Gary Dawson describes it as a leap of faith. Others might say it was foolish.
“I love what I do,” he told National Jeweler during a recent phone interview conducted fireside from his cozy jewelry studio in Oregon. “I never visualize a retirement like people do in our culture. But, after all those years having a business run me, I decided it was time to simply run a business.”
Dawson, who has been in the jewelry industry for about 37 years all told, opened his eponymous, custom-only Internet shop in June 2011 after finding a “great” web developer, Mike Dickman, through a mutual friend. In a true sign of people’s growing trust in relationships initiated online, the two have never met face to face despite working together for more than a year.
