Oh come on, doesn't every thirteen year old girl dream of being raped over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over?

Basically at that age all females are hormone driven sluts who simply can't say no, the Court very properly recognized this in it's ruling. Sorry I can't stay to discuss this longer but there are some "hang-out" spots near the local middle schools that I heard about on facebook that I need to go check out for surveillance cameras.

There's a British-Kurdish freelance writer whose hair is positively on fire over this and she's tweeting about it like mad. She started out hyperventilating, then recovered and began swearing like a sailor, and now appears to be on a mission. Pity the fool who dares to get in her way on this.

Well it is kind of maddening and frustrating even if it did not happen in ones own country isn't it? I'm embarrassed for Turkey and surely anyone who lives or was born there is too.

Indeed. I'd be mortified and furious. I'm sure that's how most Turks are feeling if the news reports about the reaction are any indicator.

This highlights another reason American Muslims must assert influence on Muslims from regions/regimes where politics co-opts religious expression and influence.

Honestly, even Erdogren is liable to provide pushback against the court for this ruling. It's utterly insane, unless you believe than women exist simply to serve men. Sadly, there are many men in this world who believe that.

This is so sickening. I don't want to pretend I know all of the facts, and God knows what backroom political deals were involved, but NOTHING could EVER justify this verdict. If there is a God, I hope He helps undue this, real quick.

It's a shame too that Pamela Geller and her henchman will jump all over this to justify their hate-speech, because according to them the only way to fight hate is with more hate.

This thing is just wrong on so many levels. I understand from the article that whatever legal loopholes existed that allowed this to happen have been or are being closed, but still...what kind of loophole would allow such a thing? And wouldn't a court at this level have some powers of freaking discretion they could exercise?

Court decision makers were paid-off or threatened?

Really, it is the only thing I can think of --

It IS insane, and the men who still think that way need to either evolve their thinking ASAP or be consigned to a Darwinian dustbin and left behind. Erdogan or someone needs to seriously throw their political weight around and right this wrong.

I agree. I can't think of ANY circumstances where a verdict like this could be justified, regardless of what the law says. They need to find a way around this, and I really don't care how at this point—special government session, back room horse trading, strong-arming, whatever. I can't muster any respect for a legal system that's unable to protect its children.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that this will give them another thing to screech about, especially since it will have everything to do with their hate-filled agenda, and nothing to do with actual concern for the welfare of the girl in question. But whatever, they're gonna do what they're gonna do—they're irrelevant here.

Could very well be. The article said that the men "included soldiers, civil servants, shopkeepers and teachers", so maybe one of them had a connection that could pull some strings at a high level. Ugh, teachers. Plural, not singular. That's just effing great. Someone ought to collect the names & photos pf all 26 of them and plaster them on billboards all across the country.

It's my understanding that the rape happened back in 2002, so I find it odd that they're reducing the sentences now. WTF is up with that? Sounds like maybe someone was trying to squeeze them through one of the last remaining loopholes before it was closed forever.

Sweetie, I just want to hug you right now! Yes, I'm horrified, disgusted, want to rescue this precious little girl, etc., but I know I'm not half as upset as I can see you are! I only hope it helps you if someone (even if it's just little me) says, formally, "Yes, of course I know that real Muslims are not like this & that true Islam is not like this."

You're a sweetheart, thank you for that. {{Flavia}}

I really struggle with posting stuff like this because it pains me, but it needs to have light shone on it if things are ever going to change.

This is somewhat of a political ruling. I believe

In a not so subtle way, Erdogan's regime is reinforcing his 'street' Islamist creds.

This never would have happened under previous regimes- no way.

So, what's the Court's stated reason for their decision?

re: #16 000G

I don't know. The articles I read said the court was "withholding comment".
