Just rummaging through this thread is a thing worth doing, because people are talking about their experiences with trying to find jobs in this economy where there are allegedly so many jobs available.

I’d note that the local McDonalds is offering $14/hour (based on a flyer shoved into my bag yesterday), which is more than the $12.15 state mandated minimum wage, but nowhere near enough to live on, obviously. Not when apartment rents for one bedroom apartments are well over $1,000/month out here in Mesa (one of the boring Phoenix suburbs). It’s INSANE.

The bank is starting people out at $16.32/hour as tellers. Still not enough, but they’ve been pushed upwards from the $15 they said they were paying earlier this year. I am not saying that being a teller is a better job than flipping burgers, just that it pays more. There are different stresses, however.

Re: Columbus Day

This started in 1892 as a one-time proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison for the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival.

The proclamation was part of a wider effort after the (New Orleans) lynching incident to placate Italian Americans and ease diplomatic tensions with Italy.

Italian-Americans and recent immigrants were being subjected to waves of discrimination and often actual violence during this period. Additionally US industry in general and various midwestern interests were promoting the enormous Columbus themed World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago,

Colorado was the first state to make it a permanent holiday, in 1907. It became a federal holiday in 1934.

Good tune. Nice use of a bender in the main figure, and his tone is always excellent.

In other news - my wife and I have always been fascinated by the sport of curling for some reason. So tonight we’re joining a NY Adventure Club outing to the Ardsley Curling Club for a short (2 hour) curling lesson lesson.

I’m interested in the physics of it, but more mystified about how they score it. Should be interesting.

NYAC is a cool outfit. They always find really interesting shit to do. A couple of years ago we went to a place called Trapeze World in Queens and swung on the trapeze for a couple of hours. My wife got video of me swinging, she probably still has it somewhere in case she needs to blackmaIl me. :)

As a GOP fatcat, West is almost certainly vaxxed, even as he preaches mass suicide to the lemmings. It’s hard to tell, though. It seems that you have to be pretty far up the GQP pecking in order to be fully in on the scam. Look at poor Sam Brownback. He was an actual governor, yet he truly, sincerely believed in trickle down economics. Slashed taxes to bring in new business and watch the revenue roll in, as promised by Saint Reagan and generations of Austrian school econo-shamans. Instead public services collapsed and many companies fled the state as a result.

It’s always nice to see a stolen guitar make it back home.

The craziest part of the story - the guy who had the guitar wanted one just like it before he’d give up Randy’s guitar - and Randy found one that was built in the same week. Talk about a needle in a haystack!

I remembered this story from a few years ago, but not many of the details. Google did the rest.
Stolen ‘64 Chevrolet Corvette Returned to Owner after 40 Years

In 1976, Modesto Fleming’s C2-generation 1964 Chevrolet Corvette was stolen while she was living in Anaheim, California. At the time, the police were unable to track down her car, and she believed the Vette was gone forever. And that was indeed the case until this October, when Fleming got her car back thanks to Dave Madrigal, a California Highway Patrol officer in the northern California town of Red Bluff, and quite a bit of luck.
Earlier this year, the then owner took the 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray to a local car show. As the Red Bluff Daily News reported, someone at the show with the knowledge to decode vehicle identification numbers pointed out that the car’s VIN didn’t actually belong to a Corvette. As it turned out, the VIN was actually from a 1964 Impala. Using a different identifying number located elsewhere on the car, the officer was able to verify with the National Insurance Crime Bureau that the Corvette had been stolen.

This is currently one of the lead stories on the website of our local newspaper.

From the story:

Gray said she decided against getting vaccinated before her employer required it because she had already survived COVID, adding that other “powerful reasons” also came into play. She didn’t elaborate on those reasons in the Facebook post.

“I know there will be people who disagree with me or do not understand my reasons,” Gray wrote. “That is fully understood because that is a protected right they enjoy. Moreover, it is a personal decision for each American; but in my opinion, a forced decision to decide between a vaccination and the livelihood of an individual is a dangerous precedent.”

Gray said she tried to keep her job, but her employers rejected her offer to get tested weekly for COVID.

