I do remember the time period as helmets became required to play in the NHL. And for a while there there a few dinosaurs like Craig MacTavish playing in the 1990s without one.
The right side of my face is getting very strong. Every time I think I moved the left side, it’s the right side giving a good hard tug and bringing the left on over. I can even move my right ear so hard, you can see a little movement of the left ear.
When I get the left side back, I’m going to have to put it in training. It’s ‘funny-looking’ from here on out.
Credit to the Birds. That was a ballsy play.

In (somewhat) fairness to Mctavish, he retired in 1998. CTE was unknown then (though there was evidence of repeated concussions causing health issues. Ask Pat Lafontaine).

In no way would I ever hold a player responsible for the consequences of the game. We live in a football culture, and we are still in the knowing-nearly-nothing days of head injuries.

I’m getting pretty proficient with the Mastodon API. Not using any external libraries or modules at all, just straight-up low level PHP.
The difficult part used to be managing the “multipart/form-data” content-type required to upload images/video, but PHP 8 has a built-in method to help upload files in this format, the CURLFile class.

Satan in the Superbowl. What a world, what a world.
Flyers won their first Stanley Cup in 1974. I was Center City with a friend who worked auctions. I had a RD350 Yamaha that I bought for a song.
Torque monster. We left and went up I-95 towards northeast Philly.
Cars were flashing lights, people screaming….
Flyers beat the Bruins, in Philly that afternoon.
By the time I got my friend back to NE Philly, it was fully engulfed.
I went down towards my home via Frankford Avenue. Frankford Avenue was a movie. There was abandoned city buses. A thousand people screaming and dancing and just happy. I watched a LIGHTPOLE get torn down. And then the boys tried to run it through a city bus.
Nuts. But no violence except on inanimate objects.
It was a release of futility of decades. It was incredible. No person was threatened. If you was there you just danced.
I was on my scooter, and people just kept handing me beers and hugs and kisses and it was incredible.
WE WON!
Guy laid a Bruins jersey down in the middle of Frankford Ave and I burned through it a few times.
By the time I got back to Fairhill I was picking up my girl and the hood was on fire. I had to make a pass in front of my neighborhood boys, and the only helmet I owned was on my girls head.
It torqued and I put my girl on the ground like I laid her down.
Me? I landed on my head from the blown wheelie.
And that, ladies and gentlemen is why I be as I be today.
Stitches came 3 hours later from a Candy Striper (for you old heads) in Port Richmond.
Stiches were removed a week later in Atlantic City by the hotels that no longer exist..

Protests erupt in France amid ‘unjust and brutal’ proposal to raise pension eligibility age
Nearly a million people took to the streets of cities across France on Saturday during the fourth round of nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the country’s pension eligibility age from 62 to 64.
The French Interior Ministry said an estimated 963,000 protesters rallied in Paris, Marseilles, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse, and other cities and towns large and small for the fourth straight day of demonstrations, Agence France-Pressereports.
The French are out in the streets when Macron wants to jack up the retirement age.

Bernie Parent was an incredible goalie for the time. After expansion. After Original Six. There are videos. The Flyers team was built around “not being bullied or beaten up”.
His career was ended by Phil Esposito and a stick to the eye with the old goalie mask. Yes. He was special. The game was different, and it was stack the pads and throw yourself into the shot. He excelled.

Part of Gretzky’s thing was apparently he was hard to hit. His rink awareness was very good and he was nimble enough on skates that he was hard to check solidly. He was not that large, especially compared to someone like Lemieux.
And he did have protectors. Later in Gretzky’s career it was people like Marty McSorley. One of the early ones was Dave Semenko. Enforcers with some ability to skate were pretty valuable in the NHL in the 20th century.

It’s when their primarily criteria about a person is what religion (or even sub-sect of a religion) the person is or claims to be. And that totally trumps the person’s character and actions which *are* what the person really is.
So total trust is then given and declared about charlatans and liars while the people who are out there doing the good deeds, trying to live a proper life, etc. are ignored, chastised, and treated as inferiors for not belonging to the proper group.

