Charlie Hunter - I’ve always dug what Elmore James did with this tune. I wanted to come up with a groove that would have been fun for HIM to play on.
@Lucy Woodward - Lyrically, he was coming from a profoundly deep place. But I think many people can relate to feeling like a stranger in this world on some level.

Stranded on Trump Island, the GOP lets Biden play the long game
washingtonpost.com

This article made sense to me.

But Biden’s intuition is that economic questions unite less economically privileged voters across racial lines — and that many non-college-educated voters think the Democrats have stopped talking to them altogether. By addressing their concerns explicitly and sympathetically, as he did last week, Biden hopes first to close this communications gap and then deliver tangible benefits.
There’s certainly a case that American politics are now so fluid that sturdy realignments are impossible.
But with Republicans stranded on Trump Island, Biden has an opportunity to hold his party’s base and begin poaching the GOP’s core voters. He’s made no secret of his intentions.

I saw the Charlie Hunter Trio once at the Fillmore in San Francisco. After about half a set I looked at the stage and asked the guy next to me, “Who’s laying down that great bass line?” I didn’t realize he had an 8 string guitar with a bass pickup for the bottom 3. It was freakin’ amazing.

What happened in this encounter?

Posted yesterday. I was in the hospital getting a Humira IV. Day before spent half the workday with an angry caller demanding his back payment. Asshole called back and demanded to talk to me while I was in the hospital. He said if I didn’t talk to him he would go to his congressman. So I had to call him back on my cell, tell him I am in the hospital. Asshole called me a liar, used all 7 of the Carlin words you can’t say on TV, demanded I issue his payment on the spot. Explained I am unable to do that, activated the phone camera and showed him I had a needle in my arm and a UV going. He called me a liar.

Then sure enough on my cell comes a call from a staffer for Fuckhead Gym Jordan screaming at me and saying they will issue a Congressional reprimand that I won’t isssue the back payment. Explain to the clown that I cannot issue immediate payments on a claim that hasn’t been processed. Staffer screamed at me. Finally I called the servicing office and explained the situation to them. They knew that the jerk was calling them constantly.

So I hope Gym Neighbors Jordan gets the butt bongoing he so richly deserves. And his staffers can go fuck themselves.

This article made sense to me.

I think Democrats did lose some of the proper language. Every job requires so e form of training. Lots of jobs that used to have on the job training shifted that to requiring a degree when taxes were lowered to the point that companies saw no need to invest in their employees. And in the US, places that aren’t associated with colleges just don’t get much attention.

I would like to reform the taxes in businesses so that they are encouraged to do more training of their employees rather than expecting them to already have the training.

For those who have not been following this story closely: a debate has erupted within the Louisiana Republican Party over whether slavery was good.

An easy way to test the belief that slavery was “okay” is to ask whether the “believer” is willing to become a slave.

jaunte  May 2, 2021 • 12:45:38pm

“…Nearly six months after Trump lost to Biden, rejection of the 2020 election results — dubbed the “Big Lie” by many Democrats — has increasingly become an unofficial litmus test for acceptance in the Republican Party. In January, 147 GOP lawmakers — eight senators and 139 House members — voted in support of objections to the election results, and since then, Republicans from Congress to statehouses to local party organizations have fervently embraced the falsehood.

In Washington, normally chatty senators scramble to skirt the question, and internal feuding over who is to blame for the Jan. 6 insurrection has riven the House Republican leadership, with tensions between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the No. 3 House Republican, spilling into public view. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is facing a Trump-aligned primary challenger in her 2022 race, inspired by her call for Trump to resign after the Jan. 6 attack and her later vote to convict him over his role in inciting the insurrection.

Local officials, too, are facing censure and threats — in states from Iowa to Michigan to Missouri — for publicly accepting the election results. And in Arizona’s largest county, a hand recount of 2.1 million votes cast in November is underway by Republicans who dispute the results, in yet another effort to overturn the results of the November contest.

Back from protesting. I had a LOT of engagement today, partly because Driscoll has so many people that they can’t hardly avoid seeing me. Plus Driscoll never fixed the curb cut to get into the parking lot, it’s too small for more than one vehicle to get out. And whoever is in charge of security at Driscoll’s Circus of “Where’s Jesus?” decided to send out sign wavers to block my sign. This didn’t work out so well for them, because I have experience with Scieno Sign Tech. Also, a security team, really? REALLY?

But the leadership really didn’t want me talking to anyone. “Pastor” Carl Steele would drag away any man who walked up to me to talk to them out of my earshot about what I was saying. And yes, I taunted him about being afraid to talk to a fat, white, middle aged woman.

The *best* part for me was a 2 minute encounter I had with a neighbor who walked over to give me a bottle of water and a fig snack. She was glad to see me out there. She told me the neighborhood doesn’t like hearing the noise on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday night (!), “the parking is shit,” and Driscoll is anti-LGBTQIA. I have this video already edited and posted it to FB, but am actually making it available to someone else to post on Twitter under their account.

All in all, with the brief message, VERY SUCCESSFUL. I do think I will have to get a new GoPro with stabilization because I can’t stay still to save my life.

When I went to look it up on Find Who Calls You it had 55 look ups, which indicates to me and a lot of other people this is a number you want to block as soon as possible. It only had two complaints. The Pie Overlord!  May 2, 2021 • 1:50:39pm

I found this essay on an “Ultra-Orthodox” Jewish website, Why Did This Tragedy Happen To Us?

Very simple words.

