The people who like to hear themselves talk are talking again:

Climate and Nature: A Systemic Response Needed | Davos 2024 | World Economic Forum

..

So far I am only a few minutes in and can only roll my eyes.

The problem of climate change does not exist because not enough people are talking about it.

The Davos crowd needs to put their money where their mouths are.

I’ll be convinced the leaders of the world are serious about stopping climate change when a global tariff on carbon is instituted.

They don’t know why you concern yourself with water quality when you can just buy bottled water.
When you can hop on a chopper to your jet and bask at a private resort, why worry?

Rambling on….

The thing about Trump is not that he is uniquely bad for America, and the world. He’s not unique.

It’s that he’s so incompetent at anything but convincing low-information people to buy what he is selling.

Conversely, the people at Davos are highly competent at convincing the average person, the highly educated person, that they are good for the world.

But the Davos crowd are no more effective at helping humanity than Trump.

It’s just that the Davos crowd are really, really good at the talking game.

Here is Ajay Banga, the current (14th) President of the World Bank, in that video:

Banga at WEF Davos, March 2024

At the start of his verbiage was this:

“a journey fueled by hope is realized by deeds “

Ok, so dropping in some flowery words that sound like wisdom.

But the World Bank has been around longer than most international organizations, and in the help they have given (though some will argue that its more about dominion than help) the bottom line is increasing per capita energy use to make struggling economies around the world stronger.

The very nature of the World Bank’s goals is to increase carbon emissions.

Now that the World Bank acknowledges that climate change needs to be prioritized, are they going to tell the struggling masses that those people must cut their emissions???

For those not aware, Trudeau’s government is under attack for their carbon tax.

The opposition is flinging poo intensely at Trudeau, hoping to end the carbon tax.

They have allies:

OPINION: Trudeau government should acknowledge impact of carbon tax hike

[…]

Still, according to the Trudeau government, most Canadians will be better off because much of the proceeds of the carbon tax are refunded to eligible households. However, a recent report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) found most households will experience a net loss of income from the federal carbon tax, even after rebates.

[…]

Eventually, I expect, the entire mitigation efforts are going to have come simply from people desiring more of their own solar, and buying electricity from providers that use renewable resources.

I also expect the top 40 or so economies to be in a rush for new nuclear by the year 2050.

Maybe they could throw their weight behind increasing production of renewable electricity sources. But they won’t be able to do much unless the world actually decides to do it.

So, I haven’t watched his video, but in general, he’s right. When you barely have a single light bulb at night, improving your living conditions will necessarily involve more electricity, for the devices everyone now has (India has 650 million smart phone users now). A vacuum cleaner takes more electricity than sweeping and dusting. A washing machine takes more electricity than handwashing everything, etc, etc.

But more non-wasted energy is not inconsistent with lower emissions. We just need to build renewable and nuclear energy.

And be smarter about what’s really needed.
For refrigerators, there are some very interesting non-electricity using designs, as long as you can get ice or even just water from somewhere else. Which may be good ideas to get the global poor the benefits of refrigeration without the extra costs. Some of these are _very_ old techniques that have been forgotten by most in the developed world.
Don’t go for dryers if you live in places dry enough. No one I knew had a dryer when I lived in the middle east as a kid.

Also, _CHARGE_ people for electricity. In plenty of places, governments turn a blind eye to people tapping from the power grid. If governments want to have a pricing model that gives poorer households a certain amount of electricity free or cheap, go for it, but it’s more expensive for the utilities if people take their electricity for free.

I just did a Moms Demand Action zoom meeting. I still hate them (the zoom meetings, not the moms), but a lot less since I kept my video off.

Nothing will increase your patience with people whose brains work differently like having your brain work differently, without the fun drugs. I will learn what they wanted to teach me when I read it at their (provided as an afterthought) links.

I don’t think a smart phone will make my brain work better, it’ll just look like it does.

Clean water needs energy, hospitals and medicine needs energy, transport and agriculture and fertiliser manufacture and entertainment and everything called civilisation needs energy. Rich countries use lots of energy and tell poor countries they can’t do the same because of CO2 emissions while it’s the rich countries who exert the most climate change per capita because they use lots of energy per capita.

Despite a lot of PowerPoint greenwashing most energy production is fossil-carbon based and will be for at least a generation, probably more, because it’s cheap and available and easy to get at.

I felt a little bad, I mean, parents losing children is one of the worst things humans can go through. Just a little bad, though. Fucker helped lie our way into the Iraq War nightmare that killed hundreds of thousands.

