He didn’t think about this before retiring? Seriously? He couldn’t just get moved to a desk jockey position for 4 years to take a pension and benefits with him?

A similar, albeit involuntary thing happened to my father in 1995. Post-Cold War cuts in his specialty (he was a KC-135 navigator, a position now filled by an inertial navigation system) meant a promote-next-cycle-or-die scenario for hundreds of Majors with sterling careers and no desire to leave before 20 years. 17 1/2 years of excellent service led to a paltry severance check, no transition assistance (this was 1995, after all), and no possibility of making up the 2 1/2 years left for pension eligibility. “Force reshaping” is a weasel-worded euphemism for “Don’t let the door hit your soon-to-be-broke ass on the way out.”

If he’s got the amount of injury he says, he should get some form of VA pension. They don’t normally just RIF SEALs, either, that level of knowledge and skill is valuable.

Ah! That makes sense. I was assuming that the amount of money that goes into training a Navy SEAL probably would mean that the government would be very loathe to RIF somebody who didn’t want to go, but I guess that is a possibility here.
