Looks very low order / low brisance, no shattered glass or significant structural damage. Vehicle exploded but the shockwave didn’t carry very far. Amateur hour.

BTW: a couple of minutes perusing local media sites added a bit of clarification to the Niagara Falls explosion story (which doesn’t sound - to me, anyway - quite like the “car bomb/terrorist attack” some idiots seem to be trying to make it out to be) - I heard two eyewitness reports saying that the car was speeding up to the bridge crossing from the American side; swerved and flipped, and then went up in a fireball - reasons yet undetermined.

Still sounds like a weird incident, but not like the usual Middle-East-style “car-bombing” one would expect.

Which I’m sure won’t stop The Usual Crowd Of Morons from “speculating”….

Likely the blast occurred out of frame, and the visible vehicle parts were thrown into the booth. As there is no visible blast damage/scorching to the visible pillars

Wouldn’t be first time that a vehicle disassembled after hitting a toll barrier, and depending on the vehicle type (hybrid/full-electric/ICE), you could account for the damage.

‘how could there not be an ad blacklist for some of this stuff???’

One user, Avi Bueno, called out Twitter CEO Linda Yacarrino:

“It took me about 30 seconds to find X placing advertisements for @TheAthletic, @ShopTemu, @ActionNetworkHQ, and @Visit_NJ alongside a search for ‘killjews,’” he said. “This place is broken and advertisers should be worried.”

Captain Ron  Nov 22, 2023 • 11:31:12am

Multiple law enforcement sources said that shortly before noon on Wednesday, a car coming from the Canadian side of the border with the US exploded after it was heading toward a secondary search area.

The car was on the Rainbow Bridge that connects Canada to New York and went through an initial checkpoint where identification documents are examined before the explosion occurred.

Authorities do not know what caused the explosion. The FBI, New York State Police and US Customs and Border Protection are on the scene investigating.

Federal authorities are trying to retrieve video from a number of different angles because the statements from witnesses vary, the sources said.

Sources said there were no serious injuries except to those who were in the car, reportedly two men.

Florida judge finds Tesla, Elon Musk knew of defective Autopilot systemk

There is “reasonable evidence” to conclude that Tesla and its officers, including CEO Elon Musk, knew its vehicles had defective Autopilot systems but still allowed the cars to be driven in areas “not safe for that technology,” a Florida judge found.

The ruling last week from Judge Reid Scott, in the Circuit Court for Palm Beach County, means the family of a man who died in a collision while his Tesla’s Autopilot was engaged can go to trial and seek punitive damages from Tesla for intentional misconduct and gross negligence. Reuters first reported the news.

No, I would say it looks like a post crash fireball. The very directional pressure wave is seen to move very slowly across the surface moisture along a typical vehicle traveling direction, but other off axis surface moisture shows no reaction.
The effects do not seem typical to even low grade slower order of explosives like ANFO (fertilizer & fuel))

The Rainbow Bridge has been closed to all traffic amid reports of a vehicle explosion just outside the border inspections plaza on the American side.

Traveling down Niagara Street, the car sped onto the bridge plaza, went through a fence separating the inbound lanes from the outbound lanes, and toward the inspection lanes where it exploded, according to law enforcement sources at the scene.

Two occupants of the car were killed in the explosion.

A border protection agent was injured but not seriously. He’s being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, sources said.

Eighty miles per hour, loses control and hits a big, round bridge support, which cuts the vehicle in half and ruptures the gas tank, which goes BOOM!

No explosives per se, just 20 gallons of gas that can move a 3,000 lb vehicle 600 miles at 30 miles per gallon.

Gasoline has plenty of latent power. Enough that it can look like a bomb to the idiots at Faux News.

Well, since there’s so much speculating going on in the media world, my guess is a mechanical failure: a stuck throttle, or what happened to me once on the interstate near Benton Harbor, MI: cruise control went psycho, van kept speeding up, brakes didn’t override the cruise control, I had to put the van in neutral to be able to brake and slow down before I could pull over to the shoulder and turn it off.

MrBWS’s speculation (because why not?): a medical emergency that turned into a dead stick, literally.

so many simpler explanations before going with terrorist explosions

The mysterious respiratory illness that may have sickened scores of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection that may be very good at evading the canine immune system, researchers say. Some dogs have died from the illness, which starts with causes a cough that can last for weeks, runny eyes and sneezing.

In a development that might help shed light on the illness, which has affected a variety of dog breeds, researchers at the University of New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory and the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies told NBC News they have identified a pathogen that might be what’s making pets sick.

Through a genetic sequencing of samples from an initial group of 30 dogs from New Hampshire who were infected last year and then an additional 40 from Rhode Island and Massachusetts who got sick this year, the researchers say they have discovered a previously unknown germ.

