Sadly, this is going to cause an uptick in violence and blame shifting that won’t help as we have to deal with the aftermath of what’s left. Maybe after we figure out how to survive all this and the coming pandemics. Because there are more coming. And I don’t think we’re ready or able to deal with how bad it can get. Maybe if some clever people can figure out some good ad campaigns to explain to men that covid can cause a permanent penis disability and why viagra and cialis can’t/won’t help, you might convince enough guys to talk to their buddies about it. This has to come from men to the men they know, I think that’s about the only shot some have of being reached or at least made to think. If we can get some of the more stubborn ass men on board, even if it is to save their own dicks, I am ok with that. Whatever works. And we’re gonna have to sell them on the likely needed boosters or new series of shots. Medicine has to adapt to these variants and we are going to have to follow the science to even have a chance of surviving. Whatever works. If it doesn’t, don’t do that anymore.

Take this seriously—“There is growing evidence that—for whatever reason (higher viral loads, etc)—children infected by #DeltaVariant may develop a more severe form of the disease compared to illness caused by other forms of the virus.”—it’s true.
……

This may be somewhat reminiscent of the 1918 flu — the first wave was not so devastating but the next wave was especially deadly to the young. Someone would awaken in the morning feeling fine and died by the evening, killed by a cytokine storm. Obviously, delta is not yet that quick and lethal — but the next variant could be, as long as children are not yet eligible for the vaccine. But if those eligible all were vaccinated, we could be at a turning point in vanquishing this disease.

There is another statistic that is puzzling: Illinois and Florida are the same for fully vaccinated (about 50%); the partially vaccinated are 63% vs 59%. While Illinois case numbers have risen significantly since the surge, the number of cases are still 80% below the height and deaths as low as March of 2020; why is Florida doing so much worse with cases at an all time high and deaths at 60% of the height of the last wave? Florida is also doing far worse than Texas which has lower vaccination rates. What is different about Florida?

Illinois is populated and governed by democrats. Which likely means masking and social distancing are taken seriously, as are reports about the delta variant and its dangers.

It’s also less densely populated than Florida, which may make a difference.

We should never forget that in the 1930s there was support, in the US, for the fascism in Europe, including support for Hitler.

We are a society that have deep roots in the pool from which fascism springs.

Mussolini also had many admirers in the US, including such luminaries as Thomas Edison.
In consideration of which, I am still watching the Mussolini soap opera on Amazon Prime (1985 mini-series, Mussolini-the Untold Story). I’m up to episode 4, the early part of World War II.
It’s a pretty good presentation, more than offsetting its portrayal of Il Duce as loving father and family man with an accurate, if brief, presentation of his prolific crimes and bad judgement. There are some errors in chronology, probably for the sake of narrative clarity. The death of Mussolini’s son Bruno in a plane crash is shown happening well before the outbreak of war, though in fact it happened in 1941, well after the war had started.
Sets and production values are quite good for a limited budget TV production of the time. There isn’t much variety to the sets, but some of them, like the Victor Emmanuel Monument, are the actual locations of the events portrayed.

They also have a good selection of accurately selected Italian cars and trucks of the period, apparently provided by a specialized agency. An American M-5 Stuart stands in for the only Italian tank featured in the film though.

American hardware also substitutes for period Italian aircraft, with Stearman trainers mocked up as generic recce/attack biplanes. It is pretty convincing. There is also a Soviet An-2 biplane (actually a postwar aircraft) in fascist markings in many of the airfield scenes. This is fairly convincing as a fascist era bomber/transport. In one scene, Hitler arrives in a genuine Junkers Ju-52 transport, since there were (and still are) a number of these available for movie appearances. The most interesting plane in the movie is a DC-3 mocked up to portray the Piaggio P-108 experimental bomber in which Bruno Mussolini was killed. This has a very unusual grafted-on nose section (probably fiberglass) that duplicates the P-108’s peculiar turreted, shovel-shaped nose. The plane actually flies with this prosthesis in place (CGI was nowhere good enough to fake this in 1985). It is pretty convincing despite having only 2 engines rather than 4 engines like the real P-108.

YIKES!
WebMD:

Coronavirus Lingers in Penis and Could Cause Impotence Men now have one more compelling reason to get a COVID-19 vaccine — doctors suspect the new coronavirus could make it hard to perform in the bedroom.