The story is written to be very sympathetic towards the news anchor. This is the same daily paper who ran a story on Ivermectin a few months back highlighting a woman who said it actually does work against Covid-19.

A pandemic spreader loses his job.

One of the largest producers of Covid misinformation on Tik Tok was a cook for Cascade Medical Center (Malcontent News)

[LEAVENWORTH, Wash.] - (MTN) He went by bloodytnvc5 on Tik Tok and was infamous for using a Pharoh’s face and headdress as his alter ego and for wearing blue medical gloves. A three-month investigation would reveal one of the most prominent creators of hate and Covid-19 misinformation on Tik Tok was a cook at Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth, Washington.

Cascade Medical Center, a 25-bed acute care hospital nestled in a Bavarian-themed town in the Eastern Cascades, fired two employees earlier this month, according to the Director of Public Relations, Clint Strand. Matthew Wilson of Leavenworth, 33, and Alyssa “Lyssa” Riggs of Cashmere, 21, presented themselves as a doctor and nurse on social media, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Wilson was meticulous in hiding his identity, using the Pharoh’s face and only showing his hands, encased in blue medical gloves. He would use a whiteboard to share his content to bypass artificial intelligence moderation while filming himself in examination rooms and surgical suites. His videos frequently used medical equipment as props. As Wilson and Riggs spread their lies, residents of Chelan County were flooding the emergency department gasping for breath, infected with Covid-19.

Wilson presented himself as a doctor in the local hospital but he was actually a chef; his assistant in the videos was an unlicensed dental hygienist.

He’s also a flamin’ anti-Semite, racist, and Nazi. People on TikTok tracked him down through small clues he inadvertently revealed while he made videos.

I want to be free to lead my life, express my opinions, practice (or not practice) religion as I see fit, etc., which is why I am willing to recognize that others should have the same right.

And I wish to live in a world which is environmentally sound, which is why I also recognize and support that right for others.

The head of Insulate Britain has called himself a “hypocrite” - adding he “doesn’t care” about insulating homes.

Liam Norton is behind the series of road-block protests in recent weeks. One of the main objectives of the protests is calling on the government to insulate all social housing by 2025 - therefore reducing the amount of wasted energy pumped out of people’s homes.

Earlier this week, it was revealed the leader of the environmental group doesn’t insulate his own home.

He uses gas central heating in a single-glazed home and has no insulation in his walls, a report revealed.

Mr Norton, who is an electrician, has now said he is “terrible” for not practicing what he preaches.

I mean, seriously? This reads like shit your crazy conspiracy uncle throws up with he’s already 5 Coors Lights into the family dinner:

“So what’s causing the worker shortage? One possible culprit is government and employer vaccine mandates that set ultimatums for workers. President Biden’s vaccine order first applied to nursing homes, which lost jobs in the month. Many states and school districts have also imposed mandates, and state and local education employment fell 161,000. The White House claims its vaccine mandates will boost job growth, but not if unvaccinated workers quit.

Democrats have also made quitting an easier economic option. Pandemic enhanced unemployment benefits ended in early September, but that was only one week before Labor’s monthly jobless survey ended. Next month might provide better data on that score. But there are still many other federal financial payments that don’t require work, including a $300 monthly allowance per child, food stamps and rental assistance. Many people have saved some of their transfer payments, and now Democrats are promising more.

Seriously? They’re going to go with “OHH NOOOEZ! TEH POORZ HAZ MUNNIEZ SO THEY WON’T WORK FOR CRUMBS!!”

Can’t help you there, but can add some personal anecdata. My mild case was detected a month ago today, and seemed to have largely resolved in about 15 days (normal temps, O2, last of a deep cough). Since then I ‘m convinced I’m in some sort of gentle long-haul slope. Several days a week I sleep 12 hours or more in chunks, feel extreme fatigue and some dizziness when awake. It isn’t doing much for my mood, and has killed most work around the house. A good metric is the sharp drop in LGF interaction.