It’s been a fine Superb Owl Sunday here. We went over to look after the grandkids for a while so daughter and son-in-law could go our for brunch unaccompanied by a toddler and a preschooler. I got home at 8 p.m. MST from the demo event at Monarch Mountain. First one for me this winter traveling by myself with the company truck and travel reimbursements. I had to fill it up on the way home, $4.09/gal in Poncha Springs, CO, cost $84 dollars, on my boss’s dime.
Doing it all over again this Saturday at Purgatory Ski Resort north of Durango. This trip will be really fun, I’m driving the company truck to Silverton, CO and meeting up with the other dude who’s helping me run the demo tent on Saturday… and we’re going skiing. I’ll need climbing skins, a backpack, shovel probe, beacon, the works. Haven’t kitted myself out like that for a day of skiing since before the covid pandemic began.
Yeah, no chairlifts on Friday, but it will be epic. Just look at a Google Maps satellite view of the surrounding area of Silverton, CO.

I’ve been working since 7 this morning, am now just unwinding.
So we make high grade lurks, basically big long sticks you hold in front of you and use it as a balance/counterbalance/wizard staff while you telemark ski and my dude in Silverton was making them. Well, Silverton is, uh, very remote. When he runs out of ink for his label printer he uses to ship the lurks he can’t just go to Office Depot, that’s a whole day’s trip. He completed most of the lurks and I was tasked to retrieve all the parts yet to be assembled and bring them back to headquarters. The truck’s suspension was weighted down mightily.

That’s fifty cents cheaper than the gas station right down the road from me. There’s like three gasoline distributor companies for a wide swath where I live, these folks supply gas/diesel to gas stations (a lot of times they own the gas station), ranches, ski areas, airports. WASHINGTON — U.S. military leaders on Sunday said they were in the dark about the exact nature and purpose of airborne objects shot down over the United States and Canada since Friday.
Unlike a balloon shot down off the coast of South Carolina Feb. 4, described by officials as spy aircraft, it’s unclear how the most recent objects stay aloft and move along, Gen. Glen VanHerck, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), said at a media briefing Sunday.
“I’m not going to categorize them as balloons,” he said. “We’re calling them objects for a reason. I’m not able to categorize how they stay aloft.”
After the briefing, a defense official added that there was “no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity with these recent takedowns.”

I’m assuming that the debris of the three recent downings have not been recovered or analyzed yet.
And I am not certain that the question itself is fully clear. Some folks have been asking whether the smaller objects were dropped off by the larger balloon. Which, might put a different perspective to the ‘propulsion’ question.

hi
In local news, I’m off to the VA in Sidney Tuesday for my now monthly refills of my epilepsy drugs. I’m going to try to convince the new RN that this is really inconvenient both for her and me. If not, then the VA pays me travel pay when I go to the VA. Put the money in my checking account.
Someone above was wondering the purpose of the “He Gets Us” adverts which appeared on the Super Bowl today (but were leaked to Reddit’s r/Atheism and picked up by Wonkette before they actually played). (Reddit has also been flooding r/Atheism and r/ReligiousFruitcake with bunches of banner adverts and posts which users find difficult to turn off.)
The purpose is “flirty fishing” without the good parts. The idea is to present Christianity as somehow “hip” or whatever it is the kids these days (tm) use. No Christian of any denomination needs those ads, no faithful member of any other religion is going to be convinced by them.
In atheistic discussions, the consensus seems to be to try to capture so-called lukewarm Christians (those who make a vague claim to believe in God and Jesus but do not attend religious functions like churches and worship services). All denominations have started what appears to be a death spiral as younger generations are the least-religious in the USA’s history.
What the adverts do is present such a bland version of Jesus that he can be all things to all people. What they don’t do is something most religions of any sort don’t do: Truth and Reconciliation (acknowledgement of abuse of their members or washing the world in blood for whole societies who did not believe as they—case in point, the Catholic Archdiocese of San Diego just announced they will seek bankruptcy protection to hide their assets, er, restructure for the deluge of sexual abuse and rape cases against them).
The opinion of many atheists is that the adverts are dangerous for four reasons.
a) The people known to be behind them: The Green Family of “you can’t have contraception if you work for our company” and “we’ll pay terrorists to steal artefacts from Iraq” fame
2) The Alliance Defending Bigotry Freedom, Family Research Council, and church groups which wish to kill Teh Geyhs, Teh Joos, and atheists (like most of history)
iii) If you go to their Website, the first thing they collect from you is your E-mail address and personal information (for followup and probable endless spam to get you to go to a hate church)
D) They are wrapping it up in a “bait-and-switch” campaign, very much like any other controlling group which seeks to subsume your personality into the goals of the group. If they had Truth (tm), they wouldn’t need to hide it.
The concern is those who feel lost, cut off from society (particularly with the pandemic), abandoned, elderly, &c., prime targets for proselytisation and conversion.