They do tend to show up is some of the worst places during a video. That said, I’m not as troubled with ads as others. Most of my viewing is on my TV with the cable box providing apps to the various streaming services, including youtube. Nearly every video begins with one or two ads, usually 5 to 10 seconds long. The last in the string of ads is skipable after 5 seconds. Once started, ad breaks usually appear every 5 or 10 minutes, are 30 seconds or shorter, and usually skipable. I just keep my finger on the remote and skip the remainder of an ad when allowed. Only on rare cases does an ad break extend to more than 30 seconds.

Do I hate this? Sure, who likes ads, but for now, I live with it because, frankly, the rest of the available channels and streaming services are shit.

IMPORTANT DISCLAMER: NONE OF THIS SHIT IS LEGAL ADVICE
I MEAN THINK ABOUT IT, I’M A GODDAMNED RANDO ON THE INTERNET

Since it’s something I learned in the last week, did you know that the beneficiary forms on file with your bank, insurance companies and investment brokerages override any and all instructions that you may have left in your last will and testament?

Well it’s true, do yourselves a favor, go to each & every institution and update your forms motherfuckers.

Also, you generally DO NOT want to have the beneficiary form on your IRA point to a living trust (unless that trust qualifies as irrevocable, which most don’t.) This is because under the SECURE ACT 1.0 when a trust becomes the named beneficiary of an IRA the timeline that the trust has to draw down the entire account goes from 10 years to 5 years. So your heirs will lose 5 years worth of tax bracket arbitrage and investment growth if you decide to make your living trust the beneficiary of your IRA.

When I retire I’m seriously thinking of upgrading from my M1 MacMini to an M3 Mac Studio when they’re upgraded.

Wouldn’t the Mini be a whole lot less expensive?

The Studio prices start at $1999. For me as a retiree I wonder how I would use a Studio for that price. I don’t think I need the high end Apple chips as even the programming I do is just for fun.

A Mini for $499 (sale price) is a good deal. I know that it costs more to order with more RAM or SSD.

The deal with the iMac is that it comes with that beautiful screen.

Most 3rd party monitors are meh when it comes to the image. Apple does not use a plastic diffuser and one can really tell the difference when comparing side by side with a third party monitor.

And Apple’s monitors are not inexpensive.

I know there are folk out there who like to play with super-cheap Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi or whatever, but I think my days of fiddling with computer parts is over. I just want to plug and play.

The polarized light image gives us a “new view of the monster lurking at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy,” according to the European Southern Observatory.

The black hole at the center of our galaxy has been compared to a doughnut — and as it turns out, this doughnut has swirls. Scientists shared a mesmerizing new image on Wednesday, showing Sagittarius A* in unprecedented detail. The polarized light image shows the black hole’s magnetic field structure as a striking spiral.

Nope. Only thing that’s happening is I’m Jonesing for a slice of real cheesecake…

re: #46 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I got a Studio about 15 months ago just because I need to be able to work with 4x5” and 6x17cm film scan files that often end up over 2Gb.

And it’s 100% overkill for that.

Anymore I’m just playing Chess, Bridge or Go on my Macs and I really want a challenge that shakes the rust off my RAM plates.

The basic M3 chip seems to be so capable that I doubt I will need any of the more expensive options.

I think the expensive Macs are really geared towards video professionals.

You can probably get one of these Orange Pi packages and run Linux and get all sorts of games to challenge you.

IMPORTANT DISCLAMER: NONE OF THIS SHIT IS LEGAL ADVICE
I’M MEAN THINK ABOUT IT, I’M A GODDAMNED RANDO ON THE INTERNET

I got the Mephisto Phoenix powered by Raspberry Pi chips. It comes with 4 modern programs (Komodo, Shredder. HIARCS and Stockfish), and 20 classic chess computer simulations.

It has book options that make it play like Fischer, Kasparov or Carlsen. I’ve been getting to the point I usually draw with the current programs. So I’m looking be challenged at a tougher level…

Another trash comment about trash:

Up here trash is a major problem. Everything is shipped in so there’s a lot of shipping debris. On top of that there’s almost no space for a landfill. We have one landfill now known as Mt. Trash. It’s getting taller every day. Several years go the Borough sold the landfill and the right to pick-up garbage to (the Infamous) Waste Management.

Currently we pay $50/month for weekly garbage pick-up along with biweekly recycle pick-up.

The real kicker is that last year Waste Management raised the fee for the public to haul their private trash to the landfill to $150 plus tax ($7.50) per pick-up truck load. And the public can only dump on Saturdays from 8 to Noon.

