An Exceptional Tiny Desk Jazz Session: Kiefer

Music • Views: 14,402

For Tiny Desk concerts without a lead vocalist, I usually try to detect musicians’ nonverbal conversations with each other as they perform. For Kiefer’s set, there’s a bonus show within the show. He plays with a sense of joy that I haven’t seen in a while and when his eyes connect with a fellow player, it’s as if he’s thanking them each time. With decades clocked behind the piano and a strong catalog, Kiefer Shackelford is primed for the moment.

The Los Angeles pianist and producer’s early instrumental projects were heavily hip-hop-based, playing the keys over drum loops and samples. His 2021 project, When There’s Love Around, leaped into full-on jazz, but his latest, It’s Ok, B U, finds that sweet middle ground. Between albums, he’s made a name for himself in the independent scene and among the majors, booking work with Drake, Anderson .Paak and SiR. For his Tiny Desk, Kiefer brought two ensembles to highlight the best of his work. The Kiefer Trio, comprised of drummer Luke Titus and bassist Pera Krstajic, played a medley of “Why Not?” and “Cute.” For “Superhero” and “Socially Awkward,” Kiefer then invited Nate Smith, Carrtoons, Theo Croker and guitarist Charlie Hunter who, shockingly, is the only musician in this combo who hasn’t played at the Desk.

I’ve been thinking about this. Soon it will be the 20th Anniversary of LGF (that is, the anniversary of the first day that registration opened). What should we plan for a virtual event? I’ll set up the dessert table.

Once again — annoyed with myself for today’s Bee.

Wasted time today searching for a word of the wrong length.. Do that all the time — when I finally go to Hints, I will eventually write down how many words remain and their characteristics — and then later discover I’m wasting time looking for a 7 letter word when the actual word is 4 letters! Or looking for a 5 letter word, when it’s actually 6 letters!

Three Uncomfortable Truths About Joe Biden and Gaza

TL:DW: If you don’t vote to retain Biden as POTUS November 5th because of the Biden administration’s actions IRT Israel’s actions in Gaza the past several months, you still will be making a choice… and you’re not gonna like it if Mango Mussolini manages to squeeze back in the the White House.

Cohen recalls asking Trump how Melania Trump might take everything that was happening. He describes Trump’s reply as follows: “He goes, ‘How long do you think I’ll be on the market for? Not long.’ He wasn’t thinking about Melania. This was all about the campaign.”

Hell, I can remember winning that Edward R. Murrow DVD, but I just checked and the movie came out in 2005. What was happening that led to that contest where we wrote I think the Murrow coda for a sample broadcast, ending with good night and good luck?

Thinking of our late Uncle Ralph today, he passed a year ago this week. He was a skilled pediatric plastic surgeon who used his skills to make life better for tens of thousands of children over his nearly 50 year career. After his last case of the day, he lost conscious and was rushed to the ER. His passing left a hole in the lives of many. Our family will always treasure the thousands of memories we created together from the time we spent outdoors with him.

I sent this comment to electoral-vote.com this am

I don’t care about people’s politics or political affiliations. I don’t care *who* they vote for.
I care *how they decide* who to vote for.
How they develop that position, how they make their evaluations and decisions.
The process – the critical thinking - in gathering info, acceptance of what they hear and see, is more of a window into who they are (and aren’t) than anything else.

If they come to it rationally, with something they can support, then fine.
If it’s just vague ‘feelings’ then I have no time for it.
Nor for single issue voters.

You abdicate your decision making responsibility if you use the situation in the Middle East (or any one specific issue) as your determinative factor when deciding who to vote for in November.

This election is about who will be President of the United States. Who will run the country and how.

The election is between Biden and Trump. No one else. One of those two *will* be president.
Any vote that is not an actual vote *for* a candidate is unarguably a vote for the other one.

We all know who each of them is. No single event or issue, by itself, is enough to change the circumstances.
- Biden is essentially a hard working, more or less honest, steward politician, who clearly is in service to the country as a whole.
- Trump is essentially a criminal whose presidential motives are about (likely illegal) personal enrichment, avoiding jail and legal consequences for past acts, and dismantling much of what, until recently even his acolytes would have fought to preserve as the essence of what this country is.

Whatever our power and influence is or isn’t in the Middle East, it doesn’t change the fundamentals of this choice at all.

US Army Major tasked to the DIA publicly resigns over Israel / Gaza policy:

In his note, Major Mann said he had continued to carry out his duties at the Defense Intelligence Agency without voicing his concerns, hoping that the war would soon be over.

“I told myself my individual contribution was minimal, and that if I didn’t do my job, someone else would, so why cause a stir for nothing?” he wrote.

“My work here — however administrative or marginal it appeared — has unquestionably contributed to that support,” his post said. “The past months have presented us with the most horrific and heartbreaking images imaginable — sometimes playing on the news in our own spaces — and I have been unable to ignore the connection between those images and my duties here. This caused me incredible shame and guilt.”

“At some point — whatever the justification — you’re either advancing a policy that enables the mass starvation of children, or you’re not,” he added.

“I know that I did, in my small way, wittingly advance that policy,” the major wrote. “And I want to clarify that as the descendant of European Jews, I was raised in a particularly unforgiving moral environment when it came to the topic of bearing responsibility for ethnic cleansing.”

