Measles vaccine efficacy — depending on study, etc. — under 95% efficacious
Mumps vaccine efficacy — depending on study, etc. — under 88% efficacious
Pertussis (whooping cough) — 80-90% efficacious

funnily enough, even if england and the u.s. had stayed out of the war, Russia would eventually, slowly have ground down the Nazis. The Nazis lost freakin’ millions of soldiers at Leningrad and Stalingrad. Hitler could have fed more divisions into both and it ultimately would have come out the same.
In the unlikely scenario that Lord Halifax’s proposed armistice was accepted, the result would have been an Eastern Front even more of a meat grinder than it was in our timeline. Without direct aid from the British and US, the USSR would have been a far more dire spot for everything from armor to aircraft to strategic supplies. You’d be looking at a war drug out for months, if not years longer than actually happened and the death toll would have been ruinous.

I don’t consider the term “colorblind” when used in the context of racial discrimination as “racist” so much as I think of it as “privileged.” As in the people who tend to use that term are those who are privileged enough to have never faced racial discrimination in their own lives or associated with those who have, so that when they hear cases of such they find themselves concluding that the discrimination is not racial in nature but due to some character flaw or past behavior.

Racism is really a subset of hereditary privilege, which is what all conservative agitation is ultimately aimed at preserving or, if possible, expanding. Racism is how the hereditary elite get the white lower classes on board. They haven’t inherited money or property or status in traditional power networks, but they have inherited their skin color and that is more than enough for many once they see that it brings them, too, some kind of privilege.

I had something of a debate about this with my sister a while back. She’s on Facebook a bit too much and follows (at least) Candace Owens. Owens had some post about how people were calling the sensor based faucets racist because they wouldn’t recognize dark skin. Of course the position of my sister and Owens was “that’s not racist, and you’re just looking for it everywhere.”
I was trying to explain to her that it was a blind spot or what is call negligent racism (you don’t have anyone in the room that’s different from you so you don’t consider alternative points of view or effects). But I couldn’t get through to her because in her mind racism is purely an interpersonal thing “I don’t like/hate those people” and not something that could be the result of omissions conscious or not.
Which, by the way, that distinction is the central point of CRT… it’s not necessarily about the intent so much as the outcomes. Much like the difference between intentional torts and negligence - that I hit you in the face with a baseball bat and causes damage is more important than whether I meant to do it or it was an accident

in my little corner, independent does not mean fence sitting or wishy-washy. It means not being myopically pigeonholed left/right r/d, cons/lib. It means not holding extreme or radical positions, generally black and white ones. It means not living on any one dimensional definition of positions.
It means not being required to hold similarly polarized positions on unrelated issues - ie say on abortion and gun control.
It does not mean not holding strong or convicted opinions. It also generally means each issue on its merits and sometimes cherry picking good points of otherwise bad policy.
It means that whether originalist, strict constructionist, or activist, it is not the only interpretation of the constitution possible. And while yours, whatever it is, may be passionate, reasonable, etc it is not necessarily the only “right” one. We are guessing to an extent - assuming, inferring. Whether it was left ambiguous on purpose or by accident - whether their ancillary writings help or hurt their “original intent”. It means recognizing that this is 2021 with 350+m people in a country that is 50 states, plus territories that covers more than just 13 colonies. There is an instantaneous world economy that can and does have devastating effects on us — in that instant. That we don’t control all the natural resources or even have the largest population that can influence the use of natural resources (by everyday consumption, not by manipulating their mining/use/sale) everything and it means recognizing the thorny issues created by progress technology, and that critical thinking people can in fact critically think and may arrive at perfectly reasonable, workable, livable conclusions different from yours.
None of this says anything about not having or abandoning principles. It’s figuring out how to get as much as you can from the political process. Not stamping your foot and demanding that all things must go your way or you’ll throw a tantrum and then toss a wrench into the system, grinding it to a halt.

There’s an extremely strange and, frankly, frightening story in The Nation concerning a growth industry in North Carolina, and if January 6 had not happened, I wouldn’t even bring it up. But it did, so I am.
Oak Grove is a self-described “Tactical and Cultural Training Center” occupying 300 acres between Hoffman and nearby Camp Mackall. According to the company’s website, facilities include a multistory shoot house, a small-arms range, a rappelling tower, an explosive breaching bay (to practice blowing down doors for forced entry), and five “realistic cultural training villages ranging in size and type with available role players and livestock.”
Yes, it sounds like a theme park for suburban commandos—Militialand!—but it’s a serious business run by serious people.
Who’s training in Hoffman? According to a report this September from the Costs of War project at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, Pentagon spending totaled over $14 trillion over the course of the war of Afghanistan—with one-third to half going to for-profit contractors. Alongside caterers and cleaners and the manufacturers of tanks and planes, today’s contractors include companies training not only current and former military and cops and private guards, but also civilians seeking to be more “prepared.”
In addition to Oak Grove and the infamous Blackwater (now renamed Academi, which was founded in N.C.’s Dismal Swamp in 1998), North Carolina is home to Frontline, Spartan, The Range and others—all of them offering realistic combat and live fire training to government, corporate and private individuals. Grassroots activists organizing across this state are concerned about a seemingly unmonitored flow of military-grade weapons, training, and white warrior ideology out of North Carolina’s privatized military and into civilian lives.
Commenter:
I was drafted in the very last military draft in 1972, back when the troops themselves did KP. In the middle of my two year service, the Army switched from us doing our own KP to contractors. Immediately, the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the mess halls plummeted. Before, we had a mess sergeant over our shoulders insisting on us polishing that giant cook pan, and we knew we would be eating off the trays the next day. After that, it was not uncommon to find hair or old food on the trays and the food was poorly made.

