re: #1 Punish Domestic Terrorists

1. He’s retiring, so I find the sudden remorse less than valuable.
2. Trump being responsible for the attack on the capital has nothing to do with the certification of the election
3. The idea that he wouldn’t regret voting to deny certification if the attack didn’t happen means he’s not really remorseful
4. fuck him
5. There was no legitimate reason to vote against certification
6. see point 4

Oh, so he is not running for re-election? How courageous of him to say that. Ignorant git.

As far as I know, Tom Rice IS running for re-election (he’s my rep) with about 14 crazy challengers. I disagree with just about every policy stance he has, but I’ll give him this—he voted for the second impeachment, and he’s the first Repug to voice any regret about his vote on 1/6.

I have no idea how I cut myself.

This is not the worst kitchen accident I have ever had. In spoilers for the squeamish.

As I mentioned yesterday, that not only was it the winter solstice/yuletide, but also my hand-fasting day. If you follow me on the bird app, you probably saw this tweet. I repost it here now for the rest of you.

Maybe while using the lame (a razor blade on a stick for you non-bakers) or peeling a hard squash I should wear those anti-cut gloves I bought to use with the mandoline vegetable slicer.

Yesterday was Winter Solstice, that means today is…

my birthday!! Another successful trip around the sun. Just one more round trip and I’ll get to “Four Score”.

If you juggle the numbers you’ll figure out I was in grade school in the early 1950’s. During the polio pandemic. I can still remember those days. Parents were terrified their kids would “catch” that disease. I remember getting jabbed with the Salk vaccine.
No one hesitated getting the shot. Anything to prevent the disease and avoid getting placed into an iron lung in order to survive. Then the Sabin vaccine came out as a booster and everyone was ready to line up to get their “sugar cube”. To administer the vaccine it was dropped onto a sugar cube and then taken orally.

I am truly disappointed in the number of Americans who refuse a vaccine that will significantly reduce the impact of a deadly, highly contagious disease.

People want to return to the lifestyle of the 1950’s. Well, I lived in the 1950’s, and in those days no one would ever consider avoiding a life saving vaccine.

There are two political figures where, when I see a picture of them, the thought comes unbidden to my mind, “If penises had faces, they would look like this.”

Chuck Grassley is the sad, old man version. Steven Miller is the pathetic young man version.

I’m sorry. The thought just pops in there.

You make a great point. Every once in a while a bad, maybe fatal flaw shows up in food, or a home/baby product. But there is no “anti-food” or “anti crib” movement. And talk about a mandate lol.

Suddenly all the oversight and clinical trials and real world data for about a year is not near enough to insist we vaccinate. SMH.

At the Myerson here in Dallas to see the Dallas orchestras Christmas concert. They are requiring masks be worn and employees have signs to show people to get people to out them on. There’s this one dad that is being obstinate about it. First he hung it over his ears, then he got up and talked to the usher on the side, and now he’s gone, though his wife and kids are still here. Mom’s basically acting the same way with her mask but quieter.

BRANCH COUNTY, MI - A diner owner who kept his restaurant open in defiance of state shutdowns has died after more than a two-month battle with COVID-19.

John Parney Sr., 62, died Dec. 14. He owned the Quincy Diner, 174 E. Chicago St. (U.S. 12) in the village of Quincy. He kept the restaurant open in December 2020, in violation of the partial shutdown ordered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

I posted this today at SorryAntivaxxer.com

One really interesting aspect of this is the stark contrast between the right wing’s current indifference to Covid and the complete, pants-shitting panic they exhibited over AIDS back in the 80s. For instance, at that time, I was selling cars for an upscale dealer in the DFW area. I lived in an apartment complex that had a pool. Various co-workers kept pestering me for invitations to come over and swim as my guest. I happened to tell them that a guy who lived in the complex was HIV-positive (which was true). One of them asked me if he used the pool. I said he did. I never heard another word about inviting them over to swim. That’s right, the goobers thought you could contract AIDS from swimming in the same pool as someone who had HIV. The same thing happened with the Ebola outbreak in 2014. One guy who had just come from Liberia died of ebola in a DFW hospital and yokel conservatives went apeshit, demanding that President Obama resign and that all Africans be expelled immediately.

