The swallowtail caterpillars who I posted a picture of the other day munching on parsley have reduced the plant to a few stalks and most have apparently left looking for greener pastures.

I told the neighbor that if I went grocery shopping I could pick some parsley up to give them an additional supply.

She just sort of chuckled. There were only two on the remains of the plant at the time from the original eight or nine. Not sure where the others had gone since IIRC the various swallowtail species are sort of picky about what they eat. This particular kind like both parsley and dill. I think the native species in the area they feed on is Queen Anne’s Lace, which is not uncommon but doesn’t grow much in close proximity to the apartments. (Gobs of it along the Schuylkill as I recall from my walks when I lived in Center City.)

Well, ever since Reagan said, “The scariest words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help,’” a number of folks have decided destroying the government is their life’s goal.

And with certain people in politics and media egging them on that number has grown.

So here we are.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves let out some frustrations during a Thursday press conference on the state’s COVID-19 response.

Reeves again stressed he will not be issuing a mask mandate.

“I do not give a damn about any political agenda,” he said. He says people on the right want him to politicize vaccines and masks and people on the left want to “grow their Twitter platform” by suggesting he should enact “mandate after mandate.”

The press conference came as Mississippi’s hospital systems are inundated with patients.

With thousands of new cases each day, Mississippi has been one of the areas most impacted by the Delta variant’s surge.

Last week, Reeves said the state is “calmly dealing” with the issue. He also mapped out plans to have additional healthcare workers in place in the state.

Reeves admitted hospitals are struggling, but offered hope that more vaccinations could turn things around.

“In the last month, 89% of our hospitalizations and 87% of our deaths have occurred amongst the unvaccinated,” Reeves said.

He says despite mild side effects, vaccines are very effective at preventing serious disease and death.

More Mississippians are getting vaccinated in response to the Delta variant. Vaccinations are higher than they have been at any point since April, Reeves says.

The need for testing is also increasing. More testing centers have opened across the state, including at Trustmark Park in Pearl.

He says he’s willing to give local governments every tool they need to keep schools open.

“We know there will be outbreaks and there will be quarantines. This is the nature of an airborne virus,” he said.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says the state is very fortunate to see an increase in vaccinations.

“People are recognizing how important that is for surviving not only COVID but the Delta surge,” Dobbs said.

Dobbs also preaches the use of monoclonal antibody treatment in patients with COVID. He signed a statewide executive order for monoclonal antibodies to be given by nurses and clinics without having to go through the health department.

MEMA Director Stephen McCraney says officials have been handing out supplies like youth masks and hand sanitizer to schools across the state in an effort to keep things open.

A friend of mine who had been exposed earlier this week had to go to SIX different locations to even get tested because none of the first five had any tests left. It’s a fucking mess down here.

An enhanced version of Quake came out today. It’s on Gamepass on PC and Xbox, and on several other consoles.

It’s so primitive. Blocky graphics at 120fps, and very simple enemy logic.
It was huge fun when it first came out.
Playing this evening, I still remember where at least some of the hidden stashes are.

My niece is among the unvaccinated. Back when the CDC announced that the vaxed could go maskless, and Biden tweeted about it, she said it was awful that our “President” (her use of quotes) was dividing us this way.

Imagine my shame - having worked in BioPharma for 40 years, most of it in Infectious Disease, and a lot of that in vaccines particularly, to have my niece, who sells used cars, tell me she thinks the vaccine “haven’t been tested enough”.

Vaccines should be mandated because used car salespeople think they have sufficient expertise to decide for themselves.

The problem is that redcaps are completely untrustworthy — the moment you say “no vax needed if you have natural immunity” then they will just lie about their prior infection and/or start whining if an antibody test is used to verify (if it’s even capable of verifying prior infection with sufficient accuracy).

The bottom line is that vaccine refusal and “hesitancy” in white conservatives is driven exclusively by the kind of willful stupidity that must be opposed at every opportunity, since if it is accommodated it just festers and grows into a larger problem.

Honestly, I’ve been wondering how long it would be before the MAGAts started insisting that COVID was a bioweapon created by the “Deep State” to wipe them out.

People like Lin Wood can’t handle the truth.

The truth is that the covid bug is just a virus — anyone can get it, anyone can die from it.

Another truth is that there are only two things normal citizens can do to help themselves and others in this pandemic — masking + social distancing, and getting vaccinated.

