I went to camp like that. They did try to scare the shit out of us and sometimes succeeded, not only with stories. But I survived.

Part of the fun of camp was hoping stories would be scary enough to scare me, and how great some of the storytellers were. I still remember one kid in 6th grade camp that was a fantastic story teller.

The shit's not real, and a good scary story is something to enjoy. It's all about exercising creativity and imagination - not the spooks themselves. Doesn't have to mean anything more than that. And that's about as complicated as that parent-kid talk needed to be.

I was a fan of horror and sci-fi since I was old enough to walk. My dad and I would stay up late at night and watch every scary movie on TV, from about the time I was 2 years old. After years of looking for something to scare me as a kid - movies, big roller coasters, scary books - I grew up fairly fearless.

BTW, I did the same thing with Little Heat. He grew up just fine. I will admit, I find his tattoos and death metal a little scary, but it didn't damage his psyche and he wasn't afraid of spooks in the slightest.

If the kid can't survive scary stories, how is he going to survive in the real world as an adult?

Do you know what scared the crap out of me as a kid? Holocaust stories! I went to camp with kids whose parents were survivors.
