of nothing so much as the briefly-famous book, “Wisconsin Death Trip,” which was a compilation of all the ways that dirtscratching farmers & smalltown folks all killed themselves in the late 1800s.

One of the passages that has always stuck with me dealt with the behavior of the farmers as they awoke to the fact that the “leaders” they trusted had been lying to them, that the bankers were maliciously stacking the deck to rob them blind, etc. etc., and so they started dousing themselves and their children with kerosene and lighting a match.

This is not the first time that the yokels have been led down the primrose path.

I wish I had been able to get Grandma’s first edition of The Joy Of Cooking when she passed away. I found the recipes fascinating since they were formulated during the Depression.

My mother’s mother lived and cooked through the Depression, helping raise her family of 12 brothers. One of our favorite family dessert recipes - vinegar pie - is a perfect example of such a recipe.

Madness results when your entire worldview is proven false.

Viz:

The texts form a grim catalogue of arson, cruelty, dementia, suicide, murder, business failure, incest, premature burial, and regular outbreaks of diphtheria and smallpox. Women kill themselves over grief at the death of their children. Men kill themselves for lack of work. Horror piles upon horror. A brother and two sisters go insane within weeks of each other; a woman poisons her baby with strychnine; another slashes her stomach with a butcher knife; and a man blows his head off with a stick of dynamite. In separate incidents, two elderly women douse their bodies with kerosene and set themselves ablaze.
(snip)
At the end of Wisconsin Death Trip, he suggests that his book reveals how harsh economic conditions produced high levels of obsessive-compulsive behaviour and paranoia among people exposed to unemployment and sudden death who were naturally fearful for themselves and their loved ones. By extension, the book might seem to be an attack on the capitalist underpinnings of present-day America. As Warren Susman notes in the original preface, Lesy shows us not the American Dream, but the American Nightmare.

There is a larger essay here about what the lingering aftereffects of the collapse of the Trump Delusion is going to be on the True Believers.

It has been noted many, many times (particularly by our kind host here) that the Trumpism movement, and indeed the entire GOP, has morphed into a Death Cult.

What will they do when they can no longer cling to their cherished illusions?

“All across America, financial difficulties were causing banks to close. This depression hit Black River Falls hard. Area businesses were closing down; people were out of work. The mostly German and Norwegian immigrants endured long, bleak winters in this isolated landscape. And when disease ravaged the community, all seemed hopeless. This was not the new opportunity they had traveled across an ocean to find.

People became “shack‐wacky.” No wonder. At any rate they went insane with a frequency which would be significant if one knew what was meant by it. There were hearings; a judge determined the matter; and you were sentenced to asylums as people were to prison.”

We have talked about the prevalence of untreated mental illness in the U.S., but have we given thought to what we are going to have to do about it? Our society cannot survive mass numbers of people who are certifiably batshit crazy roaming about and infecting others with their strain of madness & magical thinking.

Rudy Giuliani is over 70 and a longtime cigar smoker.

Covid might be a real problem for him.

Covid was a real problem for Trump: 280,000+ dead, millions sickened, and likely 450,000+ dead by February.

Within the WH itself, 50+ were sickened, including Trump’s immediate family, Chris Christie, and others. Christie was most seriously affected. All of these fuckers didn’t mask and Trump bullied all of them into not masking in and around him.

Sycophantic suckups, even when their health was on the line.

Zero sympathy. They have even less empathy.

Rudy engaged in misconduct furthering Trump’s criminal conduct and shredded the Constitution, his oath, and the rule of law in the process. That he may have exposed everyone else around him because he wouldn’t mask at all of these sham hearings and spectacles is icing on the cake because that’ll be his lasting legacy: a superspreader of a deadly disease that was preventable had he worn a fucking mask.

First Shoo Fly Pie—now you have me thinking about Mom’s Coca-Cola Cake and the time she made it with Pepsi…because she forgot to get Coca-Cola!

Mom was scared to death everyone would notice…nobody did!

Coca-Cola Cake Recipe
There is no question that Coca-Cola Cake is simply one of the best sheet cake baking recipes on earth. The richly sweet syrup and magical bubbly brew of carbonated cola is the not-so-secret ingredient that gives this cake its moist and tender texture. This is the perfectly easy cake for any occasion, from birthdays to Christmas. This is a cake the whole family can agree on.
Yield:
12 servings
Coca-Cola Cake Recipe
Ingredients
Cake
1 cup Coca-Cola
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
Frosting
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/3 cup Coca-Cola
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 (16-ounce) package powdered sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Garnish: 3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted
Directions

Step 1
Combine Coca-Cola and buttermilk; set aside.

