Honestly I think eliminating Saturday delivery is smart. Growing up in Canada we didn’t have Saturday delivery and no one suffered. I see weekend delivery as more of a novelty than a necessity. I think the rule about still delivering packages is smart though.

I don’t mind the end of Saturday delivery but I do mind the covert ways the Congress is killing the USPS by having it prefund it’s pension 75 years in advance - tell me is that done in Canada?

This whole thing reminds me how Congress mandated the privatization of American helium reserves - an extremely rare commodity and a resource vital to national security - at record low prices.

No doubt it is in the interest of the unscrupulous to depreciate the value of the USPS so to pick up the infrastructure on the cheap.

The USPS should pay just like the rest of the agencies. No more no less. Or maybe I should no sooner no later.

What does that mean? Pay up what? The pension? Name me one organization that pays the pension of it’s workers 75 years into the future?

Not a one. Private pension funds don’t bother at all in too many cases. And states, like NJ, stopped its contributions leaving some of those funds unable to pay pensions, which automatically means the local GOPers get to slash things like teacher and public employee pensions.

Too much kills it. Too little kills it. And almost always, the GOP is leading the charge.

Btw, I’m good with no Saturday delivery, too.

The pension issue aside, I am all for reducing US Mail delivery from 6 days down to 5. Heck, I’d say go down to 3 days per week.

Here is my own made-up statistic: 90% of US Mail by weight goes directly into the trash. Feel free to provide a more accurate estimate.

Every gallon of gasoline that is not burned by US Mail trucks delivering junk to the mail boxes across the country not only lowers our carborn footprint a tiny bit, it reduces consumption of a limited resource which will work towards reducing the market price.

Next up, I’d like to see school districts convert to 4 days per week and reduce transporation expenses 20%.