How? Coronavirus infection is already known to damage blood vessels, and vessels that supply blood to the penis appear to be no exception.

Researchers armed with an electron microscope found coronavirus particles in penile tissue samples taken from two former COVID-19 patients who became impotent following their infection, which had occurred six and eight months earlier.

Further study revealed evidence of blood vessel damage in the penises of the COVID-19 patients, compared to two other men with erectile dysfunction who’d never been infected, the researchers reported May 7 in the World Journal of Men’s Health.

To be fair, though, many pro-Covid dupes are already incels and would have nothing to lose.

I posted a couple days ago what Grandma told me about the 1918 flu—the first wave was bad but the second wave was far deadlier. And It targeted younger people. Grandma thinks that it didn’t hit her because there was another flu pandemic back in the 1890s that made her bedridden for a couple months.

I remember reading somewhere (I don’t remember) that the older folk were not as affected by the 1918 flu because they’d been exposed to another variety of H1N1 flu when younger. However, I cannot very quickly locate that information, and the only influenza pandemic of note during that period was an 1889-1890 pandemic that scientists first thought was H2N2, then H3N8, and now not ruling out that it could have been a coronavirus, OC43. en.wikipedia.org

ETA: doesn’t look like the 1889-1890 flu made it up to Alaska, where scientists were able to source frozen samples from indigenous villages where the dead were more frozen than decomposed.

What personally rankles me is how the white female county clerk got to walk out of the courthouse with 2 years probation because the white female judge decided that the key mitigating factor in knocking down a possible 60 year prison sentence down to 2 years probation was that the clerk cut a check for $100,000 out of the over $238,000 she’d spent decades stealing after she got caught.

Aside from my face looking like someone took hedge clippers to it, I have a nasty slash across the back of my left hand when I dropped the blade from my right.

Grandma thinks that it didn’t hit her because there was another flu pandemic back in the 1890s that made her bedridden for a couple months.

Several histories I have read of the Spanish flu pandemic mention the earlier pandemic and discuss the possibility that immunity from that episode might have protected many older people in 1918-21.
1889-1890 pandemic

In 1889-1890, a pandemic, sometimes known as the “Asiatic flu” or “Russian flu”, killed about 1 million people worldwide, out of a population of about 1.5 billion. It was the last great pandemic of the 19th century, and is among the deadliest pandemics in history. The most reported effects of the pandemic took place from October 1889 to December 1890, with recurrences in March to June 1891, November 1891 to June 1892, winter of 1893-1894, and early 1895.

It is not known what agent was responsible for the pandemic. Since the 1950s, it has been conjectured to be influenza A virus subtype H2N2. Later work suggested that the strain was possibly influenza A virus subtype H3N8. A 2005 genomic virological study says that “it is tempting to speculate” that the virus might not have been an influenza virus, but human coronavirus OC43

B-1 Bob was an odd one. He had a minor career as an actor before becoming a radio propaganda shill, appearing as Lt. Witkowski in Starfighters in 1958.

The catchline: “The blazing adventure of the men and planes who rocket to the very edge of space” and the poster showing a character with a full-face visor helmet similar to an astronaut belies the film’s very evident “infomercial” look. The majority of The Starfighters deals with the training of F-104 pilots during the period when the aircraft was being introduced in the United States Air Force, and consists predominately of stock footage. The footage was of the F-104s of the 831st Air Division (479th Tactical Fighter Wing), stationed at George AFB from October 1958.

The aircraft featured in The Starfighters included F-104A and C variants, the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, the Lockheed T-33 and the Kaman H-43B Huskie.

The film was given “the treatment” on MST-3000

You Deadbeats Expect Erick Erickson To Keep Insulting Trans People For Free? Give Him Money! (Wonkette)

Better idea: Give Little Green Footballs and Wonkette money.

Last week, Twitter suspended conservative ignoramus Allie Beth Stuckey when she called New Zealand Olympic weightlifter Laurel Hubbard a “man.” Hubbard is openly trans, and Stuckey is openly a creep.

“Laura Hubbard failing at the event doesn’t make his inclusion fair,” Stuckey wrote. “He’s still a man, and men shouldn’t compete against women in weightlifting.”

