This is a scary conclusion, and completely believable. What the researchers realized is that large-scale burning of cities in a nuclear war could release gigantic amounts of CFCs and related chemicals into the high atmosphere, rapidly destroying the ozone layer.

“A real bummer”?? You’ve got to love those understated, non-alarmist scientists.

“Nuclear skirmish” now tops “moderate Republican” in my ranked list of complete oxymorons.

A lot of Christian fundies don’t buy this either. They think only god can destroy the earth, so fire away as many nukes as you want.

No, we’d survive. It just wouldn’t be very pleasant for awhile. The amount of skin cancer would go way up, but we’re not not talking about utter ruin.

You are correct for scene 1 act one. Long term with reduced immune systems, damaged DNA and worldwide starvation … I think we would have a serious problem … unless we could figure out how to live self sufficiently underground quickly.

Great post Charles. The grand experiment of our times is if we are smart enough to discipline ourselves enough to survive into the next century. Right now, it does not look good.