Another poster added this, which I think says it all.

Just to revisit a topic that we have discussed exhaustively and repeatedly: Joe Manchin and the precarious balance in the Senate. Yes, it took a huge amount of energy and GOTV efforts to defeat Trump, especially contrary to all reason he managed to get over 11 million more votes than in 2016, despite his gross mishandling of the pandemic.

But the only reason that McConnell is not Senate Majority Leader is that two liberals managed to win Georgia, and a primary reason for their victory? Trump’s fury that he was not reelected and all the levers he pulled to overturn the results failed. Instead of working overtime to help Georgia Republicans to hold on to their Senate seats, he instead spent his time bad-mouthing the Georgia establishment and their failure to violate the law to assist him. With McConnell as Senate Majority Leader, as Bannon so colorfully phrased it, the Biden administration would indeed have been killed in the crib.

We cannot continue on the path of denigrating Manchin because until we have a real majority in the Senate, we cannot afford to lose a single Democrat. McConnell will promise him anything to gain his allegiance. He may be extremely conservative but he votes with the Democrats most of the time. Obama was forced to compromise on the ACA to appease Lieberman; otherwise there would have been a public option. The BBB may be weaker than we would like but if we can get a version out there, it will be another victory for Biden. Of course, if we cannot get filibuster reform and pass voting rights, any victory is likely to come to a crashing end with the November 2022 election.

Ugh, that experience sounds pretty awful.

It reminded me that in the Army, often equipment is carried suspended under a helicopter. If the load starts to swing uncontrollably, and threatens to take down the helicopter, the pilot will jettison the suspended equipment.

There were always rumors about senior leaders whose Army supplied vehicle was in an unauthorized accident,. And then suddenly orders were cut to helicopter transport it. Then during the transport, the load started to swing uncontrollably and had to be jettisoned.

My experience is that Army vehicle mechanics could repair just about anything. To the point that it was highly unlikely that a vehicle would need to be ‘terminated with extreme prejudice’.

So sorry to hear about the bloodshed in the kitchen. That certainly sent shudders down my spine.

I do hope that those who sacrificed heal up painlessly, quickly and completely.

Yes, there are specialty resistant gloves for slicing and cutting. They go by names like butcher’s, chainmail, and kevlar gloves, among other names. I believe that they are rated on protection by ANSI from A2 through A9. And they are variously composed of leather, certain plastics, kevlar, and yes, chainmail.

I have a kevlar glove that I picked up in the fishing section of Dick’s Sporting Goods some years back. I do wear (it) in the kitchen when I am working with stabby, jabby and slicy things like knives.

Come to think about it, since I wear them when dealing with things far sharper than I am, I probably should wear them when I am logged on at lgf too. Even though I seem to miss the point often enough that I may be safe…

re: #122 ckkatz

So sorry to hear about the bloodshed in the kitchen. That certainly sent shudders down my spine.

I do hope that those who sacrificed heal up painlessly, quickly and completely.

Yes, there are specialty resistant gloves for slicing and cutting. They go by names like butcher’s, chainmail, and kevlar gloves, among other names. I believe that they are rated on protection by ANSIi from A2 through A9. And they are variously composed of leather, certain plastics, kevlar, and yes, chainmail.

I have a kevlar glove that I picked up in the fishing section of Dick’s Sporting Goods some years back. I do wear (it) in the kitchen when I am working stabby, jabby and slicy things like knives.

Come to think about it, since I wear them when dealing with things far sharper than I am, I probably should wear them when I am logged on at lgf too. Even though I seem to miss the point often enough that I may be safe…

The problem with most lames is that they use ancient tech (Double sided razor blades!) in open fittings with no guardrails. Accidents waiting to happen. Sorry it happened to the Babushka and I hope she heals up fast.

Deboning chicken must be one of the most hazardous moments with a kitchen knife.

I suspect that you are correct.

Filleting fish may also be dangerous. (Which is why the fishing section had the kevlar gloves when I passed by.) Particularly if done by the fisherman after a hot and ‘thirsty’ fishing expedition. I cannot speak from experience on that though, as I do not have the patience to fish.