Step 2
Beat butter at low speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar; beat until blended. Add egg and vanilla; beat at low speed until blended.

Step 3
Combine flour, cocoa, and soda. Add to butter mixture alternately with cola mixture; begin and end with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended.

Step 4
Stir in marshmallows. Pour batter into a greased and floured 13- x 9-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from oven; cool 10 minutes. Pour Coca-Cola Frosting over warm cake; garnish, if desired.

Step 5
To make the frosting: Bring first 3 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan over medium heat, stirring until butter melts. Remove from heat; whisk in sugar and vanilla.

Step 6
Note: Don’t make the frosting ahead—you need to pour it over the cake shortly after baking!

From the previous thread:

re: #256 7-y (Expectation of Great Things in Due Course)

I disagree that it’s absurd. Everything has a cost benefit. Facebook does, also. I see too much weighing the pros and cons to Facebook from people who value apparently value little of what Facebook has to offer right now.

I see the bad. I really do. I also see an awful lot a good that Facebook permits that cannot replaced, functionally. I just want to see that recognized.

Regulate it, whatever. But don’t get rid of it unless you provide me the functionalities that I value very highly. As much as I do the value of my automobile.

Facebook should not be the only thing in the world that we don’t weigh pros and cons on because we think the cons are so bad.

I think there’s a tendency to devalue the good things that Facebook can do for people because some are soft and personal - like extended families maintaining meaningful regular contact. Some benefits, if you don’t use them, you don’t even know are there. I am part of the board or on the committees of at least 15 different organizations who use Facebook to organize their work. My son has a small retail business that does all of its advertising on Facebook. He increased his gross revenues from $314-$460,000 this year.

Well, since you brought in global warming to a question about automobiles versus Facebook, how much does Facebook contribute to that with the construction of computer equipment and the frightening amount of electricity they use?

The “bad” of Facebook is that they permit the bad. They allow the bad. They don’t have to, but rather than hire enough people to monitor Facebook (which they can absolutely do), they insist they can’t afford it (which they absolutely can).

And I’m convinced your son could do his advertising elsewhere and also increase his gross revenue (back to there are things like US Mail, radio, television, newspapers, magazines, advert serving companies, &c).

“My son made more money thanks to Facebook” is another “the only moral Facebook account is my son’s Facebook account.”

Facebook apologises for psychological experiments on users (The Guardian, 2 July 2014)

I wrote about this at the time (not here) about what amounts to an unethical medical experiment run and paid for by Facebook on its own users, and you’ll never guess what Sheryl Sandberg said about it after they were outed experimenting on their users without their consent, or knowledge. It amounted to “we’ll try to do better.”

People have very little control over large corporations and their behaviour. We pretty much can only call our congressvarmints or vote with our dollars.

I don’t eat at Chik-fil-A despite liking their products because of their support of anti-LGBT organisations. I don’t shop at Hobby Lobby for my calligraphy supplies because of their opposition to women’s rights. (On the latter, I could even rationalise that: Well, I don’t need birth control pills, and calligraphy supplies are more expensive on-line than they are in Scottsbluff.)

As noted in The Verge article I posted in the last thread, it’s a moral choice. I guess we’ll have to end here. I’ve made my moral choice, as have you.

First, there’s the obvious point: Even if this gambit somehow succeeds (spoiler: it won’t), the worst-case scenario is that PA’s electoral votes get tossed.

In that case, Biden would *still* receive 286 electoral votes when the Electoral College votes on 12/14. He needs 270.

The Trump strategy might have worked had it only come down to one state, leaving neither candidate with a majority and sending it to the House or the SCOTUS, where Trump would likely have prevailed.

And it still scares me how close he came to pulling it off, it took a literal record voter landslide to stop him.

Please. This SCOTUS will toss others too if they are sufficiently depraved to toss Pennsylvania. Let’s not treat this so lightly. There have to be serious repercussions for the Supreme Court if it takes this action. I really believe that there are a guaranteed 4 votes for this — and perhaps as many as 6, because I do not trust Roberts one bit when it comes to voting rights and Gorsuch’s behavior on the Cuomo case shows that he cannot be trusted either.

Voter landslide is irrelevant. It’s votes in the right states that matter. Biden could have won by 20 million votes — but if they were in the wrong states, he would lose. The EC has to be removed.