Her tweet violated Twitter’s rules against hateful conduct, which prohibit “expressing hate towards a person, group, or protected category.”

Stuckey later whined on Instagram, whose standards are apparently more lax, that “Twitter has suspended me for 12 hours for saying Laurel Hubbard is a man, which is objectively true. What’s that Orwell quote? Something about the further people get from the truth the more people will hate those who say it?”

Stuckey’s bigoted remarks are not objectively true, and I’m too damn old to even bother linking to the readily available data that disputes her. This is the 21st century, y’all. Also, Stuckey should consider hosting the quiz show, “What’s That Orwell Quote?” for conservatives who’ve never actually read any George Orwell.

Twitter goes ballistic after CNN frames a headline in a way to imply something that AOC didn’t say.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does not rule out 2022 challenge to Chuck Schumer (CNN, August 8, 2021)

She didn’t rule out being the first politician on Mars either. Eagerly awaiting that headline.

People Very Mad About Thing AOC Didn’t Actually Say, As Usual (Wonkette, by Robyn Pennacchia)

Now, I happen to agree with AOC on most things. I like her a lot. I’m not big on politician worship, but she supports things I like and seems pretty nice. I am also generally not a #TeamAnything person, except for when I am on #TeamAnyWomanCriticizedForSupposedlyWantingAttention. I despise that criticism with every bone in my body, because it’s used as a cudgel to get women to shut up and stop taking up so much space and I don’t think women should shut up and stop taking up so much space.

It’s sometimes used against men, but never with the same kind of vitriol. I don’t like it when it’s lobbed at women I dislike, either. It’s not something I want young girls to hear and absorb, I don’t want them to get the message that they should be seen and not heard.

It’s actually unfortunate that CNN chose to use the interview just to troll Democrats who hate Ocasio-Cortez, because there was another portion of it that was a lot more interesting, in which she discussed Fox News’s obsession with hating her.

“So much of what they’re doing is so visceral, right. And their job is to get at this very visceral, reactive place in people, particularly men,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “But also tap these visceral lines along race and tap along this visceral line along gender and youth.”

Ocasio-Cortez is no regular Fox viewer, but did say she will occasionally tune in to get a glimpse at how the network is trying to shape the political debates and storylines.

“I actually find it to be really, really fascinating because it reveals a lot about the subconscious of folks that are crafting these narratives,” she said. “And they very often are speaking to these very subconscious narratives about women or about people of color or about Latinos or Latinas — or about working-class people.”

And that, she added, speaks to something bigger than the outrage du jour.” These caricatures that are developed are not really personal,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “They are societal.”

Hackberry Fire (goes to Fire Weather Avalanche)

The satellite map shows the fire in relation to me.

It is now 5,778 acres (2,338 ha), burning in Banner and Morrill Counties.

It is near enough to NE-88 that it could close the highway. As of yet there are no evacuation orders for the nearest town (Redington, population 8).

In a straight line to the fire, it is about twenty-four miles from me.

123
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Aug 10, 2021 • 12:35:09am

The fire is believed to have started due to lightning.

More than twenty fire departments from Nebraska, along with additional departments from Colorado and Wyoming, are in Banner and Morrill Counties fighting the fire.

An estimated 6,000 acres is believed to have burned in the Hackberry Fire that started on Thursday, Aug. 5. Over the weekend, the fire that started in Banner County crossed into Morrill County.

“We are looking at 95% containment at this time,” Banner County Fire Chief Tim Grubbs told the Star-Herald Monday afternoon. “We have just a handful of hot spots that we are concerned with. The majority of the fire is looking very good.”

On Friday, Banner County and Region 22 Emergency Management officials submitted an emergency declaration to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which allowed for additional firefighting resources from across the state, as well as departments from Colorado and Wyoming. UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from the Nebraska National Guard, which are equipped with 780-galloon water buckets, a large airtanker out of Colorado requested through the Great Plains Dispatch Center in Rapid City, South Dakota, and the Nebraska single-engine air-tanker (SEAT) from the Nebraska Forest Service and two SEATs from South Dakota are among the equipment used to fight the fire. Grubbs said that heavy equipment from Banner County, Scotts Bluff County Road Departments and Nebraska Department of Transportation has also been utilized to help establish containment lines throughout the fire.