I have been meaning to take a cooking course on how to use a knife in the kitchen.

I do a lot of knife work in the kitchen. I’ve never cut myself badly, but I’ve nicked myself. A lot. I’ve never had to get a stitch and have no missing fingertips but I’ve got a couple of scars. The most common reason?

Busy, distracted, or doing something new.

Some things I’ve learned.

Expensive knives are worth the price, but read the reviews. Some of the most expensive suck.

Find a good knife sharpener. Talk to your hair cutter. Trust me on this.

If you’ve got a good sushi shop near you, ask if you can watch a pro break down fish for the night’s nigiri. It’s an art and you should learn it.

This thread is bringing back memories.

When I was a kid, we went to Canada several years where we’d carry a canoe to some small glacial lakes away from people, then camp and fish.

The crystal clear waters and wilderness were beautiful. We’d catch enough fish for dinner then return to camp. I got to clean all the fish (hence my experience).

While I’ve never been a big fan of fish, that extremely fresh fish, wrapped in foil with some butter, salt and other spices, then tossed into the campfire for a few minutes was wonderful.

I’ll never forget my grandfather tossing egg shells in the coffee pot and stirring beans with a stick.

Ah, the old days.

They were in pants-crapping panic mode on the ground level, but the Reagan Administration… completely ignored it. Sorta like Jared the Dunce telling Clownstick to ignore COVID because only brown people in Blue States are getting it. They didn’t and couldn’t give two shits about “The Gay Plague”.

So while Reagan was ignoring it in the 80s and it looked like no one was doing… anything, I spent several years as a child in pants-crapping panic mode because I had a hemorrhage during a routine surgery and had to have a blood transfusion… in 1980 and didn’t know if I potentially was going to die of AIDS at some point in elementary school.

According to Wikipedia’s article on the lame, the blades are often curved, which produces certain cuts which are finer than straight razors (this implies people used straight razors).

My wife says for her baking she will only use a paring knife, because a lame is too dangerous.

re: #138 ckkatz

How are hospitalizations doing?

I had understood that even though omicron was more contagious, hospitalizations among the vaccinated and boosted was significantly lower.

Well, the real problem is that Delta is still a thing, and two weeks ago was still the primary mover of Covid infections. It was also more lethal than either the original flavor or the new Omicron.

So the people in the ICUs today are almost all Deltas. And the people in the ICUs two weeks from now will also be Deltas, new cases replacing the dead.

Omicrons seem to be hospitalized at just 40% of the Deltas, but Omicron seems to spread at 3X the rate that Delta did. Which, if you break out ICU versus hospital beds may be good or bad.

In any case, I am masked, social distancing, and meeting friends outdoors this Holiday Season.

The Nebraska Panhandle is nearly at zero after coming to the end of the second wave (we’ve trailed way behind other areas). The vaccination rate here is going to bite if it doesn’t come up soon, currently at 41%. That said, the state is still making it difficult to get a vaccine at all here. Pretty much my whole town is vaccinated though.

My culinary education was in New Orleans, where I learned about how food worked. I was in college, and was desperately poor. I prepped at restaurants and made a lot of Roux which consisted of cooking flour and oil until it reached a certain color (blonde, pecan, dark) that went into the various soups, stews, and gumbos that are the ABCs of Louisiana cooking.

There was never, ever, such thing as a peanut roux. In addition, a proper roux would never be spiced with Herbes de Provence, which would be completely overwhelmed by the roux.

Indeed there is, as Jones (D) announced his resignation as of last week to spend time with family (he and the wife are expecting their first child). Since he’s not leaving under the shadow of scandal and the district’s dark blue, I don’t think there’s any real chance of an upset there.

How much does Santa pay to park his sleigh?
Nothing, it’s on the house.

He removed the Mariah Carey Christmas CD and now it’s fine.

What has a jolly laugh, brings you presents and scratches up your furniture?
Santa Claws.

What do snowmen like to do on the weekend?
Chill out.

What’s the difference between Santa’s reindeer and a knight?
One slays the dragon, and the other’s draggin’ the sleigh.

