Myth #4: More good guys with guns can stop rampaging bad guys.
Fact-check: Mass shootings stopped by armed civilians in the past 30 years: 0

That one is false. I can think of two off the top of my head.

Jeanne Assam (who later came out as a lesbian) was a volunteer security guard at New Life Church. She was a former police officer, but was no longer in law enforcement at the time she shot and wounded a gunman who invaded the church and had already killed one person in the parking lot and wounded another after he had shot and killed two people at the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) campus the night before.


Also:

In 1997, assistant principal Joel Myrick used a handgun to stop fleeing school shooter Luke Woodham.* Woodham, who had killed his mother that morning, murdered two students and wounded several others before Myrick, an Army reservist, rammed his car into Woodham’s and then forced him to the ground.

After 51-year-old teacher Carl Brown opened fire on a Miami welding shop in 1982, killing eight, a man nearby grabbed his gun, jumped in his car, and chased Brown as he fled on his bicycle. The pursuer fired what he said was a warning shot, striking Brown in the back, and then ran Brown into a light pole.

The above article concludes that most citizen inventions appear to be from off duty police, although armed civilians do successfully intervene on rare occasions. It should be noted that an armed civilian was responding to the Gabrielle Giffords shooter just as he (the gunman) was wrestled to the ground by other bystanders. The civilian responder fortunately was able to quickly realize that the gunman was subdued. Also, the first two examples may not even be considered mass shootings in some estimates since less than 4 people were killed. Mother Jones does not consider a shooting to be a mass shooting unless there are 4 fatalities (no matter people were actually shot. In both cases, more than 4 people were shot)