Two Bob Fergusons drop out of race for Washington state governor

The original headline was “there are three bob fergusons running for washington state governor”. Bob Ferguson, the state AG and running as a Democrat, is the favorite in the jungle primary vote. Earlier, two others registered to run as Bob Ferguson, Democrat, meaning there would be 3 with the same name and party allegiance. Typical rat fuckery.

SO the AG hit them with a S&D, threatening them with felonies. And Dave Reichert, the GOP leader, called them out also.

By the end of the day they had withdrawn their names. Good. But expect this tactic elsewhere with jungle primaries.

Looonng thread:

Seth Abramson
@SethAbramson

(THREAD) This is a live thread of the testimony of Michael Cohen in Donald Trump’s criminal trial. Its author is a NYT-bestselling Trump biographer and former criminal defense attorney. I’ll not only be covering the testimony live but adding essential background.

Seth Abramson @ @SethAb…•11h
1/ First, some information on my own brief association with Michael Cohen, in the interest of full disclosure. l’ve been interviewed by Michael Cohen on his podcast, and thereafter was invited back many times; I did not accept those invitations. I have spoken to Michael by phone.

2/ In speaking with Michael by phone, he floated (at a minimum) the idea of me ghostwriting or co-writing his second book, the follow-up to his
#1 New York Times bestseller DISLOYAL—a book I candidly thought was surprisingly excellent.
I had no interest whatsoever in doing this.

3/ I do not take the view of Michael Cohen that MSNBC has taken, that after his plea to several federal felonies, a federal prison sentence, and a period of home detention, he is a changed man. I have represented thousands of criminal defendants, and I do not believe this at all.

4/ 1 believe that Michael Cohen is the same man today that he was five years ago, ten years, and fifteen years ago.
I do not think he was chastened by his conviction, I think he was angered by it-albeit not without good reason. Our justice system usually goes after the big fish.

12/ And Trump was involved in the 2018 Cohen case far more than anyone realizes (and certainly far more than the pathological liar Trump, whose spectacular lie is that he had nothing to do with it at all, will admit). Why? Because Cohen was also charged with lying to Congress…

15/ But the *other* effect of the Trump FBI and Trump DOJ letting unindicted co-conspirator Trump off the hook in 2018 to punish Trump’s friend, attorney, fixer, and employee—the little fish—instead was that the *state* had to elevate Trump’s charges to felonies to prosecute him.
….
19/ The State of New York could’ve and would’ve brought misdemeanors against Trump in 2018 using Michael Cohen’s testimony—with almost no chance of jail—but had to wait for the DOJ and FBI to finish their work.

But the DOJ and FBI only aimed to run out the clock on Trump’s case.

23/ So New York found a legal theory—one I personally believe is both sound and warranted, if novel—to elevate to felonies the misdemeanors the Trump FBI and Trump DOJ had blocked it from.

*That’s* why Trump is facing 34 felonies now: because of his own administration’s actions.

25/ So yes—Michael Cohen has a right to be angry. He watched Trump pardon *every other criminal co-conspirator* or *arguable* co-conspirator—Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, Paul Manafort—while Trump had *such confidence* that Cohen was his dog that he wouldn’t save him.

32/ Cohen telling the *truth* in 2024 benefits him in too many ways to count.

Telling the truth *does* get him on MSNBC in a sort of rehabilitation tour—as the truth is *very* bad for Trump *and* what MSNBC viewers want to hear.

And the truth is *very* bad for Trump in NYC now.

33/ Michael Cohen also knows better than almost anyone alive—because unlike almost anyone, he’s actually gone to federal prison for lying—that lying to protect Trump in 2024 would not only not benefit him at all but could lead to him going to jail again on a state Perjury charge.

59/ Every time this century Donald Trump flirted with running for President of the United States before he actually did—most notably in 2008 and 2012—Michael Cohen was his de facto shadow campaign manager, the point man for determining the viability of a Trump political career.

60/ When Trump wanted to sell American foreign policy during the 2016 general election campaign, he turned to Michael Cohen to negotiate a clandestine Trump Tower Moscow deal throughout the entirety of that campaign—direct negotiation with the Kremlin!—and literally no one else.

68/ …Cohen has done for Trump in the past; it’s rather stunning to attack the credibility of a witness largely for the unethical, possibly illegal things *you* wanted them to do—and watched them do—on *your* behalf).

Third, the media in the room right now, *with exceptions*…

81/ What Cohen is doing now is repeating the same story he told the FBI, DOJ, federal judges, anyone who listens to his podcast, Congress, anyone who watches his interviews on MSNBC, anyone who reads his books or articles *and* what *Trump himself said* in the Daniels civil suit.

84/ During *exactly this period of time* Cohen was *also* running point for Trump on what would be the most lucrative business deal of his life: Trump Tower Moscow. That involved working with Kremlin agents and even, in 2016, the Kremlin itself to secretly make Trump even richer.

91/ So what we’re getting in court now is an account from the man who was Trump’s *leading* fixer in 2015-16, trusted so much he was trusted to lie to Congress and oversee a course of foreign collusion which—*if* Russia’s 2016 cyberwar had been seen as war—could’ve been Treason.
