Microsoft Leak: Early Windows 8 Details Emerge

Early reports indicate that Windows 8 may feature a file browser sporting the ribbon interface. It would allow easy tabbed access to commands which are generally hard to find. For instance, the new menu system includes icons to select files, copy, paste, or delete. Users can even simplify multi-step processes such as sending a file to a friend by email with a section dedicated for sharing. Microsoft is also making it easier to customize the Windows Explorer appearance with quick settings for thumbnail sizes, file grouping/sorting, document preview, navigation pane, and more.

A New Login Screen

With inspiration from Windows Phone 7, the upcoming Windows 8 will feature a more informative login screen. Users will finally have the option to customize the background without having to turn to 3rd party tools.

Does anyone actually like the ribbon?

How is it possible that Microsoft hasn't figured out the Ribbon sucks? Have they ever watched people using it? (Really just watched, not run a flawed usability test that is doomed to give invalid results before they even start it.)

A good rule: First, build something that works better. Then, make it pretty. Doing it the other way around is a recipe for disaster.

According to the odd-even rule, Windows 8 will be a bloated, unstable piece of garbage... Windows 9 might be good. Or maybe the rule is that all odd and even releases will be bloated, unstable pieces of garbage? Or even good releases are odd? Or odd releases are even good?

Wait, using MS's consistent naming scheme, shouldn't the next version be named one of the following?

Windows 8.5
Windows 2013
Windows TNG 3.11
Windows YOU
Windows NT 7.0
Windows Vista 3

In other words, ANYTHING but "Windows 8."

No seriously, going by the fact that the Chinese are obsessed with the number 8, I think there will be massive uptake by them. OK, they might all be pirated copies, but they will jump at the chance to install it.