I’d settle for 40 hours / 4 days. Once upon a time I had that schedule. It was a 24/7 business. Because of the way the schedule rotation worked out, every so often you got a 5-day “weekend”. It wasn’t a great job, but I’ve had much worse ones. It went well enough for a while, and then some assholes decided to fly some planes into some office buildings, and pretty soon after, that was the end of that.

Too much to do each day to do 4/40 unless school is going to a 4 day schedule as well.

I once worked for a company where, on a team-by-team basis, you could decide during the summer months if you wanted to work 5 8-hour days, or 4 10’s. The 4 10-hour days was a nice option, having a 3-day weekend literally every week for 3 months, especially for people who were on the high end of the totem pole and had cabins to go to and stuff like that. I’d go in at 5 AM, leave at 4 PM, and get a good amount of stuff done. Not so sure I’d choose it now, but it was good then.

Couldn’t decide which instructor or how long I wanted to ride (turns out it was 20 minutes) so I made up my own class using Pandora and the ‘Just ride’ feature on the Peloton. Matches up pretty close with the profiles for a lot of the classes I’ve taken.

Going to do this more often on the weekends - can always stretch it another 10 or 20 minutes if I’m in the mood.

A study in why “history” is difficult. Fact: sources conflict.

For some reason I wanted to look up famed San Diego born architect Clifford May, known as the father of the California ranch house style of single family homes.

Wikipedia: born 1903, died 1989

Los Angeles Conservancy entry: b. 1909, d. 1989.

An obit: b 1908 , d. 21 Oct 1989

Another obit: b. 29 Aug 1908, d. 20 Oct 1989

Social Security death index: b. 29 Aug 1908, d. 18 Oct 1989

Even the simplest of data from recent history is easily obscured by noise.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Oct 9, 2021 • 3:43:23pm

The most important thing doing genealogy has taught me about history is that “facts” are not what people think they are in history.

Entropy quickly erases almost all information (that is available macroscopically, i.e., to us human-sized things.)

Geologists of course know this as it is the most fundamental element of their science: very little remains of the past as one steps back in time.

This leads us to the real social problem we all have: the past can easily be misrepresented because the “facts” are often insufficient.

And most importantly, we humans have evolved high skills in lying. To others, and ourselves.

Biologists study deception as one of the odd results of evolution.

Anyway, we can easily be deceived about the past. Some of this is quite intentional (think the 6 Jan insurrection deniers).

Other times this deception is more insidious, unnoticed because it seeps in below the view of every day life.

So, I had never heard of this person — he is very wrong on so many things, yet very self-assured that he is correct. A massive appeal to his authority of being in the BioTech world. Yes, he does promote our favorite sheep-dip.

Everything he says is with absolute authority — brings up the Nuremberg Code and implies doctors and researchers should be tried and executed.

Dr Michael Yeadon: A FINAL WARNING TO HUMANITY

I watched the entire video and found it very disturbing. As you said, he speaks with authority, accusing every medical expert who disagrees with his views as lying and in some kind of plot to harm people. He was vice president and chief scientific officer for Pfizer’s United Kingdom-based allergy and respiratory unit until that unit shut down in 2011, division that had nothing to do with vaccines or infectious diseases. It was focused on developing drugs to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.. So another person with serious medical credential who, for some reason, took a dark turn and is actively working to harm others. Wonder if he could be involved in Q-Anon, though British and not American?

Personally, I fear early-onset dementia. Not that it runs in my family. But it can manifest in anyone.

So I do wonder when otherwise seemingly well educated and stable people go over the edge.

On the other hand we have the likes of Bill Shatner who is near 90 (and doing so while overweight the past 50 years), sharp, and about to go into space.

Time is a cruel mistress.

So, I do wonder about that doctor, if some paranoia has crept in as he is aging.

Some years back I cogitated here about the problem with emeriti.

Old tenured professors who late in life seem to go whacko, but their retirement position still allows them an air of credibility.

As we age we change.

And this is important too - we can act sometimes quite differently than we have in the past, if our environment changes.

Think of weddings and funerals. An attendee can seem to go off for the strangest of reasons, when in their typical daily lives they seem quite stable and boring. Then boom. Once in a very high emotional situation something changes.