During COVID-19 we learned to respect the space of others, to maintain a distance between us and others so we won’t infect or be infected. This taught us that each person’s space is inviolable, each person deserves his place and space. If one person impinges on another’s space he is showing disrespect to him. In a crowded situation people stand close to one another but if they respect each other, they will not push, shove, jostle or wriggle their way past others since this denies the other the space he needs.

Unfortunately on many occasions we tend not to maintain this basic requirement. At many funerals this writer has been lifted off his feet by crowds attempting to get closer to the bier. People have no compunction in pushing others out of the way in crowds, and this has become standard behavior. This must stop immediately. Already at the funeral of Rabbi Wozner there were warning signs that people are not conscious of the danger they present to others and 2 people were killed there. This should have aroused us into action but the present disaster must lead to real rethinking about how to behave in crowd situations. Crowds of any sort are dangerous, children can fall underfoot, the elderly have difficulty breathing in tight spaces, and any bottlenecks can be fatal. This is the lesson we need to learn - people deserve their kavod [respect], people deserve space.

re: #61 The Pie Overlord!

This happened at a religious pilgrimage site where, from the news reports I read, hundreds of thousands of visitors gather together on certain occasions. If it’s really like that then the site should be engineered to hell and gone to cope with the crowds and limits put on people movements and access, restricting numbers like a sports stadium or other commercial mass participation location. Respect doesn’t come into it because in a crowd no-one gives or expects respect to others.

re: #66 Nojay UK

This happened at a religious pilgrimage site where, from the news reports I read, hundreds of thousands of visitors gather together on certain occasions. If it’s really like that then the site should be engineered to hell and gone to cope with the crowds and limits put on people movements and access, restricting numbers like a sports stadium or other commercial mass participation location. Respect doesn’t come into it because in a crowd no-one gives or expects respect to others.

The site has not been engineered in the slightest. It was a disaster waiting to happen with the right series of circumstances, and officials knew that there were risks here.

In so many ways, it’s not unlike the periodic stampedes and deaths that occurred in places like Mecca/Medina during the Haj or other religious festivals where people come together in close quarters and some precipitating action results in a stampede.

The Saudis completely reconfigured both the Grand Mosque and the stoning of the devil locations multiple times to make them safer for people, but crowds are unpredictable, so you have to build that in as well.

VS Code is a wonderful tool.

One of the things I’ve seen is that when you land on a line of code it shows when it was last changed and by who, which I thought was neat - Haven’t seen that in Eclipse, wich is what IBM uses on virtually all of their mainframe DevOps tooling.

Nearly all embedded systems are written with Eclipse. Depending on the particular vendor, it ranges from OK to unusable. I developed for one board whose vendor’s implementation of Eclipse was so poor that I needed to use VSCode for stuff that Eclipse could not edit. (.h files *cough*.)

I just got one of those weather stations. This one is a LaCrosse and was a little easier to set up than my old one. So far the temps are okay and I have the time set correctly. According to the monitor the Atomic Time Signal receiver is on. From what I remember the Atomic Time Signal is sent out once a day and all clocks that are tuned to it regulate their time from that.

The receiver works once a day at local midnight, and receives at a very low frequency. You may have trouble if it’s not near a window. I had one, and it received when it felt like it—I have a bad location for any radio signal.

That’s because WWVL transmits at 60 khz, which a lot of watches and clocks use as their time source. Cellphone towers (and some hideously expensive watches) have GPS receivers and use those as their time syncs. PC’s use NTP servers.

I have a Beaglebone—an embedded device like the Raspberry Pi—with a homemade GPS board. It serves as an NTP server. I made a clock that works from NTP, two of them. I’m considering making a GPS display clock.

I have GWSL running on Windows for X support. I fire up the app in WSL and it pops up on the desktop. Right now I’m still fighting with other issues on the emulation (a lisp machine emulator for LMI Lambdas) but the display works fine. Once it’s built in it’ll be even nicer.

Wow, VScode is great. In the process of figuring out how to switch everything over. There’s an extension called Remote-SSH that lets you directly edit files on a remote server that is going to be so much easier and more powerful than BBEdit’s SFTP access. And the git support just blows BBEdit away.

One thing I was looking for and came up blank: an extension that would do a regular expression search to automatically set up bookmarks. It’s a trick I’ve used in BBEdit for a long time - just post a comment using //*, then search for that and grab the text immediately following for the bookmark label. But there doesn’t seem to be anything that does it for VScode.

I remember a similar thing happened at an AC/DC concert in Salt Lake City thirty years ago. Three teenagers died as a result of the rush to the stage during the first song and this pretty much spelled the end of general admissions and no assigned seating at concert venues here in the USA. That’s not to say the problem has gone away; in 2003, 100 people were killed in the Station nightclub fire. That was a combination of incendiary devices used in a closed environment with not enough exits when the fire started.

The Who concert disaster

WKRP in Cincinnati’s episode about the Who concert disaster at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Coliseum (“In Concert”) was a hard one to watch, but it was even harder on the show’s cast to make; it was less than three months between the incident and the airing of the episode.

Of course, CBS meddled with it some, no doubt afraid of pissing off stations and advertisers:

Before being broadcast, CBS vice president of operations Donn O’Brien told Wilson that the episode would not include the ending with a printed crawl message listing all cities in the United States to enact bylaws or pass an ordinance banning festival and unreserved seating.[2] Cincinnati was the only city listed.[2]

You know for certain that they would have killed Nancy Pelosi or AOC; they explicitly said so. These people see Democrats as the enemy of the people, and they had every intention of murdering every Democrat they could get their hands on when they broke through the barricades (or were let in; I feel the video evidence is ambivalent on this point.)
