Trevor Noah: The GOP & Fox Blame AOC’s Green New Deal for the Texas Power Crisis

Millions of Texans still without power are going to extreme lengths to stay warm, the mayor of Colorado City steps down after telling residents “the weak will perish,” and Fox blames AOC’s Green New Deal for the power outages when poor oversight is the real culprit. #DailyShow #TrevorNoah #Texas

The world is better today that Rush Limbaugh is no longer here. He was a vile human being, but he just latched onto the evil others created and promoted its message. He was a bit player in the right wing conspiracy tearing this nation apart. He wasn’t responsible for the attacks on Bill Clinton throughout his administration nor for Gingrich’s successful campaign to win control of the House. He didn’t provide Trump with his birther storyline, nor his racism, nor his successful campaign to become president. It was Hannity and Fox who advised Trump, not Limbaugh.

Maybe I am underestimating his pernicious impact on this nation, but it often seems that his role has been exaggerated. There are others who are poisoning this nation — ALEC, the Cato Institute, the Mercers, the Koch Bros — he was a sideshow.

He may have become a sideshow during the Trump era, but without Limbaugh, and the rise of the right wing media he kicked off, I doubt the stage could have been set for the rise of Trump, or anyone like him. As for him being a bit player, he may not have added much in the realm of right wing propaganda, but his radio show, along with the clones that followed, as well as blogs and websites and Fox, etc, mainstreamed and normalized the vile bullshit others created before him, which to me is just as bad, if not worse.

As MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow explained Wednesday evening, a 2011 freeze, exactly ten years ago, resulted in exactly the same problem that Texas is facing now. After it was over the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued a 300-page report detailing what Texas needed to do to prevent it from happening in the future. ERCOT sent “recommendations” to its power generators, who apparently didn’t implement the suggestions.

We were snowbirding at the Tucson rock show during that 2011 winter blast. Damn it was cold with 30-40 mph wind gusts. Furnace in our RV couldn’t keep up. Used every blanket we had.

There’s been many comments about the shortage of natural gas today and it was the same in 2011. Demand for natural gas was so high the as company could not maintain adequate pressures so they had to shut the lines down. When the emergency was over, the gas company had to relight all the pilot lights to get the system up and running. Took many days.

One problem that occurred in Tucson that I haven’t seen reported now is the practice of many people in these southern areas to not use or maintain the anti-freeze in their vehicle engines. Mostly lower income people who couldn’t afford the $10 or so for a gallon of anti-freeze. There were a lot of frozen and busted engine blocks after that 2011 event.

Yet his show was curiously devoid of any skill at argument….

“Limbaugh’s program was useless in this regard. He could blather for hours without going from a premise to a conclusion. His only tools for processing opposing points of view were assertion, mockery, and resentment. Limbaugh liked to call himself smart, but he was a lifelong stranger to reason. He hid this weakness with a remarkable ability to gab smoothly and seamlessly.”

Morning Lizardim from the stubbornly snowing wild north country. I thought it was supposed to be a short series of snow showers and then done, but nooope - it kept snowing all day, and all night, and into this morning. Not a lot, but enough to be really freaking annoying when I got up this morning to haul out the garbage and grab some essentials from the gas station grocery. There’s still a light dusting left in the wake of my efforts, but I’m at the point in the season where I just can’t be bothered anymore. I see Raphael Cruz has, in the proud and courageous tradition of Republican politicians everywhere, done a runner in the face of adversity in his home state, fleeing to Cancún rather than deal with the reality that he’s an insufferable douchecanoe and the economic policies he so admires have failed repeatedly in the face of Mother Nature. How go things among the lizardfolk on this lightly snowy and finally-above-zero-degrees Thursday?

That takes “skill”.

Cruz doesn’t give a shit about how many millions of Texans are without power or water. He has the means to go where it’s warm and avoid the problem. He can afford to travel. He can escape the shithole that now is Texas.

He doesn’t care. He doesn’t have any answers. GOPers never do. They care only about their own profit and power. Doesn’t matter what happens to the very people that voted him in office, because that was never something he cared about. He, like the rest of the GOP, don’t care about people, only their own power. They will lie and spew crazy shit out of a firehose to get white people angry about absolutely everything to vote for the GOP, but when they’re in office, the only things they can settle on to even attempt doing is scuttling the safety net, massive tax cuts for their wealthy cronies, and pushing white nationalist policies because their base has been primed to accept nothing less thanks to decades of misinformation from Fox and the likes of Rush, Hannity, etc.

Cruz doesn’t have a plan to deal with the crisis in his state. He’s part of the fucking problem.

He should resign but wont. Cornyn too. Those two are worse than useless for Texans. The entire GOP has failed Texas, and it took a snowstorm to do it far more immediately than their disastrous pandemic response could.

About 70% of politics is precisely “performative drama”. FDR didn’t go ashore at Normandy.

I wouldn’t have asked him to, but your job is to get involved in ways that show support, not check the fuck out and flee the country at the first hint of pushback. Pressure state legislators to fucking do something. Co-sponsor a bill with a House member to get some kind of reform going. In general, don’t be an apathetic idiot.

“DeSantis is facing questions over his decision to provide seniors living in two of Manatee County’s wealthiest ZIP codes with special access to the vaccine.”

Karl rove. We can dream

Mr. Trump may not be fully aware of shifting currents among congressional Republicans. More members now admit privately that Mr. Trump had no coattails in last fall’s election. Especially in the suburbs, some Republicans and many GOP-leaning independents refused to take his lawn signs or support him. That’s why so many Republican congressional candidates ran ahead of the former president.