I am in favor of keeping it but on if:

a) the states should be represented directly by population and not by seats in Congress
and
b) it should only kick in if no candidate receives a clear majority of the popular vote

Interestingly, I have a different opinion here. I read somewhere earlier that Alito has published a statement, before the election, that state legislatures are the final authority when it comes to elections, and not the courts. IANAL but have been very troubled by the SCOTUS decisions on voting rights and the Trump certainty that they will rule in his favor. The belief that they wouldn’t squander their reputation on retaining a permanent Republican majority is based on the flimsiest of hopes that Republicans have a loyalty to something higher than their party. I will presume them guilty of this treason until they prove themselves innocent.

Especially given Trump’s insistence on getting the court up to nine seats as soon as possible, and Ted Cruz even telegraphed their strategy by stating that a full SCOTUS might be necessary to decide the outcome of the election. They were planning on that contingency and it is looking like their last Hail Mary Hope.

It doesn’t really matter either way. As noted above, even if they should pull a ruling out of their ass to justify giving PA’s EVs to Trump, that’s still not enough to swing the election his way. And the subject of Kelly’s lawsuit is such that they could not swing that to argue that mail ballots in other states were likewise “invalid.” Meanwhile, no cases in any other swing state are in danger of ending up before the USSC bench.

Like Wendell said, this would be a big matter if the whole election swung on a single state. But it doesn’t, so it isn’t.

re: #63 thedopefishlives

Interestingly, I have a different opinion here. I read somewhere earlier that Alito has published a statement, before the election, that state legislatures are the final authority when it comes to elections, and not the courts. I am cautiously optimistic that the Supremes might actually reject this bulkshit.

as an aside, w/r/t ‘bulkshit’, you may have all known this.
i learned it today.

Brandolini’s law, also known as the bullshit asymmetry principle, is an internet adage which emphasizes the difficulty of debunking bullshit: “The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.”

now multiply ‘bull’ into ‘bulk’ and you can see that’s why they’re so successful:

it’s volume to the power of the asymmetry

I have precisely zero sympathy for Rudy. He knowingly refused to mask or social distance and played sycophantic suckup to mass killer Trump in his disastrous covid19 response. He’s currently trying to steal an election and may have infected a ton of people at those sham hearings.

Now, he’s able to jump the line, get top of the line care, and likely doesn’t have to worry about the cost of whatever experimental drugs and treatments they pump into him unlike most Americans who may face bankruptcy or worse from a hospital stay of any kind.

I have zero fucks to give for Rudy. None. I have some for those he likely infected as a result of spreading covid far and wide.

re: #249 Belafon

A proposal to end socialism in the US, such as ending farm subsidies, publicly owned utilities, and only sending to states 1.5 times what they pay to the government:

m.dailykos.com

If you tried to privatise our state electric districts you’d have a damn revolt here.

Of course when you point out the government literally owning the electric network is socialistic and if you don’t like how it’s run, you can vote out the officials, you’ll get in response “that’s different, it’s government run, not socialism.” Word definitions are interchangeable to Republican politicians to stop thought.

The local example is the water and sewage system in my town (population 124) and Oshkosh forty miles away (population 800).

A group of individuals pitched the idea to the village board in Oshkosh they could operate the system more efficiently and cheaply than the village board did. That was pitched to the voters who voted to privatise the water system (according to conservative orthodox religion, the private sector does everything better than government).

That company failed, because it turns out complying with state law and federal standards for water was more than they could do. They sold off the company to a hedge fund.

Their water prices are about 600% of ours.

It’s not an original idea to me (someone quoted an Adam Parkhomenko tweet above), but I’m 150% in favor of the idea of denying ex-president Trump an Air Force ride out of DC on Jan. 20.

It’s a courtesy, a traditional norm offered to a former president at the end of his term.

Why should a man who’s taken a massive dump on every established norm and tradition of the office he’s soiling get to expect to have those norms and courtesies extended to him once he’s gone?

Give him whatever’s required by statute - Secret Service protection, funding for an office and staff - but not one iota more.

If he’s not following the norm of receiving the Bidens at the WH and riding with them to the inauguration, let him walk out the gates at 12:00 and call a fucking Uber to Dulles.

Ossoff I saw put it well the other day. In this runoff, we’re seeing the old Southern Strategy in action. New, blue Georgia sending an African American pastor who has been the pastor of MLK’s old church and a 33 year old Jewish man who once worked for John Lewis would be beautiful poetry to put an end to Perdue and Loeffler and Mitch’s charge of the Senate.Thing is, the more that time goes on, the more I think it can and will happen.

We all need this book yesterday:

THE RECKONING will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD—a new leader alone cannot fix us.

