Ahhhhh, I don’t know ….I’d like to know if there are witnesses .That’s hardley an act that one can do on an airliner without someone hearing the slur and seeing the smack . The woman issues a complaint ,the authorities must file a charge . I’d hold conclusions till the court date , or at least more information .

The reports I heard says there was a witness.

Yes, there was a witness, sitting on the plane a couple of rows back and he heard the racial slur and the slap.

Yep, there are several reports about the witness. Apparently some people would prefer to question the mother’s honesty than spend 5 seconds googling it.

“After Joe Rickey Handley struck [the child], Ms. Bennett received assistance from several people on the plane, including male passenger Todd Wooten,” court documents said.

Wooten, who was seated in row 16, said he heard derogatory language coming from the rear of the aircraft and witnessed Handley slapping the child.

I’ll reserve concliusion , until the internet hearsay is out of the way , and the facts are in . Pundits get punked everyday by jumping too quickly .
What about the 4 boys at Duke ? Everyone had’
em hung up by the yard arm until it was proven that Crystal’s charges were totally false …but not before disgracing 4 family names and ruining 4 reputations , causing 4 expulsions from Duke .
BTW Crystal’s in jail today doing time for murdering her boyfreind .

Unlike Duke, there were witnesses to back this woman up.

Being the kind of person who doesn’t back down from assholes, I have nonetheless done so when my children are involved because I don’t want them hurt.

I think I will trust the word of the Mom in this case, and the eye witnesses, rather than some drunk asshole who has been arrested for public intoxication and assault previously.

Funny how most will come to a simple, logical conclusions while others prefer to obfuscate.

The drunk asshole will have his chance to deny the charges and go to court if he so chooses.

Quit your job as a psychologist freind . I simply wait to crosscheck informatioin , yes even on LGF . And since the story has been confirmed on ABC , i now accept the event . Why would I bring up the Duke incident ? That’s easy , look how many jumped to conclusions ,before any facts were in . The Idaho man who called the kid the N word was apparently refering to a black child ,and I wouldn’t jump to hang him , since he is the accused . And I qualified my statement with the same doubt until I had verified the information .Sorry but I take with a grain of salt everything I hear on internet blogs , Google is not The Paragon of truth . Whenever Breitbart comes up with a wild story , many times the first page on Google is nothing but Breitbart as a source ,and Wiki ? Phe . I’m skeptical until I can verfy information , so SUE ME . The story is so outrageous if true , and now that I have confirmed it , I’m in agreement with most of the sentiments expressed . So dont go painting me as a racist . It is hard to believe anyone WHITE OR BLACK would do such a thing . Pleasse take note of my last sentence in each of the two posts .

Then maybe you should have waited and done your research before posting, because everyone else who has posted on here has done theirs. you came late to the party and now that you have “confirmed” the story to be valid, youre now in damage control mode. Dont try to pull the wool over my eyes by trying to pretend that you are not prejudice. there are is a plethora of examples you could have used besides duke lacross. you could have used ashley todd, susan smith, bethany storro. they have received national headlines and even sympathy before they were caught lying. you now agree with everyone’s sentiment here because you have no choice to. everyone had the “facts” before you.

I had a feeling that might be the case, though I can’t explain why. Maybe I picked up on the slightly odd way the slur was phrased, i.e. “shut that ****** baby up” instead of “shut your ****** baby up”.

Plus, they didn’t mention the mom’s race. Being one of two brown-skinned people in a predominantly WASP family, I remember thinking it sort of strange (once I was old enough to notice) how in conversations other white people were never identified as such, but non-whites (or white foreigners) had their ethnicity appended to their identity. It was very subtle and not done in a disparaging way, but still…it made it clear that the person was somehow different, “other”.

Okay, I’m just babbling now, so I’ll stop. ;)

In the serendipitous coincidence category, I saw a very similar point made on the NaNoWriMo forums in a thread about racism:

We are categories of pornography. People fetishize us and treat our race as a monolith. People look at our popular culture and assume that’s exactly what our ethnic culture is like…Anything that we do wrong, as an individual, is somehow a reflection of our entire race. Our opinions are somehow a reflection of the opinions of our entire race. Whenever we succeed, we are a “credit to our race” or we are “successful for a (insert race) person.”

We sometimes wish we were white. Sometimes, we don’t even realise that we’re not white until it smacks us in the face.

It’s a pretty powerful post, well worth reading in full.