Conservatives lie to themselves and each other constantly. It’s only when they try to lie to a normal person that they get pushback. Of course they lied about quitting their jobs so they’d have the right to play Russian roulette with COVID.

Power begets power begets absolute, unshakable, impenetrable power.
in some ways, what is happening in the U.S. senate right now will be very healthy for the Democratic party if it survives long enough to make use of the wisdom gained from it. Pretty sure after these two years, and the possible loss of senate control in 2022, if Democrats win back control in 2024, the death of the filibuster will be first on the agenda, and then a voting rights act that breaks the back of the gerrymander. Then, quite possibly, an increased supreme court.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A judge who oversees elections in an Alabama county was removed from office after being accused of racist, sexually inappropriate behavior that included demeaning comments about women and saying George Floyd “got what he deserved” when an officer in Minnesota murdered him.
Talladega County Probate Judge Randy Jinks, 65, was ousted in a unanimous order filed Friday by the nine-member Alabama Court of the Judiciary. Following a trial, the panel found that he violated five judicial ethics rules including failing to uphold the integrity and independence of the court system.
A former business owner who served as chairman of the county Republican executive committee, Jinks denied most of the claims, blamed workers for misinterpreting jokes and accused employees of eavesdropping, court records showed.
Jinks, who doesn’t have a law license, was first elected in 2018 and took office the following year. His conduct was the subject of a complaint filed in March that accused him of watching and sharing sexually inappropriate videos and making comments about the appearance and anatomy of women.

I’m somewhat privileged in that way, living in California, we have non-partisan top-two primaries now. The only time party registration matters is for presidential contests, the Dems (and I think Libertarians) let independents vote in their primaries; the GOP doesn’t, but there hasn’t been a Republican presidential candidate that I’ve actually like since McCain in 2000, so that doesn’t really matter much. And since I don’t really have much desire to run for public office these days, being registered in a party is sort of unnecessary.

So this whole UNFCC thing (COP26 is one of their meetings) can be thrown under the bus once the Supreme Court rules that that the EPA cannot regulate carbon dioxide.
Because if the US can’t regulate CO2 then every country in the world will use that as a reason for themselves not doing their own part.
This is the end, I think, of the UN’s ability to really influence anything about climate change. For all the the pomp that goes with these big UN gatherings, for all the leaders that will show up, there is a feeling of ennui that permeates (well, at least me.)

Many people do not seem to accept why the UN has meetings.
Many young people seem to get upset that the UN is not a savior.
The UN exists to allow different countries to talk to each other, under some sort of rules for comity.
That’s why the UN exists. That is why there are UN meetings.
COP26 has little effect on climate change. It exists so countries can talk to each other under the same umbrella.
The concept of sovereignty is a tricky thing, but ultimately it means that nothing can be done. Think of the UN like the US Senate, only bigger and less tractable.
Here’s the ugly, uncomfortable, and unpleasant truth: the rich run the show. Climate change is not going to be avoided because the rich do not want to give up their wealth.
Because we are social animals and we create pecking orders, and the rich are high up on the order.
Abating climate change will only happen through even larger innovations than we’ve already seen.

If Israel “owned” Congress, we’d have taxpayer-funded universal healthcare, including abortion on demand up to 20 weeks, free college, and the only people avoiding mandatory military service would be those who opt to serve on ambulance crews or in immigrant assistance instead.

I’m sure Lou had his playful side.
I saw Laurie Anderson in concert not long after he died. She told a lot of stories about him and yes, his playful side, but towards the end he just wanted to be with her and appreciate every second.

One of the long running problems with the UN meetings like COP26 is that the UN heads can’t speak truths. They have to be remarkably agile with their words.
Now, we’re a long ways from Khrushchev pounding on a podium, but just having a guy get up there, as today, and claim we have to keep the surface average temperature rise under 1.5C is as useless as having one of those cute otters get up there and balance a ball.
We have already bought 1.5C , it’s just that the universe hasn’t delivered it yet. Just wait three decades, the delivery is not coming by door-dash.

re: #177 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
At the COP26 press briefing by Denmark today, Sen. Kerry was one of the guests who spoke a little:
What I was surprised by is that he brought up his time in the Navy, and that the USN has been using nukes for 70+ years without any major incident.
AFAIK Senator Kerry never served on a nuclear ship or sub during his service. Modern nuclear ships and subs in the USN all run reactors with 90%-plus enriched uranium fuel, basically bomb-grade material. If, say, Iran decided to start building a fleet of “green” nuclear-powered oil carriers to USN reactor engineering standards I suspect there would be a certain amount of harsh words spoken on the subject.
The Russian icebreaker reactors use medium-enriched fuel, just under 20% U-235 if I recall but they can be refuelled with less maintenance effort than a nuclear sub or aircraft carrier since their engine spaces are a lot more open than a purely military vessel. I think they have a 7-year operational cycle between refuelling. I’m not sure if any of the ex-Soviet era Kiev BCNs are still in service.