I believe that’s a 3 inch M-1903 field gun, the US Army’s first nickel steel QF gun with recoil mechanism. During World War I, there weren’t nearly enough of these, so US troops primarily used the famous French 75mm gun. Some of the ’03s were built with, or converted to, 75mm barrels so they could fire the same ammunition.
With canister shot, it would be ideal for putting the fear of God into ammosexual goober militia. Just a thought.

Omaha Public Schools board gives middle finger to Gov. Ricketts. OPS is the largest school district in the state.

OPS board votes to require masks inside schools (Omaha World-Herald)

The Omaha Public Schools will join a growing number of Nebraska school districts requiring students to wear masks indoors when they return to classrooms next week.

The same for teachers and parents, though there will be some exceptions.

School board members voted Monday to require all people to wear masks indoors at school, effective Tuesday.

Students won’t have to wear them outdoors, so not for recess or activities like marching band. Students will be allowed remove the masks while eating and drinking.

If teachers or staff are alone in their classrooms or offices, they will be allowed to unmask.

The resolution adopted by the board also allows people to go without a mask “when doing so creates a greater health, safety or security risk to the individual or public.”

The vote was 8-1. One wingnut wanted a sunset provision in it. That was rejected.

“We didn’t think that we would get here,” she said. “We were hopeful that we wouldn’t get here. But, alas, here we are today considering this one week from the start of school.”

Gov. Pete Ricketts has said schools should not require masks.

The OPS resolution made note of the July 27 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommending universal masking for all teachers staff, students and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status.

—-

Before the mandate was voted on, almost two dozen people testified at the board’s special meeting. Some parents said they worried about sending their children back to school without a mandate. Others said the decision to wear a mask should be left with parents. Several pediatricians testified that masks would be essential to blunting spread of the delta variant.

What’s burning here is ranchland and farms. Prairie fires are scary, because they can move several miles with a stiff wind and dry vegetation.

Last year there was a fire northwest of there, in the Wildcat Hills. It burned through parkland, destroying many trees and camping areas.

That fire was difficult to fight due to the rugged nature of the area. The fire was attributed to a pickup truck dragging a chain over a cattle guard, which sparked in the dry grass.

Honestly, AOC would be better off challenging Gillibrand for her seat and contrasting someone who has stood by friends even when they faced “controversy” versus a woman who threw her own colleague under the bus to advance her (vain, hopeless) chances at the presidency.

American Girl Shutters Business After Doing All The Types of Girls (The Onion, August 9, 2021)

MIDDLETON, WI—Having completed what it set out to do when it launched its line of dolls 35 years ago, American Girl announced Monday it had halted all production and shuttered its retail locations after determining it had done all the types of girls. “Rich girl, poor girl, black girl, white girl—as far as I can tell, we’ve done every iteration of girl, so now seems like the right time to call it quits,” CEO Barbarella Coates said of the upscale toy brand, which typically charges $150 or more for dolls that have reportedly included such types as a horseback-riding girl, an aspiring-gymnast girl, a girl who’s into fashion, a girl who uses a wheelchair, a girl who’s an only child, a blue-haired skater girl, an animal-lover girl, and all the other kinds of girls.

Millard is an area in western Omaha, originally platted in 1870. It used to be an independent city, but was incorporated into Omaha in 1971. As part of that deal, it retained control over its own school district. So if you live in that part of Omaha, your children do not go to Omaha Public Schools, they go to Millard Public Schools.

Millard operates twenty-five elementary schools, six middle schools, and four high schools.

Some of the other school districts out here in the Panhandle:

Bayard (the other side of the county) is seeking public input or reopening criteria. They have not yet had a board meeting to determine when they will open.

Scottsbluff Public Schools adopted an emergency plan, where face coverings are based on the assessed risk in the city from Panhandle Public Health District. Distance learning was discontinued.

Gering (seat of Scott’s Bluff County) just launched a Website, so it is not updated with information I can access. There is no information in the Gering Courier I can find.

Alliance (seat of Box Butte County) reversed their decision and adopted a mask mandate after a Change dot Org petition was launched and picked up by the local press.