Mr. Trump crowed Tuesday that he “received the most votes of any sitting President in history.” Then again, Joe Biden received more votes than any candidate in history—and seven million more votes than Mr. Trump.

Despite possessing all the powers of incumbency and leading a united GOP, Mr. Trump lost the presidency. If he returned for another White House contest, leading a divided party at war with itself and out of power, he’d be wiped out

I thought I’d post a couple of recent itms from Tony Ortega’s Scientology blog which have some wider relevance.

First up, there’s the alleged $1.8 billion Ponzi scheme a Scientologist money manager was spearheading. While this is not Madoff money, there was a period in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the title of “biggest Ponzi scheme” was held by Scientologist Reed Slatkin. en.m.wikipedia.org

Yesterday there was a hearing in the case in Brooklyn, where the prosecution disclosed that it had *13 million* (you read that right) documents it is prepared to turn over to the defense in the next several weeks. There’s also a discusdion about whether a prosecution witness might be a spy.

tonyortega.org

The other story is thst of Leigh Dundas, notorious anti-vaxxer, Scientologist and potential sedetionist. The FBI would like to chat with her, presumably based on some videos she took of herself when in Washington, DC on January 6. Currently, she appears to be living it up (a la Ted Cruz) in Mérida, México.

tonyortega.org

It does warm the cockles of my cold, cold heart to see people working together to locate and track down these insurrectionists.

You may also have heard about Citibank’s attempt to claw back a $507 million dollar loan payment made to creditors of Revlon. A NY state appellate court ruled the creditors could keep the payment.

cnn.com

Normally, this is not what happens on cases like these, because it’s considered unjust enrichment. Howver, in this particular instance, there were three factors:

1) this was an expected payment, but not until 2023.
2) the payment matched to the penny the principal and interest owed on the loan. If you’ve ever worked a commercial loan payoff, these change day by day and you have to be in contact with your loan department to get the right number.
3) Revlon went on the assumption that Citi had effective internal controls to avoid significant mistakes.

Citi says it will appeal.

Optics? Cruz doesn’t give a shit about optics. After all, he’s the same craven coward and corrupt nutjob who warned about Trump and then Trump not only dumped on his wife and his father, but Cruz turned around to be the most sycophantic suckup among all the Trump suckups in Congress.

That takes “skill”.

…..

3 points of disagreement here:
1. TBF: Lindsey is the biggest suckup — not Cruz.
2. For generations, white nationalism has been the core value of most white Southerners, especially Texans. This is just a continuation of their longing for the Lost Cause.
3. Unlike the pandemic, this is a temporary crisis. Within a week, most residents will have forgotten their panic. And they certainly won’t blame Republicans. As Rick Perry said: Texans would prefer a few days of outage over government regulation. Especially when the federal government is willing to help them out with no strings attached. Maybe insurance companies will force ERCOT to take appropriate measures.

President Biden will be sending emergency power generators to Texas as well as instructing FEMA to provide water and tons of blankets to residents. One thing he’s not doing is telling Texas to rake the snow or jog in place or nuke the storm or bow to his feet for crumbs.

Those generators will have 5G listening and tracking devices installed in them.

In January 2004, he was arrested after allegedly exposing his penis to two women at a bowling alley, according to an arrest affidavit. Lauren Boebert (then age 17 and known as Lauren Opal Roberts) was also there. Jayson Boebert pleaded guilty to public indecency and lewd exposure, earning himself four days in jail and two years’ probation. …”

Might have to see how long this takes to clear up since water treatment and other infrastructure is messed up. Plus damage to homes due to broken pipes, etc. Which leads to finding out how much individuals get hurt by higher costs getting handed down to them (natural gas, insurance payouts, etc.) And it’s unclear yet what sort of games the various insurers might be playing in order to avoid paying out.

This wasn’t limited to Whataburgers. Keep in mind that there were (and still are) a lot of residences without power - a situation that I was painfully dealing with on Tuesday/Wednesday - which means they weren’t able to cook hot meals, and because of the different road conditions in an area, some restaurants might be open while others are closed. I ended up driving about a half hour to even find a place that was open (in my case a Braum’s) and the in-line wait in drivethru was about 45 minutes.

the American voter prefers people who win wars.

The 2004 race was between two men who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Courtesy of the Swift Boat Liars, the man who engaged in real combat was deemed less worthy and brave than the pilot who defended Texas from Oklahoma. But example 11ty billion of the corruption of GOP politics years before Trump came down the escalator.

but why? “The weak shall perish” is their whole philosophy.

(For values of “weak” that mean non-white, non-rich).

Actually, the GOP quote is that “the weak shall parish”. That makes the bumper sticker even better.

He’s in a risky business using right-wing authoritarians to empower himself. They’re the sort of people who might literally tear him into pieces when right-wing political choices leave them without heat, or with a $30K electric bill because of price spikes.

thanks for this. I would have completely missed it. By the way, does anyone know if it’s normal for a cat to theoretically be stone dead, but practically apparently loving the hell out of it? I swear, this cat moves around for about 20 minutes out of 24 hours. I’m assuming while I sleep is the time she is down on the floor moving her little cat bed around, trading in the Asian markets, etc. A couple nights ago, she decided that comfort consisted of getting next to me and then throwing her ass up on one of my shoulders. “I’m checking your browser history,” I told her. “you’d better not have been on pornhub again!”