Of the four in that class one was scrapped, two sold to China a museum ships, and the fourth was sold to India and is still in service in their navy.

See, your mistake is confusing “Israel” and “the Jews”, which is something the anti-Semites do all the time because, to them, the Jews are Israel and Israel is the Jews. And of course, by “Jews” they mean their various stereotypes, not the actual Israeli republic nor the Americans who practice the Jewish faith, but some amorphous ethnicity/race that is “Jewish”.

What about the Thresher?
Neither the Thresher or Scorpion were lost due to a reactor failure. Thresher was lost due to uncontrolled flooding in the engine room and the emergency blow HP air lines freezing up due to excessive moisture in the system when activated. Scorpion was lost due to (classified) reasons.

I’ve heard so many things over the years from torpedo accident ala Kursk to a torpedo doing a circle ala the Mk18 that sank USS Tang to being sunk by the Russians. Whatever it was I keep hoping that they’ll declassify it someday.

I suspect the military members who go down that route will be fewer than some project.
And now that I think of it, this is probably a good way to purge the military of bad actors.

I’ve heard all sorts of rumors as well. The USN (SS) actively discourages them. But in the vein of being sunk by the USSR, well lets just say the rumor mill has it that they found enough at the wreck site and surrounding area for there to have been 2 boats going down at the same time.

The same military forces who are willing to be deployed anywhere to fight and perhaps lose their lives or their limbs because of orders from their superior officers are unwilling to take a vaccine to protect themselves from a deadly disease — vaccines that have been successfully administered to hundred of millions of people world wide. Certainly seems as those these solders have a problem obeying legitimate authority.
Maybe they can get a job as a server in restaurants in Florida or Texas, where vaccines are not required.
For some reason I’ve been watching a lot of history videos on Youtube, mostly by creators who are tossing around ideas of why things happen.
There is an enormous plank in the eyes of some, say the young guys who like to fixate on wars (especially WWI and WWII). They almost always have such a Euro-centric view of the universe that I feel they have embedded themselves into a mind set too deeply organized by the worst of ideologues.
Earlier today I linked to a (right-wing) article on revisionist history books (of WWII.)
The need to rework our feelings and beliefs about the past is real. We are always trying to figure out why something happened. Or didn’t happen.
I take this as natural and good bit of exercise for the intellect.
But I also believe that trying to claim why this or that happens is fraught with problems.
Causality in human societies strikes me as a tough nut. We are creatures whose actions are controlled by chemicals as much as anything else.
Even given that, I think I am on solid ground in claiming that the existential collective crisis this country is in has its roots in our fundamentalist Christian past. The loss-of-god problem is really important to driving American politics. It has for over a hundred years.

Exciting day at our homestead. Our son - he has been away for two years this week - is now a Corporal. We watched the video of him a the ceremony and it was bittersweet recognizing that he is now a young man who has changed so much! We are so proud of him!
Ah, pass him my congratulations. Don’t know how it is in the Corps but to me Corporal was the best rank. All the privileges of an NCO and very few of the responsibilities because you were expected to still be learning them. Was especially good when on TDY for schooling as I could enjoy the NCO club rather than the usually lesser EM clubs :D
re: #230 Hecuba’s daughter
A lot of these anti-vaxxers losing their military and police jobs, the racist clownshoes infesting our Jan 6. Court proceedings, and other assorted civilized society rejects are counting on a Trump victory in 2024 where he will issue blanket pardons for everyone.
They aren’t wrong or crazy in their aspirations. Trump would very well likely issue reversals overriding all military decisions for the past 4 years as he replaces all of the Joint Chiefs with total wackadoodle lackies and throws the justice system into intentional chaos. They are counting on all pay and pension unrealized to also be included in reinstatement. Don’t think they all have a Trump lock victory in their heads as Republican counties everywhere stack the deck with 100% partisan crooks running the elections.
re: #3 JOE 🥓
It goes back to Pruneface Reagan, Stockman and Gramm slashing the Section 8 budget in 1981. Homelessness really began to spike when housing assistance was cut. Of course those assholes kept repeating the “private charity is more efficient” bullshit which Pruneface mainstreamed.
While cutting Section 8 certainly slashed *thousands* of subsidized housing units available to poor people, I would suggest that dismantling mental health programs made it even worse by dropping *tens of thousands* of horribly vulnerable people into very unwelcoming streets with no help.