Chadron (Seat of Dawes County) not only adopted a mask mandate, but circulated mail and put on their Website instructions on how to wear, remove, or wash masks.

Banner County Public School (in Harrisburg, pop. 100) was the first school district to give Gov. Ricketts the middle finger last year. Despite the county being on fire, they found the time to do that again this year.

Sidney (seat of Cheyenne County) Public Schools rejected mask mandates for this school year in July. Sidney is full of wingnuts, and the mayor of Sidney has appeared on Tucker Carlson’s White Power Hour in the past.

Sadly all the school districts here in VA have either already voted or are planning to vote to make masks optional when schools return back to in-school lessons next month. So I fully expect to spend another school year hearing about outbreaks left and right, followed closely behind by mass quarantines and “temporary” closures for cleaning/sterilizing.

A workaround for Panhandle Public Health District degrading the Covid-19 dashboard.

A change to the way data related to COVID cases is affecting multiple counties in the Panhandle, leading Panhandle Public Health District to cease maintaining a risk dial.

According to a press release from COVID-19 Unified Command, as of July 30, county-specific data about the coronavirus will only be reported in counties with populations of 20,000 or more.

“We understand this is frustrating and disappointing and we are working at alternative ways to inform the public,” said Kim Engel, Panhandle Public Health District Director. “We also understand that many sectors of our communities rely heavily on the risk dial to determine which preventive steps should be taken. Our hope is that plans can still be developed with the new solution.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID Data Tracker still shows some Panhandle counties being at a high risk for community transmission. People may locate the tracker online at covid.cdc.gov.

There are court cases here right now trying to pry the information out of the state.

Perhaps they are using the CDC information, which is suspect.

PPHD notes they are only reporting on counties with 20,000 or more people. That’s one county (Scott’s Bluff).

The quote, “The man who has no sense of history is like a man with no ears or eyes,” was displayed by a staff member in an eighth-grade hallway on a marker board, said Brandi Paul, a spokeswoman for Westside Community Schools.

re: #23 Hecuba’s daughter

And it’s only going to get worse as red states that haven’t already forced kids back into crowded classrooms with no masks do so because schools in this country are simply glorified daycare centers paid for by taxpayers so that businesses don’t have to shell out the money to provide such benefits to their workers.

My university just sent out boilerplate language stating all students must be masked, properly, in class, and any not properly masked are to be sent off and counted absent for the day. We wouldn’t have to do this if more than 50% of the state was vaccinated and people had worn the damned mask.

No, there’s like 5 or 6 different base strains of influenza virus, and the “seasonal flu” winds up being whichever one mutates in such a way as to beat the existing base immune response in most humans and require a vaccination. Sometimes it’s more than one, which is why we get seasons where the flu shot is less effective. There’s hope that an mRNA flu vaccine might be effective against many variants, which would quash “flu season” as a thing altogether… if we can convince people to take it.

The UK’s epidemiological modellers, the ones trying to mathematically figure out what happens next with COVID-19, are predicting a Flu Season From Hell this winter due in part to the travel restrictions, social distancing and mask-wearing that occurred last year when influenza basically didn’t happen. There’s nothing in theory that would prevent someone being infected with COVID-19 and influenza at the same time, of course. This would be a Bad Thing.

The UK’s NHS is planning to inoculate at least 80% of the population against influenza this year rather than their usual approach of specifically providing inoculations to older folks and specifically vulnerable people via the health services and allowing others to get vaccinated at pharmacies etc. if they wish. We’ll see how it goes.

I am planning on getting the flu shot again this year, as I did last year. I may already be inoculated against COVID, but Delta is a serious disease, and I have no desire to open myself to any more risk than I need to. I have a feeling COVID + influenza is going to be an extremely deadly combo.

I expect going forward that influenza may get a mRNA vaccination that does a better job preventing the annual flu and doesn’t rely on current production practices and guestimates by experts about what variants will be prevalent in a given year. Once that happens, we’d probably see a combo vaccination for covid and influenza.

I’m down for that.

So political hack Patrick Ruffini is poo poohing the worries by those who are vaccinated and remasking mandates affecting everyone.

Um… a guy who is a political hack and isn’t a health expert has thoughts.

Let’s dissect them, shall we?

