Textiles Research Laboratory:
The University has been working in partnership with Rapanui Clothing, an award-winning eco fashion brand based on the Isle of Wight, to develop a textile that appears invisible to the naked eye. Synthetic Optic Fibre uses its light-transmitting properties to capture and relay an image at the speed of light from one side of the garment to the other.

The research has been around for a long time but the principle is actually fairly simple. The challenge is to capture light on the front of the garment, and relay it to the back - and visa versa.

Very groovy! But I have questions.

What's the purpose of it? Also it doesn't look so much "invisible" as it is "see-through". Of course, I have no way of knowing what it looks like on because they don't actually show that! Not sure why I want to see someone else's reaction to it when I can analyze my own. I kinda feel jipped!

True. The video is a bit of a teaser. When the shirt is help up in front of the wall, you can see the wall behind it. No idea what you see when it is on a body - does it look like the person isn't there or does it look like the person isn't wearing a shirt?

Bob Levin nailed it.

For one thing, fiber optics is a passive phenomenon that does not require power and cannot be switched "on" and "off", no more than your window glass can be.

It might be possible to create such a shirt, but it would only work from two directions, and would be ridiculously thick with all the fiber optic cabling, which would require even more fiber optics to cover the new larger area, and so on.