The pathogen is “a funky bacterium,” said Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. “It’s smaller than a normal bacterium in its size and in the size of its genome. Long story short, it’s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.”

Reminiscent of parvovirus. My collie was one of the first fatalities in Illinois when parvo was still the “mysterious disease”.

Anyone reporting on this that’s adding interpretation is doing so because they’re trying to shape impressions.

This is both a function of the attention economy—the bigger, more showy option is always the better one if you’re trying to get people to see ads—and of the way that rapid diffusion of unverified information rapidly leans toward spectacle because even good faith participants are going to attend to the scariest possible version.

It doesn’t help that speculating about terrorism is also politically-motivated, because with each round the implicit therefores set by the War on Terror are reinforced. It doesn’t have to be true to be useful.

Ok we need a recipe.

Memories of Mama Bowan’s Cream Cheese Cookies…

Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
powdered sugar, for garnish

Step 1 -
Whisk together the flour, the salt, and the baking powder in a medium bowl.
Step 2 -
Using a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or an electric hand mixer, cream the butter and the cream cheese together.
Step 3 -
Add the sugar to the creamed butter mixture and beat until light and fluffy.
Step 4 -
Add the egg and the vanilla to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
Step 5 -
Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix one more time.
Step 6 -
Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix on low speed until just combined.
Step 7 -
Using a spatula, give the mixture one last mix.
Step 8 -
Cover and chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
Step 9 -
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 10 -
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 11 -
Dampen your hands slightly, as the dough will be sticky.
Step 12 -
Portion the dough into 2-tablespoon-sized balls.
Step 13 -
Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
Step 14 -
Bake until the edges are set and just turn golden, about 10 minutes.
Step 15 -
Serve garnished with the powdered sugar.

TILBURG, Netherland (WKRC) - An “extremely venomous” two-meter-long green mamba snake has escaped from its owner and is on the loose in the Netherlands.

Due to how dangerous the snake is, Dutch police warned all residents to stay indoors and to under no circumstances try to ensnare the snake.

Police in the city of Tilburg were called by the mamba’s owner on Monday to report that the snake had escaped.

To help people be aware about the snake, local officials posted a mugshot of a green mamba.

The Red State Brain Drain Isn’t Coming. It’s Happening Right Now.

As conservative states wage total culture war, college-educated workers—physicians, teachers, professors, and more—are packing their bags.

newrepublic.com

On Memorial Day weekend in 2022, Kate Arnold and her wife, Caroline Flint, flew from Oklahoma City to Cabo San Lucas for a little R&R. They had five kids, the youngest of them five-year-old twin girls, and demanding jobs as obstetrician-gynecologists. The stresses of all this were mounting. That they were a gay married couple living in a red, socially conservative state was the least of it. Caroline was born in Tulsa, spent much of her childhood in Oklahoma, and was educated at the University of Oklahoma. She cast her first presidential vote for George W. Bush. Kate, the more political of the two, was from Northern California and a lifelong Democrat. But her mother was born in Oklahoma City, and she felt at home there; she’d even given some thought to running for the state legislature.

Kate and Caroline flew down with the twins and their 16-year-old daughter. It says a lot about Kate Arnold that she adopted the three older children while she was attending medical school; the birth mother, whom Kate befriended while volunteering at a home for teenage mothers, was an addict who lost custody.

Arriving in Cabo, Kate and Caroline realized that it had been a very long time—too long— since their last date night. So one evening they ordered the kids room service and went off by themselves to a Taco Night theme dinner. “We sat outside with the little colored flags,” Kate recalled, “and they gave us blankets because it was cold and windy. We hadn’t been sitting for very long when I started saying I wasn’t happy.”

A little more than one week earlier, a disturbed high school student named Salvador Ramos had entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, with an AR-15 rifle and killed 19 children and two adults, injuring 17 more. It was the deadliest school shooting since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, and it happened just one state over as Kate and Caroline’s two youngest were about to start school. Two more mass shootings occurred in Oklahoma while they were in Cabo. A man named Michael Louis gunned down, with an AR-15, two doctors, a receptionist, and a patient at the Tulsa offices of his orthopedic surgeon because he was angry that his recent back surgery left him in pain. Then a man named Skyler Buckner killed one person and injured seven others at a Memorial Day festival in Taft, Oklahoma. States with permissive gun laws have a higher rate of mass shootings, and Oklahoma, with some of the most permissive gun laws in the country, has 45 percent more gun deaths per capita than the national average—higher even than in Texas.

Another reason was that the state legislature was trying to limit access to contraceptives. In March, the state Senate had voted to require parental consent before a minor could take contraceptives. Kate was chair of the Oklahoma chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and she’d lobbied against this change. (The bill later died in the state House of Representatives.)