There’s no way for people to tell difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated. It’s all a honor system, and it’s clear that the unvaccinated have no intention of masking either, so it’s all or nothing. In GOP strongholds, that means no one masking and no masking mandates (even where localities are imposing mandates, GOP governors are trying to stop them by any means necessary).

There’s a reason I’m incandescent with rage at those who aren’t vaccinating and encouraging others not to vaccinate or mask - from Fox on down.

It’s not just that I care that people can avoid getting covid19 and spreading it in the community.

It’s not just that I care that people don’t end up hospitalized in an ICU or die, leaving family members with massive health care bills.

It’s not just that these people are sociopaths who don’t care about anyone else, including their own families.

It’s that their actions directly impact absolutely everyone else, regardless of whether you’re vaccinated or not.

Just watch hospital bed utilization rates. As ICUs get packed with covid19 cases, which usually take more resources and time to clear, there are fewer beds for everyone else.

People don’t just stop having heart attacks, strokes, and all the other ailments that result in need for a hospital bed or ICU. They don’t just stop having car crashes. Where do all the gun violence victims get beds to recover from their grievous injuries if the beds are filled with covid19 patients?

That’s right - they don’t get those beds. All health care is impacted. Quality of care drops, and more people die. There are more complications because people who would go to the hospital for care in emergency situations find themselves in even worse shape. Or once they get to hospitals, they have long waits in ERs or hallways waiting for beds to open - knowing that the bed opens in an ICU often because a covid19 patient dies.

Or, if the hospitals are completely overwhelmed, as many of them are all around the South, you are transported to hospitals in neighboring towns, cities, or even to other states (all at your cost).

So yeah, I’m pissed at these selfish sociopathic know nothings who get their news from Fox and social media and think that their online research about vaccines somehow found that they’re dangerous when actual experts say that they’re safe and knowing that hundreds of millions of doses have been administered in the US with minimal side effects and serious harms, while actual covid19 kills and incapacitates with alarming regularity.

Severe inflammation damages the walls of blood vessels throughout the body. The comments above got me to looking on the google, and I read an article where they examined samples of tissue from four men getting penile implants - 2 w/Covid and 2 w/out. The two with Covid had major vessel wall damage. It’s only two, but 100% of the sample set versus the control pair.

Fuck anti-vaxxers, man.

Health workers in Texas and nearby states have struggled with a lack of intensive-care beds, said Rhiana Ireland, an emergency-room doctor who is herself struggling with what she believes is a breakthrough case.

Ireland described spending hours unsuccessfully trying to find a bed for a 22-year-old southeast Texas patient, hunting as far away as Colorado, North Dakota and Montana. All she could provide him was oxygen and steroids because her hospital lacks remdesivir or monoclonal antibodies.

“I know what he needs, but I can’t do it,” she said.

Ireland said she and her colleagues are not only exhausted, but frustrated by knowing that vaccines could have headed off the new surge. “It feels like this is worse” than December, Ireland said as she coughed and struggled to breathe, using an inhaler.

Nationwide, hospital utilization is expected to rise further in coming weeks, according to projections from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and there are already too few people to care for patients.

Walsh is the kind of guy who thinks that getting a preventable disease is a mark of strength or somehow a badge of honor.

Why the fuck would anyone want to get sick? Being sick sucks. Getting covid19 sucks. It sucks even worse if you’re hospitalized, or get intubated, or die.

Because that’s more likely if you’re unvaccinated than if you are. You also reduce spread to others and if enough people are vaccinated, you can eliminate the spread to the point where it’s safe to resume normal activities without masks or distancing.

Other diseases aren’t communicable like covid19, but they suck just as fiercely if you get them.

Vaccination prevents the harms and economic losses for parents caring for kids too - no need to take sick days for chicken pox if you’re vaccinated. Don’t have to worry about measles or polio either. Or smallpox. We can functionally eradicate diseases that used to ravage the population.

We’re even closer to vaccinations that can deal with malaria - one of the big global killers. These are good things that help improve health, safety, and improve economic outputs.

Yeah, I’m framing it as economic benefits, because that’s how these know nothing sociopaths view everything - it’s a cost or a benefit, and the costs of not vaccinating are far higher than vaccinating.

Greenland resources are more likely to be exploitable if the ice sheet that covers it is greatly reduced by man made global warming. It facilitates further exploration and exploitation.

