Singaporeans are raring to do something extraordinary: protest.
That might not seem like a big deal with the Arab Spring uprisings; Chinese journalists taking to the streets; and thousands of typically docile Japanese rallying against government policies. But tropical Singapore is the land of quiet brooding, where mass street demonstrations are as common as snowstorms.
What has people so riled up? Well, people. The impetus for the Feb. 16 march is a report that the tiny island’s population may rise by as much as 30 percent to 6.9 million by 2030. This seems to be the government’s answer to the question of how to sustain prosperity in one of the most crowded and expensive cities in the world.
The signs of overcrowding and urban stress are palpable to any visitor. Prices are surging, public services in a nation famed for nanny-state tendencies are slipping and some of the finest infrastructure anywhere is buckling under the strain. Locals blame the influx of immigrants, which Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s ruling party touts as one key to Singapore’s success in the years to come.
Bodies of the dead are rising from their graves, warns CBS affiliate. News at 10.
Emergency alert: zombies are rising up in Montana.
“Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living. Follow the messages onscreen that will be updated as information become available. Do not attempt to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are considered extremely dangerous.”
That Emergency Alert System (EAS) voiceover warning, preceded by the standard, staccato EAS attention signal, ran Monday afternoon on CBS affiliate television station KRTV in Great Falls, Mont. The EAS warning interrupted a broadcast of “The Steve Wilkos Show” devoted to teen cheaters.
Signs of an apparent zombie apocalypse to the contrary, KRTV later that day released a statement confirming that a bogus message had been transmitted via its EAS equipment. “Someone apparently hacked into the Emergency Alert System and announced on KRTV and the CW that there was an emergency in several Montana counties,” according to the statement. “This message did not originate from KRTV, and there is no emergency. Our engineers are investigating to determine what happened and if it affected other media outlets.”
Local police likewise said there was no emergency. “We can report in the city, there have been no sightings of dead bodies rising from the ground,” Lt. Shane Sorensen of the Great Falls Police Department told the Great Falls Tribune — admittedly, with a laugh.
A BOMB targeting Shiite Muslims in a busy market in Pakistan’s insurgency-hit southwest killed 79 people including women and children and wounded 180 others.
The powerful bomb in a water tanker ripped through a packed bazaar in Hazara town, an area dominated by Shiites on the outskirts of Quetta - capital of oil and gas rich Baluchistan province - at around 6pm local time yesterday.
“We have recovered more dead bodies from the debris of a collapsed building. The death toll has now risen to 79,” senior Quetta police official Wazir Khan Nasir said.
Quetta city police chief Zubair Mehmood said the water tanker, which officials said was packed with some 800 kilograms of explosives, was placed near a pillar of a two-storey building, which collapsed in the blast.
“We fear that several people have been trapped inside. Rescue work is ongoing but I see very little chance of their survival,” Mr Mehmood said.
Mr Nasir said the bombing “was a sectarian attack, the Shiite community was the target”.
A spokesman for the banned Sunni Muslim extremist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the bombing.
It’s time for progressives to get out the popcorn.
CPAC is coming! Prepare your battleships, patriots. On March 14, the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference descends upon innocent Americans in order to spread the goodness of Dick Morris, movies sponsored by Citizens United and the liberty of fracking. Woo hoo!
But once again, there’s trouble in paradise, because once again, CPAC gave GOProud the boot. They invited Wayne La Pierre this year (along with Ralph Reed and conspiracy theorist Ben Shapiro) and last year, they had white supremacist John Derbyshire, but gays are too divisive.
Last year, GOPRoud was “kicked out” of CPAC because they are gay, according to GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia. The gay conservatives are told they can come as individual registrants this year, but no booth. No seat at the figurative and literal table. Why? Because the loudest voices in the conservative movement don’t want RINOs; aka, no compromising just for a big tent. So, gay Republicans, you’re out.
To wit, the twitter wars:
Meteorite-hit Russia proposes common space defense system
english.news.cn 2013-02-16 23:03:08
MOSCOW, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) — Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin Saturday proposed establishing a common defense system to counter space threats, one day after a meteorite explosion injured some 1,200 people in the Chelyabinsk region in Russia’s Urals region.
“Humankind must create a system to identify and neutralize objects that pose a danger to the Earth,” the official wrote on his Twitter account.
Rogozin said he would present Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev Monday with proposals on how to tackle similar incidents in the future.
Local experts also advocated for the building of a common space threat monitoring and warning system.
Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of Russia’s federal space agency Roscosmos, told local media that strategic planetary defense should be a “priority” for Russia. He called for a special federal program on neutralizing space threats.
The damage caused by the meteorite strike in the Urals region is estimated to exceed 1 billion rubles (about 30 million U.S. dollars), Governor Mikhail Yurevich told reporters, adding the number may increase.
According to NASA data, the diameter of “space comer” was about 15 meters and it came across the atmosphere at a speed of 64,000 km per hour. The energy shockwave was equal to about 300 kilotons of TNT.
Last October, Russian rocket and space corporation Energia vowed to build a space rocket capable of destroying asteroids threatening the Earth.
The largest-ever meteorite impact with the Earth in written history occurred in 1908 in Russia’s Siberia over Tunguska River, when a forest area was flattened by a slightly smaller asteroid, which exploded about five miles above ground.
Let’s build starfleet already. Also, if the world is busy defending themselves from space threats maybe we won’t target each other - pie in the sky, I know.
Atlanta, Georgia ( CNN ) An Idaho man is arrested after slapping a toddler aboard a plane.
Investigators say Joe Rickey Hundley of Hayden directed a racial slur at a two–year old boy.
The boy had been crying as the Delta flight approached an Atlanta airport on Friday, February 8th.
The child’s mother, 33– year old Jessica Bennett of Minneapolis told authorities Hundley was sitting next to her and slapped the boy in his face. It caused a scratch under his right eye.
The FBI is charging Hundley with simple assault.
Edit 2. Why the hell am I not surprised?

Actually going up to Oyster Bay and resurrecting this President is more costly than I’d like. (Live chicken, on a train, do the math.)
I’m pretty sure I can make the statue on TR Island into a golem, though.
It’s interesting how common herbs are shared in common between Qabbalists and Voodoonistas.
Hm. I wonder.
A draft of a White House immigration proposal obtained by USA TODAY would allow illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents within eight years.
The plan also would provide for more security funding and require business owners to check the immigration status of new hires within four years. In addition, the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants could apply for a newly created “Lawful Prospective Immigrant” visa, under the bill being written by the White House.
That sounds pretty good to me. I hope it doesn’t get watered down in compromises with the Republicans.
A major requirement for many Republicans is enhanced border security. The bill calls for an unspecified increase in the Border Patrol, allows the Department of Homeland Security to expand technological improvements along the border and adds 140 new immigration judges to process the heavy flow of people who violate immigration laws.
The number of Border Patrol agents has doubled since 2004. It could be time for a draw down, in my opinion. However, the immigration judges are desperately needed.

Talk to your Congresspeople and Senators. Tell them we need to legalize the people who are here, and we need to do it in a timely manner. ‘Border Security’ is a red herring used by anti-immigrationists to forestall legalization of people who are Americans without the piece of paper they need to be equal.