“You’re just gonna get my nine-year-old birth control without my knowledge?” one state legislator said to her.

“How does your nine-year-old need birth control?” Kate answered. “And yes, if she needs birth control … what’s worse than her coming home pregnant?”

Kate was director of women’s health at a large, federally funded nonprofit health center serving low-income patients. It was, she told me, “A job that I loved.” But five months before their Cabo dinner, Kate published an op-ed at a nonprofit Oklahoma news site criticizing state felony prosecutions of women who miscarried after taking drugs during pregnancy. “Anytime you criminalize drug use in pregnancy,” Kate explained to me, the addicts stop going to the hospital, “and you have worse and worse outcomes.”

After the op-ed appeared, somebody phoned Kate’s health center to complain. After that, Kate’s superiors effectively barred her from making public statements about anything. That irked Kate until her boss explained why: The FBI had contacted the health center to alert them to threats of violence “just for providing birth control.” Did I mention that Oklahoma allows anybody over the age of 21 to carry a loaded firearm in public, open or concealed, without a license?

So they left Oklahoma for good…

re: #157 HRH Stanley Sea

Quick rough estimate from the video:

I got about 1.2 s to travel from the launch spot to the peak of the flight, which is a horizontal distance of about 7 car lengths. More or less 5 m per car length. That’s a horizontal speed of distance/time = 35 m/1.2 s ≈ 29.2 m/s.

Vertically, a max height of about 1 car length, so (with g ≈ 10 m/s^2) initial vertical speed = sqrt (2*g*(5 m)) ≈10 m/s.

That’s a launch speed of sqrt (29.2^2 + 10^2) ≈ 31 m/s = 68 mph. Launch angle = arctan (10/29) ≈ 19°.

So, the car went into the air at nearly 70 mph at a launch angle of about 20°. It would have lost a quite a few mph in the collision that knocked it off the ground, so I’m gonna guestimate that it entered the scene going somewhere around 90 to 100 mph.

Now, why it was going that fast is a question beyond the physics.

Cool sciency stuff:

A surgical implant developed by Washington State University (WSU) researchers with the help of three-dimensional (3D) printing killed 87% of the bacteria that cause staph infections in laboratory tests, while retaining strength and compatibility with surrounding tissue. Bacterial colonization of implants is one of the leading causes of their failure post-surgery. Using 3D printing, researchers added 10% tantalum, a corrosion-resistant metal, and 3% copper to the titanium alloy typically used in implants. When bacteria come into contact with the copper, their cell walls rupture, while the tantalum encourages healthy cell growth with surrounding bone and tissue.

The test marks the farthest distance covered by the laser beams, as NASA seeks to fine tune its communication skills ahead of upcoming missions. The DSOC transceiver launched on board the Psyche spacecraft on October 13 as the first demonstration of laser, or optical, communications from as far away as Mars. After achieving initial success, the team will now work on refining the systems that control the pointing of the downlink laser aboard the transceiver.

“The Star Beast” is based on a comic strip by legendary comics writer Pat Mills and Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons originally published in Doctor Who Weekly more than 30 years ago. The story introduced the alien character of the Meep, voiced in the new episode by Miriam Margolyes.

“It’s from 1979, an absolute classic,” Davies says of the original strip. “Pat Mills and David Gibbons, they were kids back then, but they created this marvelous thing. It’s always been one of my favorite Doctor Who stories, and coming back I thought it would be such enormous fun to celebrate the 60th, and also to grab hold of a great idea, to adapt it, And for those who might know the comic strip of old, don’t worry, there’s a lot of new stuff woven into it.”

Tennant, a lifelong Whovian, admits to being confused when he was initially sent the script for the episode. The actor recalls that “it arrived, and says on the cover page that it’s an adaptation of ‘The Star Beast’ by Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons, which I remember reading as a child. I was thinking, that can’t be what I’m thinking of. But, of course, Russell is a longterm Doctor Who fan, too, so of course it is. Actually that makes perfect sense, because that kind of storytelling energy that is in that comic strip is very reminiscent of Russell’s storytelling energy. It sort of is a perfect fit.”

I’m starting to come around to an idea that our free speech protections need a bit of revisiting in the Internet age. It’s all well and good to say that a speech given to a limited audience isn’t incitement to violence, because the likelihood of anyone in that audience being a psychotic wannabe killer are low. But when you can broadcast your hateful words on the Internet, where any crazy person can see them and take them in the way you certainly meant, though in a plausibly deniable fashion, that seems like an entirely different situation.

This. Used to be that unhinged diatribes like the shit Judge Engoron has been receiving would be scrawled in longhand on legal pads, and come in grubby hand-lettered envelopes through “snail mail”. Nowadays, though, any asshole can post these obscene rants online (with varying degrees of anonymity) and get publicized to the whole world.
Progress….
