I like records, but the stuff being released nowadays is using the same dynamically compressed source as everything else. But I'll always support tangible media that can actually be resold.

I don't get how vinyl sound trumps mp3 or even CD sound. With the right quality speakers or headphones, and not to mention good quality mp3 files, any song no matter what the medium sounds good.

I used to think so. I stumbled into vinyl because I figured I can save money buying vinyl records over downloads. I can then convert the song to mp3 if I wanted to. Well I did that and was blown away by the difference. So I am pretty much spending some free time at used record shops in the bohemian parts of the city - kind of cool actually (though I get uneasy around bearded hipsters).

The problem is I have spent a year into old music and not listening to new music from my generation. I literally don't know what is out there anymore other than "Gangnam Style".

I had a pretty big collection of vinyl, both my own and my dad's, at one time. But they're heavy and not so portable, so before I came to China, I digitized them into mp3s. (I was given a nice linear-tracking Technics turntables. My stepson has it now.) Then, I took the whole lot to Goodwill.

That was four years ago. Last summer, my son tells me he's bought a turntable and has been picking up jazz albums on vinyl. Doh! I could have saved him some effort, if he had had the bug a little earlier.

I think vinyl sounds better (less the pops and scratches) than digital, but frankly I think it's all in my head.

I have a theory that those extra harmonics inherent in the LP format actually makes things sound a little better. It's a little like a Kodachrome photograph. No, the brain doesn't see color like that, but it perceives it to be correct.

Here is a video on audiophiles in Greece and the lengths they go to in setting up the perfect turntable audio system for their albums:

Some of those home made contraptions look like rocket ship controls. But I think the observations you made were correct, for the album to produce the superior sound you do need a good machine and speakers. I had an old one from my dad who told me he spent a month's salary to buy his back in the day so I did not have to sweat to buy one (and still runs great with some service).
