NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

Candles and books rest on a trunk at the bottom right corner of the wide shot. There, too, are special photographs of alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins with family in his childhood home in Philadelphia. “One of the brightest things about this pandemic was going home to spend time with my mother, father and grandmother after being on the road for a while,” Wilkins told NPR recently.

He also had time to meet up with his long time bandmates — Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, Kweku Sumbry on drums —in Manhattan’s Sear Sound studio to record this set. The quartet has been playing together for years, which is remarkable considering Wilkins is only 23 years old. In 2019, they recorded Wilkins’ debut album, Omega, and released it last year to high acclaim. The project is all about Blackness, Black theory, the Black experience and the struggle and triumph that go with it all.

With a carefully crafted form and melody, “Grace and Mercy” is a lyrical story about peace, forgiveness and humility. “Warriors” is a driving, dynamic tune that conveys the shield of protection provided by our inner circles. “The Dreamer” is a tender piece that honors the Black writer and activist James Weldon Johnson and is based on his poem “A Midday Dreamer.” The opening lines are played effortlessly on bass by Johns and when Wilkins joins in, his melodic saxophone exudes the rhythm of the poem’s first stanza: “I love to sit alone, and dream, and dream, and dream…”

One time I ate two brownies and I shoulda ate one. I was, like, close to death.

Not really. It’s fucking weed. Shit won’t kill you.

Smoking it probably won’t — but ingesting it?

From ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:

For obvious ethical reasons, there is no experimental evidence to determine the lethal dose in humans; but the dose that kills animals range from 40 mg/kg to 130 mg/kg intravenously. Well-controlled studies have not implicated in utero marijuana exposure in any major fetal growth or physical abnormalities, but it may have may have long-term emotional and behavioral consequences. Marijuana has an affinity for lipids and accumulates in human milk, so its use is contraindicated during breastfeeding.

From rehabs.com:

It seems that not a day goes by that I do not see some post on social media claiming that there has never been a death due to marijuana overdose. There’s just one problem with this: it simply isn’t true. In fact, spreading this myth is quite dangerous because it could well encourage someone to ingest a fatal dose of marijuana in the false belief that there is no such thing as marijuana poisoning.
……….

Cannabis is indeed much safer than alcohol, Tylenol, or Prozac, and many, many times safer than prescription opioids, but it is still possible to ingest enough to kill you. Heck, even water will kill you if you drink too much too fast. Therefore, these internet memes which claim that there has never been a death due to marijuana are not only false, they are irresponsible and may in and of themselves lead to increased marijuana poisoning deaths by encouraging reckless behavior.

You should have had your experiences chronicled in the New York Times, like Maureen Dowd.*

*sent to Colorado to check out the legal-weed scene, ate like a pound of chocolate edible at one time, and spent the rest of her visit zoned to the bones in her Denver hotel room (The Brown Palace, I think: at least she had a nice place to crash).

While the Amanda Chase accoutn seems to have been faked, there does still appear to be at least one GOP legislator who is suggesting there is a rash of marijuan oD deaths in Virginia

Using this logic, I’m sure the the Virginia GOP will next be supporting the banishment of alcohol consumption state-wide.
I would imagine alcohol annually contributes to more deaths across the Commonwealth than marijuana consumption and marijuana related crimes

OD or allergy?

The numbers that I have read are about 5-10% of the population can have adverse immune mediated reactions to THC. This is a discussion being had in the food industry and how the use of hemp in foods (and drink, e.g., beer) could be potentiality problematic for some users.

MARIJUANA CANNABIS ALLERGY

Allergy and Sensitization
Cannabis exposure is common. In the southwest United States pollination of female plants by the males of the species results in airborne dissemination with inhalation and resulting sensitization. Marijuana sensitization can also occur in workers involved in the flourishing marijuana industry.

Hempseed exposures can be inadvertent as it is found hidden in foods and drinks.

Allergic sensitization including the development of specific IgE can result from inhaling, smoking, touching, and eating marijuana or cannabis allergens.

In the meantime, I’m over here suffering from a lack of sleep because I’m so anxious that my pipes might freeze. Matters were not helped today when I toasted one of the circuits in my house; it’s now dead, I have to replace a bad outlet. That removes one entire circuit on which I could run a space heater while I wait for my furnace blower motor to arrive tomorrow and get the heat back online.

My only regret is discovering them after Sandman died. He died on stage of a heart attack in Italy.
Two string slide bass and a baritone sax and a drummer who can keep the groove.
Wall of sound from 3 instruments. Check out Morphine and Mark Sandman cuts.

Keep your faucets open enough for a slow trickle and keep the cabinets underneath open. Flush the toilets every few hours too. Hang in there!

I managed to get the situation stabilized by moving the heaters around a bit. The good news is, the missing circuit gives me an excuse to finally remap the breakers in the breaker box, as the labels that the previous homeowner put on there are woefully incorrect. I don’t know how they did anything electrical in this house.

You may want to think about running a small stream of water just to prevent the pipes from bursting from freezing.

Right now I’m having all sorts of fun with a LG washing machine that uses rapid closing valves, which causes water hammering - and I still get the hammering even with a a water hammer arrester installed. Had a plumber over, and he recommending that we totally empty the plumbing line and let the in-line pressure relief link get refilled with air.

Oddly enough, that wasn’t one of the things that a recent Washington Post article talked about as a remedy.

In a serious emergency you can clean the filter on an electric clothes dryer, disconnect the vent to outside, and run it empty for a while. If you put a light load in it, it will produce a lot of moisture and some lint. They used to sell a diverter and filter box for the trick.

This is not a thing you would do routinely.

If you’ve got a refrigerator with a water dispenser, that too could be a problem (either as the cause, or the result). We installed a water hammer arrester on the washing machine and that helped considerably.

Unfortunately, our dryer is gas. Fortunately, as previously mentioned, I borrowed a truckload of space heaters placed in strategic locations in the basement and main floor of the house, and now they are properly organized on separate electrical circuits, so aside from an astronomical electrical bill for January-February, I should be good. I had much the same setup this morning before the circuit blew, and the house was 70 degrees with an outside air temperature of -6 degrees F (-21.1 degrees C).

What’s wild is that I only hear the real nasty water hammering at the washer’s hot water inlet - because the refrigerator’s line is about 1/4’s in diameter I don’t hear the hammering there; nor do I hear hammering with my relatively new Bosch dishwasher.
