This new embedding system I’m putting together should work a lot better than the one I had for Twitter, because I’m not trying to insert the JSON code as HTML element attributes now. That led to all kinds of issues with Unicode and escaped special characters.

Now I’m going to try including the data for a post inside a script tag, with the type “application/json”. This will be invisible in the page, but the data will be straight-up JSON without any weird escaping issues. I’ve been testing it with the last few Mastodon posts here. If you embed a Mastodon post in a comment and then click the pencil icon to edit, you can actually see what this script tag looks like.

In the final version this will actually be gone, replaced by the rendered post.

I know that what Hodgson and his crew did was not wholly original, people have been making fun of bad movies for a long time, but the way that they did so struck a chord with so many of us across multiple generations,,,, sometimes they hit them out of the park, sometimes it was only a single, they ran the gamut from regional stuff to generational tropes and even strayed into academic niftyness when warranted.

It was/is of its time and timeless at the same time. I love those guys because they took something that was bad and adored it and made us all enjoy it and made it cool to be snarky.

I wish we could have made season 14 happen, but alas it was not to be….

still, these folks made me laugh and made me smarter and in this world, that combination is hard to come by.

Ukraine Orthodox Church:

Ukraine’s Orthodox Church, a newly created independent church that held its first service in 2019, has also changed its Christmas date to 25 December.

It formally broke away from the Russian Orthodox church over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

re: #11 Charles Johnson

From the link:

“People don’t want to talk about this stuff at parties.”

For sure.

Kalmus is an example of someone who has internalized some of the obvious issues with our world and economy.

I doubt, though, that he can be offering up solutions that most people can execute.

I get the feeling that he is a bit of a survivalist at heart, and that is something which I think is not really workable.

All survivalists premise that it is they who survive and the masses in big cities (for example) die.

That search brought him to an unusual community called the Possibility Alliance, a homestead where a small group of people is trying to figure out how to live in a world headed for a breakdown (as they see it).

Its leaders eschew capitalism, grow much of their own food, and live without electricity. They’ve dedicated their lives to protest, living off the land as simply as possible, and are preparing their community for ecological disaster and to host climate refugees.

It’s 1960’s hippies redux.

And the hard reality is that their lives really still depend upon the big, capitalist, carbon-spewing society from which they are trying to cloister.

For example, take this image of him riding his bicycle:

Kalmus on a bicycle

His little enclave could not make that bike. Or his bright yellow vest. Or his helmet. Or his eyeglasses upon which he depends to live.

We cannot escape our codependency.

And that is why group action in politics is so important. We have to as a group make some very large changes.

And we have to do it as a global society.

And that latter bit really, really scares the hard-core nationalists.

I have no “climate grief”.

I am too old.

I know I will die before the US burns under its own disasters (I expect in the second half of this century.)

However, I still believe two things:

1) Reality is not to be avoided, and modern science is the best tool by which to measure reality, and …
2) we know by said tool that we are changing this planet, and such changes will lead to extinctions for many species, and grave issues for many humans.

Mostly I see our inability to let go of old beliefs, and change as needed, as our collectively greatest failing.

That makes me a bit sad.

But I have long accepted that I can’t change the world.

I do hope, though, that I can nudge a few people’s opinions, and by doing that contribute to our society accepting what has to be done.

In this case, it’s not so much old beliefs but greed and placing personal wealth above all that is leading to catastrophe. Most people are following what others tell them — and as long as a few corporations are benefiting financially from the fossil fuel industry, they will continue spreading their lies and deceit to enrich themselves further no matter the long term cost of their selfishness.