Dunno but ACA gave my family insurance for 9 years before we gained Medicare. I kinda miss ACA pricing. Fuck Medicare I want back on ACA.
indirectly?
People in their pre-Medicare years are getting better care (or any care) through ACA, so when they come eligible for Medicare they don’t have as many long-neglected conditions reaching crisis point.

re: #270 Captain Ron
But that depends on if you need a lot of healthcare or not. If you need expensive medical care then MEdicare comes out ahead. So far I haven’t needed any. My wife got back fusion surgery on ACA and it was $7500 patient cost. Then she had hip and knee replacement on Medicare and they were a thousand dollars at most.
I’re: #271 sagehen
I’d be surprised if it didn’t for that reason as well as the additional emphasis on preventative measures. Having regular colonoscopies, for example, nipped a lot of cases of colon cancers in the bud (pun intended).

I believe the entire focus of the ACA is on those who are not yet eligible for Medicare, so probably not.

The touchy-feely ‘He Gets Us’ Super Bowl ads hide a dark truth (MSNBC, this morning)
The advertisements seem to recast Jesus for a new era, but their real purpose is rehabilitating pro-Trump evangelicals.
Among the advertisements you’ll see during Sunday’s Super Bowl, in between promotions for cars or candy or beer, will be plugs for a completely different kind of product: Jesus. A nonprofit organization called the Signatry is behind the $20 million buy, the latest in an ad campaign titled “He Gets Us.” The two new ads, part of a larger $100 million effort that launched last March, might seem like an earnest attempt to recast Jesus in a contemporary light. In truth, the campaign, funded by wealthy evangelical families, is aimed at rehabilitating the donors’ own tarnished image in the post-Trump era.
The He Gets Us campaign’s previous ads, which have been running on television for nearly a year, portray Jesus less as a messiah and more as a sympathetic and brave friend who will redeem us from the harms of divisiveness. An ad titled “Dinner Party,” which says that Jesus wanted to host all people for a feast of compassion, describes him as “radically inclusive,” someone who “went out of his way to care for people whom society had rejected” and “embraced people in historically oppressed races and ethnic communities.”

The Pentagon has pointedly declined to describe the latest atmospheric intruders as “balloons.” Given the altitude of the most recent one, a paltry 20,000 feet, I am beginning to suspect that they are solar powered drones somewhat like the Airbus Zephyr that set an endurance record last August. This would also be consistent with the “octagonal” shape reported for the Lake Huron object.
Zephyr solar-powered drone smashes record with 2-month-long flight
This is significant because a powered drone could remain in one area for an extended period, or be sent to a specified area at will. This is in contrast with a balloon which (absent some sort of dirigible capability) goes where the wind blows it. Of course, dirigibility necessarily implies some sort of propulsion. This suggests that there could be a kind of solar powered blimp, a balloon with low powered motors to give it some degree of maneuverability and course selection.

T am beginning to suspect that they are solar powered drones somewhat like the Airbus Zephyr that set an endurance record last August.
They’re weather balloons. Sorry.
Flying solar-powered long-endurance aircraft in the Northern polar regions in winter means hardly any power can be harvested by solar panels to propel the aircraft and keep it aloft. These sorts of planes are very expensive and are tracked very carefully by their operators and they carry virtually zero payload. When they are test flown they tend to fly at equatorial regions where the amount of sunlight is more reliable and abundant.
OTOH there’s at least one weather station in Alaska and the Aleutians that launches disposable weather balloons which typically fly East into Canadian airspace, never to be seen again after they deflate and drop to the ground. Never to be seen again that is until NORAD started looking really REALLY closely at every little ping and glitch on their radar screens and sending interceptors up to have a good look and shoot them down.
Got Valentine’s Day plans? Mon looks like a nice day with sunny skies and mild temps! On Tues, you may decide to stay home with your sweetheart as cooler temps, increasing clouds and blustery conditions are expected. Lake Huron is about 45 degrees north, the central Yukon (Yellowknife specifically) 62 degrees. This is not the high Arctic with “hardly any” available sunlight, especially this far past the solstice. As for the expense and need for close control, this is true of experimental types seen up to this point, but there is no reason at all to generalize this to a later application of the technology. Sunlight is certainly more abundant in the equatorial regions but I have no idea why you think it would be “more reliable” given the very frequent cloud cover. Perhaps you have never been there.