A harder truth for the Lin Woods of the world is that they are members of a sociopathic cult which has latched onto anti masking and antivaxxing as a core political identity, based on spite, malice and wanting to oppose anything liberals say, do or suggest.

Yeah, but now they’re slowly starting to move towards conspiracy theories that they’re being singled out, and there’s not much of a leap from there to believing that the conspiracy theory now is that medical workers are being ordered to execute wingnuts and cover it up by blaming it on COVID.

re: #104 Blind Frog Belly White

I wonder whether Wood actually believes what he’s saying, or is this just part of his grift. If he does, that guy’s brain is a bag of squirrels.

I not sure it matters any more.

Sincerity and falseness aren’t really poles; people have base assumptions, then invent beliefs that fit their base assumptions with the full knowledge they’re fabricating, but then they repeat the fabrication enough they view their own falsehood as authentic. And it gets even more complicated than that when you look at the multiple forms of epistemology that a person can use to evaluate a thought. A lot of people see something as intuitively or emotionally true—it feels true to them—and then construct
“proofs” that resemble more concrete forms of episteme.

And as an observer it takes time and effort to divine the immovable parts of another person’s thought process—the base assumptions that don’t waver—and those foundational beliefs often aren’t even case-specific. Many people first assumption is that they can’t be wrong, and that people that disagree have to be malicious…and then everything after that is just a long string of improvisations and cold readings to defend that starting point.

So with a soup brain like Lin Wood he could start out a liar, convince himself it’s true because he needs it to be true because the alternative is the ego-wound of being wrong, but then circumstances require a new “truth” to protect those base assumptions so he changes his mind and authentically defend a new position. It’s the ship of Theseus but made entirely of awfulness and vanity.

Banks: OnlyFans, we would like to give you all the money, as opposed to the mere a great deal of money, but there’s just one problem with your business plan that’s deterring investors.

OnlyFans: Tell us. Being porn landlords just hasn’t made us all the money, and that’s the only thing that matters.

Banks: Well…your pornographic site has too much pornography on it.

OnlyFans: Come again? Hopefully context indicates that’s not a literal command.

Banks: Look, this is a reputable institution and it’s not like you’re a shell company moving money Russian mobsters make from actually selling women, or a dictator’s slush account. Dick and pussy adjacent money is fungibly dirty.

OnlyFans: Pardon?

Banks: Your site is nasty. Nasty money has hidden liabilities that venture capitalists find unappealing. [consults chart] See here? Nasty money is indexed as worth far less money than fake cancer cure money or stolen from exploded peasants money. It’s a bad risk. Can’t tarnish our reputation.

OnlyFans: So in this entirely rational economic system the valuation of our company that derives entirely from the cut we get from sales on porn…but we would be worth more if there was no porn?

Banks: Obviously. You would be worth all the money. Exactly like video game companies: the more you do video games the worse you’re an investment. Do less video game per video game and you can make all the money, forever.

OnlyFans: So how do we do this? After all, we do want all the money.

Banks: Currently you’re sitting at balls nasty, and we need to get you down to merely slightly nasty.

OnlyFans: Look, this is confusing but perhaps we can meet you halfway and merely be hella nasty.

Banks: Nope, as you can see on this chart hella nasty stymies growth by 70% per quarter.

OnlyFans: Thanks for the advice, this makes perfect sense. Clearly consumers, who are perfectly rational actors as we all know because that is the basic assumption of all classic economic theory, will appreciate when we remove their ability to purchase explicit material from our site that exists primarily as a marketplace of custom explicit material.

Tumblr got delisted from the App store because Apple claimed to have found child porn images, so they went with the nuclear option and just deleted all adult content.

And Pornhub basically went “Library of Alexandria” to its own archives when the CC companies and banks accused them of hosting child porn and rape videos, promising that only videos from “verified” accounts could be posted going forward.

Disappointed Taliban Realizes Taking Over Afghanistan More Fun Than Running It

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN—Following the terrorist organization’s rapid recapture of the Central Asian country, a disappointed Taliban informed reporters Wednesday that taking over Afghanistan had turned out to be way more fun than running it. “Obviously, storming the smaller cities and plowing toward the capital was a total blast, but now that we actually have to govern this place, it’s actually kind of a slog,” said Taliban supreme commander Haibatullah Akhundzada, describing his shock at how much of a “drag” it was to administer an impoverished country without any functioning infrastructure or durable goods that had been ravaged by two decades of warfare. “I became a terrorist to terrorize—to detonate IEDs and shoot rocket launchers at American tanks. If you had told me that instead I’d be spending most of my time trying to develop a unified national identity around fragmented tribal communities spread out over thousands of miles of mountainous terrain, I never would have signed up. Now I get why America wanted no part of this.” At press time, the Taliban decided to give up on governing and just enjoy killing people instead.

