Islamic Battered Woman Syndrome

Amina Lawal, the Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery and recently acquitted after an international outcry, now says she was never afraid and that her experience did not affect her belief in Islam—because she knew that shari’a is fair.

Cradling her nearly 2-year-old daughter, Lawal yesterday drew a red veil repeatedly across her face as she spoke.

“The trial did not affect my faith in Islam, because I know that sharia makes room for fair trial,” said Lawal, her head and body also draped in bright print cloth, in the style of northern Nigeria’s Muslim women.

“It is a fair procedure, and so I was never afraid throughout my trial,” she said.