We’re at 41°N latitude here. There is a massive solar farm in Scottsbluff providing power to the public power district. All the places here with no electricity have solar-powered irrigation pumps, railroad switches, &c. All this seems to work in the dead of winter.
Speaking of the dead of winter, the snowpile in the centre of my street is still taller than I am from the blizzard on December 23. Two douchecanoes decided to drag race up the street from US-26 on each side of the snow version of a Jersey barrier, and wound up losing control of their cars at the end of the block when, as it turns out, brakes are shyte on ice. Both cars wound up in the Beerline Canal at the end of the street. It took a couple hours to pull the cars out, and the sheriff’s department took them off to the county clink.

I live at about 52 deg N. Sunlight at high (and low) latitudes in winter is a tenth or less than that of summer, energy-wise. These are not the best places to rely on solar power to keep aircraft aloft.
The new sightings talk about “car-sized” objects, not like the Chinese balloons with very long struts carrying large arrays of solar panels. The solar energy collection capability just isn’t there for sustained powered flight for these smaller objects, especially in the far North. The other way to stay aloft for long periods is to use balloons but they’re difficult to manoeuvre in a desired direction and being very large sail-like structures the wind pressure on the balloon will tend to overpower any propulsion system and make them fly East over North America.
We’re getting very limited information about these encounters from the US military which is understandable but that lack of detail is also causing a lot of wild speculation. Worst case it turns into a Cuban Missile Crisis panic, not helped by the constant pressure to start a war with China from various tankies.

These people have no idea who Jesus was. I have yet to see one of them bring a lawsuit or propose a law that feeds and takes care of the homeless. Christians have become the genital police. And they wonder why no one goes to church.

Putting an ad in front of the Superb Owl audience is meant to: 1) Trigger the libs somehow, 2) encourage the conservative base to continue to be assholes, and 3) potentially set up a victim complex if the ad somehow got denied air time.

A small low pressure system brought us some rain Sunday night as it turned eastward over northern Baja. About a half inch of rain, which is good for the loquats.
The low center is pretty easy to find as it wraps around the water vapor from the Gulf of California and brings the desert rain:
The heavy rains in Dec and Jan helped the California drought situation, but the low desert has been exceedingly dry and didn’t get much rain then. They can surely use the rain now.

Ohio abortion law meant weeks of ‘anguish,’ ‘agony’ for couple whose unborn child had organs outside her body (CNN, February 8, 2023)
Not just agony, but financial ruin.
Just when Beth and Kyle Long received the worst news of their life, an Ohio law made their searing pain even worse.
For four years, the Longs tried to have a baby, enduring multiple rounds of grueling fertility treatments. In September 2022, Beth finally became pregnant.
But an ultrasound four months later showed that most of the baby’s organs were outside the body.
The condition, called limb body wall complex, is rare.
“It’s just not survivable,” a doctor involved in Beth’s care told CNN.
“They will die. There’s no way there will be a life,” said Dr. Alireza Shamshirsaz, a spokesperson for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, who was not involved in Beth’s care.
The condition posed dangers for Beth too, and the bigger the baby was, the higher the risk of complications, including dangerous bleeding that might require a hysterectomy. They say their doctor urged them to terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible.