One night a Viking named Rudolph the Red was looking out the window when he said, “It’s going to rain.”
His wife asked, “How do you know?”
“Because Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear.”

There are four stages of life and they
all involve Santa:
1. You believe in Santa.
2. You don’t believe in Santa.
3. You are Santa.
4. You look like Santa.

What did Adam say to the missus on the 24th of December?

Neither my wife nor I can figure out what to do with the smartphones on offer, so I’m guessing flip phone (plus we almost never use it).

Presumably we can buy a different phone later from them.

I’ve had Apple smartphones for about 15 years. My wife who could barely operate my iPhone when she had to make a call just got a Samsung as her first smartphone and figured out how to operate it in about 6 weeks. Now, if I have to operate her phone I’m totally lost. My iPhone 6 is old and 4G, hers is fancy new with 5G. I’m kinda jelly.

I’m stuck on Tracfone’s site trying to noodle out what I should replace my flip phone with.

Tracfone says support for 3G is going to drop dead in February so I have to replace it.

Motorola makes some good and, for smart phones, simple to sus out for quite cheap. This Moto Power G 2021 is the one I got and is on sale right now. Android 10 (mine just updated to Android 11) is easy enough to use and it has excellent battery life. It’s unlocked so just drop your tracphone simm card in.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I am wide awake and extremely annoyed.
Took my dogs out for a walk at 12:30, found my truck missing.
Called the police to report it stolen. It was towed as a derelict/abandoned vehicle.
As of now it’s at least $180+ to get it back
A week ago I found a code enforcement sticker on my truck notifying me that it was derelict because it had no current registration. Warning it would be towed in 15 days (29 Dec). Low and behold someone had ripped my registration decal from my tag.
Truck is/was current registered thru 9/ 22
Yesterday (Tues) I went and paid for a new reg & decal to be compliant ($36 and change). Affixed the new decal this morning (Wed) when it had finally stopped raining
I bet when I get to the tow yard there is no tag on the vehicle. Hell I bet they’re the assholes that stole the damn reg. decal

My cynical muse is whispering in my ear again, suggesting that perhaps Dems should listen to the critics and avoid going to the polls next year with promises of what they’ll do/pass if they keep majorities in Congress. That what they should do instead is go to voters and be honest: “We are running for no other reason than to keep Republicans out of power. We’re not promising anything specific because we can’t guarantee we’ll deliver on it. But we promise we’ll pass…something, no matter how lackluster or pointless, because we’ve decided that’s all you lot care about. The story includes many other examples of Mitch McConnell patting himself on the shell for his excellent work in thwarting legislative progress for President Joe Biden, but it’s all the usual self-serving bullshit you’d expect. We aren’t going to give you a list of the times the GOP screamed bloody murder at its few “mavericks” because it is Christmas week and we don’t want to. And if anybody thinks we’re going to stop screaming at that fuckhead because he might hit us worse if we make him mad, we’re sorry. We’re sorry he has a personality disorder that apparently makes him break the actual world for a half million dollars a year, and that he thinks people without jobs have kids who shouldn’t eat. Of course, nobody’s actually removed the D next to his name for him — he can caucus with Democrats as long as he would like — that’s reserved for “people who vote to impeach a man who sent armed lunatics to kill them.”

I don’t know where you’re going with this. Once you got past the Concerned Parent/Actually GOP County Committee Chair plants on the nooz, the main issue in VA seemed to be that the schools were closed for a LONG time because of COVID, McAuliffe sounded like he brushed off the parents, and enough voters got pissed off about that. And if you believe in Iron Laws of Politics, like the Dems are going to lose the House in 22 because in midterms that’s almost always what happens, VA elects the party that lost the previous presidential election because that’s almost always what happens.

If you’re saying that negative partisanship appeals work better for the GOP than the Dems, that’s probably true because that’s all the GOP has. It doesn’t mean that the Dems shouldn’t use it to its maximum advantage. Don’t progressives criticize liberals for not being willing to fight?

