It seems like every day brings another revelation about the unbelievably terrible behavior of the Texas police at the Uvalde atrocity. Now we’re learning that they apparently lied about not being in contact with 911 operators, who were telling them children were calling and begging for help.

The story we were fed a week ago seems to have been purely for two things: portraying the school (in particular the teachers) as incompetent for allowing their school to be entered by a shooter and the cops as brave heroes who did everything they could to prevent these senseless deaths.

My dad is also in that camp. Having just gotten back from a trip to Vegas, I am relatively…undecided. Dry heat does a number on my lips and skin (and exacerbates my wifes nosebleeds), but it also doesn’t make me instantly sweat buckets like humid heat does.

I lived in Bay Area all my life till I moved to Kona. I did a week working a yacht in Florida and it was sorta muggy there: nice in the AM but after lunch was bad. I spent time in Austin and Houston as a kid and it was muggie there, but after rains and at night it was nice. Moving to HI I felt the humidity but it’s 60-80%. When I head of East Coast levels humidity I can def get a sense of it. Sounds no bueno.

The national legislature passed a law over the weekend that could lead to the closure of La Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua. Which is the Spanish Language Academy of Nicaragua. Why? Because the organization, which basically works to promote the use of Spanish, is being assisted by La Real Academia Española (RAE), which is considered the mothership of all things Spanish language. Apparently non-governmental organizations from other countries are just too much for the Ortega dictatorship. And this is not the only organization being shut down, there are dozens more. Blargh.

They want to scare people into using their service. They showed me one of the notices from a while ago mentioning a rate hike. I even heard one of these Inspire people say that if we do not sign up with them our bills will go up to $1000 a month. I told the guy who said it that I will go to Goal Zero and buy solar panels. The con-man (that is what they are) it is illegal to buy them ourselves. I got out of there as soon as I could.

Over the two decades I’ve lived in the Phoenix area, I’ve learned that 105F is absolutely the upper limit of what I consider “normal,” even with hats and water Above that and I’m looking to get inside as soon as possible. And yes, Humidity Matters. During the alleged monsoon season, the usually well below 10% humidity spikes up past 30 or 40 percent. Combined with 110F + temps, it’s enormously oppressive.

The worst afternoon I experienced here included over temps over110F degrees, a dust storm, and a power failure. So I couldn’t drive over to my mother’s because of the dust storm and power failure and the AC wasn’t running, so it was hot, and forget about opening up any windows. I took a sheet out of my linen closet, dampened in the tub, wrapped myself in it and took a nap until the power came back on. What else could I do?

I live in what would be called a gentrification neighborhood in L.A. I have watched as the number of lanes on the main thoroughfare was reduced from four to two. The number of stop signs throughout the neighborhood has doubled. Turn signals have been added to several busy intersections. New traffic lights at many intersections. Curbs redone for disabled and stroller accessibility. Plastic bollards installed to keep traffic away from the corners at pedestrian crossings. And until now, I didn’t even think of it in terms of ethnicity or class. How blind I can be.

When I went to Malaysia and Vietnam for 2.5 weeks back in July of 2011 I periodically checked the weather report for Philly (where I lived at the time.)

It was pretty much 88 F or so every day in Malaysia and very muggy. Plus it rained quite a bit. But to be expected for a tropical country pretty close to the equator. Wear some nice cotton batik, drink plenty of fluids, and hope everything dries out overnight.

The entire time it was *warmer* in Philadelphia since they had a streak of 90+ F days during that period.

There’s a relatively busy road not far from me that isn’t all that hard to navigate, but it has FIVE DIFFERENT NAMES in a three mile stretch so non-locals constantly get confused about where they are at. This causes multiple slowdowns / u-turns / quick lane changes/ etc. There have been many-a-fenderbender along that stretch.

Thanks for posting this! The horses are cool, in all their decorative variety, and I hope they can keep the handcraft traditions going.

We’ve gone through Lindsborg, Kansas quite a few times on the 1-70/I-35 route from Denver to DFW & Austin. Always have to stop and do a data hunt — they have large dala horses on the streets, scattered around town, each with a different theme to the paint job and usually a lousy pun attached. Several nice little tourist shops with all sorts of Scandahoovian knickknackery — mostly Swedish, but you can get Norsk and Danish souvenirs as well. Good memories!

I drove from Illinois for a job interview at the Doubletree in Philly. It was at 8PM at a conference I didn’t attend. I was wet from sweat getting in, but it was almost as bad leaving at 8:30PM. I had planned to drive to western PA before getting a hotel, but I only made it as far as King of Prussia. TBF, I am a mess in lots of tight urban traffic environments, but this was “tight.”