Gotta love conservative writers.
The new red wave is already here
Recent U.S. Census data underscore a grim reality for the biggest blue states: More people are leaving states such as California, New York and Illinois than moving to them.
The exodus is real: California lost nearly 350,000 residents in 2022, while New York lost about 300,000 and Illinois saw more than 140,000 go elsewhere, per Census numbers. Other states, including New Jersey (-64,231), Massachusetts (-57,292) and Pennsylvania (-39,957), also saw large numbers of residents say goodbye.
But other states, such as Florida and Texas, saw large gains in population, with Florida adding an eye-popping 444,484 residents and Texas adding 470,708. Other population winners include North Carolina (99,796 residents added), South Carolina (+84,030), Tennessee (+81,646) and Georgia (+81,406).
Not coincidentally, all these southern states except North Carolina have Republican governors, while California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have Democratic governors.
Couldn’t be due to home prices, traffic, etc. No, it’s all blue vs red politics. And he sees this as a GOP wave instead of a dilution of red to purple and eventually blue. Like all blue people are leaving CA, NY, IL, etc., leaving those states with more red voters?

And yes, ideologists are always willing to sacrifice a few individuals and let them suffer for (their concept of) The Greater Good.

‘Christocrat’ Rick Scarborough Aims to Take Over Texas School Boards From the ‘Godless Educrats’
In 2021, Rick Scarborough, a self-described “Christocrat,” strident anti-LGBTQ activist, and longtime critic of public education, set his sites on taking over school boards in three Houston-area school districts. Scarborough was optimistic about his chances of having conservative Christians take over the school board because, he said, “most people don’t vote.”
“We’re gonna win this Houston school board if the church shows up,” Scarborough bragged, and indeed candidates he backed were ultimately able to defeat two board members.
Inspired by this showing, Scarborough announced in late 2022 that he had begun preparing to target school boards all across the state in 2023.
“We are already preparing for our next big project: the school board elections that take place in May,” Scarborough declared. “We’re laying the ground [work] now for that election. Kanye West’s antisemitic tirade led to many ‘acts of hate’ against Jews: Rolling Stone
Rapper Kanye West’s antisemitic tirade last year, where he declared his “love” for Hitler and said he was gearing up to go “def con III on Jewish people,” inspired antisemitism on college campuses and even physical attacks on Jewish people, Rolling Stone reports.
The Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt told the magazine: “Kanye West’s repeated antisemitic remarks - and his dredging up some of the worst anti-Jewish tropes imaginable — are inspiring people to commit real-world acts of hate.”
Tweets with the “Ye is Right” slogan reached nearly 5 million users on Twitter. In the real world, it inspired vandalism from coast to coast, “with ‘Defcon III’ scrawled on a university walkway in Wisconsin, the words ‘Kanye West is right’ and ‘Kill All Jews’ written on the wall of a California high school bathroom; a swastika and ‘I love Kanye’ chalking at a high school in Florida, and ‘Kanye is Right’ written on the welcome sign of an Orthodox synagogue in New York City,” Rolling Stone’s report stated.
In one incident, a fake customer called a Jewish-owned restaurant in Los Angeles to order the “Kanye special” before adding, “Death to all the Jews.” A Jewish man in Central Park in New York City was attacked by a man who yelled “F*** you, Jew!” and “Kanye 2024!” And last year, the “Goyim Defense League” displayed a banner on a freeway overpass in Los Angeles reading “Honk if you know Kanye is right about the Jews,” Rolling Stone reported.

I kicked myself for leaving there after only a year and a half in 1993, thinking at the time that if I held out long enough, things would eventually turn around.

The new red wave is already here
Couldn’t be due to home prices, traffic, etc. No, it’s all blue vs red politics. And he sees this as a GOP wave instead of a dilution of red to purple and eventually blue. Like all blue people are leaving CA, NY, IL, etc., leaving those states with more red voters?
I mean, come. on.
In 2020, more than 17 million Californians voted. 12 million of them voted D, 5 million voted R.
So if 3 million California D’s move to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada… California will still be overwhelmingly D. But TX, AZ, NM and NV will be a lot D-er than they used to be.
New Yorkers and Illinois-ans moving to Florida? Probably for the weather. And they bring their D voting habits with them.

Yeah, it’s pretty good, I’ve got most of his stuff since then & tho the lyrics are a little less complex than usual, it’s pretty good.
Pennsylvania’s acting attorney general is charging five men from Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations across the state with child sexual abuse crimes.Acting AG Michelle Henry said Wednesday her office will prosecute men from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler and Lancaster counties for allegedly abusing children between 1998 and 2009.
Henry said after four other men from Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations were arrested last October on sexual abuse charges, a grand jury investigated whether sexual abuse had happened elsewhere in the church.
“These cases…are disturbing and sad, but this one in particular digs deeper, because in this case, all of the defendants and all of the victims come from the same religious organization,” Henry said.
One survivor was as young as 5 when they were assaulted. One man allegedly abused his own grandchild. Another was an uncle. Another was a 30-year-old, claiming he wanted to marry a 15-year-old girl. Church elders approved their courtship so long as they were chaperoned, but the man managed to meet with her alone and assaulted her.

