Liquid-Cooled LED Bulbs Ready for Summer

Switch Lighting’s LED bulbs have similar technical specs to its competitors, but the startup is counting on clever design and good looks to stand out in a crowded field.

The company plans to make its first three general-purpose light bulbs available this summer to lighting distributors and today is expected to introduce a three-way bulb and a 240-volt bulb for markets outside the U.S.

Its first bulbs are replacements for 40-watt, 60-watt, and 75-watt incandescent lamps. Costing between $40 and $50, they are primarily aimed at commercial customers. Switch Lighting is also working on a less expensive consumer-oriented line due next year, according to a company executive.

These look very interesting, but I’m not sure how many people are going to be willing to pay $40 or more for a light bulb. These bulbs would have to last a very long time in order to recoup the purchase price.

These look very interesting, from their website:

SWITCH LED light bulbs use a fraction of the energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs — slashing both electric bills and maintenance costs. With a typical payback period of less than six months, re-lamping with our bulbs makes great business sense.

I'm going to assume that the payback calculation is based on "always on" and it probably should be quadrupled or something for consumer effective payback. They dim, they are instant on, and they don't attract bugs... I'm probably going to get a couple for the halls, outside, see how they do over a couple of years.

It's difficult to imagine a $40 light bulb having a payback period of less than 6 months, but I suppose it's possible in a commercial environment. The consumer bulbs would have to be quite a bit cheaper to be cost-effective, I would think. It's going to be hard for them to gain marketshare in the consumer space - compact fluorescents only gained popularity when prices dropped enough to compete with incandescent bulb prices on the store shelf, even though they are more cost-effective over the life of the bulb.

The bulbs really shine (pun intended) in hard-to-reach places. In our living room it is really a pain to change the lights (3.5 m, ~11.5ft), and I would be willing to pay a bit extra just not to worry about the lights for the next 10 years.

In our home we have one of those philips lights that is really good too - neutral light color and a LOT of light.

I have bought a lot of LED lighting and I pay much less than 40 to 50 dollars each. I go on eBay and buy them from the Chinese and Hong Kong manufacturers. Delivery is a lot longer, weeks instead of days, but I haven't had any problems. They go out of their way to keep a high eBay rating and will do almost anything to prevent a bad review from you. You pay with Pay Pal so that you aren't giving anyone your credit card information.

LED lighting lasts for 30 to 50,000 hours. And unlike CLF bulbs the lifetime is not shortened by the number of times it is switched on and off. With this long lifetime it is feasible to literally build the LED lighting into the building, as a permanent part of it.