I’d rather focus on the spoils piles at mines here in the US and around the world that have rare earth elements (which aren’t all that rare), but weren’t considered important when mining for copper or other precious metals at the time.

And by going into those spoils piles, we can also help restore those environments without doing new damage elsewhere.

It’s not complicated, the filings are cut and paste. “On [paste date], the defendant [Rudy Maria Sidney Onan etc] said [insert quote] during [broadcast]. September 17th will come and go and the QAssholes will move the goalposts again…will it be Veterans Day…Maybe Thanksgiving…Or Christmas…Or New Years…bet it won’t be moved to Dr. King’s birthday! 😏

i dont know if its actually intentional or not - probably not because it means losing a huge megaphone. tfg certainly didnt foresee when it happened to him and he’s mostly if not totally stifled - shadow people accounts (above) notwithstanding.

meanwhile it’s taking the courts 4 years already and maybe one more to finally declare that ‘shall’ means ‘shall’ w/r/t tfg’s tax returns.

yet another hearing in november
then the inevitable appeal
then scotus

all for an unqualified ‘shall furnish’ any return, no qualifications or reasons necessary.

Meanwhile, I see that Cuomo resigned. A couple weeks late, but absolutely necessary. At the same time…it’s a reminder that consequences only matter when it comes to Dems. If Cuomo was a Republican, no doubt he’d be allowed to skate on by with zero consequences, and that makes this resignation, as necessary as it is, another bitter reminder of where things lay around this country.

I never quite viewed it that way since I discovered that looking at some of my coding six months later it’d take a bit of time to catch back up on why I was doing some things the way I had done them.

So I tended to leave documentation or comments indicating what I was trying to accomplish in that section. Plus generally a file or two describing tricky bits of a support procedure, who to talk to if there was a a problem, and expected maintenance cycles. I wore 4-5 hats at my last job and there was no local expertise for a few of things I did. A year after I was laid off I still got phone calls on my cell from the company that did some of the HVAC maintenance for us.

There are 2 infrastructure bills. This is the smaller one that received bipartisan support. The much larger one can only be passed through reconciliation and requires the support of Ms Airhead. It would be ideal if that larger one also passes and then both become law. I do have to say that if somehow the larger bill fails because it does not get the 50 Democrats for support it would still be wise for the smaller bill to become law. A smaller bill is better than no bill. If not, then Democrats will be dead for 2022 since the argument would be that Democrats can’t get anything through even though they control both houses.

Anything could be used as a kinetic weapon, provided it has sufficient mass and shape to make it through the atmosphere intact. There even are at least plans for next-generation kinetic weapons, where you have control surfaces on the kinetic projectile helping it to hit its target.

One reason why militaries like the concept of kinetic weapons is that the area of damage a single kinetic projectile causes is very limited. However, there is the question of getting them to orbit and/or launching them at sufficient speed to be scary things on impact.

A kinetic weapon dropped from orbit would be very energetic; its deceleration through the atmosphere would determine how energetic. The real concern, to me, is guidance; the main reason space re-entry has been so accurate is because it is guided, whether by a cleverly written computer program or by a human hand behind the controls. Without control, entry from orbit is basically an artificial meteor, which is part of the reason why they give such fuzzy targets when space debris that is uncontrolled eventually enters the atmosphere for the final time.

Illegally as in jail time illegally? Or is Abbott above the law?

He’s a white, conservative guy in Texas. Therefore, above the law.

No, I don’t think you’re over the line at all. I’ve been telling these fuckers for quite a while to look up Julius Streicher: “Follow his path, share his fate.”

Yep. Personally, I think it was ripped off from Heinlein’s The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress story. Except instead of titanium rods, they threw actual rocks.

That’s the earliest reference to the concept I’m familiar with. The book is from 1966.
The other references posted here seem to be from much later.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s scientifiction from much earlier with the concept, before SciFi was a thing.

re: #367 Michele: Recovering Social Media Addict

Thanks. Don’t know why the hell I did that. I just finished reading the article. *sigh*
Either way, they seem to be a popular SciFi weapon of mass destruction. The Centauri used mass drivers against the Narn Home world, The Kodan used meteors against the Star League, and well you get the point.