Control, a perverted sense of pride/accomplishment (“I got away with marrying a teenager even though it’s a societal taboo”), a bit of “grass is greener” syndrome, the intensity of false feelings coming from a relationship with someone whose emotions are running at an all-time high.

Yeah, older individuals are much more experienced and jaded than a teenager in terms of relationships, so, easier to bamboozle.
re: #421 darthstar

Yeah, which is super weird to me. I mean, hell, I never went on any dates as a teenager, and was basically rejected all the way up until a certain Mrs. Fish came along, but that’s never sparked a perverse desire for any underage women. But I suppose, when you’re an incel, you’ll go for anything you can get, and young women are impressionable and susceptible to men whom they perceive as even moderately rich and powerful.

The special grand jury’s report is expected to recommend charges against either Trump or some of his allies such as attorney John Eastman, and Willis’ office will then have to go to a separate grand jury and successfully present their case in order to secure an official indictment.
Let us hope this is true. It’s really hard to believe we have gone this long with no major figures indicted.

Parts of Ga. grand jury’s report on election interference by Trump and allies will be released this week
A final report produced by an Atlanta-area special grand jury investigating efforts by President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia will be remain mostly sealed as a local prosecutor considers charges in the case, a judge ruled.
But Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney said in an order released Monday that he will make public three sections of the grand jury report, including the panel’s introduction and conclusion as well as a section in which the grand jury “discusses its concern that some witnesses may have lied under oath during their testimony to the grand jury.”
McBurney scheduled the release for Thursday.

Which they are to a point, since they’re still in the mindset that all adults are figures of authority and should be deferred to on all decision-making. It also helps that the younger they are, the less likely they are to be financially independent and capable of providing for themselves, thus making them easier to manipulate with threats of being cut off and tossed out if they “misbehave.”

I’m sorry, but at this point in the game I’m really finding it hard to imagine a scenario where anybody higher than Eastman faces indictments. ‘The CEO of anti-woke’ is considering a run for president
Vivek Ramaswamy, the “CEO of Anti-Woke Inc” who’s a wealthy author and a regular on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, is thinking about running for president, Politico reported.
“We were taught that you satisfy a moral hunger by going to Ben and Jerry’s and ordering a cup of ice cream with some social justice sprinkles on top,” he said at a dinner event in Iowa. “But we’ve learned in the last couple of years that you cannot satisfy that moral hunger with fast food. And the good news is I think we’re getting hungry again. And I think there’s an opportunity to fill that hunger with something deeper.”
Politico reported, “He is exploring a run for president, testing, among other things, whether his warnings about the dangers of ‘wokeism’ and socially-responsible investing — in business vernacular what’s called environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing — has political currency with Republican politicians, business leaders and, yes, farmers.”
Ramaswamy, the son of Indian immigrants and a successful biotech entrepreneur who earned his CEO moniker in a New Yorker article, says he has “developed a vision for American national identity that I have deep conviction for and is the product of my own journey of having lived the gifts that this country has afforded me.”

