Rogue baboon executed after terrorising South African residents
A rogue baboon has been executed in South Africa after officials ruled he was incapable of being reformed when he was caught repeatedly breaking into houses and terrorising residents.
William was given a lethal injection by vets after being rounded up following years spent tormenting locals near Cape Town.
Officials confirmed the 14-year-old animal was destroyed last Friday after an investigation found he had refused to stop engaging in anti-social behaviour on the Cape Peninsula.
Cape Town spokesman Kylie Hatton said: “The City and baboon management teams on the Cape Peninsula decided, after thorough investigation and careful consideration, to euthanise a male baboon that lived in the Scarborough area.
This necessary step was taken in the interest of human health and safety and the improved management and conservation of baboons on the Peninsula.
“The baboon was found to be raiding on a regular basis, entering houses when he knew there were people inside and sometimes actively breaking windows or doors.
“Perhaps most worryingly, such raiding behaviour was often done in the company of juvenile baboons and thus future generations of baboons might have been learning that part of foraging involved breaking, entering and chasing people in their homes.”
So, William was not only a terrorist and looter, he was corrupting youth as well.