McAuliffe was asked to weigh in on parents and their concerns about what’s being taught in VA schools, to which he proceeded to play into every stereotype of Dems being out-of-touch elitists by opining that parents should have no say on what’s taught in our schools. But before that night and after it, the bulk of his campaign could be summed up as “Youngkin = Trump.” And just like how we won the presidency but got hammered down-ballot, the specter of Trump was not enough to people’s worries about what’s happening in their own backyards.

Chile’s tattooed president-elect honors homeland in ink
By PATRICIA LUNA Associated Press DECEMBER 22, 2021 — 10:10PM

SANTIAGO, Chile — When Gabriel Boric is sworn in as Chile’s president he’ll not only be the youngest to lead the South American country but also the first in Latin America to sport several tattoos.

The question is whether he’ll openly display them.

One person hoping he does is Yumbel Góngora, the self-proclaimed “tattoo dissident” who inked the three elaborate designs that fill Boric’s arms and back with sweeping imagery from his native Patagonia region.

“It’s important that a person never forgets their roots. That always keeps you focused on where you are and what’s important … not get lost in the fame,” Gongora told The Associated Press while taking a break at her parlor in downtown Santiago decorated with artwork containing feminist slogans.

Boric, 35, scored a historic victory in Sunday’s runoff over a one-time admirer of Donald Trump after campaigning on a promise to attack the nagging poverty and inequality that he and leftist supporters argue is the unacceptable underbelly of a free market model imposed decades ago by the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Or, as analysts tend to think, the attack didn’t work because the GOP was able to use an “unassembled convention” to short-circuit a primary, nominating Mr. Smily Business Not Racist At All Guy and letting the usual cut-outs do the Trumpy attacks. This is about the only state where the GOP can do this, and they’ll be stuck with whatever racist yahoo Trumpkin the GOP primary voters barf up in other states.

The party leadership certainly fought like mad to get the BIF over the finish line, such that they stomped all over progressives to do so.

If you conclude, as Pelosi obviously did, that having the BIF to show voters as a huge positive in the midterms was better than holding out for a BIF and BBB that was at large risk of not happening at all, yes. If you want an only positive message for the midterms, why risk getting neither of these big bills passed?

TL;DR version: this round of redistricting, Dems have unified control of more states and are using it more aggressively; TX seems to be using gerrymandering more for incumbent protection, which is the opposite of what you want to do to maximize seats; and gerrymandering in the red midwest states is just bouncing the rubble at this point.

‘You Stupid B*tch!’: Grown Man Allegedly Punched 16-Year-Old Girl Who Accidentally Cut Him Off in Traffic

According to an affidavit, a 16-year-old girl accidentally cut off his Porsche 911 while in traffic on Florida Avenue North on Thursday at about 10:31 p.m. Saunders allegedly did not let the incident slide. Enraged, he followed her to the intersection of Florida Avenue North and Henderson Avenue East, officers wrote.

“At the intersection the suspect cut in front of the victim’s vehicle and stopped in front of her at the red light,” police said. “While stopped for the red light the suspect exited his vehicle and approached the victim’s vehicle and yelled at her, ‘What the fuck are you doing? You stupid bitch! You cut me off!’”

Officers said the girl clearly heard him because her window was rolled down.

“The suspect then reached into the victim’s open driver’s side window and punched her in the face with a closed fist,” officers said. “The victim suffered redness, soreness and bruising to the left side of her

Here in Nebraska, the redistricting fight over the state’s blue dot (NE-2, Omaha and South Sioux City) to divide off minority areas and add them to the other districts to eliminate the left-leaning district has ended.

NE-2 was kept whole, though Saunders County (heavily Republican, to the west of Douglas County) was added to NE-2. NE-2 will probably remain a blue dot.

In state redistricting, Sen. Matt Williams (R) of Gothenburg (Dawson County, south central part of the state) had his rural district divided up and eliminated, to add a district to Sarpy County (liberal leaning, south of Douglas County) due to population growth there. My state senator tried to stop the elimination of that district, citing rural areas are not being represented fairly in the Unicameral.

State law limits our legislature to forty-nine districts (the smallest legislature in the nation). Democrats proposed raising the number of districts, which the Republicans shot down (that would add more liberal districts).

