From the comments: ...
Amusingly, one thing these financial crises teach is our common humanity. All the phenomena described in the article, with variations, have occurred over and over in debt-investment bubbles throughout human history. Continuing lending to deadbeat borrowers while refusing to admit that loans are non-performing, for instance, is common to the 1970s NY "money center" banking crisis (bad sovereign debt in Latin America), the U.S. S&L crisis of the 1980s, and the Japanese bubble-pop of the 1990s. (Equity-fueled bubbles, like the late 1990s U.S. dot-com situation, work out a bit differently–the lack of leverage limits the cascading effects and allows for quicker recovery.)
People who think that pointing out these issues is "China bashing" don't get it. Just as basic biology is the same in China and the rest of the world even if the particular flora and fauna differ, so the dynamics of debt bubbles work pretty much the same way even though the institutional details differ.

I once met a Chinese bank regulator. I joked (not really) "so your job is to cover up their bad loans, right?" She smirked knowingly.

Actual story.

Really. It was meant in a positive connotation.

I wish I had more. It was someone sitting next to me on a plane in China. I asked her what she did and then I replied trying to be funny and was surprised that she basically 'fessed up.

What I can say is that all the mayors and governors in China are either up for promotion or demotion every five years (with the five-year plan) and they had better meet their GDP growth targets and the easiest way for them to do it is to influence local and provincial banks to make projects happen--even bad ones.