That’s going to be a problem with the racist shitweasels who make up the core of the Republican Party.
Thoughts on last nights game and festivities:
I cooked some amazing food in the early afternoon. Smoked Pork Tenderloin. Then I decided to put some broccoli and brussels sprouts on the smoker as it cooled. Had them marinating in Italian Dressing, Salt, Pepper, and Hot Sauce for a day. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Also, made a cheesecake. Ate it all during the second half.
Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing. For my money, one of the most powerful American songs that has existed. The symbolism and connection of word and history are incredible. When I think about the first lines, “…Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heav’n ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty…”; I think of slaves singing, “Go Down, Moses”, I think of troops in the Civil War singing, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Billie Holiday singing “Strange Fruit”, Stevie Wonder singing “Living For the City”, Mellie Mel and “The Message”, Public Enemy, “Fight the Power”, Ice-T “Six in the Morning”, and Whitney Houston singing the National Anthem. I could go on for days about the Black National Anthem. It hits all the feels.
I also love Chris Stapleton. Love his Bluesy style. Did a great job as well.
The game was a very good game. Very well played. Having and recognizing two black starting quarterbacks does matter. Still plenty of people (including some in the ownership and coaching class) who work against the very idea of having a black quarterback. Some of these same people have also fought against the idea of the white cornerback as well- I could go on for days about this, but maybe another time.
What I thought was best about this game, is that there were not very many mistakes made by either team. Sure there was the fumble by Hurts, and a couple of missed tackles and bad angles. All in all, this was a well played game. It was more about each team putting their best on the field, and seeing what the result would be.
Rhi-Rhi was fine. Production was fine. I don’t always care about Halftime Shows, except for the Dre/Snoop show last year.
Don’t care about commercials anymore- but the Premature Electrification one was pretty funny.

Much like a lot of Christmas “traditions,” a lot of Western concepts about marriage are at best no older than the Victorian Era. Marrying for love didn’t become the norm in Western cultures until the mid-to-late 1800s, with most marriages prior to that still very much of the “her hand for a bit of land” variety. Same with diamond engagement rings, those only started becoming a norm when large diamond mines became a thing in Africa around the turn of the century. And a month’s salary for an engagement ring was an advertising gimmick dreamt up during the height of the Depression.

Which is just opting to lose. And letting any and all higher-ups walk away with zero consequences. And essentially guaranteeing further abuse of power since the precedent continues to exist that one can flout election rules and try to intimidate results since there is no meaningful punishment for attempting to do so.
And the post-election fines for financial violations and other shenanigans are trivial since the election results are not overturned. A cheap price to pay to get political power and hands on the levers to allow crony appointments, no-bid contracts to donors, and the other corrupt practices that will bring in a lot more cash than any fine took out.

That’s sort of the problem with being a political junkie, our part in the game is purely as spectators watching from the cheap seats. Our careers are not made or broken by the possibility that Trump could face charges and then walk because one doughy sack on the jury simply sat with crossed arms and refused to entertain anything less than acquittal no matter how airtight the case is. We’re not the ones who are deluding ourselves that getting a conviction against John Eastman will somehow ward others away from committing electoral crimes, while the men in charge walk because they’ve the money and influence to walk free.
Conservatives Are Pissed at Chick-fil-A’s ‘Woke’ Sandwich
Donald Trump “has insulted Mr. DeSantis in casual conversations, describing him as ‘Meatball Ron’, an apparent dig at his appearance, or ‘Shutdown Ron,’ a reference to restrictions the governor put in place at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic,” the New York Times reports.
if this country, as a whole, had any self awareness, it would be ashamed and embarassed.
Let’s be realistic for a sec: If Trump had never run for president, had never done more on the national political scene than been a very loud crank, he wouldn’t be in half the legal mess he has been. And he would have continued to be the rich asshole who kept avoiding accountability, not because prosecutors feared jurors taking his side out of fanatical devotion, but because he’d never face legal consequences that outweighed the cost of simply getting him in the courtroom.

With the exception of California, the mentioned blue states get freaking cold during winter. Older folks heading for a warmer climate (especially as the boomers age) is probably driving some of the exodus too.
My sister hates winters here but as long as her children live in Illinois, she’s not relocating. In any case, she hates both Florida and Texas politics. I think there is a danger that people moving down to racist states gradually succumb to those views, especially if they aren’t minorities who are the targets of the legislation.

There have been young people who went into “Conservative” media thinking real media was biased against them, then found that the “Conservative” media they worked for was actually biased, and expected them to lie to their audience. Growing up Conservative creates extra challenges in maturing into a responsible adult, and many fail due to those challenges.