Interestingly, Saunders County used to be part of NE-1 (Lincoln). Adding it to NE-2 probably doesn’t upset that district, but NE-1 is a district which is only somewhat red (Jeff Fortenberry, currently under FBI investigation). Taking Saunders County out of it makes NE-1 a more-competitive district. Dakota County (far northeast Nebraska) was moved into my district (NE-3), which pushes us further right.

Omicron Not Less Severe Than Delta, UK Study Says (WebMD, December 22, 2021)

A study conducted in the United Kingdom says there’s no evidence the Omicron variant causes less severe reactions than the Delta variant.

“The study finds no evidence of Omicron having lower severity than Delta, judged by either the proportion of people testing positive who report symptoms, or by the proportion of cases seeking hospital care after infection,” says a blog post by researchers from the U.K.’s Imperial College London. “However, hospitalization data remains very limited at this time.”

Researchers looked at data gathered by the U.K. Health Security Agency and the U.K.’s health service for COVID cases confirmed by PCR tests between Nov. 29 and Dec. 11.

Researchers estimate the risk of reinfection by Omicron is 5.4 times greater than for the Delta.

“This implies that the protection against reinfection by Omicron afforded by past infection may be as low as 19%,” the blog said, adding that researchers estimated protection would be between 0-20% after two doses of vaccine and would be 55-80% after a booster shot.

“[Scanlon] thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety,” her office tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

The 62-year-old Democrat, who represents part of South Philly and its surrounding suburbs, was unharmed when a carjacker pulled a gun on her near FDR Park. The park is adjacent to Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center, home to most of the city’s pro sports teams.
Two men in a dark-colored SUV demanded her keys, which she handed over, according to WPVI. Her personal cell phone, government-issued cell phone, purse and identification were inside her stolen SUV, the station said.

The broad daylight incident came as Philadelphia endured one of its most violent years. A record of 540 homicides had been recorded so far this year, police said earlier this week. Carjackings were also up 76 percent from 2020, cops reported on Dec. 9.

re: #40 Backwoods_Sleuth

The Court should have upheld the mandates and ruled against the fuckers claiming Biden exceeded his authority or OSHA authority to impose mandates for public health.

Fact is that the US has mandated public health measures since its founding. We’ve seen inoculations required for the Continental Army, and settled Supreme Court cases about vaccinations and preventative health measures during pandemics.

This is another attempt to undermine public health. Just giving this case a hearing gives life to antivax BS. Once again, the right wing Court shows its anti-vax, anti-science bent.

Make no mistake that this court is out to destroy the administrative state, and mandates from OSHA are part and parcel of that. They are out to limit what govt can do, all so that billionaires can rake in more money, take advantage of lax oversight (or no oversight) and push all the burdens on to those least able to endure them.

Yeah, that’s the pro-life GOP for you…

Hell I bet they’re the assholes that stole the damn reg. decal

Sorry that happened friend, in your shoes I would get one of those clear license plate covers; if they did it once they will do it again.

Yeah. Surviving the launch is just step one. They have to get it parked at L2. They have to get the heat shield deployed fully and properly oriented to keep the instruments at proper temp. The instruments have to be properly calibrated and no screwups as with Hubble.

There’s no second chances here. No rescue missions. Once it’s out there, it’s done. We were able to fix Hubble and then update/upgrade over time b/c of a low earth orbit. The Webb is nowhere near that.

Absolutely. If you want fascism and the end of democracy, vote Republican. That’s how Hitler managed to get elected. Democratic voters may not like it, but those are the facts. The systems in the US are not designed for a functional government or society, which is why it is so difficult to do anything that improves the country or the world, and so easy to perpetuate white supremacy and oligarchy.

Not supporting evil or fascism is enough for my vote. I don’t think it’s enough for a majority of Americans though. Or at least a majority of Americans who would be allowed to vote.

The party leadership certainly fought like mad to get the BIF over the finish line, such that they stomped all over progressives to do so.

And if they got it over the finish line a month earlier, McAuliffe might very well have won the election. The failure to get it enacted enhanced the message that Democrats can’t get things done. OTOH McAuliffe’s tone deaf statement might have been enough anyway, especially in the state that was the home to the Confederacy and traitor Robert E. Lee and is still infested with racists who worship him.

