now that they can vote

Err... in 2015 the earliest. If at all.

And once again, all depends on the whim of the King.

God the Saudi government is so backward. It's sickening to see that princess grovel over the kindness of a sycophant king.

Good news, thanks for posting.

I had a tiny suspicion, and a large hope, that this would happen in this case, since the good voting news was issued just prior to this news.

Nothing that is happening over there is happening in a vacuum. They know the eyes of the world are on them. They know what the court of public world opinion would do if they carried out this sentence.

The BEST think that can happen for Saudi women is for every sentence like this to get publicized, which will lead to more cynicism from you, but also leading to decisions like the one made today as re: this woman's sentence.

It’s good news, but the bad news should never have preceded it.

Can't have good news without bad news to benchmark it against. ;p

And they also know that the world has a short attention span and will have moved on to the next big thing in a matter of weeks. BP oil from spill is not degrading and still fouling US coast. Fukushima is still contaminating Japan. And it majorly sucks for the people directly affected. But the "court of public world opinion" has moved on.

The BEST think that can happen for Saudi women is for every sentence like this to get publicized, which will lead to more cynicism from you, but also leading to decisions like the one made today as re: this woman's sentence.

No, the best thing that can happen is for the House of Saud to be toppled and a new country arising, leaving those women FREE women instead of Saudi women who depend on "decisions like the one made today", i.e. the King's whim.

If you don't think that this actually can happen, then you are the one who is being a cynic, lady.