That fell by the wayside as the right became openly authoritarian and decided that they can pick winners and losers.
re: #447 Smith25’s Liberal Thighs
What I thought was best about this game, is that there were not very many mistakes made by either team. Sure there was the fumble by Hurts, and a couple of missed tackles and bad angles. All in all, this was a well played game. It was more about each team putting their best on the field, and seeing what the result would be.
What’s frustrating from an Eagles fan viewpoint is that Hurts just doesn’t fumble the ball. He’s had, like, two all year long. Unfortunately, that was one of them.
You take away that fumble and it’s a 35-31 Eagles win.
re: #490 Crush White Nationalism
There have been young people who went into “Conservative” media thinking real media was biased against them, then found that the “Conservative” media they worked for was actually biased, and expected them to lie to their audience. Growing up Conservative creates extra challenges in maturing into a responsible adult, and many fail due to those challenges.
I’ve come across young early-university age adults who have swallowed the conservative propaganda hook, line, and sinker. (Alternatively, they were just spouting it continuously is the one forum as an attention-getting-device.) Whether they get swayed from these viewpoints eventually I am not sure will happen since it plays so well to certain behavior patterns.

Could say the same about them giving up the long punt return. The result could have hinged either way based upon a number of different single plays. (Making the assumption though that most other play results and play-calls remain the same.)

This is why it adds up to a team game. Any one of those mistakes could have resulted in a different outcome; the combination of them sealed their fate. Anyone who attempts to blame one specific play, or person, needs to look at all the other points in the game where something could have gone differently and materially affected the outcome.
Remember Eagles fans: the game took place in Arizona, where losers do not have to recognize outcomes. Have a special NFL panel look into the referees and have the Cyber Ninjas do a point recount.

Kari Lake was there, she could empanel such non-partisan players like Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch to lead the commission (all in order to turn PA back to Red I presume :-))

Well you can’t expect them to give a red card to Sleazy E without him melting down on THE BIRD!
Marc’s a screwed up guy, but he’s very public about it, which I think helps others who have similar problems.
Despite an entire evening of Chase squirming uncomfortably, there was another man on the dais who felt even worse. In fact, roaster and caustic comic Marc Maron told Howard Stern last week, the special almost made him quit comedy altogether. Back in 2002 when the roast was recorded, Maron remembers, he was just an angry guy whose attitude was too dark even for a Chevy Chase flogging. “Because when you’re angry, if you’re insulting somebody, it’s to hurt them, right? So my tone isn’t quite right.”
“It was one of the worst nights of my life,” Maron says of a roast that Chase himself seemed to want no part of. As a kid, Maron admired Chase but by 2002, the up-and-coming comic was ready to tear into him. He had a series of jokes that looked good on paper, but in practice, the insults didn’t go over nearly so well.
Thankfully, producers boosted Maron’s meager laughs in post-production “because I got up on stage, it must have been 2000 people, and I was just bombing,” he says. Maron kept delivering misfire after misfire in front of “everyone I know in comedy. At some point, I’m like ‘oh my god, this is going horribly.’ The jokes were good, but I literally like I could feel my personality disintegrating.”
After the show, Maron retreated to his hotel room and reconsidered his career choices. “I’m literally on the verge of tears,” he says. “I’m like, I can’t do this anymore.”
Years later, Maron understands that his own vitriol worked against him. For roast jokes to work, “there has to be a warm-heartedness to it.” Friends today can’t quite understand his painful memory since the broadcast makes it appear as if he’d done well, but Maron knows the sweetened laughs were pure fiction and his jokes were met with dead silence despite 2000 people in the room. “There’s no more feeling alone,” he says. “That is the loneliest feeling in the world.”

I’d like to think that this would cause a great backlash from parents in FL but I’m doubtful after growing up in a state listening to folks talk about reducing funding to state colleges and universities because “why spend that money unless we can make them stay in the state?”
Students expelled after ‘bold and unhinged’ racist video ignites turmoil at Catholic high school
A group of Catholic high school school girls in Philadelphia have been expelled after they videoed themselves spraying black paint on their faces and making racist remarks. The video had ignited protests against racism.
A Black parent at St. Hubert’s Catholic High School said the video was sent to her daughter as well as other Black students. It’s not known if the girls in the video were the ones who sent it.
Philadelphia NAACP President Catherine Hicks said it’s “extremely disheartening to have to address this, especially during the observance of Black History Month, that honors the accomplishments and rich history of Black people.”
“The video showing the egregious acts of Philadelphia Archdiocese white female students spray painting a young lady’s face black is totally unacceptable,” the statement continued. To say the act was done in jest “is not only appalling but shows us the continued cycle of racism that we are constantly fighting against.”