Covid question for the hive mind if y’all will indulge:

So I went to a small Xmas party Sunday night: eight people including myself. Except for possibly one couple, everyone’s at least had their two shots.

One couple’s son had gone out-of-town Friday night and came back late Sunday, with a fresh COVID infection in tow. The entire family was tested on Monday: both the couple and their other kid who lives there are negative.

Here’s the conumdrum: I’m a little skeptical that the son left the house COVID-free on Friday and came back Sunday night as a plague rat. My understanding of COVID is that:

A) Son could have had COVID for up to two weeks prior to Sunday and only then developed symptoms.

B) The couple could have been asymptomatic on Sunday but still spreading it.

Right now, I’m trying to quarantine. I was supposed to see family tomorrow and Xmas, but as of this writing I’m cancelling all that out of an abundance of caution. Am I worrying over nothing, or should I just lock myself down until I can get a test?

I’m boosted as of almost two weeks ago. I coincidentally have a doctor’s appointment tonight (got switched to teleconferencing), so I’ll bring this up then.

TIA for any help.

This is good news but goddamn; once again, the people who do the right thing have to bail out the morons actively harming themselves and others.

In addition to my above post, I just found out one of my cousins is working on his second case of COVID. Completely refusing to get any vaccines. He’s got a wife and two teenage boys. In addition to putting their lives at risk, he ruined his wife’s 50th birthday plans, which was last week.

I’m guessing he’s had mild cases both times, so it’s probably bolstering his own “It’s just a bad flu” narrative. Still, the level of hubris and selfishness to jeopardize his family like this is fucking insane.

The fact that the couple tested negative on Monday is a hopeful sign that they weren’t spreading the disease on Sunday. But IANAD — so go with what your doctor says. If they think it’s safe for you to attend, you might still want to wear a mask with the family, just to be very cautious

My general opinion has been, once everyone I’m seeing is vaccinated (and ideally boosted), I’m treating it like the flu, because illness and mortality rates for vaccinated seem to be comparable to a flu. In other words, should probably treat it with more respect than I once treated the flu, but not like we treated Covid pre-vax.

I’m not canceling or avoiding social events any more if everyone is vaccinated. I wear a mask if I go out in public because case rates are high, but once cases get low I’ll be a little more slack about it. I do avoid people who are vaxxed but symptomatic, and I’d cancel anything if I was symptomatic, but transmission is much lower if everyone is vaxxed.

I had a 40 person party a few weeks ago. Everyone is a health care professional and everyone was double vaxxed and boosted. One guy had flu like symptoms and did not come (ultimately tested negative). I don’t feel in the least bit bad about it and none of those people developed Covid.

In the end, vaccines are the solution we have. Vaccinating everyone is going to be how we return to a more normal life. Once we get our shots and avoid contact while actively symptomatic, we have done the right things and should feel safe and comfortable associating with other people who have done the right things.

1. Build yourself a time machine and head on back to the Middle Ages when most people didn’t understand germs/viruses and easy ways to prevent transmission.

2. Get the fuck out of the healthcare profession.

You are maligning the middle ages — they didn’t have germ theory, but they knew that proximity spreads disease.

Just checked my county - 7 day average of about 121 cases a day (700,000 people). A handful of deaths in the last two weeks. People still mask pretty heavily, except inside bars and restaurants…once they step in the door they’re officially eating or drinking. Staff stays masked though.

While they never gave a rats ass.

Yeah. Good one.
Selfish and stupid and infectious.

It’s like a Where’s Waldo book with Waldo an infected know it all somewhere in your contacts.

Unsurprisingly, he got Covid and ended up on a vent.

Then I suddenly I started to get messages from his wife begging me for prayers and to donate to a gofundme to help pay for his medical expenses and financial help for his kids.

I’d suggest that his family start a gofuckyourself campaign.

The primary reason they’re desperate for financial support now is because they refused to take any of the free and cheap steps to protect themselves, their families, or their communities: masking, social distancing, and vaccinations.

I’ll save my thoughts, prayers, and funds, for those who get sick because they can’t get vaccinated and some unvaccinated person spread it to them. Or someone who was fully boosted and got sick because of a breakthrough thanks to being in contact with someone who was unvaccinated.