Yeah I expected that. Frankly winning at the polls was the easy part of this. Having a peaceful transition not next year but beyond will be a challenge. I do like the job Biden is doing filling out the cabinet- Becerra would have been a good choice for AG or the Harris Senate vacancy too. So alot of these men and women are not only qualified, diverse, but also a wide range of skills they bring to the table. I just hate seeing the creation of an American version of the stab in the back legend being created before our eyes.

Every time Kelly Loeffler says radical or socialist, remember she’s the radical, and these are the conditions she’s working to bring back:

“…After U.S. officials in Colombia and United Fruit representatives portrayed the workers’ strike as “communist” with a “subversive tendency” in telegrams to Frank B. Kellogg, the United States Secretary of State, the United States government threatened to invade with the U.S. Marine Corps if the Colombian government did not act to protect United Fruit’s interests.
…………………………….

The workers of the banana plantations in Colombia went on strike on November 12, 1928. The workers made nine demands from the United Fruit Company:

Stop their practice of hiring through sub-contractors
Mandatory collective insurance
Compensation for work accidents
Hygienic dormitories and 6 day work weeks
Increase in daily pay for workers who earned less than 100 pesos per month
Weekly wage
Abolition of office stores
Abolition of payment through coupons rather than money
Improvement of hospital services

……………………………..

“The troops set up their machine guns on the roofs of the low buildings at the corners of the main square, closed off the access streets, and, after issuing a five-minute warning that people should leave, opened fire into a dense Sunday crowd of workers and their families including children. The people had gathered after Sunday Mass to wait for an anticipated address from the governor.”

KJV:

¹Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

²Therefore, when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
³But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
⁴That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

⁵And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
⁶But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

I blame Donald Trump for this. His completely irresponsible talk has led to threats against *school superintendents* from parents. I also blame my congressman, Andy Biggs, for his irresponsible talk and behavior.

PARADISE VALLEY, AZ — ABC15 getting exclusive insight Saturday into why the superintendent of one of our state’s largest school districts could resign Monday, after only a year-and-a-half on the job.

Since ABC15 first reported the Paradise Valley Unified School District governing board will consider Superintendent Dr. Jesse Welsh’s resignation during a special meeting Monday, ABC15 has been inundated with messages from concerned parents, teachers and staff. All of them claim Dr. Welsh’s possible departure is due to disturbing behavior from parents demanding in-person instruction.

The district currently has two of three benchmarks in red and switched all students to remote learning on November 23. The decision seems to have taken the ongoing community conflict to a new level.

Definitely not in Texas, though Abbott and various other NRA stooges did try to include guns and ammunition in an annual sales tax holiday, like the one for school supplies.
Beyond that, there is a 10% federal excise tax on handguns, 11% on long guns and ammunition. It has been on the books since 1919, amended 1954.

re: #163 i(m)p(each)sos

I’m thrilled to allow Trump his spectacle because he’s actually talking about leaving and Biden assuming office. Let’s encourage this wholeheartedly so he can focus on a post-Presidency life instead of redoubling his efforts to have SCOTUS overturn results and install him as President. As I keep repeating, the 6 GOP members of the Courts have zero credibility — wait, I’ll grant Roberts epsilon credibility, where as usual in mathematics, epsilon is a number greater than 0, but approaching 0. I want Trump to drop his pursuit of retaining office.

In my darkest moments, I wonder if the GOP senators such as McConnell and Cruz who don’t acknowledge Biden’s victory are aware of possible SCOTUS intentions to intervene and short-circuit the traditional (and legal) assignment of electoral votes.

In normal times, or in a normal country even today, a performance like Loffler’s tonight would be enough to end her candidacy and make her a national laughingstock. Today, she is another widely worshipped Trump acolyte. Media both siderism legitimizes that position.

Yeah, I got to be hard-ass daughter yesterday. My mother was trying to get herself into the garage with her walker. There is a step. She can’t see well enough to get up/down that step and every time she tries my brother and I both worry. My brother has told her not to go down that step but to ask him for help. She didn’t yesterday, he got upset and slammed down his brand new cellphone and I dashed over to tell Mom that I would get whatever she wanted. Which I did. I then read her the riot act—“If you break your hip there is no room in the hospital, mom, COVID is worse than ever”—and she asked “Worse?” “Yep, worse than this summer.” I hate getting on to my mother but she does not need to be in the hospital, not now, not ever.

These polls aren’t worth the pixels that display them.

OT: Right now, I am wishing Sidney Powell be struck with coronavirus and forced to be hospitalized at least through the end of the month. And Jenna too!

Turn the step into a gradual carpeted ramp. Throw a ton of light on it.

It’s not a spine he lacks — it’s a sense of decency. Barr auditioned for this job — and discovered there were attorneys in the DOJ who didn’t bow to his pressure.
