It can just be a Roman gladiatorial salute…
He seemed apologetic on twitter.

Oh for fuck’s sake, dude. Really? You’re trying to claim he was imitating a roman?

I will say he was probably just being a dick rather than actually being a Golden Dawn follower or whatever.

Maybe not. It should be pretty easy to find if he had any previous neo-nazi sympathies. If he’s a registered member of Golden Dawn or something then yeah.

It is possible he’s just very fucking stupid, but since Greece has actual neo-Nazis in the government, claiming ignorance about the fascist salute seems pretty incredible to me.

When I was 7 or 8 years old, about 1973-74, Hogan’s Heroes was a show a lot of us children got to see with our parents. We had a rude awakening one day, as a teacher had seen some of us goose-stepping around the playground and making the exact same salutes. She took all three of our 2nd grade classes into the auditorium and explained how she and her family had escaped the Nazis during the war, and that it wasn’t a fun or funny thing to be doing on the playground.
When I look back at all the history classes I had, the horrors of WWII weren’t an official part of the curriculum. The stories of Nazi atrocities were things the teachers took upon themselves to inform us about.
I’d made a comment on HuffPo regarding how I found it hard to believe someone could grow to be 20 years old and not know anything about the Nazis, and this bit of self-reflection put enough doubt in my mind that it’s likely easier than I imagined.