Article 1, Section 8, of the US Constitution:

Yeah, I get that. I’m out of fucks to give (and my supply chain isn’t getting any better) with antivaxxers having seen too many family and friends get sickened, and several die. No one should have to go through this, and with vaccinations and masking, you don’t have to.

But these antivaxxers are endangering everyone else, not just from covid. We have far more deaths than can be explained by covid alone. Excess mortality from failures to get care, delayed care, and covid not getting diagnosed/identified as COD. Hospital staff already run ragged from covid make more mistakes, have less room for error, and resources are at breaking point (or already broken). That has consequences for everyone - from the delay in getting surgeries or procedures that relieve pain or conditions, to worsened conditions that take longer to recover from.

I tried explaining that to my neighbor (also a lawyer, coincidentally) and he sort gave me a begrudging “Eh” when I pointed out the impact this is having on police, firefighters, hospitals and various front line workers if the system completely breaks down.

I admitted it was hyperbolic, but I said it could kind of spiral into a Walking Dead situation. I probably didn’t help my case with that one, but still; he didn’t seem to concerned with the big picture aspect of the toll COVID is exacting.

A little cool running this morning.

Running app rewarded me with this

[Embedded content]

Congratulations! I kind of like running in those temperatures as long as there’s not much wind. Footing on snow and ice seems actually better in urban areas when it’s that cold because the salt on the roadways no longer works.

My little humble brag from back when I was not as bright and considered myself somewhat of an athlete - I went for a long run in Fargo on a January morning when it was 45 F below and then later that summer went for a short run in western ND when the temp was 105 F above because I wanted to say I had run in 150 degree temperature range in one year.

The 105 sucked way more than the -45. Lasted maybe 3/4 mile before I felt like every drop of moisture had been sucked out of me Can always put on more layers. There’s a limit to how much you can remove.

I’m familiar with that. When one reads through it’s a calm rational version of criticizing just about all our best health measures like remote learning for schools and mandated vaccines. The calm rational approach, coupled with impressive-looking signatures gets through (for better or worse) to many who tune out the hyperbolic approach.

The Great Barrington Declaration is a carbon copy of the ‘32,000 scientists sign declaration against global warming’ disinfo campaign from the Oregon Institute.

This person is going down the cult path. If you choose do do anything about it you can follow the best practice of sandwitching corrent information around the disinformation. If you focus on repeating the disinfo it reinforces it and ignites the disinformer’s ego reflex to dig in.

I have a hard time doing the right thing and will usually make an attempt then quit, flame, then ostracize and block. Not saying that’s the right thing to do but I’m going to let them know there’s a consequence to holding those abhorrent beliefs.

Jeez! ANOTHER “California is collapsing” meme?
Again???

I wonder if it true that CA’s economy is bigger than France’s, because, like France, the Golden State is usually held up by wingers as a dire example of a “failed economy” - usually as a result of “socialism”, i.e. the horrific burden of taxes and regulations that drive away any vestige of entrepreneurialism, and leave the place a hellhole of social problems and economic stagnation.
Which is a great deal of bullshit, of course: because
1. France is still here, and far from “collapse”.
2. California likewise.

Not to say that CA doesn’t have a lot of social/financial/economic problems (in my estimation, due to the fact that it has 40 million people living in a state whose infrastructure planning only expected 32 million or so by 2020), but it’s not quite a Somalia just yet….

That the state is booming, yes, from legitimate sources (we used surpluses from earlier years to pay for lots of help to people hurt by the pandemic).

That the state is collapsing is a standard theme of RWNJs — since we’re the belly of the beast in the eyes of the “government doesn’t work” people (it’s working rather well around here, thank you), we have to be dying on the vine.

Statistics gone mad, today’s report.

According to the CA covid dashboard, cases are increasing significantly, while deaths rates and hospitalizations continue to drop. (We still have — or had as of yesterday — the lowest rate of increase in the country).

Go figure.

Not hard to figure out: maybe more cases in pure numbers, but with a high-enough rate of vaccination, they aren’t going to be as severe or fatal.