Needless to say, trash is being dumped everywhere but the landfill.

I left the Catholic Church long ago, but when I stopped paying attention to their ritual guilt-mongering, they were still nowhere near as extreme as the US Catholic Church is today.

They’re basically indistinguishable from Calvinists now.

re: #29 goddamnedfrank

I second this information. The instructions you leave on those accounts pass outside the estate settlement process. I remember a friend of of mine telling me about how her brother in law called her to find out what happened to his mother’s checking account after her death. Well, it had been payable on death jointly to her and her husband, and the money had moved almost automagically into their joint account upon presentation of a death certificate. The brother in law had been counting on that money (just as he later, unsuccessfully, had been counting on breaking the trust that doled out a chunk of money every year), but it didn’t go to him. He ranted and raved and talked about lawyers but eventually shut down when he found out how expensive it would be.

Oh hey, just y’know, by-the-by, we were in a Wells Fargo today making sure everything was correct there too because WF doesn’t make that info obviously available through the website or app. We learned from the manager that there is a PoD line on the bank statements but to me that’s some fucked up malicious compliance shit. Also, the beneficiary line on his Savings account was blank, because he added it after he created his living trust and checking account and nobody bothered to tell him anything.

re: #70 Charles

I left the Catholic Church long ago, but when I stopped paying attention to their ritual guilt-mongering, they were still nowhere near as extreme as the US Catholic Church is today.

They’re basically indistinguishable from Calvinists now.

Speaking of which, I have seen a rumor today, which I have not been able to trace to a reputable source, so YMMV, but this: Apparently Tim Ballard, disgraced anti-sex trafficker, apparently went to some right wing Catholic function at Mar-A-Lardo sometime earlier this week. The rumor is that he and his family are converting to Catholicism and he was wearing a Miraculous Medal at this shindig. Just a reminder: Ballard was in *tight* with the leadership of the church formerly known as Mormon. But his world collapsed last September when he was sued for various incidents of sexual harassment. Also, nobody has confirmed this, but allegedly Ballard was excommunicated about the same time.

My ex-boyfriend used to be a pretty devout Catholic, but over the years, he’s slowly bagged it. Now he goes to a welcoming LGBTQ Methodist congregation on the occasions when he feels like going to church. Sometimes he says, “this is not the Catholic church I grew up with”—meaning the American Catholic church and hierarchy is just *mean.*

Anti-Biden Witness Tony Bobulinski Sues Fox News’ Jessica Tarlov for Defamation

The lawsuit, which notably does not name Fox News, accuses Jessica Tarlov of defaming Tony Bobulinski and his lawyer over comments she made about a Trump Super PAC.

The complaint, filed in the Southern District of New York, seeks $30 million in damages from the liberal pundit over comments she made on Fox News about Bobulinski and his legal representation. Stefan Passantino, a lawyer for Bobulinski, is also a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

Following Bobulinski’s public testimony in an impeachment hearing last week, Tarlov said during the March 20 broadcast of The Five that a Donald Trump-associated political action committee had paid Bobulinski’s legal fees. Tarlov, however, issued a clarification the following day after Bobulinski’s attorney Jesse Binnall demanded a retraction and apology.

I haven’t been in a branch in *years* and I haven’t worked a front line job since 2001, so I have almost no idea how it works. What I do know is that armed with my Social Security number, my ex-bf was able to go into his local branch recently and the banker made me the POD on his accounts. The banker also commented to him that I work for the bank. I was a bit creeped out by this. I mean, I know it’s there on my account, but announcing that…hmmm. Not that the ex doesn’t already know this, but still creepy.

Such moments should be encouraged.

Yeah once we were there in person it was fine. It’s just that BoA and Vanguard let you change assignations and percent distributions on their sites and WF makes it a chore. Which is ableist and ultimately serves WF’s financial interests instead of the customer’s by keeping more funds locked up in the probate process.

Also kind of pissed he was allowed to add the savings account with a blank assignation, which makes it feel like strategy, which is what I meant by malicious compliance, with ERISA, at the C-suite level.

I’ve been fighting with WF for fourteen months now trying to get accounts transferred into my name. (Listed on them as JTWROS) They are stonewalling everything. Death cert not legible (Multiple copies sent, incl. by my lawyer) Forms not filled out in a timely manner. They tried to force me to open long-term investment accts. to move the funds into—refused on advice of my lawyer. Outright misleading and lies. Considerable $$.
