It’s a good day when one of America’s best songwriters releases a new record, and it’s been almost seven years since James McMurtry’s last one. He just released the first song from it, and it’s outstanding.

LYRICS:
I was thinking ‘bout you, crossing Southern Alberta
canola fields on a July day
are about the same chartreuse as that sixty-nine bug
you used to drive around San Jose

you never knew where my old white Lincoln might take you
party on wheels with suicide doors
bring the kids and the dogs and your grandma too
we always had room for more
til that white knuckle ride back from Santa Cruz
second best surfer on the central coast
had you wrapped up all the way back to Los Gatos
and I could’ve cut his throat
and it wasn’t like we were an item to start with
it had no basis in fact
but the whiskey could push me to sudden extremes
I don’t want to think about that, I don’t want to think about that

(chorus)
take my hand Marie
take a death grip on some part of me
keep me from drifting far out to sea
or I’ll be lost out there

we all drifted away with the days getting shorter
seeking our place in the greater scheme
kids and careers and a vague sense of order
busting apart at the seams
I heard you switched coasts, moved in with your sister
I doubt you’d have called it familial bliss
we met up in Brooklyn before it went hipster
you carried your keys in your fist
in a way back corner of a cross town bus
we were hiding out under my hat
cashing in on a thirty year crush
you can’t be young and do that
you can’t be young and do that

(chorus)

I was thinking ‘bout you crossing Southern Alberta
canola fields at harvest time
look like tumbleweeds all raked up into rows
brown rusty contour lines
and there’s not much moving on the romance radar
not that I’m craving it all that much
but I still need to feel every once in a while
the warmth of a smile and a touch
and in a way back corner of a cross town bus
we were hiding out under my hat
cashing in on a thirty year crush
you can’t be young and do that
you can’t be young and do that

This reminds me of what we used to do at a department store I worked at in 1979—we would get on the microphone and say, “Would [name of person] please come to the personal massager section? [Name of person] to the personal massager section.” (And yes, we did have “personal massagers.”

Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during Denmark Finland game. CPR administered. Stabilized in the hospital. Soccer does kill people from time to time. 10 miles of running up and down a field over 90 minutes will sometimes uncover tiny heart imperfections ruthlessly.

Yeah, I’m going to probably have a bunch of numbnuts come after me, but frankly, “Western Civilization” is a joke.

In fact, if you compare the status of women in Europe with their status in the “big powers” of, say, the last thousand years, you’ll find that their deplorable state is better than any of the others. Particularly in the last five hundred years or so.

I used to enjoy Chipotle quite a bit. I did get sick from one, the chicken was woefully underdone (why did I continue to eat it? Because I was, if you can believe it, even dumber when I was younger) and I was violently ill for a few hours. I like the flavor of their food, but it’s not worth the risk of getting sick.

Well, unfortunately for Don. Jr’s imbecilic narrative, what the rest of the world is going to “see” with Joe Biden is an experienced public servant who knows what he’s talking about, and doesn’t want to use foreign policy mainly as:

1. A foil for appeals to xenophobic know-nothings at home, or
2. An excuse for business grift.*

A dressed hamburger is clearly a malformed prodigy that failed to become a proper kathi roll, but has retained its popularity because it rises to meet the culinary priorities of white people:

- fear of chewing
- fear of gluten
- spongelike bread composition that soaks is mayonaisse and sickly-sweet condiments
- terror of vegetables
- salted hydrogenized soybean oil is superior to other seasoning because it’s not frightening and exotic
- something, something meat consumption is masculine but also grind it into flavorless fatty paste
- some kind of deep genetic longing to become gouty as a sign of prestige
- anything brown is suspicious and must be both slathered in white sauce and surrounded by white bread.

re: #51 sagehen

if they make that a memorial, they have to do the same for the Vegas shooting site. 10x the casualties, and still motive unknown.

The motive is that he wanted to do it.

That’s unsatisfying, but it’s a valid answer. The shooter was a guy with a lot of compulsive behavior—alcoholic, gambler, pill-head—and a nonce to boot: the picture isn’t a guy who believed in something and therefore took action, it’s a guy who decided to do a thing to do a thing, with forethought and planning, because it was interesting.

Like with serial killers, mass shooters are attributed profound motives because society needs to believe that extreme behavior must be rooted in some kind of extreme first cause…but the assholes themselves enjoy glowing up their very primitive violent impulses. Even the perps that establish their “motives” beforehand, like the Unabomber, are frequently completely full of shit, garnishing basic power/control/sadism needs with baroque but flimsy theory and pseudo-psychology. Case in point being the aforementioned, who delighted in his image as brilliant and cunning (even though his bombs were terribly made and frequently killed the wrong person) and who under biographical examination had an extended history of creepy, stalker-y behavior towards women that pointed to him having issues that weren’t “philosophical” anger at the world. He was a petty, vindictive man who demanded affirmation of his intelligence and importance through terror acts and whose manifesto was pretentious overwritten sludge, but he got what he wanted…for everyone to overlook how basically small and shitty and mean he was before he ever considered his master plan.

And you can’t even necessarily believe a perp that tells their own story and explains their own motive: they’re just as capable of normal people of self-delusion, and far more capable of tweaking narratives to appeal to an audience. A lot of famous psychopaths have told multiple stories of their “motives” that contradict one another and not even blinked in the process: there’s no incentive to be honest.

Most of these people are less than meets the eye…and many of them fucking know it, too, so they gussy themselves up so they’re less boring, less squalid, less basic.

Jesse bolted out the door when I came back in around 4. No idea where she is now. There was a thunder and lightning storm going on and I’m sure she panicked. I’ve left the door open, but no sign of her yet. You stupid FUCKING cat. You could have hidden under the bed. Now I have no idea where she’s gone. Aaaannnnd…as I write this, I holler for her one more time out by the big semi trailer that is parked out in the lot off its wheels, and she comes down the hill. She did not do her usual bitching when I picked her up to bring her inside, so maybe she was more concerned than she is letting on.

she ran past me so quickly when I opened the door that I literally spent a couple of minutes in the house thinking, “Has she always just been a spirit cat?” but then I can remember hearing her grinding away on cat food at 3 in the morning, and I’m pretty sure a spirit cat would not actually need to eat 19 dollar a bag cat food.

No, spirit cats do not eat cat food. Ninja cats do, though. I know, I used to have one.

So is this “counseling” assuming the doctor who prescribed it never spoke to the patient? At all?

Unless there’s a possible cross-reaction with my other meds, my pharmacist sure the fuck doesn’t need to be second-guessing the actual board-certified physician who wrote the scrip.

Typically, after cancelling the Fedex delivery last night because they had the package on the goddamned truck for 3 days without it ever making it here, the guy showed up around 2 this afternoon to deliver it. I handed it back to him. “Nope. Not taking it. Cancelled it last night.” He sounded very sad. I wonder if he is now going to get to spend time in an office with management explaining why it took him 3 fucking days to get a package from Greenville to Clemson. Well, not my problem.
