Jesus was a Palestinian and Why it Matters

You can read this yourself, but the author is as ignorant as the individuals on the TV clip. For the record:

• Jesus was a Jew. This is not something the Jewish people is particularly pleased about, but it is a historical fact. He was not a Christian in the modern sense, for obvious reasons, and he was certainly not a Muslim, also for obvious reasons. Anyone can claim him to be the messiah or a prophet or whatever they wish, but he was born and lived as nothing but a Jew. To claim otherwise, or to omit this fact as the author of this essay does, defies logic to say the least.

• Jesus was not a "Palestinian" any meaningful sense. He lived in a place then known as Judea, in Jewish cities called Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem. The land was not referred to as Palestine until many years after he lived. Had you called him a "Palestinian" he would undoubtedly have been puzzled. Calling him a "Palestinian" is historically incorrect and only being done, of course, for political reasons.

• There were non-Jewish people living in what is now Israel then as now, but the majority of the population, at least in Judea itself, was Jewish. And so was Jesus. The avoids mentioning that Jesus was a Jew and implies that he was one of some other religion or ethnicity living in Israel at that time. Again, for political reasons.

I could go on, but I recommend reading this incoherent essay for a sampling of every form of distortion of history one can imagine. I was written last year, but also reproduced in its entirety in Maan News this week.

You are also missing the very important fact that this Jesus person almost certainly did not exist.

I don't know whether he did or didn't exist. If he did, he would have been a Jew and, definitely, not a "Palestinian".

But the whole argument amounts to the same substance as a discussion of whether the Easter bunny is a rabbit or a hare.

I am unclear why an otherwise serious person would worry about it.

For many around the world, the existence of Jesus and the nature of his identity is very nearly a life and death matter. Nonetheless, the point of this discussion is really not so much about Jesus per se, but about denying Jewish identity and attributing a fabricated "Palestinian" identity to historical figures for political purposes. The goals of the television interview and the essay are to minimize or delegitimize the historical connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, and to substitute a false and historically inaccurate "Palestinian" history. The lie that Jesus was not a Jew, but rather, a "Palestinian" is but one example of this approach.

That is why an otherwise serious person would worry about it.

The presence of ethnically Jewish people in the region 2k years ago doesn't do anything to legitimize Israel either.

Modern treaties and international recognition do that job.

Really, there were no English people in Britain around 0 CE, could saying that cause any reasonable person to wonder if the U.K. is legitimate?

It's purely a psychological game. The PA knows that many people feel that there should be a state of Israel, not simply because of UN resolutions. They feel that Israel should exist now because it existed before, and that Jews have just as many rights to be on that land as anyone else.

This kind of statement is a precursor to ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Perhaps, but that is not the point either. Although there has always been a Jewish presence in Israel over the past 2000 years, it has been ruled and inhabited by many different groups as well throughout that time. No one disputes that.

Nonetheless, part of the effort to delegitimize Israel as a Jewish state is to deny any significant Jewish connection and to claim that it was created solely as a compensation for the Holocaust at the expense of the "true" aboriginal inhabitants, the "Palestinians". Hence the admonition by Helen Thomas that Jews should "go home" to "Poland, Germany, America and everywhere else". Israel is the home of the Jewish people, something Helen Thomas (and many others) deny and may never fully accept.

Claiming that Jesus was not a Jew, but instead a "Palestinian", is part of this effort to deny a historical connection of the Jewish people to Israel that has existed for thousands of years and has been continuous. It is an effort to portray Jews as interlopers, "European settlers", etc. and Palestinians as the "genuine" owners of Israel. You can believe that if you like, but basing that claim on obvious fabrications such as the claim that Jesus was a "Palestinian" should not convince anyone.