I don’t think people REALLY took throwing rocks at a planet seriously until Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke up into pieces and collided with Jupiter. Granted, Jupiter is a gas giant, but those very small (compared to Jupiter) chunks of comet left visible holes in the gaseous atmosphere.

Shoemaker-Levy 9 also served as a great example of how a good-sized rock (see Chicxulub impactor) could wreak havoc on a planet. *actually old enough to remember when the Alvarez father and son team proposed the demise of the dinos via asteroid and how people thought they were crazy and saying Luis Walter Alvarez, a physicist, was out of his lane.*

Just booked my first flying vacation - going to Kauai for a week and then a few days in Waikiki for shits and giggles - plus it’s a fun surf break there. Managed to shave 2500 off our flight by changing SFO-HNL-LIH-HNL-SFO to OAK-LIH-HNL-SFO. Just have to get a ride to Oakland for the trip out - and the neighbor already offered.

I got a shot of a family crossing the river last weekend down at my watering hole.

That rock is not naturally a green color, we paint it that way and use it to gauge how high the river is :-)

Oath Keeper destroyed evidence from Capitol insurrection in backyard ‘burn pit’: Feds

Thomasville woman charged in Capitol riots accused of destroying evidence in ‘burn pit’

Laura Steele, the ex-cop and member of militia group the Oath Keepers, is facing new charges.

The Thomasville woman now faces additional charges of civil disorder and aiding and abetting for “impeding and interfering” with law enforcement officers who were preventing the rioters from entering the Senate chambers.

Additionally, Steele is now charged with tampering with documents for allegedly using a burn pit in her back yard to destroy evidence of her involvement in the riot, including the clothes she and others were wearing.

re: #404 Backwoods_Sleuth

this has the possibility of being a GOP wet dream in MSM idiocy… what I believe has been stated…

We have the Bipartisan infrastructure Bill (1.5T) supported by the GOP and the Dems in the Senate - Nancy Smash has stated that she will NOT bring this bill up in the House for a vote until……

The Dem only Infrastructure bill which is 3.5T which needs to be passed via reconcilliation and can only be handled that way because of GOP reasons gets to the Senate floor to be voted on, which the GOP has stated that they have every intention of filibustering… so if that does not pass the Senate, it never reaches the House for a vote (which Nancy Smash has stated that she WILL pass THIS bill first if it reaches her).

Biden has indicated a willingness to pass both bills…

the first Bill is what I would call a HARD infrastructure bill, roads, bridges, dams, waste-water management, electrical grid infrastructure

the second Bill is a soft infrastructure bill in that it recognizes that social services upgrades are just as important as building stuff, it involves training programs, education grants, research grants, incentives for urban farming, recycling, clean air and water, and expansion upon the HARD with charging stations, rail improvements, energy integration solutions. All the forward thinking innovative stuff blown up from local to trying to put it in play nationally.

What could happen…. we get one Infrastructure bill passed and the Dems shoot their own feet and nothing gets done in the House due to both bills not passing and the GOP continues claims that government is broken and that WILL be the media framing brought to life.

And the Democrats would deserve that framing if they allow the hard infrastructure bill to fail because the other one doesn’t pass.

agreed, were more or less betting on the Senator from NY knowing what he’s doing or he’s sure that he’s secured the 50 needed to get it to Harris.

and we also get an idea on if Sinema and Manchin were just blowing smoke seeking the spotlight or if they’re on board with what needs to be done.

Very much hoping the latter and if so, the next item is to pivot to the VRA and get that done.

Actually they were called Rods From God.

And they were a really stupid idea. The energy you need to put the rods into orbit, and drop them out of orbit is vastly superior to the energy needed to just drop a bomb on your target.

They’re also ridiculously vulnerable to attack.

Here’s another bit of crazy from Owen Strachan.

His first statement is wrong, because he seems to think there is a binary in sexes, but we know from biology that’s simply untrue.

Scripture trumps reality.

Heinlein’s idea was launching things from a shallow gravity well to a deep gravity well, gaining the difference between them in kinetic energy.

Pournell’s idea is to launch things from a deep gravity well to orbit, then deorbit them. It’s incredibly expensive. Just use artillery, ballistic missiles, or FOBS if you insist.
