Good luck, but these Republicans lie about everything because their voters insist on being lied to, so it’s not the handicap it would be in a subculture that isn’t entirely about lying to yourself and each other in a quest for power to hurt Americans.

You can take a gander at NYC attendance records yesterday.
There are more than 50 schools with less than 50% student attending. There are some schools with under 30% attendance.
29% of students are absent overall.
Schools will close because teachers are out sick and there’s insufficient numbers to cover in-class sessions. Some districts here are remote for a few weeks to start the new year to minimize overall disruptions.
It’s not ideal at all, and the burden falls hard on those who can’t work remote and lose time from work to make arrangements for their kids. Teachers aren’t day care either. And they shouldn’t bear burden because insufficient numbers of people are vaccinated and covid is spreading rampant, primarily because of unvaccinated and unmasked sociopaths.

I gave up landlines so long ago that those things seem like they’re from an earlier life to me. Once Google Voice came along, I didn’t need one anymore. I guess it’s only been about 10 years, but it seems longer.

I bought my current phone answering machine 25 or 30 years ago. It’s still working. So I also use it for answering my landline. It seems to work because almost all the calls I receive on it are immediate disconnects when the answering machine goes off.
I still have a landline for a couple of reasons.
First, I live next to a heavily traveled commuting road. Which means that the cell towers are pretty much over capacity during morning and evening commute.
Second, iirc 911 is still not as informative on callers location for a cell phone as it is on a land line.
Third, yes, it is an artifact from when landlines were powered remotely and operated during power outages.
Fourth, I have had the land line number for 30 years and many people still have that as my contact number. Some of them, even, I still want to talk to. :)
But yes, at some point, I will probably close out the land line and reroute the number to my cell service or eliminate it.
welp

That won’t happen either. But Justices should be term limited instead of being given lifetime appointments.
I’m extremely skeptical about all these media articles telling us how children are being so damaged by not being able to go to school that we have to risk worsening the pandemic. Kids are tougher than you think, and this propaganda reeks of a corporate agenda.

I think the real goal is to get adults back to work, so the corporations can continue reaping record profits. They don’t care about children or school. The bottom line: it’s about money, as usual.

Yes. Most businesses are only concerned with their bottom line. They figure they can plug new people in and still get the same results. It does not work that way.

theguardian.comVery scary article.
Scary because I believe every word of it.
Thanks for posting this!
I guess that I read this in two ways.
First, I agree, the author does bring up some incidents and trends that are indeed threatening and concerning (and scary too!). And that we are facing a showdown with the magats if they dont fall apart.
Second, the author’s solution to the stated problem of:
“The institutions are all broken and the rightwing is burning down all the institutions!”
is:
“Burn down all the institutions!”
It all sounds to me like another Libertarian DudeBro argument with the usual hand-waving and FUD.
Yes, our institutions have a lot of issues. And many need to be updated.
But destroying them and our two century history of evolving them, is not going to speed up any sort of fix. But it will help by removing another barrier to the authoritarians who want to rule us without limitations.
Again, thank you for posting the article! It gave me a lot to think through.

If we were worried about the kids, we would make sure every home has high speed internet, every kid has a good computer, and install cameras in every classroom so that kids could watch remotely. We could even create ways for the kids to interact online for projects, built on top of Google Docs or something similar.

I think passing laws to ensure free and fair elections is more critical at this point than expanding the court.
Recent polling by @MissouriChamber has former disgraced gov, chased out of office by his own party, who taped his mistress to his gym equipment in his basement, ripped her shirt, spit water into her mouth, and threatened her with pictures at 51% favorable with Mo Republican voters.

I just found out today that a former neighbor of mine from 2006-2012 died 2 months ago from Covid. He was 60.
He was a high powered record exec and quite the character. This pandemic is very real and is going to be here a long time. It is criminal that Republicans are trying to downplay this as much as possible.
