Colbert: Kevin McCarthy Is Playing Both Sides of the GOP’s Civil War

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene tried to distance herself from “words of the past” today, but she need not have bothered as House minority leader Kevin McCarthy declined to take action against her, effectively adopting her conspiracy theories as mainstream GOP values. #Colbert #ALateShow #Monologue

There are 2 branches in the unholy alliance that comprises the GOP: the “insane” Trumpster QAnon base and the “sane” plutocrats/neocons. Neither branch is healthy for the well-being and survival of our nation as a flourishing democracy.

I love how these fucking morons somehow think their foreign or domestic policy is worth crowing about. The American people voted in a landslide that YOUR POLICIES ARE SHIT. So stop complaining about the other guy’s just because you’re a bunch of pathetic hacks who have nowhere to go and nothing to do, except wait for the Justice Department to haul your asses in for crimes against humanity and grift.

Well, it’s him and then that comment from Nikki Haley further upthread. Like, you guys aren’t the US government anymore. No one gives a shit what you say. And we all voted against those policies, so complaining that Biden isn’t doing enough to enact your favorite policies is basically just telling us that he’s doing his damn job.

re: #43 Charles Johnson

This is why GOP fears a prolonged trial with witnesses. Because they’re going to get themselves implicated as well - felony conduct will attach as witnesses testify under oath - perjury for the liars, misprison for failing to report crimes that were known, and conspiracy/accessory for being involved in the acts leading up to the insurrection.

And the crimes will extend to trying to steal the election - election interference, which is also a felony. That one should worry Graham quite a bit.

He is aware that (1) perjury is a crime and (2) the sitting President will not be pardoning him for it. I am confident that his attorneys have painstakingly explained to him that they cannot continue to represent him if he insists on testifying.

Updated - It appears to be 2 hours long, not 3. So 10 hours each day is devoted to this crap.

I’ve seen reports of golf-ball sized hail or baseball-size. Anything below golf-ball size is just called “small”.

The softball size hail we had last summer is what trashed our car and roof.

Boulder size hail is named after Boulder, Colorado, which is a specific size.

Just a dream…but imagine if in the break or before the start, is Trump that comes out on the green field and then behind his back the lights go off and on the big screen starts a video. And it pratically tells what happened since the day of the Capitol riot and so on, and then the video ends with..”The best is yet to come..” AND THEN the EBS starts going off in each home!!!!!!!!!!! (ok if I think I should go write fanfictions..but I really wish this would happen).

(a repeat)
So, I finally got to use my canned rebuttals of twitter-level Holocaust denial in response to this:

wzo.org.il

Moscow - Professor of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Civil Service (RANGiDS) under the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Matveev on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day provoked a loud scandal, advising teachers to tell children that “there was no Holocaust.”

Matveev, a doctor of technical sciences and a retired colonel, held a webinar showing a slide entitled: “The Genocide of the Jews in 1938-1945. There was no Holocaust!” and called the “myth” the extermination of six million Jews.

“In order to burn (the body), you need a furnace with forced injection of oxygen. No such furnaces were found in Germany. So this is another, unfortunately, myth. No gas chambers were found … and this gas was used for disinfection … It was impossible to let six million victims through all the concentration camps. Therefore, this figure, six million, is nothing but fiction … We as representatives of education must carry the truth to the masses. Conclusion: There was simply no Holocaust in that volume, ” the professor said.

I published a condensed rebuttal of his slideshow at a semi-official Russian site, the link is in my FB:

The unit of mass in the US system is a slug. I’ve literally never seen it used instead of a slew of “weight” measurements used in it’s place and had to look it up.

I just looked it up (wading through garden animals, bands, railroad stock, counterfeit coins, and other uses of the word at Wikipedia)

The slug is a derived unit of mass in a weight-based system of measures, most notably within the British Imperial measurement system and the United States customary measures system. Systems of measure either define mass and derive a force unit or define a base force and derive a mass unit (cf. poundal, a derived unit of force in a force-based system). A slug is defined as the mass that is accelerated by 1 ft/s2 when a force of one pound (lbf) is exerted on it.

They give an equation there to calculate slugs:

1 slug=1 lbf x (second squared/feet)

That’s many more slugs than I ever knew existed.

That Wikipedia article gets better at the end.

The blob is the inch version of the slug (1 blob is equal to 1 lbf⋅s2/in, or 12 slugs)

So that’s what the film was about, obscure physics terms.

re: #193 austin_blue

Mass is the measurement of how much matter (or I guess, how much that matter interacts with the Higgs field). It varies with energy and fraction of the speed of light it’s moving relative to observers. So in most cases it’s “constant”.

Weight is force of gravity on that mass.

If you knew how rare it is to actually get a scrap of anything fabric-like from an ancient site, because fabric mostly rots. The scientists were able to determine that the fabric had been dyed with secretions from murex sea snails, which were used for centuries to make the prized Tyrian purple.

Mass is how much ‘stuff’ an object has.

Weight is the force on said mass in a gravitational field.

So in ordinary life, the main manifestation of mass is the weight from earth’s gravity, which never appreciably changes. Thus the easy conflation of mass (fixed property of the object) with weight (depends on both mass and gravity).