Memories of a discussion with someone who was part of the process — Boeing got “into space” by buying Hughes Aircraft Corporation which didn’t build aircraft any more but boy could they build spacecraft, usually for spook reasons (see also Glomar Challenger etc.). Boeing decided that commercial aircraft manufacturing processes, materials and engineering would work for spacecraft so they fired all the nitpickers and fussbudgets they inherited from HAC because they were impacting the financial bottom line. The result (predictably) was a decade and more of dismal failures on the launch pad and in orbit. This fuckup seems to be more of the same, unfortunately.

I think you mean McDonnell-Douglas. Hughes as a whole was never part of Boeing. The Hughes parent company, Summa, sold Hughes Helicopters Inc. to McDonnell-Douglas in 1984 and that division passed to Boeing when it took over MD in 1997. Boeing had been involved in space for many years by then. They built the first stage for the Saturn V, for example.
Most of Hughes remaining aerospace operations stayed with Summa until they were bought at auction by Raytheon in 1985. Boeing was one of the failed bidders. Hughes Space remained independent however. Boeing finally acquired control of Hughes Space in 2000.
The notoriously ruthless bean counters and their corporate culture were famously brought over from MD at the time of the 1997 merger. This was more involved with aircraft than space (see 737 MAX), but their dire influence does indeed seem to have bled over into the space operation.

It sucks harder to have a judge who insists the psycho has to actually kill or injure you to be taken seriously.

Wait a second! Weren’t they going with the rise in cases in Texas was due to Covid infected undocumented immigrants surging into the country from Mexico? What changed their mind????

And may their platform burn to the ground for doing it.

On the issue of helicopters and attack aircraft falling into the hands of the Taliban: How many pilots do they have? How many mechanics do they have? Where do they get parts?

On the issue of radio communications equipment falling into Taliban hands: There is nothing secret about radio, and at least when I worked in ECM and such, you would put your life at risk to destroy those particular pieces of equipment or manuals before allowing them to be captured.

It’s a very common practice, especially for white folks but that depends on the judge. The basic idea is that many people don’t want more trouble and shame will keep them in line. But then you have nuts like her.

It’s a “flood the zone” thing.

You’re not trying to convincing sell any one lie, you’re just creating a cloud of emotional discharge that your audience participates in because the alternative is choices have consequences.

I suspect that most, if not all, of the airworthy planes and choppers have absconded to Pakistan. I saw a pic of the Taliban showing off a captured A-29 attack aircraft. The text said they had exactly one of these. The Afghan AF reportedly had 19 of them before the collapse.
Much the same happened with the much larger South Vietnamese Air Force during the collapse in 1975, though many planes and especially choppers stayed. The Royal Thai Air Force subsequently equipped whole squadrons with escaped VNAF aircraft. The most famous such aircraft is in the US, though: The Cessna O-1 Bird Dog that Major Bung-Ly landed aboard the carrier USS Midway after cramming his wife and 5 children into the nominal 2-seater and escaping from Cong Son Island. He had never seen an aircraft carrier before. The aircraft is on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

i^i = (-1)^(i/2) = (e^(iπ))^(i/2) = e^(iiπ/2) = e^(-π/2)

Writing that out on the phone was painful.

Biggest death toll Texas today since the end of March for COVID.

And it will be worse tomorrow and tomorrow and next week and next week.

If the US won’t require jabs, the State’s should. If they don’t, shut down all Federal monies to them.

(I know, it’s a bulkshite wish, but I want to see the Executive try it and see if the State’s either see it through the Courts or cave.)

Pattern of escalation could have easily justified a higher bail.

re: #129 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Beau is probably correct.

Much of the equipment is available commercially.

Most of the rest is similar to what every organized military in the world already has. Plus, it will be hard for an untrained, irregular and illiterate peasant army run by a bunch of neo-medieval religious fanatics to use it correctly, and maintain and get spare parts for.

The biggest worry is likely to be equipment that the Afghan National Army would not likely have had in the first place, such as ManPads. (Man portable air defense systems, like the 1980’s stingers.)

It will be interesting to see how much of the stuff is still running in 10 years.
